YouTube has unveiled its 2022 End of Year lists rating the top trending videos, music videos, Shorts, and creators in Nigeria today.

The most significant events that will occur in 2022 will be reflected in this year’s lists, including the performance video for the song Overloading by Mavins, Crayon, Ayra Starr, LADIPOE, Magixx, and Boy Spyce, Episode 24 of Selena Tested, and the Nollywood romantic comedy SELINA from Uduak Isong TV.

Some of Nigeria’s top creators and entertainers make the lists. Names like Oga Sabinus, Burna Boy, Asake, Skiibii, Kizz Daniel, Fireboy DML, REMA, KieKieTV, TAAOOMA’S CABIN, BrainJotter Comedian, The Geng and more make the lists this year.

The Top Trending Videos list is based on a range of factors – beyond just views – that indicate how “trending” a video really is. The YouTube Culture & Trends team also considers engagement and looks at signals like shares and likes of a certain video.

YouTube announced that YouTube Shorts are being watched by over 1.5B logged-in users every month and averaging over 30 billion daily views. The company also announced that YouTube paid more than 50 Billion (USD) to creators, artists, and media companies in the 3 years before June 2022.

More than two million people participate in YouTube’s partnerships program around the world. YouTube’s subscription services, YouTube Premium and YouTube Music, now have more than 80 million users, including trailers, around the world.

YouTube has announced a stellar lineup of artists hailing from five countries, who will be performing at this year’s Africa Day Concert. Like previous editions, the Africa Day Concert which is in its third year will be hosted by superstar Idris Elba. The annual concert is a musical homage to Africa, showcasing the vibrant African music stars who are making headlines across the world.

The concert seeks to bring Africans, the Diaspora, and people from across the world together to celebrate a continent that is home to more than 1.5 billion people and is spawning new ways of artistic expression. This year’s concert will feature artists from Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, South Africa, and Congo who are set to perform. The concert will be streamed exclusively on YouTube at 19:00 CAT / 18:00 WAT on the 25th of May, 2022.

The Africa Day Concert promises show-stopping performances from talented African music stars. “YouTube as a platform has been mainline for connecting African artists to people all around the world and the Africa Day Concert is an opportunity to reaffirm YouTube’s support for African artists as they showcase the vibrant sounds and culture that makes Africa truly unique”, says Alex Okosi, Managing Director, Emerging Markets, YouTube EMEA.

The highly anticipated concert will showcase musical performances that will be streamed to a global audience.  From Nigeria, talented music artists, D’banj, Davido, CKay, Yemi Alade, Reekado Banks, and Mayorkun will be performing at the virtual concert this year. Also performing from the West African region is popular Sierra Leonean recording and performing artist, Drizilik.

Music streaming platform, YouTube has announced a series of events to run throughout the month of May in celebration of Africa month. The events are intended to reaffirm YouTube’s commitment to growing Africa’s creator ecosystem and to spotlight and celebrate the artists and creatives who are driving the growth of Afrobeats and Africa’s music industry.

Content creators in Africa will receive support from YouTube through virtual and in-person training and workshops to help them grow their channels and improve their skills. These include a Creator 360 virtual workshop, which will allow African content creators to collaborate and share skills, and in-person Creator Day workshops, which will be led by industry experts and help aspiring creators learn the skills they need to continue thriving on YouTube. YouTube will also offer workshops under its Future Insiders Program to empower budding producers and songwriters with hands-on training taught by seasoned producers such as Sarz and Musa Keys.

The YouTube Africa Day Concert, in partnership with Idris Elba, will return for the third year in a row as part of the Africa Month lineup. The concert will include an in-person event in Nigeria that will be live-streamed on YouTube, featuring some of the continent’s hottest artists. The programme seeks to showcase and support content creators from across the continent and extend YouTube’s commitment to nurturing black creators and artists as part of the #YouTubeBlack Voices programme.

The YouTube Africa Creator Week 2021 runs from 29 November to 3 December 2021 offering a variety of activities to celebrate and support creators on the continent. Highlights of the week-long programme include three motivational creator talks and a masterclass focused on teaching creators how to diversify their revenue streams and increase their income.

A storyteller video series, Stories Behind the Storytellers (https://goo.gle/thestoryteller), will spotlight the journeys of nine top African creators who are growing their fandom through inspirational storytelling and will also premiere at the event. The nine storytellers, from Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa, who will be featured are:

Recent YouTube statistics illustrate the significant growth of the creative community across Africa. Nigeria has over 500 channels which boast over 100 thousand subscribers, an increase of over 60 percent from the previous year. In Kenya, over 300 channels have over 100 thousand subscribers – an increase of over 90 percent, year on year; while in South Africa, over 250 channels now have over 100 thousand subscribers – a year-on-year increase of over 60 percent.

“YouTube has been a partner to a generation of creators, from around the world, who have turned their creativity into businesses. In Africa, we are working to advance the discovery and development of the next generation of creators. We are focused on investing with an emphasis  on connection, inspiration and the celebration of the uniqueness of black African voices”, Awofisayo concludes.

