Olamide is one of the greatest music brands in the industry, having catapulted a slew of artists to prominence through his record label, YBNL.

Over the years, the YBNL chairman has signed various young artists to his record label. While some of them went on to achieve even greater success after leaving his record label, others are still having difficulty breaking into Nigeria’s fiercely competitive music scene.

However, several of the former YBNL artists have occasionally criticised their former record label head on social media, accusing him of lacking the managerial abilities to support their musical success (or “blow,” in Nigerian terms).

Xino

Xino is unquestionably the most disappointing YBNL signing. The Plateau State-born musician, who was signed virtually at the same time as Chinko Ekun, recorded two singles on the label, “TTYL” and “Nakam,” before departing under contentious circumstances in 2016.

Upon his exit from the label, the singer gave an exclusive interview to Showtime where he took swipes at Olamide, “YBNL management and other labels in Nigeria need to adopt an entrepreneurial system that focuses on artiste development because there is zero fan base in Nigeria.

“Beyonce’s husband, Jayz, is an undisputed boss because he understands this concept and creates acts that last to create others too.

I’m engaging in other money-making options, music is just an option and one that I love very much; I never asked to be signed on to YBNL, so I’m not bothered as much. But for the sake of those who dig my songs I’m coming with something soon, something cooking with Kiddominant is dropping soon.”

Nonetheless, he attempted some conciliation in 2017 by attempting to mend fences with the label and Olamide.

He wrote on his Instagram page that, “Mood, feeling like Baddo right now, I want to take this time out to apologize, first to @baddosneh for the rash things I said last year.

“I was bitter over how things took a turn, I guess I owe all of you an apology and I humbly ask that you guys overlook what I said and see me for who I really am, a happy, fun-loving and jonzing pretty boy. I also apologize to the whole YBNL team and take responsibility for my words.

I love @baddosneh as a big bro and how creative he has inspired me to want to be better. I guess I was really missing the crew; I love you guys. Thanks for not judging me and taking time out to read this. I want to get accolades and shit, but I want to get it with the people who were there for me.”

Davolee

Davolee was signed by Olamide in November 2016. This occurred following the exodus of Chinko Ekun, Lil Kesh, Viktoh, and Adekunle Gold. The label required some new blood, which it gladly received.

During the time he was assumed to be on the label, he released two truly impressive songs, 2017’s B-Banks-produced ‘Festival Bar‘ and 2018’s ‘Cirocing.’ His talent was always obvious, but it was never really supported by any hits.

Following the label’s signing of Picazo Rhap, Fireboy DML, and Yomi Blaize, signs of a split became clear.

He claimed he never had a contract with YBNL in a November 2018 interview with Naijaloaded TV.

However, Davolee let loose in February 2021 after writing on his Twitter page that “Olamide is mad.”

This occurred as a result of a tweet from MTV Base West about a programme called #YBNLRaised songs to recognise Olamide’s contribution to the music industry. The addition of “Festival Bar,” a song by Davolee, to the playlist, upset the singer.

Later, he tweeted MTV Base to express his displeasure with having his name appear beside anything relating to Olamide. An Olamide fan tried to interfere and got dragged by Davolee, alongside the YBNL boss as he said they are both mad.

Lyta

Olamide discovered Lyta while he was out on the streets. During his time with the label, he dropped the hit singles “Self Made” and “Time,” both of which featured Olamide, on September 19, 2018. He arrived at YBNL a little before Picazo, Yomi Blaize, and Fireboy DML.

However, following rumours that he was leaving YBNL earlier in the year, he finally appeared on Naijaloaded TV to announce the end of his mixed association with YBNL. He stated during the interview that despite receiving between 50,000 and 80,000 Nairas for performances, the label never provided him with a written contract.

He said, “I don’t have any deal with YBNL or Olamide. Olamide saw me on the street and helped me, I don’t have any written contract with him… YBNL and Olamide with always be part of my story. God bless Olamide, thank you for everything. No love lost.

“Yes, I was getting benefits. The used to pay me for shows. Sometimes 80k, 60k to 50k. But when I dropped my songs, ‘Temi’ and ‘Selfmade,’ I didn’t get anything.”

