Every now and then, there are remarkable and memorable events that happen in our vast music industry.
We have compiled a list of 10 memorable moments in the Nigerian Music industry in the first half of 2021.
Nigerian artistes win Grammy Awards
For the first time since Nigeria’s independence, two of our Afrobeat giants broke the yoke and brought in the Grammy home to us. Don’t look too further, it’s no other than Burna Boy and Wizkid.
The 63rd annual Recording Academy Awards took place in Los Angeles. Traditionally billed as “music’s biggest night”.
Burna Boy wins 3rd Black Entertainment Award (BET)
Another memorable moment was when Odogwu himself won his third BET award, making him the first and only African artiste to do so. In the category of Best International Act, Burna lashed Wizkid and others to claim victory at the 2021 BET Awards ceremony.
Omah lay and Laycon performing for Recording Academy (Grammy)
In the month of June, fast-rising superstar, Omah Lay appeared as a guest artist on the Recording Academy’s Press Play At Home series and performed his hit single, “Can’t Relate“. Likewise, on the 1st of July Laycon also served one of his hit songs titled, “All Over Me” on the Press Play At Home series, hosted by the Recording Academy.
Quite remarkable and memorable, because the popular saying that “don’t despise little beginnings” is a call to action here. We have them performing at the Grammys, soon they become Grammy winners.
Wizkid’s “Essence” topping charts and getting world-class celebrities vibing to it
It is no longer news that Wizkid’s “Essence“ feat. Tems has been on the headlines for various great reasons since its inception to the airways over 8 months ago. Lately, we have seen lots of renowned celebrities, from P.Diddy, Kevin Hart, Rihanna, and many more vibing to it on different occasions.
Likewise, it has been topping charts and recently surpassed his Ginger song featuring Burna on UK Afrobeats Charts, claiming the 1st spot there.

Seyi Shay and Tiwa Savage’s saga
The long-standing rivalry between Nigerian pop stars, Tiwa Savage and Seyi Shay, took a different dimension in the month of June when they finally engaged in a skirmish at an upscale salon in Lekki, Lagos.
In a viral video making rounds on the internet, the two artistes got caught into a verbal rift almost getting physical with each other.

Obama DMW’s death
Habeeb Uthman aka Obama DMW, an aide of Nigerian music star, Davido, has died after complaining of breathing difficulty on June the 28th of June. The death took a toll on the industry and the 30BG Gang at large.
Oniduro Mi saga
While the circular artistes, had their own moments, the gospel aspect was not left out with the Oniduro Mi Saga between Tope Alabi, Adeyinka Alaseyori, and Shola Allyson.
It all started when Tope Alabi poured out a controversial opinion on the song “Oniduro Mi”, citing her displeasure with the lyrics and title of the song. Then, mixed reactions sprung from netizens, causing a deep feud and a sudden outburst of glory for the singer, Adeyinka. Read more here

E Choke! Davido at 10
In the month of May, DMW’s and 30BG leader, Davido celebrated 10 years of presenting awesome and wonderful Afrobeat music. Undoubtedly, he is one of the strong forces promoting Afrobeat music worldwide with numerous hit songs and albums. Wizkid’s Superstar album at 10
Also, while talking about his recent Grammy award, we should also remember that Wizkid’s Superstar debut album recently clocked 10 years.
For some who may not be aware, this is the little beggings we wrote off earlier; the born of a superstar and legend in the Afrobeat genre.
Burna Boy and Obafemi Martins’ feud
Reports allege that Burna disrespected Oba goal in a nightclub on the 2nd of March, which then led to an escalation which resulted in a physical confrontation from both parties. At first, it came out as a rumour, later Martins came out to speak on the issue stating; the feud did happen, however, it’s been resolved.
