The countdown to the 2025 edition of the All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA) has officially begun, with this year’s competition tipped to be one of the fiercest in the history of the continental showcase.

On Wednesday, August 27, the International Committee of AFRIMA, in partnership with the African Union Commission, released the nominees’ list, spotlighting African music heavyweights and rising stars across the continent.

Global Afrobeats icons Davido and Burna Boy will face off against Congolese legend Fally Ipupa, Moroccan hitmaker El Grande Toto, South African DJ Maphorisa, and Egyptian superstar Amr Diab. They will also compete with a fresh wave of emerging acts including Shallipopi, Himra, Moliy, Ayra Starr, Tanzanian crooner Juma Jux, and Senegal’s Mia Guissé.

Organizers revealed that AFRIMA 2025 received a record-breaking 10,717 submissions, the highest in its 12-year history. After 10 days of rigorous screening, a 13-member jury trimmed the entries down to 343 nominees spread across 40 categories, representing Africa’s regions and its diaspora.

Speaking on the unveiling, AFRIMA jury member Delani Makhalima hailed the growth of African music: “For years our voices were not heard, but today African music is global. This is AFRIMA, the biggest music entity on the continent.”

The 2025 awards ceremony is scheduled to hold in Lagos from November 25 to 30. The week-long programme will feature signature events such as the AFRIMA Music Village, the Africa Music Business Summit, the Nominees Party, and will climax with the grand finale on November 30.

The prestigious awards night will be broadcast live to audiences in more than 84 countries.

Afrobeat artist Wendy Shay has offered her insights into the key factors contributing to the success of songs in today’s music industry. She emphasized that hit songs are not just about their intrinsic quality but are heavily reliant on effective marketing and financial investment.

During a discussion on UTV’s Showbiz Night, Wendy Shay expressed her belief that in the contemporary music landscape, the success of songs is determined by strategic marketing, financial investment, and the utilization of various platforms to gain attention and popularity.

She stressed that in today’s music industry, it’s the combined efforts of marketing and promotion, along with the financial resources allocated, that dictate whether a song becomes a hit.

According to her, the traditional approach of relying solely on conventional media marketing and promotion has become less effective in the current music landscape. Wendy Shay’s perspective sheds light on the evolving dynamics of the music industry, where artists and their teams must navigate a complex landscape to achieve success.

“The new era of chalking a hit song has become capital intensive unlike the days when conventional media promotional does the job but now times have changed and the music space is choked with different platforms available”

Wendy Shay’s insights underscore the modern challenges artists face in achieving hit songs in the digital age. With the music industry’s high level of competitiveness and the continuous release of new songs, it has become increasingly difficult for a song to distinguish itself.

She emphasized that the music landscape is now saturated with a multitude of platforms, and getting a song noticed has become a formidable task due to the sheer volume of music available.

In this environment, she pointed out that while marketing and promotion can be financially demanding, they are essential for a song’s success in today’s music industry. Her observations highlight the need for artists and their teams to navigate this evolving landscape, adapt to new promotional strategies, and make strategic investments to gain prominence in a crowded field.

“A lot of musicians are in the system now and within a week there are over 200 newly released songs, the space is choked, and gaining attention to the music is shared due to the number of songs on the airwaves. so your money will determine how your song reaches its peak and not forgetting a special grace”

“Every available music platform now is capital intensive, even the new digital spaces like Tiktok, Playlisting, et al and even those who push the song however gaining back your investment is likely possible depending on your intensive marketing”

Ghanaian singer-songwriter, Wendy Shay has made it quite obvious that she is committed to her music career, making it abundantly clear that she has no plans to relinquish it in the face of marriage.

This stands in contrast to some female artists who have chosen to step away from the industry after tying the knot.

Emphasizing her unwavering dedication, Wendy Shay stressed that she would not forsake her music career for any reason linked to marriage.

During an online discussion on Joy FM’s Twitter Spaces, she underscored that any prospective suitor interested in marrying her must align with her musical aspirations, as music is the cornerstone of her relevance in the world.

“I am not even thinking about marriage, because you know music is my destiny and that is what makes me relevant in this life and so I don’t think that I will trade something like that for marriage,”

“You should be in alignment with my destiny. If it’s just lovey-dovey and you just loving me and taking care of me, I don’t think that is enough for me to give you attention,” she added

She articulated that mere affection and providing for her would not suffice to win her affection. In her view, any man desiring a place in her life must also wholeheartedly back her music career, essentially integrating both facets of her existence.

During further conversations, she expounded on her recent song, ‘Every Man Cheats,’ revealing that it serves as a message of empowerment and encouragement to women. The song’s core message is to encourage women to stand firm and cease making sacrifices for men who ultimately betray their trust by cheating.

“The song is to make a statement that men are prone to cheat and no matter a woman’s status, beauty, or influence, men will still cheat so it’s about time women came to the realization and understand that keeping a man goes beyond big boobs and big buttocks.

I’ve seen many women lose their lives because they went under the knife thinking that would save their marriages or relationships and I think women should rather build their inner qualities rather than focus too much on their physical,”

She pushed for women to focus on developing their inner traits, which would eventually make them attractive and self-sufficient, rather than dependant on a man’s validation.

