The Uruguayan midfielder, ahead of his country’s upcoming clash with Argentina in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, openly admitted that he doesn’t know how to stop Lionel Messi. Uruguay is set to face Argentina in a crucial match, with Uruguay currently second in the Conmebol World Cup 2026 qualifying standings, trailing Argentina by five points.

Despite Messi’s recent absence from competitive matches, the Inter Miami and Argentina star remains a formidable force. Uruguay, led by Marcelo Bielsa, secured a notable victory against Brazil in their last World Cup qualifying fixture, adding to the anticipation of their upcoming clash with Argentina.

In a pre-match interview, Valverde said he doesn’t know how to slow down Messi and could never do so when both played in La Liga: “I don’t know how to stop Messi, I could never stop him. He is one of the best players in the world.”

The midfielder also praised Suarez, who earned his first Uruguay nod since the 2022 World Cup: “From the first moment Suarez has given me the values and rules to succeed in the national team. He is an idol for Uruguay.”

La Celeste is set to engage in two pivotal World Cup qualifying fixtures this week. Their first challenge involves a journey to face Argentina, who have maintained an undefeated record. This will be a crucial matchup, as Uruguay aims to make a statement and potentially narrow the gap in the standings.

Following the Argentina encounter, Uruguay will return home to host Bolivia, a team yet to secure a victory in the qualifying campaign. These back-to-back fixtures provide an opportunity for Uruguay to solidify their position in second place in the standings and strengthen their campaign for the 2026 World Cup.

Luis Diaz is set to make his long-anticipated injury comeback from injury for Liverpool against Manchester City this weekend.

The Colombian has been out since sustaining a knee injury in the loss to Arsenal in October, but he resumed full training at Kirkby on Tuesday. If there is no negative response, Diaz will travel with Jurgen Klopp’s squad to the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

The news will be a great boost for Klopp, whose team has a vital eight days to finish in the top four. The Reds play City on Saturday, then travel to Chelsea on Tuesday before hosting league-leading Arsenal on April 9.

Darwin Nunez is not expected to be fit for the weekend, despite the striker missing the most recent Uruguay team due to a leg ailment, according to Klopp. But Thiago Alcantara, a midfielder, is still out with an unidentified hip problem.

The Spaniard hasn’t played since the beginning of February, and Liverpool had anticipated that he would be out for up to four weeks. He hasn’t joined the team for training, so he likely won’t be available for another crucial stretch for Klopp’s club.

The Reds presently hold the sixth spot in the Premier League, seven points behind Tottenham in fourth place despite having two games in hand. Newcastle is five points ahead of Liverpool, so they know that a loss against Manchester City on Saturday (12:30 GMT) may effectively put an end to their chances of qualifying for the Champions League.

Penalty spot kicks in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar have been quite important. The best feeling in football has to be when you score a penalty in a hostile environment when the pressure is unbearable but the ice in your veins tells you that you can do it.

Few players can thrive under pressure and resist playing mind games with opponents or goalkeepers in order to win a decisive penalty for the team.

This World Cup has seen a lot of these situations, and the players that stood up to take the penalty will be remembered. Others who were pressed into action and missed it will be reflecting on their situation.

Here are the top five players who have missed decisive penalties that could have altered the outcome of games:

5. Marquinhos

The PSG defender will have a bad memory of that day because his rebound helped Croatia score an equalizer, and he also missed a crucial penalty that could have kept Brazil in the game. Marquinhos missed the final penalty of the shootout that sealed his nation’s exit from the tournament.

Marquinhos came up to take the fourth penalty with Brazil down 4-2 after the shootout, and if he had made it, it would have kept them in the match. However, the player’s shot struck the bottom right corner bar, agonizingly ruining Brazil’s hopes of winning a fifth World Cup.

Croatia qualified for the tournament’s semi-finals for the second time in a row thanks to the victory. In 2018, they reached the finals before losing to France.

