The late Michael Aboh, one-half of the well-known musical duo Zule Zoo, was laid to rest in Benue State.

On Saturday, June 4, 2022, Mike—as he was affectionately known—passed away while having a bath.

On Friday, July 22, 2022, he was laid to rest in his rural home in Benue State’s Kwande Local Government Area amid tributes and tears.

Along with other prominent celebrities, his partner Al-Hassan Ibrahim, called Ibro of Zule Zoo, and actor Abu Chris Gbakann were present to pay their final respects to the late “Kerewa” crooner.

Recall that Mp3bullet.ng reported that his death was posted on the group’s Instagram page, @ZuleZooAfrica, by his companion, Al-Hassan Ibrahim.

Michael Aboh, one-half of the popular music group Zule Zoo, has passed away.

The group was behind the hit song ‘Kerewa,’ which ruled the airwaves many years ago.

The musician was claimed to have died while taking a bath on Saturday morning, June 4, 2022. His death was posted on the group’s Instagram page, @ZuleZooAfrica, by his companion, Al-Hassan Ibrahim.

Ibrahim posted a picture of him and Aboh together with the caption,

“My brother collapsed while taking his bath this morning and now my Michael is no more. Tears have fallen from my eyes and my hands are shaking as I can’t hide the fact that you’ve passed on. I really cannot question God for I have lost the other part of myself— a brother and friend. Oh death, why? Rest in peace, Michael.”

Meanwhile, fans of the group have continued to mourn the late Aboh.

Freddie Abah wrote, “Sad story today. May God rest his soul peacefully. The loss is for all of us. Accept my sincere condolences, big bro Ibro.”

A member of the defunct Style-Plus group, Shifi Emoefe said, “So sorry, bro. Take heart. May Michael rest peacefully and may God strengthen you at this difficult time.”

On his part, Frankyd2l wrote, “(There is) nothing in this life. This is bad. Rest in peace, Michael.”

It was reported some years ago, that Aboh suffered from mental health issues.

However, Aboh denied that he was ill. In an interview with Sunday Scoop in 2019, Aboh said,

“I don’t have any health challenge. But in life, you don’t expect everything to be hundred per cent. I don’t have issues with my brother (Ibro). I prefer working with him to being a solo artiste. We are working individually now, but if there is any need to do things together, I am open to the idea. Whenever I am with him on stage, I enjoy myself.”

These Nigerian songs had us dancing but their lyrics were controversial.

Back in the days when the music industry was booming, lyrics were an important factor as much as their beat and melody.

While there were censorship guiding the entertainment industry, it didn’t stop artists who just wanted to express their thoughts on particular issues.

Some of these songs were a popular staples in parties, clubs and radios but their lyrics had parents cringing whenever it came on near their children.

Kerewa – Zule zoo

Kerewa was a highly divisive song when it first came out. The Song was prohibited from most radio stations due to its obscene lyrics and innuendos.

This is one of those songs where everyone has a personal experience of singing along to the explicit and colourful lyrics and then being punished by an African parent for doing so.

The theme, ironically, wasn’t about sex, but about the now-popular topic of rape. Many of us were too ignorant back in 2005, when it was a hit, to realize this.

The song’s plot revolves around a young child who witnesses their mum cheating on their dad with another man and proceeds to sing about it in graphic detail.

Yahooze- Olu Maintain

“Yahooze” is a song by Nigerian recording artist Olu Maintain. It was produced by Puffy Tee and officially released on October 27, 2007, as the lead single from his debut album of the same name.

“Yahooze” was not only a commercial hit but also popularize the Yahooze dance which involves throwing fingers in the air.

Although many of us were too naïve to grasp the source of the money Olu Maintain sang about in his 2007 hit, Yahooze, we all recognized the song was a hit.

Maga Don Pay- Kelly Hansome

This song was popular for many reasons. The beat and most of all, its melody. However, the lyrics are somewhat controversial.

The name of the song borrows its language from the textbook of 419s or Yahoo Yahoo boys as they are popularly known. It a slang used when a victim has successfully been scammed.

It was a popular hit song when it was released in 2008 but unfortunately also encouraged the celebration of criminals who are defrauding people to make a quick buck.

The song was released a year after the release of Olu Maintain’s Yahooze. These two songs are the bedrock upon which other songs which promote fraud activities are being made.

Ashawo- Flavour

The name of the song alone tells you it is about to be controversial galore. Flavour’s Ashewo song was laced with a lot of sexual undertones and lines. The song was highly controversial as the video didn’t even help matters.

