During his youthful days, Sunday Aare created Nigeria’s one and the only faceless artiste who can sing, dance, and play instruments.

Nigerian producers’ tagging enhances their fame and imprints their names in the minds of listeners.

The truth is we called these tags from memory and that led to the realization as to how we have these Nigerian producer tags engrained into our minds unknowingly.

When I first heard Rema‘s “Bounce,” produced by Don Jazzy, I squinted a little at the opening adlib: “Na who do the beat? Jazzy! ” I recall that moment because, even after dozens of listens, I still get the same emotion.

Don Jazzy

Now that I think about it, my reaction wasn’t actually one of rejection; rather, it was one of sentimentality for the sake of nostalgia.

Mo’ Hits, the Don Jazzy-led crew who held Afropop in a chokehold at will every year, dominated my adolescent and early teen years when I was a kid in the early to mid-1990s.

Don Jazzy

There was an ever-present adlib during that run that will go down in Nigerian pop music history: “It’s Don Jazzy Again!”

Rema‘s adlib at the start of “Bounce” isn’t completely unfamiliar Wande Coal utilized it on “Taboo” but it didn’t feel powerful enough to declare a towering, era-defining super-producer to my old self.

It’s been 11 years since Dagrin passed but not once has the music industry forgotten the music icon that changed the game with his ghetto style songs.

While Lord of Ajasa is credited as one of the first rappers to pioneer rapping in Yoruba, Dagrin is seen as the rapper that made Yoruba rap songs cool and popularized them, paving way for artists like Olamide and Reminisce.

Today we would be looking at the best rap verses from Dagrin on songs in which he was featured on.

This was one of the best tracks that Dagrin ever featured on. “123” is still one of the best rap songs to come out of the Nigerian rap community. Despite being surrounded by other prolific English rappers like M.I Abaga and Naeto C, Dagrin didn’t fail to deliver.

Turn Me Around- Kenny St Brown (KSB)

Kenny Saint Brown-turn Me Around

Dagrin might be street but just like most artists, he has reverence for the divine being. Produced by Sheyman, “Turn Me Around” shows Dagrin paying reverence to God for his success. I wish he was featured on more gospel songs before his death.

Mercies Of The Lord Remix-Oritse Femi

Dagrin’s verse on this song is one of his best. It’s as good as any verse Dagrin ever dropped. It had everything and in his usual manner, he never strayed from the central theme and topic of the song.

Lowkey, ‘Mercies of the Lord Remix,’ was bigger than the original because of Dagrin.

Ako Mi Ti Poju-Naeto C

Naeto C- Ako Mi ti poju

Ako Mi Ti Poju is the second song Dagrin and Naeto C collaborated on. For some reason, this song is one of Dagrin‘s underrated collaboration. But when it comes down to it, it displays his ability to discuss the vanity with his trademark roots in archetypal Hip-Hop.

At the beginning of Dagrin’s verse, the beat switches to announce his arrival on the song to which he doesn’t disappoint with lyrical wordplays

The part of, “Mo lo sa ATM, mo gba gbem, Mo mu Sagem, so I call all of them…” will always be impressive.

Owo Ati Swagga- Cartiair

Cartiair-Owo Ti Swagger

In 2009, Nigerian rapper, Cartiair dropped what is now clear was a trap song. It was the smash hit single, ‘Owo Ati Swagger,’ with the beat sampled from Lil Wayne’s 2008 “Milli” song, the song glorified all things prim, proper and bougie.

While the song was a successful hit the remix was unsurprisingly not as big. However, Dagrin’s verse on the song is unforgettable. While the song dropped in December 2009, it did not really take off till after Dagrin passed.

He took the beat and dropped a delivery that merged the central theme of braggadocio and vanity with impressive bars. It’s hard to forget his wordplay with the metaphors of the crotch, Gucci, Prada, Barbers and Clippers and how he was not, ‘a rapper, but a lyrical tyrant.’

Dagrin remains one of the most respected rappers to have ever lived, in Nigeria. To this kind that he’s been dead for close to a decade, is funny, because most of his songs still come through as evergreen. You can’t get tired of ’em. It’s not like the Radios and TV’s spin Dagrin’s music, anyway.

But, boy, he made some very good music, when he was alive. He sure didn’t live long enough to have as many albums or tracks as Olamide, but he’s got a classic catalog, that is full of great music and then some.