Olamide also responded and claimed that YBNL has a promotion calendar that Lyta was unwilling to follow. When other artists started getting their shine, the rapper claimed Lyta became unhappy. So, to avoid “bad energy” Olamide claims he unfollowed Lyta on Instagram.

Temmie Ovwasa

Temmie Ovwasa, also known as YBNL Princess, is a singer and songwriter from Nigeria. In August 2015, she signed to a record deal with the Olamide-owned record label. She left YBNL in 2020 due to a disagreement with Olamide.

Temmie recently accused Olamide of placing her in a box while she was still signed to YBNL on social media. Temmie claims that Olamide transported her from Ilorin to Lagos at the age of 18, gave her a platform, and then rejected every event and offer she received.

Additionally, she disclosed that the YBNL leader confined her in his home and forbade her from releasing music.

The controversial singer was actually replying to a fan who asked if she was still in touch with Olamide.

Fada Fada – Phyno ft. Olamide

Fada Fada, which was released in 2016, is one of Nigeria’s finest street anthem collaborations.

Fada Fada was a hit for many obvious reasons, with an Igbo and Yoruba rapper delivering bars in two separate Nigerian languages, appealing lyrics, and an up-tempo music.

Penalty – Small Doctor

Small Doctor’s funky hit single Penalty, released in 2016, is about making money and spending it excessively. Penalty won The Headies for “Best Street Hop” in 2018 with the catchphrase “if you no get money, hide your face.”

Able God – Chinko Ekun Ft. Lil Kesh x Zlatan Ibile

Wetin We Gain – Victor AD

Victor AD released Wetin We Gain in 2018 after appearing on Erigga’s 2017 smash song Motivation. In the song, AD has a conversation with God, asking him to remember him and bless his labour.

Legbegbe – Mr Real

With its characteristic beat and accompanying dance step, Legbegbe is arguably one of the songs that influenced the Shaku Shaku sound.

Legbegbe, which means “side by side” in street slang meaning being pickpocketed, was released in 2018 and sparked a lot of debate, with some camps alleging it was inspired by Seun Egbegbe, a Nollywood actor accused of attempting to steal nine iPhones from Computer Village.

Tesojue – Reminisce

Tesojue, Reminisce’s 2014 hit, was an instant street favourite the moment it dropped. Despite criticism for its filthy lyrics, Tesojue became even more popular thanks to its catchy hook “wa fe ku laleyi” and steamy video.

Soapy- Naira Marley

Naira Marley released Soapy, his sixth song of the year, only days after being freed from prison in 2019.

The song drew a lot of criticism, with many people questioning the meaning of the lyrics and labelling it as “dirty.” Soapy was a slang term for jerking off, and it was followed by the soapy dance move, which sparked controversy and was labelled obscene.

Viktoh has joined the ranks of Nigerian musicians who own Mercedes Benz cars.

On Thursday, the former YBNL signee announced his acquisition of the whip costing millions of Naira on his Instagram page.

Viktoh posted a photo of himself standing with a black Mercedes-Benz SUV.

He captioned the post with lyrics of King Perryy’s song, ”Go German German”

He’s suffering from all he enjoyed while he was in YBNL. No doubt, Lil Kesh has a lazy and uncreative team who doesn’t have his love at heart.

Iyanya

Iyanya redefined the tempo of Nigerian music with the fast-paced smash hit, ‘Kukere’. However, behind the scene was a little-known producer at the time, D’Tunes.

After leaving the MMG in October 2016 and announcing on Instagram that he signed a record deal with Mavin Records including a management deal with Temple Management Company.

Harrysong

It is no longer news that Raggae Blues singer Harrysong has fallen out with his record label 5 Star Music over what many say was due to irreconcilable differences occasioned by lack of trust.

Reekado Banks

Reekado Banks is really getting it right lately. The super talented singer who won our heart under Mavin Records is getting back even when he ghosted for a while, his last EP contains some gems including his hit track ‘Ozumba Mbadiwe’.

He lacks promotion basically. He is a very good singer no doubt. I mean you can’t be a record label owner and a singer at the same time. You need lots of concentration on the Label, as well as focus on your output.

