Spotify released a mini-documentary to celebrate the 10th anniversary of YBNL, the culture-shifting Afrobeats label founded by Nigerian music icon, Olamide.

Over the course of a decade, YBNL has developed a reputation for taking the sounds of the street to global ears through showcasing Afrobeats stars and producing definitive hits.

To celebrate 10 years of the legendary Nigerian label, Spotify took to the streets of Lagos to document its influence. You can follow the groundbreaking YBNL story through the voices of music lovers on the streets of Lagos.

Speaking on the label’s impact, Spotify’s Head of Music for Sub-Saharan Africa, Phiona Okumu said, “Over the last decade, YBNL has become a true Afrobeats success story. Spotify is glad to celebrate the growing legacy of its artists, their music and its influence in Nigeria, across Africa and globally”

Since 2012, Olamide has discovered, developed and exported some of Nigeria’s brightest music stars through YBNL. From inception to date, some of the talents signed or endorsed include Adekunle Gold, Lil Kesh, Fireboy, Asake, Pheelz, Young Jonn, DJ Enimoney, Zlatan, Naira Marley, T.I Blaze, Ycee, Viktoh, Chinko Ekun, and many more.

Here are 10 defining moments in YBNL history that have held significance over the years:

The release of Olamide’s second studio album, titled YBNL, marked the birth of his independent label.

Ghost Mode, a 2012 rap collaboration between Olamide and rapper Phyno was a cultural phenomenon that inspired a joint album. It is remembered as one of the best Afrobeats collaborations.

Led by Eleda Mi O and Durosoke, Baddest Guy Ever Liveth cemented the label’s A-list status. Pheelz, Olamide’s go-to producer, produced all tracks but one.

The success of Shoki Remix, supported by two titans in Davido and Olamide, rapidly elevated the status of Lil Kesh, the first of many young artists signed to YBNL.

Surrounded by signees and affiliates, Olamide made his fourth studio album, Street OT, into a YBNL showcase, giving platform to B Banks, Viktoh, Chinko Ekun and Lil Kesh.

Following a successful 2014, Olamide held “Olamide Live In Concert” at Lagos’ Eko Hotel. It was a huge success and became a December staple.

Released in 2018, the YBNL Mafia Family featured songs by all the label’s artists, including the hit Jealous and a certain Fireboy.

In 2020, Olamide announced a joint deal with the international distribution company, EMPIRE, giving YBNL artists greater access to the global audience.

Fireboy’s Peru was released as a freestyle and became one of the most viral Afrobeats songs of 2021. It inspired a remix with Ed Sheeran, which has over 100 million Spotify streams.

With the release of Omo Ope (featuring Olamide), and Asake signing to the label in February 2022, YBNL entered its 10th chapter in style.

30BG: Davido’s ‘30 Billion Gang’ is top among the list of fan bases in Nigeria.

The music star fan base is another army in the Nigerian entertainment industry and can do anything to rival fan bases of other top Nigerian music artists especially Wizkid & Burna Boy.

Davido is one of the most followed African celebrities on Instagram with 18.5 million followers while he has 8.5 million followers on Twitter.

Olamide – Ybnl Mafia

Olamide fans are called Ybnl soldiers, known for their calm and defensive die-hard fans in the music industry.

Hours after his shocking conduct on stage at the Headies 2015 awards ceremony, Olamide has stepped forward to apologize to his fans.

Olamide. (Instagram) “I am to apologize to my fans for my conduct, including swearing on LIVE TV, at the Headies event hours ago,” he wrote.

“I recognize that you all are the most important part of my work and my journey so far, and I would not have come this far without you.”

His apology expresses how much he values his fans and intends to remain in their good

Naira Marley – Marlians

Marlians Naira Marley’s fan base, Marlians is another army of fans in Nigeria.

Although many of this particular fanbase is not on social media as they belonged to the street, there are ‘Marlians’ on social media that could compete with citizens of Mali called Malians.

These people follow the lifestyle of the controversial music as well as spreading his gospel. ‘NM’ as he’s fondly called has over 4 million followers on Instagram.

Burna Boy – Outsiders

Incase you didn’t know, Burna Boy’s fans are called Outsiders,  He is one of the biggest and most successful African artists.

He rose to prominence in 2012 after releasing “Like to Party”, the lead single from his debut studio album L.I.F.E (2013).

In 2017, Burna Boy signed with Bad Habit/Atlantic Records in the United States and Warner Music Group internationally. His third studio album Outside marked his major-label debut

Laycon – Icons

Icons are one of the fastest-growing fan bases in Nigeria which has Big Brother Naija Season 5 winner, Laycon, in the spotlight.