4. Sergio Busquets

He wasted his chance to keep Spain in the game by taking the third penalty rather than the first. Busquets had the chance to boost his nation’s spirits as Morocco had a two-penalty lead. But because of his lack of force in the penalty shootout, Bounou accurately predicted his penalty and denied Spain a spot in the shootout, sending Spain home from the World Cup.

The Barcelona midfielder was one of three players who failed to convert from the spot. After Spain was eliminated from the World Cup on penalties by Morocco, Sergio Busquets lamented a “cruel way to lose.” Busquets was one of three Spaniards to fail from the spot as La Roja crashed out of the competition in the last 16.

3. Robert Lewandowski

When one of the best goalkeepers in the world, Ochoa Mexican, anticipated Lewandowski’s shot and parried away his penalty against Mexico, he was named the best penalty taker in football. Poland advanced to the knockout stage when the match ended in a tie, although if they had won, they would have won the group and avoided playing a strong team in the round of 16.

Everything hinged on Poland’s final match against France, who eliminated them from the competition and allowed Poland to advance on goal differential.

Robert Lewandowski missed his first penalty for his country. With 76 goals overall, Poland’s all-time leading scorer has yet to record a World Cup goal.

2. Andre Ayew

Ghana appeared more interested in vengeance than winning the game. But it all started well for Ghana when they were awarded a penalty and Andre Ayew, who was part of the 2010 World Cup when Suarez ruined their hopes by saving a shot with his hands and was given a red card, was given a red card and Uruguay won on penalties.

Ayew seemed to be suffering from a hangover from that match because Rochet saved his penalty. Uruguay took advantage of the break by scoring twice, but neither of them counted because South Korea’s goal in the dying seconds ensured that they would advance to the round of 16.

The outcome of the game would have been radically different if Ayew had successfully converted his penalty.

1. Harry Kane

This was Kane’s most important penalty miss, and it will torment the Three Lions captain for months to come because his penalty would have kept England in the game.

Mason Mount of Chelsea was pushed into the box immediately after coming on as France had a 2-1 lead. Nevertheless, the referee disregarded the decision. Referee Wilton Pereira indicated toward the penalty area when VAR requested another review, and it was a well-deserving penalty.

England were one penalty away from tying the game in the 82nd minute. Kane, who had scored the previous penalty, took the risk and appeared at ease. However, it appeared like Kane had capitulated under pressure and skied his penalty, resulting in jubilation from France’s fans and players as England was unable to find an equalizer and were knocked from the competition.

Luis Suarez has refused to apologize for his handball against Ghana in 2010, claiming that it was not his responsibility that the resulting penalty was missed.

In Suarez’s career thus far, the quarterfinal match between Uruguay and Ghana at the 2010 World Cup was one of many contentious occasions.

Ghana had the possibility to become the first African team to ever make it to the tournament’s final four, and because it was the first time the tournament had ever been held in Africa, the entire continent was rooting for them.

When the ball was headed past Uruguay goalkeeper Fernando Muslera with the scores tied at 1-1 in the final minute of extra time, it appeared as though the fairytale would come true.

However, Suarez was behind Muslera and deflected the ball with his hand.

He was sent off and Ghana had the chance to claim victory from the spot, but Asamoah Gyan fired his penalty against the bar. In the shoot-out that followed, Uruguay prevailed.

In the final Group H encounter of this year’s World Cup, with advancement to the round of 16 on the line, Suarez will face the squad for the first time since that event, which has caused him to be despised throughout Ghana.

In the press conference ahead of the match, he discussed his handball and refused to apologise for it, saying it was Gyan’s fault the African side went out, not his.

“I don’t apologise about that,” he said.

“I take the handball – but the Ghana player misses a penalty, not me. Maybe I apologise if I injure a player but in this situation, I take a red card, the ref says penalty, it’s not my fault.

“I didn’t miss the penalty. It’s not my fault.”

South Korea and Portugal will complete their World Cup 2022 Group H campaigns when they meet on Friday at the Education City Stadium.

