On November 10, 2024, Grammy Award-winning artist Tyla reached new heights in her music career, taking home three awards at the prestigious 30th MTV Europe Music Awards (EMAs), held in Manchester, United Kingdom.
Tyla, a rising force in the global music scene, won the coveted Best Afrobeats award, beating notable nominees such as Rema, Tems, and Asake, cementing her influence in the genre.
The 2024 MTV EMAs, hosted by the energetic Rita Ora at the Co-op Arena, celebrated its milestone 30th anniversary with electrifying performances and tributes to music diversity.
This year’s Best Afrobeats category was packed with talent, featuring acclaimed nominees like Burna Boy, Ayra Starr, and Tyla, each of whom has played a role in propelling Afrobeats onto the global stage.
In an emotional acceptance speech, Tyla expressed her appreciation, acknowledging the impact her fellow nominees have had on the growth of Afrobeats worldwide. “Other nominees have taken Afrobeats so far; I’m honored to win this award. I want to thank my team, family, and fans, (the Tigers), for voting for me,” she shared. Tyla also extended gratitude to her family, friends, and Maker, attributing her success to their steadfast support.

Adding to her triumphs, Tyla also secured the Best African Act award, outshining other strong contenders like Ayra Starr, Asake, DBN Gogo, TitoM & Yuppe, and Diamond Platnumz.
Her third win of the night came in the Best R&B Artist category, where she triumphed over American heavyweights such as Kehlani, SZA, Tinashe, Usher, and Victoria Monét.
To close the night, Tyla treated fans to a soulful acoustic rendition of her popular hit, Water, wrapping up what was undoubtedly an unforgettable evening for the South African star.
Meanwhile, Nigerian star Ayra Starr, who was nominated for four awards—including Best African Act, Best New Artist, Best Afrobeats Artist, and Best Push—walked away empty-handed, despite her strong presence on the nominations list.
Earlier this year, Tyla also claimed victory over Nigerian artists at the Grammys by winning the first-ever Best African Music Performance category, along with Best Afrobeats Artist at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards, where she again triumphed over fierce competition from the Nigerian music scene.
