The countdown to the 2025 edition of the All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA) has officially begun, with this year’s competition tipped to be one of the fiercest in the history of the continental showcase.

On Wednesday, August 27, the International Committee of AFRIMA, in partnership with the African Union Commission, released the nominees’ list, spotlighting African music heavyweights and rising stars across the continent.

Global Afrobeats icons Davido and Burna Boy will face off against Congolese legend Fally Ipupa, Moroccan hitmaker El Grande Toto, South African DJ Maphorisa, and Egyptian superstar Amr Diab. They will also compete with a fresh wave of emerging acts including Shallipopi, Himra, Moliy, Ayra Starr, Tanzanian crooner Juma Jux, and Senegal’s Mia Guissé.

Organizers revealed that AFRIMA 2025 received a record-breaking 10,717 submissions, the highest in its 12-year history. After 10 days of rigorous screening, a 13-member jury trimmed the entries down to 343 nominees spread across 40 categories, representing Africa’s regions and its diaspora.

Speaking on the unveiling, AFRIMA jury member Delani Makhalima hailed the growth of African music: “For years our voices were not heard, but today African music is global. This is AFRIMA, the biggest music entity on the continent.”

The 2025 awards ceremony is scheduled to hold in Lagos from November 25 to 30. The week-long programme will feature signature events such as the AFRIMA Music Village, the Africa Music Business Summit, the Nominees Party, and will climax with the grand finale on November 30.

The prestigious awards night will be broadcast live to audiences in more than 84 countries.

She emphasized that the music landscape is now saturated with a multitude of platforms, and getting a song noticed has become a formidable task due to the sheer volume of music available.

In this environment, she pointed out that while marketing and promotion can be financially demanding, they are essential for a song’s success in today’s music industry. Her observations highlight the need for artists and their teams to navigate this evolving landscape, adapt to new promotional strategies, and make strategic investments to gain prominence in a crowded field.

“A lot of musicians are in the system now and within a week there are over 200 newly released songs, the space is choked, and gaining attention to the music is shared due to the number of songs on the airwaves. so your money will determine how your song reaches its peak and not forgetting a special grace”

Since she was born and raised in Germany, Wendy initially had little contact with religion. She did, however, have a number of spiritual attacks after moving to Ghana, which she recognized as a widespread phenomenon. Wendy also realized that music had a spiritual quality to it.

Wendy realized that there must be something outside of her that draws people to her performances. She was curious as to the causes of her success and the strong connection she had with her audience.

She thinks that the spiritual energy in her music connects with listeners and contributes to her success as an artist.

Wendy discussed how these encounters have significantly influenced her artistic and psychological development.

Despite having always known she wanted to pursue music, the difficulties she encountered helped her find her true calling and lead a life that is more driven by purpose.

She now seeks to live consciously and tackles her job with mindfulness, embracing her identity as a purpose-driven artist.

Following a spectacular premiere in Ghana at the Airport View Hotel in Accra, the nominees for the Ghana Music Awards Europe 2023 have been announced.

The launch saw performances from veteran Gospel Artist Joyce Blessing, legendary Akousa Agyapong, and more.

Ghana’s music research hub, Remedi Entertainment, released the 2023’s Ghana Music Awards Europe nominees. All works nominated fall under the calendar year from January 1, 2022, to December 31, 2022.

The date for the awards will be announced shortly after a change in date, CEO Osaah Special said on Hitz103.9FM’s This Is Gospel.

The awards presentation was originally scheduled for May 6, 2023, however, a new date will soon be released.

Wendy Shay, the female musician in Ghana with the most streams in 2022, has achieved yet another triumph with the 2023 Shay edition of the “Shay Concert.”

On Saturday, January 7, 2023, thousands of music lovers and supporters of  Shay arrived for a blissful night at the West Hills Mall forecourt for the third instalment of the concert, which was powered by Ruff Town Records and sponsored by Ebony Condoms.

Through her charity and Rufftown Records,  Shay planned a free health test and a vaccination session at the same location before the event, which got underway at about 7 o’clock. When the show finally started, the award-winning singer-songwriter wowed the audience with an hour of nonstop, energising performance while dishing out timeless tunes from her catalogue.

She periodically took a break to speak with her fans and proclaim her status as the best female musician in Ghana right now, a title she has undoubtedly earned. In addition to Wendy Shay, who was the main performer that evening, she was backed by some of Ghana’s best musicians as well as her colleagues’ entertainers.

Numerous artists, including Fameye, Sister Afia, Eno Barony, Amerado, Ras Kuuku, Kwame Yogot, Larruso, Bosom Pyung, Kwaku Darlington, Darkovibes, Malcolm Nuna, and others, attended the event in style and gave the fans an unforgettable experience. Every square inch of the forecourt was taken with music lovers, creating memories.

The massive crowd stretched as far as the streets, causing a massive traffic jam on the Accra – Kasoa highway. One would estimate over 20,000 people were in attendance. The first edition of the ‘Shay Concert’ took place in 2018, with a second edition in 2019.

Ghanaian Afropop and Afrobeats singer Wendy Asiamah Addo, known by the stage name Wendy Shay, has promised to extend a helping hand to the less privileged in Ghana.

She stated that she has always wanted to use the money she earns from her music career to construct a hospital and an orphanage house.

According to Wendy Shay who is a nurse by profession but later trained as a midwife until she pursued her music career, said she is making a lot of money from music and her dream to do bigger things pushes her to do more.

In an interview on Accra-based 3FM, she said “There is so much money in music…Because of the money I am making now just even from my streams alone, I couldn’t have made it.”

“And I want to do big things…The things I want to do in my life, build a hospital, orphanages one day, in order for me to do it, I have to do music,” she added.

Wendy Shay began the music industry during a difficult time, and over the years, her tenacity and resiliency have shown themselves in the relatable hit songs she has performed.