Today is Thursday, and while we’re doing some Throwback, we thought there’s no better time than now to give y’all some old Dagrin songs that are more motivational, than just the usual ‘braggadocious’ Dagrin vibe.

Ghetto Dream ft. Sossick

Arguably, one of Dagrin’s best songs. It was such a big hit and was on the “C.E.O” album. His longtime producer, Sossick was on the song and he delivered the perfect hook, for an inspiring tune.

“Sometimes, when I sleep and I’m dreaming, man, I don’t just wanna wake up… ”

Dagrin did a lot of bars, on this one, talking about how he was coming up and his big dreams. Classic.

Everyday

This is like Nigeria’s “Hard Knock Life.” It was real hip-hop, and Dagrin took on his storytelling style to talk about how he’s hustling every day.

The beat, the sample, the rhymes, lyrics and literally everything on the song is cool. Not to forget the inspiration it’s got. You might wanna put this on some time for some early morning motivation.

I Made It ft. Iceberg Slim

One thing is, Dagrin is a dope rapper, not only because he makes good songs, but also because he knows how to collaborate with other artists. Many of his big hits have been collaborations, especially with singers, since he barely does his hook.

Iceberg Slim put the Yoruba rapper, on this funky hip-hop single, “I Made It” and as expected the lyricist breathed some life into the music.

The chorus is electric though, and you might wanna give Iceberg Slim, proper kudos for that!

Efimile

Remember that thing about collaboration? Yeah, Dagrin was never short of collaborations, everyone loved him.

Well, at the time YQ was one hell of a singer, who has delivered amazing hooks for rappers, including M.I Abaga. It was only a matter of time before he hooked up with Grin.

“Efimile” is like a song for haters and enemies who are trying to take his shine away from him. Well, everyone’s got that. Hip-hop, as usual, and could put some real-life lessons into your head. Really.

Iwofa

Bigiano is known for his hot club tracks back then, and his very catchy lyrics. Dagrin, his indigenous hip-hop style that was starting to gain traction in the mainstream.

“Iwofa” actually had a dance hall beat, but still had some inspirational lyrics. It’s even better if you knew it, back then. A little bit of nostalgia will make it even better.

His bars are dope as ever, bouncing and all that. He did his signature chuckle on it, too. And Sheyman produced this track. So, next time you wondering where that guy earned his bragging rights? Dagrin.

What other Dagrin songs do you remember?

On the morning Jaywon dropped his new single “Saro,” he had been on a popular Radio show. Once I heard that voice, I knew it was one of the best out of Nigeria. It was early in the morning, think I just woke, so I couldn’t figure who it was, but I had listened on with rap attention. As he spoke, answering questions, I felt that inspirational aura all over me. Just then, I just said out loud; “Jay-Won!” I thought I screamed.

As the show went on, the lady that was in the studio throwed him a question (can’t remember) and then Jaywon starts speaking, almost emotionally. He then said something that struck me hard. Jaywon said lately people, dons in the industry he didn’t expect, had called him telling him he’s been doing funny, and that he needs to go back, and bring back the Jaywon of the old days. The Jaywon that dropped one of the most evergreen songs in Nigeria pop history. The Jaywon whose songs carry inspiration. The old Jaywon. And, so, he had gone back and worked on “Saro!” I shivered!

I downloaded “Saro” not knowing what to expect, to be honest. The only Jaywon playing in my head is “Ma Sun,” a song everyone will agree is Jaywon’s song, but is not Jaywon. So, I just kept my hopes high.

Afterall, Jaywon is one of the bests to ever do this stuff. Known for his evergreen hit “Odun Yi,” which he did while he was under Kennis Music. Although, he’s done a lot of songs, after that. Many didn’t hit the bar he raised for himself. And 90% of ’em just finds him trying to jump into trends and make hits. That’s the case with his recent “Ma Sun,” and songs like “Another Level” featuring Mr Eazi. He did “Joromi,” got dragged for it. He’s even done collabos with Vector, YQ, Reekado Banks, Oritse Femi, Small Doctor. Not that anything’s really wrong with it. But, the problem remains the Jaywon we know is different. He’s raised the bar higher than all what he’s delivering. Then….

Saro!
“Saro” is Jaywon, the Jaywon we’ve longed for, all the while. To make this song “Saro,” he goes a bit alternative, and puts on that Afro-fusion vibe.. Not only does the instrumental by Blaq Jerzee fit Jay so much, but he also shows us that he’s a good songwriter. The storyline is intact, from A-Z. His diction and mood, fits perfectly. And then with the lyrics and the beat. He didn’t lose focus as he tries to make the hook catchy. What else? Nothing better could have happened. “Saro” is a perfect jam. You feel that feeling rush down your spine, as you listen.