Fernando Santos’ team is already assured to advance to the round of 16, having earned six points from victories against Ghana and Uruguay, and they only need to draw to finish first.

The third matchday of the FIFA World Cup 2022 has begun. Even though Portugal has already advanced to the World Cup knockout rounds, when they play South Korea on the tournament’s final day of group stage matches, they have a chance to clinch the top spot in Group H.

Things have gone reasonably well for Portugal, who have won their last two games, and they will be confident in their chances against a South Korean team that has battled this winter on both sides of the field.

South Korea’s campaign began with a scoreless draw against Uruguay, but their most recent match ended in heartache as they lost 3-2 to Ghana. Korea is still in the running to advance to the next round, but in order to do so, they must win by a score of at least two goals and hope that Ghana and Uruguay’s match ends in a draw.

• Team News:

Due to a hamstring issue, Hwang Hee-chan has been inactive for South Korea so far in the tournament, and the forward is still a big question mark for Friday’s match.

Son Heung-min, 30, will start for Bento’s team in this game and is expected to earn his 107th cap for the national team. Kim Min-Jae of Napoli will line up in the middle of the defence.

The South Korean starting lineup will once again be led by Cho Gue-sung, who scored twice against Ghana the last time they played. Kwon Chang-hoon should keep his spot in the wide position.

Hwang At-beom should have his own space in the park’s centre.

Nuno Mendes, a defender for Portugal, had to be replaced in the final minutes of the first half of the team’s matchup with Uruguay the previous time round and has been ruled out for the remainder of the competition.

Danilo is also out with broken ribs, and Otavio is questionable due to the injury that kept him out of the previous match against Uruguay.

Raphael Guerreiro should replace Mendes as left-back, but Cristiano Ronaldo’s status for the game is uncertain because he missed Wednesday’s training.

Diogo Dalot, Joao Palhinha, and Goncalo Ramos could all start this game, according to Santos, who has said that he will make changes.

• Possible Lineup:

South Korea’s possible starting lineup:
Seung-gyu; Moon-hwan, Min-jae, Young-gwon, Jin-su; Woo-young, In-beom; Chang-hoon, Woo-yeong, Heung-min; Gue-sung

Portugal’s possible starting lineup:
Costa; Dalot, Pepe, Dias, Guerreiro; Bernardo, Neves, Palhinha; Fernandes; Ronaldo, Ramos

• Score Prediction:

Taegeuk Warriors put up a strong performance against Ghana and are anticipated to do the same against Portugal in their last group-stage match. Ask Ghana how Son Heung-min and company might be problematic. Finding a method to win against Portugal, though, is a very different matter, and even a weak Portugal team will be confident going into this match.

Portugal should easily win this game even if they let up a little on the gas pedal.

Prediction: South Korea 1-3 Portugal.

On Friday, Ghana will play Uruguay in Group H, knowing that a win would move them along with Portugal to the World Cup’s knockout stage.

A win would advance the Black Stars to the knockout stages and provide at least some retaliation for the two teams’ controversial World Cup semi-final meeting in 2010.

There is only one spot left in the group for the remaining three teams because Portugal is already in the Round of 16. Following their recent victory against South Korea, Ghana would be feeling confident.

Although Jordan Ayew had a costly game, the Ghanaians eventually managed to control the contest. Mohammed Salisu and Mohammed Kudus both scored goals for them after he brought more venom to their attack.

With two goals from Cho Gue-sung in the second half, the Korean squad made a strong comeback. Despite the scare, Kudus put his team in the lead as they clung on for a narrow victory. The following World Cup 2022 match will feature Ghana vs. Uruguay.

In their season opener against South Korea, Uruguay played to a scoreless draw, while their most recent match against Portugal ended in a 2-0 loss. Only by defeating the African side in this match can they advance to the next round. Additionally, Uruguay will need to hope that South Korea loses to Portugal in their match.

