When you pay a visit to Nigerian clubs, it’s not uncommon to see Hypemen taking the lead while the DJ backs them up with specially curated playlists t send the crowd into a frenzy.
Currently, Hypemen have steadily gone beyond the four walls of the club, now finding their way into the proper music scene and sharing the same platform with Artists.
While they are not complete artists, in a way Hypemen also sees to the fact that their audience lets go of all inhibitions and indulges themselves to the fullest.

Here are some of the Hypemen who are leading the exploration of sounds in the Nigerian Music scene.
DJ Flexy Naija
The Enugu born student of Oko Polythene of Anambra swiftly rose through the scene in 2020 with his Dorime hype song laid over Era’s Ameno where he stated, “He say one for the DJ, one for the hypeman, two for him table.”
However, like Pop Smoke, whose life was cut short in his prime, the illustrious DJ died on the heels of his work’s popularity.
DJ Flexy Naija, who was reported deceased on June 4th, was allegedly poisoned not long after he posted an introspective piece on success-induced envy.
DJ Flexy’s hype song was not only a well-known tune among music fans and club regulars, but it was also an essential hype track that contributed to the federation’s hype record craze.
Toby Shang
Toby Shang is another successful Hypeman who is slowly transitioning into doing music full time.
While Toby Shang started gaining prominence during the “Shedibalabala” trend, he is best known for the Hype-songs, ‘Run this Town”, “Who TF Are You!” & “Shey E Dey Shake“.
He has also been featured on a song, “Excuse me” by Mavins Artist, Crayon.
Hypeman Bobby Banks
In the middle of 2021, the ‘shedibalabala’ trend was bubbling on social media with many women participating in the challenge .
Although the lyrics were called out by some netizens who expressed worry about the vulgarities, it didn’t stop the song from being a street favourite.
While there was a controversy on owned the word, ‘shedibalabala’, Hypeman Bobby Banks is the voice behind the infamous mix owned by DJ Bapslit that had tik-tok in a chokehold.
Bobby banks also featured on a proper song of the same name with Jerry Shaffer who claims to be the first to come across the word.
Voltage of Hype
“Dorime is not for civil servant, but try dey enjoy, make money, catch cruise,” Voltage of Hype builds on his most popular hype song, which refers to Nigerian nightlife’s big-balling, bottle-popping culture, as exemplified by Era’s Ameno tune, which plays anytime a big spender order an expensive bottle of liquor.
The MC’s hype song, which is both painfully real and humorous, has entertained listeners beyond clubhouses and onto social media, where netizens have cast many interpretations of it.

Emmy Blaq
Emmy Blaq is another hypeman whose hype has earned him prominence on social media. His breakout hype song, ‘Full Option’ sees him sing,
“You get breast, you get yansh, you get sense, you come still fine, normally you be wife material.”
The buzz song, which is simple yet tempting, resonated with female netizens both at home and abroad, with Stefflon Don, a British rapper and honorary Nigerian, vivaciously leaping on the tune to produce a TikTok video.
Another of his hype that caused a frenzy on social media was “Small Yansh dey Shake” which many women especially those with smaller backsides have seen as an empowering tune to boldly shake their backside in spite of criticisms.