In January, 19 creators and four artists from Sub-Saharan Africa were selected from 132 creators around the world to receive funding from the #YouTubeBlack Voices Fund as part of the 2021 #YouTubeBlack Voices Creator Class.

The #YouTubeBlack Voices Music Class of 2022, announced earlier this year, also includes eight artists, songwriters and producers from Africa. YouTube Shorts, which was introduced to the region this year, is also enabling creators to share their stories and creativity through catchy videos made using their mobile phones.

1. Spice up your video with music

Without music in the background, your YouTube Shorts video can appear boring. You can add music to your Shorts by tapping the Add Music icon at the top and selecting one of the preset songs.

That way you can then create lip sync and dancing videos using the song. You can also add audio from other YouTube videos into your YouTube Shorts video.

To add music, click on the ‘Add Music’ tab and you’ll be taken to a library of music from famous artists that you can use. The page also shows which tracks are most often used in Shorts videos.

2. Adjust the speed of your video to suit your idea

FEM- Davido:

Arguably, FEM can fit into more than one genre of music. Its uniqueness has made it a diversified song not only to be classified as an Afrobeat but a street jam.

Davido, a legend in the game made it clear lyrically that his hater should “fem” (stay quiet), and insists rather passionately ‘dey para for me’.

The song, though delivered expertly in typical Davido fashion, is apparently an album song and not a standalone single.

With over a 25million streams on Audiomack, FEM by Davido tops our list.

Cash App- Bella Shmurda ft Zlatan & Lincoln:

Newbies are not excluded from our list of street bangers if their songs did magnificently well in 2020.

Bella Shmurda, though being a newbie to the game made it as number 2 with his Cash App gbedu.

The 23-year-old singer made it to the spotlight with his hit song Vision 2020 and later did a remix with Olamide in 2019.

Unlike the likes of Davido who have stayed prominent for over a decade now, the singer’s Cash App song paved more way for his young career.

With 18.4 million streams on Audiomack, Cash App still has the highest streams Bella Shmurda has gathered on any single.

Abule- Patoranking:

Patoranking‘s Abule ranks number 3  on the list of 10 Naija street songs with over 16 million streams on Audiomack.

Abule by Patoranking depicts the lifestyle of the singer’s home town Ebute-metta.

In this song, the singer describes his community, the fun they have, and how dearly he holds on to his locale.

Officially released in the singer’s album “Three“, Abule is a street anthem that is sung almost everywhere.

Ma Pariwo- Zinoleesky:

Ma Pariwo is a soft street love track you can conveniently add to your late-night playlist.

The song currently has over 15million views on Audiomack, making it our number 4 song.

The fast-rising singer has proven himself last year, and without an iota of doubt, we anticipate he will do the same this year.

Marlian Music boss Naira Marley released this street banger on June 29, 2020.

The duo’s creative initiative deduced a song from this popular Lagos slang Ko Por Ke. No doubt it is a street anthem in almost every nook and corner of Lagos.

Mohbad showed how talented he is and Rexxie made known the producer in him to the world.

With over 11 million streams on Audiomack, Ko Por Ke is the 6th street jam on our list.

Way Too Big- Burna Boy:

Twice as Tall has gotten great reviews since its release with Way Too Big being one of the popular hit tracks on it.

Way Too Big is a smooth Hip-hop song with a stint of Afro-pop.

Burna Boy found a way to succinctly fuse two or more genres together with this song, so how it got into the street banger hits should not surprise you.

The global $100m fund will, over the next three years, offer support to Black artists and creators so that they can thrive on YouTube.

Interested artists and creators can apply for funding here.

The Black Voices Fund, says Alex Okosi, MD, Emerging Markets, YouTube EMEA, will invest with the intention to “present fresh narratives that emphasize the intellectual power, authenticity, dignity, and joy of Black voices, as well as to educate audiences about racial justice”.

The $100m fund was first announced in June. It has since been officially named the #YouTubeBlack Voices Fund.

This year, says Okosi, the fund will be focusing its efforts on creators within the US, Brazil and Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa. “Our goal is to expand funding to more countries over the course of the next three years,” he adds. “Additionally, we hope to provide a consistent drumbeat of educational training, workshops, and community events to Black creators and artists globally.”

The #YouTubeBlack Voices Fund is part of the work currently underway to ensure that YouTube is a place where Black artists, creators, and users can share their stories and be protected.

“Along with our commitment to amplifying marginalized voices on the content side, we are also investing in product and policy changes that will continue to advance YouTube’s mission of giving everyone a voice and showing them the world,” Okosi adds.

YouTube believes that it is only by taking a stand against those who would try to bully, harass, silence, and intimidate others that it truly moves closer to achieving this mission.

Its new efforts include ramping up enforcement and terminating more accounts that repeatedly post hateful comments. It is also in the process of rolling out product changes to make creator moderation tools more streamlined.