• Team News:

The same starting lineup for this game would not be unexpected given that Ghana has not disclosed any injury concerns from their play against South Korea.

RELATED:

Mohammed Kudus scored twice his last time out and was in fantastic form. As a result of his performances at the tournament, teams like Barcelona and Liverpool have expressed interest in signing him.

Jordan Ayew and Andre Ayew are also expected to keep their attacking positions in the three behind the centre-forward, with Inaki Williams once more slated to lead the line for Ghana.

Salis Abdul Samed should replace Thomas Partey in the middle of the midfield.

It would not be surprising to see Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani start on the bench here for Uruguay because they have both struggled to make an impression at this summer’s competition.

Maxi Gomez, who shone off the bench against Portugal, might partner Darwin Nunez in the attack, with Suarez and Cavani perhaps coming into the game later.

Since Jose Gimenez, Federico Valverde, and Rodrigo Bentancur are all expected to start again, head coach Alonso is probably going to resist the need to rearrange his squad.

Since the start of the competition, there have been questions about Ronald Araujo’s fitness, and it seems likely that the Barcelona defender won’t make the squad for this game.

• Possible Lineup:

Ghana’s possible starting lineup:
Ati-Zigi; Lamptey, Amartey, Salisu, Mensah; Partey, Samed; Kudus, A Ayew, J Ayew; Williams.

Uruguay’s possible starting lineup:
Rochet; Gimenez, Godin, Coates; Varela, Valverde, Bentancur, De Arrascaeta, Olivera; Nunez, Gomez.

• Score prediction:

Prediction: Ghana 2-1 Uruguay.

Inter goalkeeper André Onana has released an official statement after leaving Cameroon at the World Cup claiming that put his ‘efforts and energy into finding solutions to a situation that a footballer often experiences’ but found ‘no will on the other side.’

The Cameroonian international is taking a flight back home after being left off the squad for Monday’s World Cup match against Uruguay.

Onana is returning home from Qatar, according to a Tuesday morning report from Gazzetta, after his national team opted to temporarily suspend him for disciplinary reasons.

In a statement posted to his social media page, Onana clarified the matter from his point of view.

Onana could have been reinstated to the team if he had adjusted his attitude and adhered to the rules, according to Cameroon coach Rigobert Song on Monday.

Onana, 26, made the decision to leave the team and go back to his native country, though the rift between him and his national team coach is said to be “irreparable.”

Cameroon have one point after two games in Group G and has little chance of qualifying for the Round of 16 given that they need to beat Brazil in the final match of the group phase on Friday.

Cristiano Ronaldo claimed the credit in a text message to Piers Morgan after the game, claiming that he did touch the ball for Portugal’s first goal against Uruguay on Monday night.

The Portuguese superstar believed he had scored his second goal of the competition and ninth goal overall in the World Cup finals when, halfway into the second half, he appeared to make the slightest of touches on a cross from Bruno Fernandes.

However, not a single video or photo clearly captured Ronaldo touching the ball, and FIFA and the stadium announcer both agreed that Fernandes was the scorer.

The 37-year-old is renowned for being record-obsessed and will undoubtedly be irritated that he is still tied with longtime rival Lionel Messi on eight goals at World Cups despite the fact that 23 players have scored more goals than him in tournament history.

Ronaldo was seen waving his finger after the game and seemed upset with the decision.

It has since come to light that the former Manchester United attacker texted Morgan, who earlier this month had an explosive interview with the five-time Ballon d’Or winner that led to the termination of his contract, insisting that he should have been given credit for the goal.

Fox Soccer pundit and former USA captain Alexi Lalas revealed the exchange after the game, with Morgan working for the US broadcaster during the tournament.

‘I was just with Piers Morgan and he said that Cristiano texted him from the locker room saying that he believes it touched his head,’ said the American. ‘So, uhm, who knows…’

Morgan also tweeted a picture of the ball appearing to brush a few strands of Ronaldo’s hair, saying: ‘Ronaldo touched that ball. He should be awarded the goal.’

