Nas’ latest album, King’s Disease II, has been released, Eminem, EPMD, Ms. Lauryn Hill, Blxst, YG, Charlie Wilson, and others appear in the follow-up to King’s Disease.

Nas had his 14th Grammy nomination for King’s Disease, as well as his first win when the singer took home the award for Best Rap Album in 2021.

Nas and Hit-Boy, who appear on the song “Composure,” executive produce the second King’s Disease.

Tinashe – 333

She’s made it clear that she wants to be known as a Pop princess, and her recent album may have helped her achieve that goal.

 

Tinashe has been amassing success for years and now that she’s an independent artist, she’s able to create the type of music that she loves.

Back in 2019, Tinashe revealed that she cleaned the house and got rid of her management and label before embarking on a new journey where she was able to collaborate and express herself as she sees fit.

Ayra Starr – 19 and Dangerous

Ayra Starr, a Mavin Records singer, and composer, has finally released her much-anticipated debut album, “19 & Dangerous.”

On track six, “Beggie Beggie,” Warner Music artists CKay and Fousheé appear, while on track four, “Snitch,” Warner Music artists CKay and Fousheé appear.

Among the producers who contributed to the project were Don Jazzy, London, Louddaaa, and Andre Vibez.

The tracks on this album were mixed and mastered by Johnny Drille.

This comes only a few days after she released her debut amapiano single, “Bloody Samaritan,” produced by London.

Fredo – Independence Day

Cut through the coarse edges of ‘Independence Day, the latest album by west London rapper Fredo, and there lies another statement project.

After his pop-leaning tendencies of 2020, namely, the saccharine ‘Hickory Dickory Dock’, which has now disappeared off streaming services and been disowned by him – the 27-year-old rapper doubles down on his road-rap roots.

Throughout the 14-track album, Fredo spits bars upon a tightrope of taut tension yearning to be taken seriously again.

In 2020, he lost out on a BET Hip-Hop award to British rapper Stormzy, Nasty C went up against Kenyan artist Khaligraph Jones, UK’s Stormzy and Ms Banks, French stars Meryl and Kaaris, and Djonga from Brazil.

Also in 2020, he released his third studio album via Def Jam Records titled ‘Zulu Man with Some Power’ with guest artists like T.I., Ari Lennox, Lil Keed, Lil Gotit, and Rowlene.

In fact, not even close anymore. The young singer just bagged a Recording Academy nomination for the 62nd Grammy’s, and even though the show is still upcoming, Burna Boy has already won. Maybe not the award (yet), but no doubt he’s won.

“African Giant”, the album he dropped a couple of months back, that had all the good stuff (“Dangote”, “Anybody”, “Pull Up”) and also featured top dawgs like Damian Marley, Jorja Smith, and YG. The album which is classified under “afrobeats”, “afro-pop” and “afro-fusion” is one of, if not the best project from a mainstream artist this year. And pretty soon, we might just have a Grammy to show for it.

What does this mean for industry, anyway? Burna getting nominated, prospects of winning the first Gramophone? To start with, this nomination goes a long way to tell us that afro really is the key and Nigerian artists might not even need to tune their sounds and sound ‘international’ before getting attention, overseas.

Before Burna Boy, Wizkid almost got a Grammy back in ’16, for his contribution to Drake’s biggest work to date, “Views.” But the days leading up to that, were days of Wizkid doing the groundwork, finessing his sound, evolving and possibly changing his whole creative process. The Ojuelegba boy had to be heard. Chances are, as a raw Afro-pop wunderkind, the best he would have been was Nigeria’s best.

Although story seems far-fetched, before Wizkid, D’banj has also been noted for bringing the African sound to the international front, back when he was in his peak. But really, we all know what he did, he took the African face abroad, made some money, maybe, but the sound didn’t stick.

Fast forward to a few years after and Wiz was doing things, Tiwa Savage was getting signed by Jay-Z (recently Mo’town), even alté artists like Odunsi are signing international deals. That period was when the work was being done and Nigerian music was gaining the recognition it deserved.

And though, it doesn’t seem like that, a Grammy Award is imminent. “African Giant” happened to come at the right time, when Burna was a powerhouse and he was topping the charts, effortlessly. There was no struggle between him and any other artist, in fact, he was even getting support from out there.

The album also put on some great guys who are making stuff happen abroad. YG, for example, is one of the most featured artists in 2019 (in the US, of course) and Angelique Kidjo is a Grammy favorite. Damian is the son of late Reggae Legend, Bob Marley and also a star himself while M.anifest is one of the hottest on the Ghanaian rap scene. Zlatan Ibile was also hot on the streets.

All that put together, and we have a Grammy nomination in front of us and it’s not just for Burna’s contribution to someone else’s work, it’s for his own project, our project! In the long run, what this means to the industry is that the labor of our heroes past (from Fela to KSA, to 2baba to D’banj to Wizkid) finally isn’t in vain. This is just the beginning!

In this case, however, Burna Boy isn’t even a newcomer. But, a couple of months back, he was just the Burna Boy everyone just likes. Today, he’s got more credibility, home and abroad. Beyonce wouldn’t make an album featuring top African artists and not put Burna on it and BET wouldn’t give anyone else their Awards. Not a bad track record for an artist who was on the Next Rated list, just five seasons ago. Right?

