Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford has set an ambitious goal for himself, aiming to score 40 goals across all competitions this season in his pursuit of surpassing Wayne Rooney’s all-time goalscoring record for the club.

Rooney currently holds the top spot on Manchester United’s all-time scoring charts with 253 goals in 559 games. Rashford, at 25 years old, has already notched 123 goals in 359 games for the club. To catch up to Rooney, he will need to maintain a prolific scoring rate.

Coming off his best-ever goalscoring season with 30 goals, Rashford is eager to break records and has even discussed his aspirations with Rooney himself.

“Hopefully I will [break Rooney’s record],” Rashford told Gary Neville on The Overlap. “You never know what’s going to happen, but I’m all about scoring goals and trying to make assists. There’s a chance that it can happen. I’ve spoken to Wazza about it – he wants me to do it. He said it would be good for me to do it as I’ve grown up at the club. Hopefully, I get the opportunity to try to make it happen.”

Rashford is also aiming to become the first United player since Cristiano Ronaldo to score 40 goals in a single season and recognizes the need to enhance his scoring rate to catch up to Rooney.

“Before last season, I always aimed for 20 goals – a good benchmark for a winger,” he explained. “But this season, I’ve [a desire to] hit 30 – we have to try to push it now. If I can keep that side of it under [control], I feel like I can go on and get 35 or 40.”

In terms of goals scored for Manchester United, Rashford currently ranks 18th and needs 22 more goals to catch Cristiano Ronaldo, who sits in 14th place. Hitting the 40-goal mark would put Rashford on par with Mark Hughes for tenth place in the club’s all-time scoring list.

Kane worked behind the scenes to create a special keepsake for his teammates who assisted him in surpassing Wayne Rooney’s record of 53 goals after he broke it against Italy in March. ‘Harry Kane Record Breaker‘ vinyl record replicas were given to every one of the players and manager Gareth Southgate. The 56 goals Kane scored for England are all included in the disc’s “track listing.”

England’s record marksman took to Twitter to pay tribute to those who had helped him to the landmark, writing: “I couldn’t have broken the England all-time goalscoring record without the support of my team-mates and managers who have helped me along the way. This gift is a massive thank you from me to all those who I’ve shared a changing room with since my debut. Thank you.”

Kane, who is 29 years old and in good health, still has a long way to go before his record becomes one that will endure for a long time.

There have been claims that Ronaldo’s antics during a second stint in England have damaged his reputation in the eyes of Manchester United supporters, but Rooney is certain that his old teammate is still respected there.

He added: “No, I think what he’s done for Manchester United is great. And he’s won Premier League titles, won the Champions League, scored many goals. So I think certainly for the fans and certainly for the players, his former team-mates who played with him from my time especially, we’ll never forget what he did for Manchester United. Because in my eyes, he’ll always be a club legend and it’s a shame the way it ended of course this time round. But I don’t think that takes anything away from his legacy at the club.”

Ronaldo scored 118 goals for United during his first season there, helping the team win three Premier League titles and the Champions League. When he returned to Old Trafford from Juventus in 2021, he scored on 27 occasions while making 54 appearances.

Harry Kane has received praise from Wayne Rooney after moving up to the top spot in England’s all-time men’s goalscoring rankings.

Before to Thursday’s 2-1 victory over Italy, the two were equal on goals scored with 53 each, but Kane’s penalty kick in the first half gave England the victory.

Rooney sent a brief message to Kane on social media after the game to congratulate him on his record but has now offered a lengthier tribute to the 29-year-old.

“When I broke the England goalscoring record, with a penalty against Switzerland in September 2015, Harry Kane was the first player to run over and celebrate with me. I later mentioned Harry in the speech I made in the dressing room,” Rooney wrote in The Times.

“I said that I hoped the young players in the squad would come close to the record themselves, and even be able to surpass me. Harry had scored only three England goals at that point — but I said those words because I knew he could do it. Even then, with only four caps under his belt, I knew he could become England’s greatest scorer if he kept going the way he was and I wanted to give him encouragement.

“I am delighted for him, for his family, and for the England team now he has done it, having scored his 54th England goal against Italy on Thursday night. Knowing Harry, it’s not something that will go to his head. He will kick on and, in fact, I believe that when he stops playing he will leave the England record in a place where it will be very difficult for someone else to break it.

“Where does he stand among England strikers? He is probably the best. I think he is,” Rooney proclaimed. “I was not an out-and-out No 9, more a player who was halfway between a No 9 and a No 10, and if you look at the great England strikers — Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer, Jimmy Greaves, Michael Owen — Harry is as good a scorer as any of them and just as relentless, but unlike them he is not only a finisher.

“His all-round football qualities make him the best, and that is not just what he does in an England shirt, but at club level. He will break Shearer’s Premier League goals record if he stays fit.

“How do I feel now I’m no longer the record holder? Absolutely fine. I’m not really bothered about records and think it is crazy that, before I broke it, the England scoring record stood for so long, given all the talented forwards England had. I knew this day would come and that Harry would be the one.”

The 2-1 victory over Italy on Thursday saw the Tottenham striker surpass Wayne Rooney in the Three Lions’ scoring statistics by netting his 54th goal for the team from the penalty spot.

It was always a matter of time for Kane to break the record, and after the game, he revealed just how much it meant to him.

 “It means everything,” he told Channel 4. “I was so excited to put the England shirt on and get back out here and get the campaign started for next year’s Euros.

“It had to be a penalty and once it hit the back of the net… huge emotion. A magical moment.”

During Tuesday’s match between Manchester City and RB Leipzig, Erling Haaland became the youngest player in competition history to score his 30th Champions League goal.

Former Real Madrid and Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy previously held the record, scoring 30 goals in his first 34 games.

Haaland, who reached 30 in only 25 matches, utterly destroyed that fast.

Haaland broke the record of more than one United great, including Van Nistelrooy. Wayne Rooney scored his final goal in the 84th of his 85 appearances in the competition, giving him a career total of 30 goals. Haaland now has the same number of goals as Rooney.

At 22 years, 236 days, Haaland takes the title from career rival Kylian Mbappe, who reached 30 at 22 years, 352 days.

Haaland will now be aiming for the record for 40 Champions League goals.

Van Nistelrooy holds the record for being the fastest player to reach that tally, doing so in 45 games, 14 fewer than Mbappe, who bagged his 40th in his 59th outing.

Mbappe remains the youngest player to hit 40, doing so at 23 years, 317 days.