For many years, we’ve waited for a day we can talk about Jaywon in this classic manner. And, yeah, it’s finally here. “Saro” did the magic. With all confidence, I can say, this is the best Jaywon song you’ll find, anywhere on this planet. He raised the bar even higher than we expected!

If there’s really an ex of his called Saro, Jaywon should just call her and say “Thank you!”

Onome Onokohwomo (born 8 July 1989), better known by his stage name Yung6ix, is a Nigerian hip hop recording artist.

Onokohwomo was born and raised in Warri, Delta State. He grew up as the oldest child in a family of five, and took a strong interest in music at a young age. While a student at FGC Warri, he engaged himself in rap battles and developed a friendlier relationship with like-minded students, which led to the formation of the hip hop group G-Squad. The group soon began performing at various talent shows in Delta State.

Music remained their unmatched and true passion. In a 2012 interview with Thisday news, Yung6ix recalled, “My love for music was so deep and I just kept on going till it got to a level they had to accept me for who I am. Funny though, the first song I recorded at school was used with my WAEC lesson fee to pay for the instrumentals and remember always having to trek from school to studio for close to 2 hours or more. It was really tough back then at school too as we weren’t allowed to do our thing like we would love to but our passion just kept us going stronger & tougher.

After graduating from high school, Onokohwomo relocated to western Nigeria to pursue a career in music and enrolled at Oduduwa University. He derived his stage name Yung6ix from his high school nickname “6ixty”. Shortly after he moved to Lagos, he continued to record music; his song “I’m an African” captured the attention of A&R Gbemi Ereku, who signed him to his 411 Entertainment Company in 2009. By 2010, he began to attract media attention after his cover version of “Oleku” went viral on the internet. He later released “So Far Gone”, featuring P. Fizzy, a single off his Green Light Green mixtape. The song was a freestyle to Wiz Khalifa’s “This Plane”. In January 2011, 6ix released “Plenty Money”, another track from the mixtape; an accompanying music video was released shortly after. The song made its official Nigerian radio premiere on the Beat 99.9 FM.

On 2 April 2011, Vanguard announced that 411 Entertainment had signed a joint-venture deal with Storm Records. The partnership would help improve Yung6ix’s music career. Yung6ix collaborated with Wizkid on “Follow Me”, a track from his debut studio album. Following the release of the song, an accompanying music video was filmed; it was directed by Bobby Boulders. In September 2011, Yung6ix released the fourth track from his Green Light Green project, “Oh My Gosh”, which earned him both “Lyricist on the Roll” and “Best Rap Single” nominations at the Headies Awards the following year.

Green Light Green was originally slated for an April 2011 release, however, it was finally released on 26 December 2011. The music video for “Oh My Gosh”, which was directed by Bobby Boulders, was released in January 2012. It was filmed in Lagos and Johannesburg, with cameo appearances by Naeto C, Jesse Jagz, DJ Neptune, and P. Fizzy. Yung6ix was among the rappers featured on M.I’s Illegal Music 2; M.I subsequently co-signed and nicknamed him the “King of the South”.

In May 2012, “Picking Things”, the second single from his debut album was released. The song features fellow ex-label mates Naeto C and E. Kelly. The next month, in an interview with blogger Ogaga Sakpaide, Yung6ix revealed the album’s title to be 6ix ‘O Clock. He also received a nomination for the “Most Promising Act” at the 2012 Nigeria Entertainment Awards, but lost to Eva Alordiah.

In 2013, Yung6ix floated his imprint “Kash Kamp” which houses Percy as well as talented producer Otee Beatz. On 4 September 2013, Yung6ix’s camp welcomed a hand offered from “Trick Billionaire MusiQ” for both parties to partner with the end-result of taking Yung6ix and his brand out of Africa and sharing his brilliance with the rest of the world. Yung6ix collaborated with Percy on “First Class”, the third single from his album. He also released a music video for the song which earned him a “Best Hip Hop Video” nomination at the 2013 Nigerian Music Video Awards. 6ix’s debut full-length studio album, 6ix O Clock, was eventually released on 6 February 2014. The 16-track album features guest appearances from Phyno, Percy, Da L.E.S, M.I, Ice Prince, Yemi Alade, YQ, and Wizkid.