Iya Basira- Styl-Plus

Styl Plus gave fans a lot of hits to remember and “Iya Basira” is one of them. The song at first listen might confuse as just another funny story but beneath the surface lies a very confusing and puzzling story.

On “Iya Basira‘, Tunde, Shiffy and Zeal sing about a food vendor who is the titular character whose food customers can’t seem to get enough of.

The food causes them to spend their money on Iya Basira’s restaurant, and fight with their loved ones and even the Police can’t help them break out of her chokehold.

The song’s theme is Nollywood-like with the suspicion that Iya Basira might actually be using juju to hold her customers.

If I die- Dagrin

How many artists can predict their death and how its likely going to happen? Dagrin, an indigenous rapper, released the song shortly before his death. After his death, the song became immensely controversial, sparking several rumours and legends about his premature death.

Wande Coal’s debut project Mushin to Mo’Hits is regarded as a classic by every 90s kid. This is a status it earned due to the quality of songs on the album.

Quiet a number became hits but none was as seismic as the remix to Kiss Your Hand with Ghanaian group, R2Bees.

Like jollof rice, this song brought Ghana and Nigeria together in a refreshing way and had us chanting every word of the record.

Yahooze – Olu Maintain 

A good number of us may have been too naive to understand the source of the wealth Olu Maintain sang about it in his 2007 hit, Yahooze, but we definitely knew the song was a jam.

And so we’d perfected our two-fingers-in-the-air move, adding as much ‘effizi’ as we could in a bid to be crowned best dancer.

 L’ori Le – X Project

This song has never failed to re-ignite excitement and energy into the bodies of dancers and party-going 90s babies since it dropped in 2008.

Whenever the heavy synth-infused trumpet instrumentals come on, even to date, it officially becomes the time to show up and show out your Alanta skills while sprinkling in some upper body action as well.

Olufunmi – Styl Plus

A pop rager filled with a lovers’ angst we didn’t know anything about. But we definitely didn’t let this stop us from singing wholeheartedly to the song and even feeling the feels while in the process.

It’s safe to say Stylplus with this 2003 banger, gave many of us a soft introduction into the rollercoaster emotion that is love.

Nfana Ibaga – 2Baba

2Baba, who was then known as 2Face, started this song’s hook with the lines

“Wake up in the morning and I stretch up my feet, say a thank you prayer and I brush up my teeth”

and that was all we needed to make the song into the soundtrack of our every waking moment as well as the spark to our dreams and ambitions.

This was also everyone’s introduction to 2Face as he broke out in 2014 with this song before going on to give us even greater hits.

 Mr President – African China

Well before the advent of legwork movements like shaku shaku and zanku, a galala wave had swept the nation and had made people put in rhythmic legwork to tracks of reggae and dancehall.

One of such tracks we’d done the galala to then is African China’s thought-evoking, socially-conscious, Mr President.

Sadly despite the song being 15 years old, it still captures the poor state of the country.

So while we 90s babies might now have rusty galala, we make sure to sing our hearts out as energetically as any galala move, to this record.

Kerewa – Zule Zoo

This is one of the songs where everyone has a personal memory of singing along to the explicit and colorful lyrics and afterward suffering some African parents given punishment for daring to sing such.

Ironically, the theme wasn’t about sex but the now amplified topic of rape.

A realization many of us were then too naive to make back in 2005 when it was a hit.

Fire on the Mountain – Asa

Indeed Asa’s breakout song is one we enjoyed but now serves to remind us of the poor state things have continued to be in since 2007 when it was released and even before.

But beyond the obvious message of the song that is yet to be heeded, lies for the 90s baby, tonnes of happy memories that remind us of our introduction to the ethereal melodies of Asa.

2006 was a defining moment in Nigerian music history. The sound of Nigerian music was becoming established by this time. In comparison to previous years, when international music dominated the airwaves, Nigerian songs began to receive more airplay on local radio.

Music quality improved significantly as artists gained access to better-recording equipment and studios

The establishment of the American Entertainment Station, MTV Base Africa in Nigeria the previous year also prompted the need for Nigerian acts to use music videos as promotional tools.

As MTV was available in most of Africa, the modern Nigerian pop scene began to receive international attention for the first time. These videos then spread across the continent, ushering in the Nigerian music scene as the dominant force in Africa that it is today!

This year also marked the dominance of two major record labels – Storm records and Mo’hits on the scene. The success of these labels created a record label boom within the industry in the subsequent years

Faze- Kolemental

Kolomental was the lead single from Faze’s sophomore album, Independent, which was released in 2006 and went on to become one of the year’s biggest Nigerian songs in 2007.