Ghanaian singer-songwriter, Wendy Shay has spoken out against the objectification of women in the music industry, calling it unfair treatment, and stated her thoughts about it.

In a recent interview on Berla Mundi’s Day Show on TV3, the self-proclaimed dancehall queen expressed her displeasure with the labelling of female musicians as ‘female artistes,’ while their male counterparts are simply referred to as ‘artistes.’

Wendy Shay strongly pushed for equal treatment, claiming that women in the music industry put in just as much, if not more, effort as men do and should be treated equally as musicians.

“It is not fair. First of all, I don’t even like the fact that people go like ‘female artistes’ because you don’t see our male counterparts being labeled as ‘male artistes’. They are seen as artistes so we should be seen as such. We are artistes,” she suggested.

She emphasized the dedication and efforts of female musicians like Sister Efya and herself, saying that they put in a lot of effort and sweat and deserve to be recognized for their work.

“Putting that aside, I think it’s not fair because there are so many women who are really working hard; like me, Wendy Shay. We have artistes like Sister Efya working hard. It’s about time Ghanaians or this part of our world acknowledge the hard work, effort and sweat we put in,” she mentioned.

Wendy Shay addressed the difficulties women still face in this region of the world in achieving leadership positions and acknowledged that there is still a cultural mentality that equates women with mostly domestic responsibilities.

She did, however, express optimism that with time and development, society will advance to accept and value the contributions of women in leadership roles across a variety of industries, including music.

Ghanaian Afropop and Afrobeats singer Wendy Shay, known by her stage name, has addressed the constant comparisons between her and fellow artist Gyakie.

She emphasized the unfairness of drawing such comparisons and urged music enthusiasts to appreciate and celebrate each artist’s unique style and sound.

In recent discussions among music lovers and critics in Ghana, there has been debate over the similarities between Wendy Shay and Gyakie, with some suggesting that Gyakie has achieved greater international success.

Wendy Shay made it clear that these comparisons are futile because each artist has their distinct musical preferences and approaches to their craft.

She pointed out that she has consistently delivered hit songs for five years, establishing herself as an international artist in her own right.

“It’s not fair to even compare. You know, I have been doing and giving hit back-to-back for five years so there shouldn’t be any comparison. I am an international artiste as well, and I am working towards becoming a global artiste. The race is not for the swift; once you’re working hard and working on yourself, you are going to get wherever you put your mind to.”

She stressed the importance of hard work and determination in achieving success in the music industry, reaffirming her commitment to becoming an internationally recognized artist.

The “Survivor” hitmaker underscored the significance of allowing each artist to shine and be acknowledged for their talents. She pointed out that comparisons can be discouraging for artists and hinder their creative growth.

Ghanaian songstress Wendy Shay has revealed that when she first arrived in Ghana, she experienced spiritual attacks.

Wendy discussed her struggles and the enduring impact of music during a segment on “The Day Show” with Bella Mundi.

Since she was born and raised in Germany, Wendy initially had little contact with religion. She did, however, have a number of spiritual attacks after moving to Ghana, which she recognized as a widespread phenomenon. Wendy also realized that music had a spiritual quality to it.

“Growing up in Germany, you don’t really see spirituality like that but when I came to Ghana, obviously, I faced a lot of spiritual battles,” she disclosed.

Wendy realized that there must be something outside of her that draws people to her performances. She was curious as to the causes of her success and the strong connection she had with her audience.

She thinks that the spiritual energy in her music connects with listeners and contributes to her success as an artist.

She further added that “It’s normal everywhere. Music itself is a spirit. What is so special about me that people will like to come and watch me perform. There should be something that is beyond me that is actually making that happen.”

Wendy discussed how these encounters have significantly influenced her artistic and psychological development.

Despite having always known she wanted to pursue music, the difficulties she encountered helped her find her true calling and lead a life that is more driven by purpose.

She now seeks to live consciously and tackles her job with mindfulness, embracing her identity as a purpose-driven artist.

Wendy Shay, the female musician in Ghana with the most streams in 2022, has achieved yet another triumph with the 2023 Shay edition of the “Shay Concert.”

On Saturday, January 7, 2023, thousands of music lovers and supporters of Shay arrived for a blissful night at the West Hills Mall forecourt for the third instalment of the concert, which was powered by Ruff Town Records and sponsored by Ebony Condoms.

Wendy draws a large audience for her third Shay concert.

Through her charity and Rufftown Records, Shay planned a free health test and a vaccination session at the same location before the event, which got underway at about 7 o’clock. When the show finally started, the award-winning singer-songwriter wowed the audience with an hour of nonstop, energising performance while dishing out timeless tunes from her catalogue.

She periodically took a break to speak with her fans and proclaim her status as the best female musician in Ghana right now, a title she has undoubtedly earned. In addition to Wendy Shay, who was the main performer that evening, she was backed by some of Ghana’s best musicians as well as her colleagues’ entertainers.

The massive crowd stretched as far as the streets, causing a massive traffic jam on the Accra – Kasoa highway. One would estimate over 20,000 people were in attendance. The first edition of the ‘Shay Concert’ took place in 2018, with a second edition in 2019.
