FA Cup third round draw: Arsenal host Liverpool; Tyne-Wear derby.
The much-anticipated draw for the FA Cup third round has taken place, with Premier League and Championship clubs eagerly entering football’s oldest cup competition.
A particularly notable fixture emerged as eternal northern rivals Sunderland and Newcastle United were pitted against each other, setting the stage for the first Tyne-Wear derby since 2016. Despite being in a division above Championship side Sunderland, Newcastle has struggled to defeat their neighbors since 2011.
In another high-profile matchup, Premier League leaders Arsenal are set to host Liverpool in a clash between two top-flight giants. Together, they boast an impressive 22 FA Cup trophies. Meanwhile, the reigning FA Cup champions, Manchester City, secured a home tie against Championship strugglers Huddersfield Town, avoiding any dramatic upsets.
Recalling last summer’s showdown, where Manchester United fell to their city rivals with the fastest FA Cup final goal in history, Erik ten Hag’s team is gearing up for a third-round clash against Wigan Athletic, determined to fare better than the 13-second setback they experienced in the previous final.

- The FA Cup third round for the 2023/24 season is scheduled to take place on the first weekend of the new year, with ties set for the weekend beginning Saturday, January 6, 2024.Regarding replays in the 2023/24 FA Cup third round, the tradition of scrapping replays from the fifth round onwards, initiated ahead of the 2017/18 campaign, still holds.
- However, for the third-round matches, if a game is level after the regular 90 minutes, a replay will be conducted at the home ground of the away team from the initial tie. In the event that the two teams remain tied after the replay, 30 minutes of extra time will be played, and if the deadlock persists, a penalty shootout will determine the winner. There is ongoing discussion about potentially removing this replay tradition from the competition, with talks of reforms before a new cycle of TV scheduling beginning in 2025/26. However, as of now, no final decisions have been made regarding this matter.
