Unathi sued Kaya 959 for R1.6 million after being sacked as a result of a disagreement she had with Sizwe Dhlomo.

Unathi Nkayi, a media personality and musician, disclosed last month that she is suing Kaya 959 for unjust dismissal and income loss.

She is reportedly asking for R1.6 million from the radio station, according to Sunday World.

According to the case, which was submitted last week to the Johannesburg High Court, the former Idols SA broadcaster signed a contract with the station on February 11, 2020. Her contract started on March 1 of 2020 and was supposed to last through February 28 of 2023.

Unathi was fired by Kaya 859‘s former manager Sibongile Mtyali in November 2021 as a result of a disagreement with Sizwe Dhlomo, the host of the radio station’s drive show.

The singer for Kwa Nolali had criticised Sizwe Dhlomo’s tardiness to management.

She also allegedly accused Sizwe of gender-based violence (GBV), which resulted in her dismissal after Kaya 959 management apparently looked into her claims and found them to be untrue. Unathi, however, refuted the GBV allegations in a statement she issued at the time.

Mtyali was sacked by Kaya 959 after Sizwe complained about sports presenter Mpho Maboi allegedly consistently showing up late for their pre-show preparation sessions, City Press claimed a year after Unathi was fired.

Unathi allegedly suffered contractual losses totalling R1 300 000 due to the dismissal, as stated in court documents.

“The total sum which the defendant failed to pay over the 16-month period was R1 300 000.00 [R81 250.00 multiplied by 16]. Despite demand, the defendant has failed to pay to the plaintiff the sum of R1 300 000.00. The defendant is ordered to pay to the plaintiff the sum of R1 300 000.00,” read the papers.

She further requests that the station remove a statement from its web page that claims there was a breach of trust with regard to her account of the incident and that it “unfortunately was found wanting.” She is seeking R100 000 for this.

She also wants R200 000 for a loss of dignity after the station claimed in its letter of termination that she lied about her complaint regarding Sizwe Dhlomo.

“I don’t hate him, we haven’t fought, we just don’t have a relationship because he chose sides.”

On the Uncalled podcast, Unathi Nkayi shares candidly on a number of subjects. The saga she had with Kaya FM in 2022 is one of the topics that is explored.

The radio station hushed the star after she got into a verbal altercation with Sizwe Dhlomo, leading to her dismissal. She was unable to discuss it.

Unathi claimed on the podcast with Gareth Cliff that her father had advised her to file a lawsuit after a year, despite the fact that she had been rather adamant in resisting the suggestion.
