Nigerian folk legend Beautiful Nubia has sparked controversy online after accusing gospel musicians Yinka Ayefele and rising act BBO of lifting the melody of his 1997 classic Seven Lifes without permission.

Taking to X on Thursday, Beautiful Nubia, whose real name is Segun Akinlolu, expressed frustration over what he described as repeated copyright violations by gospel artists.

He specifically called out Ayefele’s 2012 track, My Faith in God (Igbagbo Ireti), and BBO’s 2026 release, Amin, claiming both borrowed the core melody from his original composition.

“There was Yinka Ayefele with My Faith in God (Igbagbo Ireti) in 2012 and now someone called BBO with Amin this year. Both stole their melodies from our original song Seven Lifes,” he wrote. “When will Nigerians (especially the so-called gospel musicians) learn to respect copyright?”

The folk singer’s comments highlight ongoing debates about intellectual property in Nigeria’s music industry, particularly regarding gospel artists’ adherence to copyright laws.

As of now, neither Yinka Ayefele nor BBO has publicly responded to the allegations, leaving fans and industry watchers waiting for a reaction.

“Pepper Dem Gang” is a street hop song released in 2016 by Olamide featuring former label signee, Davolee. The song was a hit that not only dominated playlists but its title became a street slang that vene inspired street wears and funny pictures to follow.

However, some of the lyrics in the song have us asking questions. In verse two, Olamide sings, ‘Baby Aaliyah cause you fly die.‘ If you don’t know who Aaliyah is, you might not understand why this particular lyric is wild.

Aaliyah was an American singer and actress who died at the age of 22 in an aeroplane accident in the Bahamas, when the overloaded aircraft she was travelling in crashed shortly after takeoff, killing all nine on board.

So Olamide is making a reference to the death of Aaliyah by a plane crash and using it as a form of compliment for his love interest is just so, ‘wow’.

In response to a supposed Tik Tok video that went viral on Tuesday and claimed that he was dead, Ayefele reacted.

It was gathered that the widely watched video, which was said to have been made by one David had his pictures and that of his triplet with a dirge from gospel singer Tope Alabi as the soundtrack.

Ayefele responded to the rumour by stating that he had several calls from friends and loved ones yesterday asking how he was doing.

The artist verified his existence and good health in an interview with the Nigerian Tribune on Tuesday night. He also questioned why someone would make a video to propagate false information about his death.

“A lot of my fans and admirers from all over the world kept calling to find out what really happened. On realising it was fake news, they started cursing those behind it.

“I wish to tell Nigerians that I am hale and hearty and not dead. I am not even under the weather. For someone to conjure up this kind of wickedness is disheartening. I have handed over those behind it to God who will mete out appropriate punishment to them.

“My fans, please disregard the rumour. If Jesus tarries, we will be here for a long time.”

Recall that Yinka Ayefele was forced to use a wheelchair as a result of a terrible car accident that occurred on December 12, 1997.

Today, December 12, 2022, is the 25th anniversary of his survival in the tragic incident.

Ayefele showed old images of the severely damaged Volkswagen Beetle that was involved in the collision that forced him into a wheelchair and described it as his “turning point.”

The husband and father of three conveyed his thankfulness to God and encouraged his supporters to do the same.

Sharing the pictures, the singer wrote in the caption:

“It’s exactly 25 years ago today.. Just keep thanking God on my behalf…It Was on the 12th of December 1997. My Turing point.. I shall forever be grateful to the owner of my destiny.”

He gave the car to a well-known radio personality who works at Fresh FM, his station.

He asked one of his employees to give the lucky staff by the name Ayoade Dada, who is also known as Radiobulldozer, the key to the car.

Radiobulldozer posted a video of when the event occurred. In the video, he could be seen almost in tears at the presentation of his gift.