He owns Banks Music but that Don Jazzy factor is still missing in his career and I think that is what has really helped him grow over the years.

We can only pray for him to get back to his winning ways, is not easy.

Ice Prince

When Ice Prince left Chocolate City, it was almost like he left his fame back then in the label, things went horrible almost immediately.

Ice Prince used to get a lot of hype when he still belonged to the record label. Now he lacks promotion and good production.

He puts in the effort to make good music no doubt, but we all know how good music with great promotion ends.

With good plans laid down and good songs dropping his camp, our dear Panshak will definitely be bursting speakers again.

Skales

Skales lacks a strong record label for promotion. He releases his music anyhow now. Empire Mates Entertainment (EME) helped him structure his craft.

His output reached his target audience to the maximum then. But now, there’s no form of anticipation when it comes to Skales and his music.

Also, all his recent songs are below par unlike when he was still with EME. It seems his former label understands his pattern and they know how to make him do good songs too.

Joshua Iniyezo, an Afropop artiste better known as Solidstar, had parted ways with his record label, Achievas Entertainment in 2018 after a decade in the label.

Solidstar was known for churning out hit songs in the Nigerian music industry with enough buzz and was regarded as the top-listed act in the country.

Sugarboy

Umoren AKanimoh Felix (Oscar Jnr) Known as Sugarboy, is a Nigerian reggae-dancehall, Afrobeat singer, and songwriter.

I guess his lack of direction is why he is nowhere to be found.

If he can put himself together, get back to work with the right set of people around me, he will definitely win again as his talent is beyond just that of some random artiste.

Don Jazzy

Real Name Micheal Collins Ajereh, Don Jazzy is one of the popular Music executives in the Nigerian Music Industry. He became popular in 2004 alongside his former partner, D’Banj after the release of their track, “Tongolo“.

Mavin is one of Nigeria’s biggest record labels and powerhouses in the industry accounting for a sizable percent of the hit songs to come out every year.

Olamide

Olamide started out as a rapper signing under ID Cabasa’s “Coded Tune” under which he released his debut album, Rapsodi in 2011. However, the following year, he launched his own label, YBNL with the help of his long-time collaborator, Pheelz.

Following the success of GPAS, he established his second company, Dr. Dolor Entertainment (DDE) in 2016, which is a record label and music distribution organization.

It’s under this label, that popular female artist, Teni is signed to. On most of her songs, references to the name of the label is given.

The label also houses other upcoming acts like Hotkid, Afin Osha, Nikita, and Ryan Omo.

Currently, Dr Dolor has is now releasing songs of his own, like “I Go Pay”, “Prosperity”, “Wake Up” among others.

Audu Makori

Audu Makori is a Nigerian lawyer, entrepreneur, social activist, public speaker and creative industry expert. He is the co-founder and President of Chocolate City Entertainment.

He launched Chocolate City alongside Paul Okeugo and his brother Yahaya Maikori as directors of the company.

In January 2005, Chocolate City signed Jeremiah Gyang under a recording and management contract and re-released the album ‘Na Ba Ka‘. In mid-2006, M.I was signed up to Chocolate City.

Others like Jesse Jagz, Ice Prince, Ruby Gyang were signed to the label.

In 2015 Audu via Twitter announced his exit as CEO of Chocolate City Music and the appointment of M.I as the new CEO of Chocolate City Music, with label mate Ice Prince Zamani as the Vice President of the music label.

Maikori was made judge for the first season of Nigerian Idol alongside Yinka Davies and Jeffrey Daniel in 2010 and was seen as the Simon Cowell of the show.

E-Money

Emeka Okonkwo who is famously known as E-money is an entrepreneur, investor, business tycoon, and the chief executive officer (CEO) of Five Star Music.

He is into Oil and Gas also has a different chain of businesses home and abroad which includes a shipping company.

He is the younger brother of the Limpopo crooner, Kcee, and also the official sponsor of his music career as well as signing likes of Harrysong, Skiibii, Xbusta.

Apart from Kcee, Skiibii and Harrysong have left the label.