“Outside” cemented his name in the Afrobeat hall of fame, and he officially crossed over with the crisp body of work that housed the super hit, “Ye”, which was 2018’s Song Of The Year. He was also awarded “Artist Of The Year”, and in the months that followed the groundbreaking album, he went on to prove his hit-making prowess to everyone. “Gbona”, “On The Low”, “Killing Dem”, “Dangote” and more.

Burna has thrilled us all. But a new album? Well, that’s quite a bold move. Especially now that the days are hard. No one is expecting more than one hit now and then. But Burna upped the game, and this is coming without so much hype you would have expected.

The “Dangote” singer never disappoints, I’ll give him that one. So, 19 tracks of new material from him, is definitely supposed to be worth the while. Not everything on the project is entirely new, anyway.

Talk of super-hits like “On The Low” and “Gbona”, which were some of last year’s biggest hits. The Zanku-themed “Killing Dem” which featured street singer Zlatan Ibile, also made the shot. There was “Dangote”, which was Burna Boy’s intro this year and then, “AnyBody” which isn’t such an old one anyway.

He started off with “African Giant” (yeah, the title track), a rather conscious vibe, which sounds like something that was done in one take. His lyrics weren’t that deep, but he did call himself “Omo Ologo” (that’s Yoruba for “glorious child”). And what’s that sample at the end, by the way?

The pre-released “AnyBody” followed, with an even more contagious vibe and some angelic trumpet sounds, to match. “Wetin Man Go Do” wasn’t rasta or anything but he got a dance hall tune, a catchy one. No back-up vocals, just pure fire ‘burn a boy’ stuff. And then the ad-libs.

“Dangote” is a bit faster, you’ll think he got the new Tesla and replaced his old car. Maybe not? Same lyric, but goes without saying, it seemed a bit different on album.

Burna Boy’s part might have been cut off Drake’s “More Life” Playlist back then, but this Jorja Smith collaboration will do just fine. Burna with the vibe, Jorja with the finesse. You could say she murdered him on “Gum Body”. No one would be angry, it’s Jorja Smith.

“Omo” is about girl-power, should be some Movie Soundtrack or something. Oh, the girl he was describing sounds like Beyonce. Afro-beat, not a catchy one you could be singing around, but it’s got a vibe, and also some bass. “Fine like Omotola.”

Jeremih’s influence, maybe, but “Secret” is a different one for Burna. Some alternative Afro thingy and Burna wasn’t doing the hook. Weird, right? I know. But it will suffice.

“Collateral Damage” isn’t perfect, anyone would like it, but it’s flawed a bit. Mad beat, but what he was doing wasn’t clear. His vocals were still as good as ever, anyway.

“Another Story” will give you instant chills, just as the skit ends. It’s the raw-est vibe on the LP. Socio-political views, Fela vibes. Why M.anifest? “Same thing, Ghana Naija,” Ghana’s rap god said it, not me.

A few days before the album officially came, “Pull Up” was online, and it instantly registered as the next big hit of 2019. Fire hook, contagious beat and why do I have to say, Burna! As it happened, “Pull Up” was on the album, even though it sounds like it wasn’t made for the album. It’s a hit single potential. But he was screaming “African Giant” on the end, so I plan on knocking myself out.

Blak Ryno‘s electric skit was connected to  “Destiny”, a track with a confusing instrumental pattern with a story-line. From there, the album went deep.

Burna put on his Don Gorgon ego on “Different” shortly afterward with much-respected Reggae singer, Damian Marley putting his Rasta vibe on the dancehall-afro. Legendary female vocalist, Angelique Kidjo had some stuff on there some east African will kill for, on there.

“Show & Tell” and “This Side” are pretty much just show-off for collaborations. The former had trap star, Future and the other, popular hip-hop artist, YG. Just good ’ol afro x hip-hop tunes.

It needs with something for the parties, “Spiritual” a very electric type of vibe, with every line of it echoing Dotman, for some reason.

Bottom line, Burna wouldn’t give us an album just to fail us. But you already know that. So I’d just say, he didn’t out-perform himself, as anyone might have imagined. But these are trying times, and “African Giant” is gold!

The year started off great for the Afrofusion artiste Burna Boy with hits like “Killin Dem”, featuring Zlatan, “Dangote”, “Anybody” and “Pull up”, which was released on Monday 22nd July 2019. This 7th body of work is a testament to his development and growth as an artist.   

It is often said, both in religious texts and folklore, that the number 7 is an auspicious sign from our guardian angels that one is on the right life path. It means one will overcome all obstacles and realize success in all endeavors.

Every song on this album stands out, from the musical arrangement to the message which is both introspective and thoughtful.

We are treated to the sounds of the motherland – Africa, with collaborations from Grammy award-winning musicians Angelique Kidjo and the “Junior Gong,” Damian Marley on the track “Different” and features from a cross selection of critically acclaimed artists like M.anifest from Ghana, Jeremih, Future and YG from the United States, Jorja Smith from the United Kingdom and Jamaican dancehall artiste Serani.

Known for philosophical messages of holding steadfast to achieving one’s dreams, standing up for the right and just, calling out bad leadership and rising up to change our society, Burna Boy presents this album artwork with hidden details, clues, and tributes. The album artwork is inspired by the first Nigerian Ten Naira note on which Alvan Ikoku, one of Nigeria’s foremost educationists, free primary education activist and advocate for learning/gaining knowledge was immortalized for his belief in one’s ability and right to be free to pursue a better life.