After the match, the former Real Madrid superstar’s team-mates were a little sheepish when asked about whether or not Ronaldo had touched the ball, though Fernandes himself was happy for the veteran forward to be given it.

‘I don’t think it really matters who scored the goal at this point,’ said Fernandes, who was named Man of the Match after also scoring from the penalty spot in the 2-0 win.

‘The feeling I had was Cristiano touched the ball, I was putting the ball to him and the important thing is we were able to win the match against a very tough opponent.’

William Carvalho, meanwhile, said: ‘Yes, my first impression was that it had been a Ronaldo goal, but what’s important is the victory. It doesn’t matter if it was Bruno or Ronaldo. We played a great game and we have to continue like that.’

On a thrilling day of competition in Qatar on Monday, Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal and five-time winners Brazil joined France in the World Cup knockout rounds with a game remaining.

Only three teams have secured spots in the quadrennial competition’s knockout rounds.

After two victories in two games, only Portugal, Brazil, and France remain in the running for the knockout rounds. Their final group match will determine their fate while we wait for other countries to advance to the round of 16.

The World Cup’s build-up was clouded by controversy, but since then, the excitement, joy, and celebration felt during the competition have exceeded all expectations. In addition, we have come this far with dark horses pulling big upsets during the competition.

Although Spain, Argentina, Germany, and England are among the favourites in this tournament, they have thus far played well, and their individual matchups will determine their fate.

Brazil, Portugal, and France, the remaining contenders, have already advanced to the elimination round.

The group elimination curse, which affects every reigning champion that fails to advance past the group stages at the following World Cup, was broken by France, the first country to do so, and France showed steadfastness in doing so.

France defeated Australia 4-1 in their opening group match, and they then defeated Denmark 2-1. Brazil fought hard to defeat Switzerland 1-0 to complete a 2-0 victory.

Meanwhile, Portugal, followed a similar scenario, winning 3-2 against Ghana and handily defeating Uruguay by a score of 2-0.

All three countries now have a chance to get to the quarterfinals without having to face any formidable opponents. The losers of Group G will play Portugal.

The second-place team from Group H, which might be Uruguay, Ghana, or South Korea, will play Brazil. The Group C runners-up, which might be Poland, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, or Argentina, will oppose France.

All group games will be played at the same time tomorrow, which will signal the start of the Round of 16. Players from France, Portugal, and Brazil will undoubtedly take a break, and the Round of 16 will now take centre stage.

In a dramatic and unpredictable World Cup Group H match on Monday, Ghana defeated South Korea 3-2 thanks to two goals from Mohammed Kudus, keeping them in the running for the next round.

Cho Gue-sung scored twice in three minutes to tie the score at 2-2 after Ghana had led 2-0 at the half. Kudus then scored to give Ghana the lead and secure victory at the Education City Stadium.

Ghana, who lost their opening group game 3-2 to Portugal, moved on to three points in the group, with the Koreans on one after two games.

With a fumbled goal from center-back Mohammed Salisu in the 24th minute and a glancing header from Kudus ten minutes later, Ghana held off early Korean pressure to go up 2-0.

Jordan Ayew, who was reinstated to the starting lineup, delivered both goals with consummate skill as Ghana fielded a considerably more offensive lineup than it did against Portugal.

The Korean defence was caught off guard by Ayew’s expertly weighted free kick, and Salisu quickly turned to score the game’s first goal as the ball whirled about. Before English referee Anthony Taylor could certify the goal, VAR took a while to verify its legitimacy.

Once more, Ayew launched a dangerous cross that Kudus met with a glancing touch on his head to double the Black Stars’ advantage.

Early second-half substitutions gave Korea’s attack new life, and after just one minute on the field, Lee kang-in assisted in taking down Tariq Lamptey and fired in a cross that Cho quickly charged at, leaving Salisu watching as he dribbled in front of his defender to score a header in the 58th minute.