Wizkid

Ayo Balogun also known as Wizkid is not a Nigerian superstar but the owner and founder of Starboy ENtertainment. When Wizkid first came into the industry, he was signed to Banky W’s EME Records under which he released two albums, “Superstar” and “AYO”

After years of being with EME, Wizkid left the label and launched his Starboy Entertainment Label. In 2017, he signed to Sony Music and released his third album, “Sounds from the Other Side”.

In April 2013, Wizkid signed Maleek Berry and Legendury Beatz and later L.A.X to his imprint.

In 2016, Wizkid signed management deals with Efya, R2Bees, and Mr Eazi and in 2018, announced the signing of Terri to the label.

Phyno

Born Chibuzor Nelson Azubuike and known as Phyno, is a Nigerian rapper, singer, songwriter and record producer.

He started his music career as a producer in 2003 and is famous for rapping in the Igbo language. Under his Penthauze label, Phyno released his debut album, “No Guts No Glory“.

Penthauze in 2011 had Runtown, Shugaboi and Flipside on its bill. It signed Storm Rex in 2014, the singer becoming the label’s sole female act.

The label as a crew announced itself with the song ‘Camera Out’ (2011). Runtown, however, left the label in 2013. Currently, the label houses Afro trap rapper, Cheque who became popular in 2020 thanks to his hit song, “Zoom“.

Naira Marley

Azeez Adeshina Fashola known by his stage name as Naira Marley is a British-Nigerian singer and songwriter.

After launching to fame in 2017, then getting into trouble with EFCC over fraud-related charges and building a fanbase called Marlians, Naira Marley launched his label Marlian Music in 2019.

During the “Marlian Fest“, which was held at the Eko Hotels and Suites on 30 December 2019, Naira Marley announced the launch of his record label Marlian Records and unveiled CBlvck, Zinoleesky, MohBad and Fabian Blu as signed acts.

On 10 July 2020, Naira Marley took to his Instagram Page to unveil another act under his label, named: Emo Grae and later the same year unveiled two more acts, Lyta and Tori Keeche under the label.

Mohbad and Zinoleesky are currently the faces of the label with their chart-topping songs which has sealed their name in the streets.

In January 2014, the name Lil Kesh meant nothing to you and I. 18 months later in August 2015, he became one of the hottest acts out; a representative of the streets and the definition of a breakaway star.

Shoki attained levels that very few could have achieved at the entry point into the industry and it thrust the 21-year-old from Bariga onto the path of superstardom.

Shoki was great but he’s taken steps showing he understands his market and put out great follow-ups in Gbese and Efejoku that guarantee he’s definitely not on a one-hit-wonder. He’s also one hell of a performer.

Efejoku which literally means (you will dance till you get tired) has a reputation of living up to its title.

Lil Kesh made this beautiful street song with his former record label partner Victoh.

Each version of the song depicts the essence of dancing erotically till you get tired.

With Young John being the wicked producer that he is, not dancing to this song is clearly not impossible.

The song is a combination of both a master producer and two great singers.

Keshinro was born into a family of 5, the second of three kids, and attended a number of primary schools- a byproduct of his refusal to take school seriously.

Stockbridge College in his backyard, Bariga was the last school he attended before ending up at UNILAG.

He claims that music was always the dream and he learned from the sounds of Wande Coal, M.I, Tu Face, and many more picking up little things because no single artiste gave him all he wanted.

He started off freestyling at UNILAG before he was lucky enough to get into the studio and start recording.

One of his first recordings is the song that opened up the gates into the music industry for him, Lyrically.

It was the song that Viktoh, his friend at the time and current label mate played to the King of the West, Olamide, and led to Kesh getting his shot at music with the backing of the YBNL movement. We know the story from there.

Generally, parents aren’t forthcoming to the idea of their children going into music, however, with Kesh, they gave their blessings as it never stopped him from doing all that he needed to do which is evidenced by the fact that he is still studying linguistics at UNILAG despite the growth of his music career.

Without any hesitation, the Shoki song accompanied by a dance rose the singer to fame.

In addition, Shoki made everyone put a hand in front and another at the back with a twist to the left and right chanting Shoki Shoki!!

It was the nation’s anthem that year, with every street was literally filled with the vibe.