In 2006, he released the R’n’B tune, “Angel of My Life“. The song was a hit solidifying Paul Play’s place as one of the biggest Afro-R’n’B artists as of then. In 2020, he released a remix of the song with Runtown.

Adara- Sasha P

Sasha P (formerly Sasha) was once the hottest femcee in the game, having given herself the self-serving title of “the first lady of Nigerian Hip-Hop.” The Omo Ibadan rose to prominence at a time when there were few Nigerian female hip-hop artists.

“Adara” was her biggest song, featured on her debut album, First Lady, released in 2006, and later released as a stand-alone single in 2008. In 2009, the song earned her a UK-based award for Best Female Artiste.

Although she has largely abandoned music in recent years, she devotes the majority of her time and energy to the fashion industry and other humanitarian causes.

For Instance- 2Baba

“For Instance” is a single from 2Baba (Formerly Known as 2face Idibia)‘s second solo album, Grass 2 Grace, released in 2006. In its first week of release, the album sold over a million copies and earned him numerous awards, including the MOBO Award in 2007.

Aside from the magnetizing beat, the lyrics are socio-political in nature calling out corrupt leaders who abuse the trust of the people who put them in power.

Olori Oko- Infinity

Infinity was a popular Gospel Nigerian group made up of Kehinde Akinbode, Joe Okougbo, David Thomas, Samson Nnogo and Sunny Steve. In 2006, they released their album, “Olori Oko‘ with the lead single of the same name to massive success.

“Olori Oko” was not just an anthem in churches but in schools, events, name it. It was a popular choreography tune used by children.

Swo- Marvellous Benjy

There are Nigerian songs that have helped create or propagate dance routine and Marvellous Benjy’s “Swo” is one of those songs. Released in 2006, it was off his “Take Control” album. It is to date Marvellous Benjy’s biggest song.

Why- D’banj

D’banj is a Nigerian musician who uses a fusion of Afrobeat and Afropop to bring his music to life and is considered one of the Nigerian Music Industry’s influential artists.

In 2006, he released his RunDown Funk U Up Album and one of the biggest hits from the song is the uptempo song “Why Me” which was a big hit.

Ijoya- Weird MC

Ijoya is from Weird MC’s second album, After Da Storm, released in 2006. The single “Ijoya,” produced by Don Jazzy and JJC, was a huge success, earning her an AMEN award for Most Pop Song and a Channel O Music Video Award for Best Special Effect.

Kerewa- Zule Zoo

Zule Zoo was a music duo consisting of Ibrahim Alhassan and Mike from Benue state. Their biggest git was ‘Kerewa” which had a groovy and undulating beat that blinded people from the heavily sexual and controversial lyrics.

“Kerewa” in itself is a slang for s*xual intercourse and has two different theories over what the theme of the song is.

One school of thought sees the song from the perspective of a child reporting his mother’s adultery. Another school of thought believes what the child was in fact r*pe taking place.

After he lost his brother and singing partner to the cold hands of death about two years ago, Hi-Speed‘s music career experienced a lull that silenced him for a while but the singer said the sober moment was necessary to mourn his good brother and friend.

According to Hi-Speed, Everything Good EP is a music project that signals the birth of a new beginning for his career after troubled times.

Zule Zoo is a music group made up of 2 guys from Benue State. These guys are Micheal Aboh and Al-Hassan Ibrahim.

The two artistes who hail from different homes for ages were united by fate. The two who have a striking resemblance have been addressed as twins on several occasions. In a bid to clear this one of them said “We are not twins but we have been very close to each other from our childhood days at school.” They are just friends.

How did Zule Zoo start?

Ibrahim Alhassan and Mike came to Lagos in 1996 to attend an audition for the National Troupe of Nigeria which left them disappointed.

“After the NTN’s audition, I had no fare to go back to Benue State, so I decided to stay back and sweat it out with life. There and then, I started working hard to ensure that I realise my ambition to become a star in my lifetime. About that time, Mike who went back to Benue immediately after the audition later returned to join me and that was when we started researching on how to actualise our dream as we later came up with the name, Zule-Zoo, meaning ‘Forgotten warriors never die’,” explained Ibrahim Alhassanin an interview.

Their music career almost ended as soon as it began because their debut song ‘Kerewa” was banned by the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation when it came out in March 2006. Instead of silencing them, the ban actually helped promoting their album, entitled ‘Banned In Nigeria’, which became a nation-wide hit. After a while the song was “un-banned” by the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation.

Micheal Aboh and Al-Hassan Ibrahim (the Zule Zoo brothers) have long shelved their music aspirations and moved on to other events that offer them human satisfaction.