The followers and fans of the music artiste/reality TV star came to be after his exploit in the BBN show.

His fans’ base with the symbol; ‘love and light’ has increased both online and offline since then.

Laycon has 2.6 million followers on Instagram and over 700k followers on Twitter.

Rema – Ravers

Divine ikubor popularly known by his stage name Rema has finally decided on the name to give to his fans.

Rema is currently signed to Mavin/Jozzin Records, a record label owned by Don Jazzy and Jozzin which is currently operated by Don’t Jazzy younger brother and mavin signee D’prince.

He is an amazingly talented singer, songwriter, and Rapper, he hails from Edo state and he was discovered by D’prince on Instagram over a freestyle cover he did on Don Jazzy and D’Prince Song.

Tiwa Savage – Savage Soldier

A fan recently took to social media displaying a tattoo of Tiwa Savage on her chest which drew her attention.

Reacting, Tiwa via her Instagram handle wrote: “Yo you burst my brain with this permanent love oh.

“I cannot get all the names of those that tattooed my name so I will just get a Savage soldier tattoo. I’m actually obsessed with my fans.”

Tems – Rebel Gang

Tems. If you’ve never heard this name before, you’re probably living under a rock. It’s not an exaggeration, it’s a statement of fact.

Adedamola Adefolahan better identified by his stage name Fireboy DML is one of Nigeria’s fast-growing Afrobeat artists.

Born in the year, February 5, 1996, the singer is one of YBNL’s music prodigy.

His breakthrough single “Jealous” first appeared on YBNL Nation’s collaborative album YBNL Mafia Family (2018), before being re-released on 25 March 2019.

Since then, it’s been from hits to hits.

Tiwa Savage:

Tiwatope Savage professionally known as Tiwa Savage is one of Nigeria’s leading female songstresses.

Born on February 5, 1980, she is a former signee under the famous Mavin Records owned by Don Jazzy.

Her debut studio album Once Upon a Time was released on the 3rd of July 2013, and it was supported by seven hot singles that brought her to the limelight.

Arguably, all the songs were hits, but “Kele Kele Love” could not be ruled out as the banger of the year.

However, the album put her up for the album of the year in 2014.

Korede Bello:

Another Mavin Records music star was born in the beautiful month of February.

Born to the family of the Bellos, Korede Bello was delivered to planet earth on the 29th of February, 1996.

A unique date that depicts his uniqueness in the industry, because on days of leap year is when he has his birthday to himself.

He signed a record deal with Mavin Records in 2014, that changed his music career forever.

Bello is best known for his hit single “Godwin”.

Samm Henshaw:

Iniabasi Samuel Henshaw, professionally known as Samm Henshaw is a British singer, songwriter, and record producer.

Signed to Columbia Records, the young rising artist has released a couple of hit tracks and Eps.

Sikiru Ayinde Barrister (Late):

Late fuji legend Sikiru Ayinde Barrister would have clocked 73 this year.

He was born on February 9th, 1948.

Since his youthful days, Barrister has been performing on Ramadan ceremonies and different Muslim occasions.

Also, he has released a whole lot of records and albums to his name.

However, he passed away on December 16, 2010.

Though, late but not forgotten, and that puts him on our list of Nigerian artists born in the month of February.

A Debut song is a song that Officially introduces an artist to Music lovers. Though some Artistes may have been doing songs before joining a label, immediately they are signed to a label, their first song under the label may be considered a debut song.

For this list we would be picking top 10 debut songs from 2010 to date. In no particular order,

DUMEBI- REMA

Rema released Dumebi in March 2019 after getting signed to Jonzing Record, a subsidiary of mavin records.

The song which caused fans of Wizkid to compare him with Rema due to them sounding alike was a success something Mavin Records didn’t even expect.

Rema later released a remix EP for the song which features Becky G, Major Lazer, Matoma, Jarreau Vandal, Jayceeoh, and Henry Fong.

JEALOUS- FIREBOY

Jealous was released at first as part of  YBNL Nation’s collaborative album YBNL Mafia Family (2018), before being re-released on 25 March 2019.

Fireboy DML entrance into the YBNL family came after the departure of Adekunle Gold from the label and not only did he manage to fill in the void Adekunle left but also cement his stand in the label.

SADE- ADEKUNLE GOLD

“Sade” was a highlife cover of One Direction‘s “Story of my Life” that shot Adekunle Gold to fame and was able to get into YBNL. The song was released in 2014.

ELEKO- MAYORKUN

Mayorkun released his first single under the DMW label after signing into the label called “Eleko” in 2016. The video of the song gathered a million views in the first 10 days.