It’s a business so money is essential.” Kesh was a nominee for three awards at the Nigerian Entertainment Awards, the Best New Act, Song of the Year, and Collaboration of the year and it was interesting discovering his approach to award shows.

The Nigerian music industry is demanding but rewarding if you are signed to a good record label and these are Nigerian artistes that stop popping after they left their record labels.

Over the years, there have been numerous cases of fallouts between artists and their record labels which have left many artists struggling to come back to the spotlight.

Lil Kesh used to be a hot cake under YBNL a few years back.

Olamide and YBNL as a whole gave him just the right amount of push. Lil Kesh lacks good content, promotion, and awareness.

Most people don’t even get to know when his songs drop anymore. He’s making good music no doubt, but what is good music without the right amount of promotion.

He’s suffering from all he enjoyed while he was in YBNL. No doubt, Lil Kesh has a lazy and uncreative team who doesn’t have his love at heart.

Ever since he left YBNL in 2016, the YAGI boss has lost the sauce and struggling to come back ever since then

Iyanya

Iyanya redefined the tempo of Nigerian music with the fast-paced smash hit, ‘Kukere’. However, behind the scene was a little-known producer at the time, D’Tunes.

After leaving the MMG in October 2016 and announcing on Instagram that he signed a record deal with Mavin Records including a management deal with Temple Management Company.

The ‘Kukere’ master seemed to have taken a break. off music.

Harrysong

It is no longer news that Raggae Blues singer Harrysong has fallen out with his record label 5 Star Music over what many say was due to irreconcilable differences occasioned by lack of trust.

Since fallen out from the label, Harrysong has not been the same again, prior to his days in the label where he dishes out bangers year in year out.

Reekado Banks

Reekado Banks is not really getting it right lately. The super talented singer who won our heart under Mavin Records is already toying with it.

He lacks promotion basically. He is a very good singer no doubt. I mean you can’t be a record label owner and a singer at the same time. You need lots of concentration on the Label, as well as focus on your output.

He owns Banks Music but that Don Jazzy factor is still missing in his career and I think that is what has really helped him grow over the years.

We can only pray for him to get back to his winning ways, is not easy.

Ice Prince

When Ice Prince left Chocolate City, it was almost like he left his fame back then in the label, things went horrible almost immediately.

Ice Prince used to get a lot of hype when he still belonged to the record label. Now he lacks promotion and good production.

He puts in the effort to make good music no doubt, but we all know how good music with great promotion ends.

With good plans laid down and good songs dropping his camp, our dear Panshak will definitely be bursting speakers again.

Skales

Skales lacks a strong record label for promotion. He releases his music anyhow now. Empire Mates Entertainment (EME) helped him structure his craft.

His output reached his target audience to the maximum then. But now, there’s no form of anticipation when it comes to Skales and his music.

Also, all his recent songs are below par unlike when he was still with EME. It seems his former label understands his pattern and they know how to make him do good songs too.

Skales is seriously struggling ever since he left the Banky W‘s led EME label.

Solidstar

Joshua Iniyezo, an Afropop artiste better known as Solidstar, had parted ways with his record label, Achievas Entertainment in 2018 after a decade in the label.

Solidstar was known for churning out hit songs in the Nigerian music industry with enough buzz and was regarded as the top-listed act in the country.

Sugarboy

Umoren AKanimoh Felix (Oscar Jnr) Known as Sugarboy, is a Nigerian reggae-dancehall, Afrobeat singer, and songwriter.

At a point, he was the rave of the moment alongside Kizz Daniel in G worldwide record label, After the successful launch of his debut album “BELIEVE” at the Oriental Hotel.

After quitting his label, he has disappeared from the music scene.

Koker

This super talented guy that blessed us with jams some years back is very confused right now.

We honestly do not know where to place Koker. He stikes are like an unserious artist, who lacks a sense of direction. This makes it difficult to know where he stands.

This minute he’s shouting Choc City, the next he won’t stop saying Coke Boy. He really needs to stop confusing the audience.

I guess his lack of direction is why he is nowhere to be found.

If he can put himself together, get back to work with the right set of people around me, he will definitely win again as his talent is beyond just that of some random artiste.

Viktoh