The 24-year-old centre forward was even more determined as a chip from Kim Jin-su caught the out-of-position goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi scrambling and Cho climbed above the centre backs to score a dramatic equaliser, right in front of a bank of screaming Korean supporters.

Ghana, who would have been eliminated from the World Cup had they lost, looked vulnerable but were handed a surprise lifeline by sloppy Korean defending in the 68th minute.

While the Korean backline failed to attack the ball, Gideon Mensah was able to send in a cross from the left, which Inaki Williams missed but fell to Kudus for a left-footed goal.

After the fortunate break in the game for the Black Stars, Ati-Zigi made a superb save from Lee’s free kick and watched as Kim Jin-errant SU’s attempt was cleared off the line.

Korea pounded Ghana’s goal for the entire extra 10 minutes, but they were unable to score another equalizer. Ghana continued to live in danger.

The referee was besieged at the final whistle as he ended the game with South Korea about to take a corner and their coach Paulo Bento earned a red card for his protestations.

With a point, each in their opening Group H match, South Korea and Uruguay set an unwanted “first record in FIFA World Cup history.

During the FIFA World Cup, numerous strange records were broken. Another record of this kind was set on Thursday during the Uruguay vs. South Korea game of the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar. The match ended in a scoreless tie, the fourth one this tournament.

Both teams had goal opportunities, with Uruguay hitting the post twice. South Korea and Uruguay engaged in a heated match, with both sides exchanging similar possession. South Korea was more frightening, but they lacked innovation in the opponent’s box.

Uruguay struggled against the strong pressing of the Asian giants because they were frequently unable to keep up with the pace.

When Hwang Ui Jo missed his attempt from 12 yards out, South Korea had a great chance to make a breakthrough.

The South American juggernauts, on the other hand, were nearly in control when Diego Godin’s header struck the far post. Federico Valverde’s attempt hit the post and rebounded, giving Uruguay another chance to score.

The South American giants were disappointed, nevertheless, to lose. Heung-Min Son had one final opportunity to give South Korea the lead when Sergio Rochet’s careless clearing fell into his path, but he missed the target.

Interestingly, Uruguay attempted 10 shots, while South Korea had seven, none of which were on target. It has never happened before in a World Cup game this century. Both teams had a sufficient number of shots on goal, but none of them was successful in testing the goalkeeper.

Zero shots on target were recorded by FIFA for either team, which is unusual in a World Cup match. This occurred during a FIFA World Cup match for the first time ever in the 20th century. It’s extremely surprising considering that the game included some of the tops forwards in the world.

In Qatar, the FIFA World Cup 2022 is already well underway, and like in previous tournaments, surprises are to be expected. It is normal for an underdog to pull off an incredible victory over one of the teams thought to be superior in every FIFA World Cup.

The FIFA World Cup 2022 has only been going on for three days, but already the competition has been lit up by some amazing performances. We have seen significant one-sided outcomes, boring draws, and most importantly, upsets.

Is there anything that makes a football fan happier than an upset? What makes football the best sport in the world is when underdogs or little football nations defeat giants. In FIFA World Cup 2022, nothing has changed.

Japan shocked Germany, following Saudi Arabia’s surprising victory against tournament favourites Argentina on Tuesday.

In both cases, the victorious team overcame early deficits to surprise the more well-known side and rewrite history.

In this article, Mp3bullet have examined the six biggest surprises from previous FIFA World Cups.

• 2002 World Cup – {South Korea 2-1 Italy}.

Co-hosts Guus Hiddink’s South Korea team performed admirably during the FIFA World Cup in 2002. In a game marred by referee mistakes, the Asians upset one of the tournament favourites to get to the quarterfinals.

Italy was one of the favourites to win the title because they had many of the top players in the world in their prime. In the first half, Christian Vieri gave Azzurri the lead as South Korea faced a reduced but still talented Italy team.