 KELE KELE LOVE- TIWA SAVAGE

Tiwa savage released Kele Kele Love as the lead single from her debut album, “Once Upon a Time” in 2010. This song introduced the London returnee to the Nigerian Music scene.

LIKE TO PARTY- BURNA BOY

Like to party was Burna Boy‘s lead single from his debut album, “L.I.F.E” and was released in 2012.

WOJU- KIZZ DANIEL

When Kizz Daniel released “Woju” in 2014, he clinched a spot as Nigerian sweetheart with the heartwarming melody. He later released a remix that featured Tiwa Savage and Davido in 2015.

BACK WHEN- DAVIDO FT NAETO C

The Naeto C-assisted track “Back When” was released on May 7, 2011, as Davido’s debut album “Omo Baba Olowo” lead single. Davido produced the song himself.

HOLLA AT YOUR BOY- WIZKID

When “Holla At Your Boy” dropped, it took over the Music scene. The award-winning song was released in 2010, as the lead single from his debut studio album Superstar (2011). The song was produced by DJ Klem (Knighthouse) and Vebee.

What about consistency? There’s no Nigerian artist that has been that consistent, in that number of years. Album, every year, OLIC every year, hits every time, collabos, signing youngings (help me greet Picazo Rhap), he’s done, yeah, his best.

Know what’s funny? That’s not even his best. He’s the best, yet, his best is yet to come. No one can be like Olamide. As long as he continues making music, he’ll remain on the throne.

Well, here are Facts You Don’t Know about Baddo. And, if you already know, (in Kendrick Lamar’s voice) sit down, be humble!

• JUST 29 YEARS

Wait, yeah, he ain’t even 30 yet. He’s almost the same age as many of these young guys, in the industry. But he’s achieved way beyond imaginations, for his age.

He has a son already. And his career,that has been booming since he was 20, is still booming yet. The man no wan rest sef.

• EIGHT STUDIO ALBUMS

You heard that? Eight albums, in less than eight years! For reference, Wizkid has only three (of which one was called an EP), while Davido hasn’t given us his second album (he has an EP, too). But Olamide’s got 8!

After putting out “Rapsodi” in 2011, he’s gone on to drop one album, every year. Including “YBNL,” “Baddest Guy Ever Liveth,” “Street OT,” “Eyan Mayweather,” “The Glory” and “Lagos NaWa.” He also did a joint album with Phyno called “2 Kings.”

We’re expecting an album, in December – YBNL MAFIA FAMILY.

• LOST THE HEADIES NEXT RATED TWICE

Another reason Lil Kesh’s loss at the 2015 Headies had hit Olamide that hard, was that, he actually had another chance.

In 2011, Olamide also lost The Next Rated Award, to Wizkid. He couldn’t imagine his protége losing it again.

• STARTED YBNL WITH KIDA KUDZ

Unless you’re an old fan of rap in Nigeria, you probably haven’t heard any of Kida Kudz’s song. But then, you must have heard the name Kida Kudz. In that, the name is very catchy.

Kida Kudz, at a time was signed alongside Olamide to Coded Tunes. When Olamide left, he started the YBNL Gang, just a movement then. The founding members were Olamide, Kida Kudz and the duo, 2Kriss. They all left, tho.

And, today, YBNL is one of the Labels that has produced some of the finest artists. It’s a much bigger movement, and actually a registered Recording Company.

• ALMOST SIGNED TO DB RECORDS

One of the opportunities D’banj lost, was signing Olamide, back then. The deal reportedly fell out, due to management issues.

In 2013, Olamide was solo, and D’banj took interest in him. They started going out together, and Olamide adopted the nickname Baddo Lee.

That, though, was a missed game. It never worked out. Did you know this before? No? Good. Now you know.

• NEVER MET DAGRIN

When Dagrin died, everyone knew it was a big loss to the industry. hen from nowhere, Olamide broke out. I know guys who actually said he’s a replacement to the late Dagrin.

But, with all the juxtaposition, and seeming resemblance, no one would believe Olamide never met Dagrin. He however, gained influence from one of Yoruba rap pioneers, Lord of Ajasa, who recorded with ID Cabasa, then. Cabasa was the boss of Coded Tunes, Olamide’s first Label.

• DJ ENIMONEY

For those who don’t know, DJ Enimoney, is Olamide’s brother, and he’s currently the in-house Disc Jockey for YBNL.

He’s known for his 2016 “Oya Dab” single, which featured Olamide. And, “Diet,” released this year, which had Reminisce, Slimcase and Tiwa Savage.