Seol Ki-Hyeon scored an equalizer in the 88th minute, and Ahn Jung-Hwan scored the game-winning goal with a header in the 117th.

South Korea lost to Germany in the semifinals and Turkey in the third-place playoff in the 2002 FIFA World Cup, which was played on home soil, however, that was their best-ever performance at a FIFA World Cup.

• 2002 World Cup – {Senegal 1-0 France}.

When France faced debutants Senegal in their group stage opening, they were aiming to defend their FIFA World Cup title. Despite having other elite players and playing without influential midfielder Zinedine Zidane due to injury, Les Bleus shockingly fell short against Senegal.

Senegal sought to demonstrate that it was no pushover and that it was a power to be feared. After only 30 minutes of play, the Lions of Teranga scored a goal through Papa Bouba Diop and then proceeded to defend desperately. They managed to hang on to the victory, a significant one for them.

With just one point from three games, France was eliminated from the competition in the group stage. On the other side, Senegal advanced to the quarterfinals before falling to Turkey by a solitary goal.

• 2014 World Cup – {Costa Rica 1 – 0 Italy}.

The Central American underdog, Costa Rica, had to be the subject of an underdog tale created by the footballing gods. They not only defeated four-time champion Italy 1-0, but they also won their group, which included England and Uruguay. They eventually advanced to the quarterfinal round, when they were eliminated by the Netherlands on penalties.

Their victory over the 2012 Euro finalists in Italy, though, was definitely their defining moment. The game’s deciding goal came from a header by Bryan Ruiz in the 44th minute. For the first time in 24 years, they were guaranteed entry into the knockout rounds thanks to the victory. However, the highly anticipated European duo of England and Italy were eliminated.

The defending champions from 2014 Like every World Cup, Germany entered the competition with great hopes. They were, however, in for a harsh awakening as they crashed out of the group stages after losing to a new “Loew” under manager Joachim Loew. In a group that also included South Korea, Mexico, and Sweden, Germany came in last.

Germany lost 0-2 against South Korea in their final group-stage match with qualification on the line. The Asian team, despite simply competing for pride, put up a defensive performance of the highest calibre under the direction of veteran Dutchman Guus Hiddink.

South Korea managed to pull off a surprising victory by scoring twice in stoppage time after fending off the German blitzkrieg the entire game without conceding. As a result, Germany failed to advance past the group stage for the first time since 1938.

• 2022 World Cup – {Argentina 1-2 Saudi Arabia}.

Saudi Arabia’s defeat of Argentina in Qatar, probably the biggest surprise in FIFA World Cup history, shocked the favourites. La Albiceleste won the Copa America after going 36 games without a loss since 2019.

After going in front through a Lionel Messi penalty ten minutes into the game, Argentina lost to a quickfire double from Saudi Arabia in five second-half minutes. Saleh Al-Shehri and Salem Al-Dawsari scored in the 48th and 53rd minutes, respectively, to hand Saudi Arabia a hard-earned win over Argentina.

The most notable performance or outcome by an Arab nation in the World Cup thus far was Saudi Arabia’s victory over Argentina. La Albiceleste must regroup for the remainder of the group stage after being stunned in Lusail.

• 2022 World Cup – {Germany 1-2 Japan}.

The rebels are winning the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. The best day in Saudi Arabian football history will always be November 22. After their illustrious victory over Argentina, the Saudi King proclaimed a day of celebration in their memory. A similar response appears to be in store for today in the streets of Tokyo after Japan surprised Germany at the Khalifa International Stadium in Doha.

Ilkay Gundogan’s first-half penalty gave the Germans the advantage early on, and they appeared to be in complete control. Japan, like the Saudis, however, displayed tenacity and spirit to pull off an incredible comeback. Ritsu Doan and Takuma Asano each scored late goals for the Samurai Blue to pull off the shocker.

Until 2018, Germany hadn’t gone out from the group stages at FIFA World Cups since 1938. Germany might lose to Spain on Sunday and leave the group stage once more.
