Tchelete (Good Life) Featuring Mafikizolo

The struggle for pan-African appeal was the biggest musical trend of 2014, with South Africa and Nigeria leading the charge. Music duo, Theo Kgosinkwe and Nhlanhla Nciza, known as Mafikizolo was the catalyst for the movement.

Their comeback track Khona, last year’s biggest Afrohouse hit, spawned a slew of collaborations with Nigerian, Tanzanian, and Kenyan musicians, all of which were met with varying degrees of success.

Tchelete was a 2014 collaboration with Davido, who was Naija pop’s current it-boy at that moment and by far the most popular.

The collaboration also inspired Nigerian producers to infuse elements of South-African music into their sound and this was evidenced even in songs emanating from the streets.

The Sound ft. Uhuru, DJ Buckz

Produced by Shizzi, “The Sound” was dropped in 2015 and features South African prolific producers Uhuru and DJ Buckz.

The Sound followed Davido’s successful collaboration with the Mafikizolo and it was also bigger, showcasing Davido’s appeal across borders.

Davido’s vibrant singing blended perfectly with the house music instrumentals and Uhuru and DJ Buckz also held the ball up.

‘The Sound’ was another instant hit and Davido had all of Africa dancing to this one.

Coolest Kid in Africa- ft Nasty C

In 2016, Davido and South African rapper Nasty C collaborated to create the song “Coolest Kid in Africa.”

The song, which was included on his Son Of Mercy EP, was quite successful and included trap-like music produced by Sesan Ogunro. Both artists gave the song’s lyrics a wonderful delivery to keep it entertaining.

Champion Sound- ft Focalistic

Davido has developed a relationship with South African golden kid, Focalistic collaborating with him on songs like Ke Star and Champion Sound.

In February 2021, South African recording artist Focalistic released the remix of his top-charting single “Me Star,” in which he included Davido and Virgo Deep.

Later, Davido would invite the South African celebrity to appear on his most recent song, named “Champion Sound” which is a feel-good track with a soft tempo beat that has a party and feel-good vibe.

The early 2010s was a blissful year with many hots dominating the radios. One of them was “Windeck” by Angolan artist, Cabo Snoop.

“Windeck” is the song that captured listeners whether or not they understood the language and got them dancing once it came on the speaker.

Alhaji- Ramatoulaye Decale

This was a song that was popular thanks to the heavy use of drums and lamba.

Azonto- Fuse ODG ft Tiffany

Fuse ODG put Ghana on the music map when he dropped “Azonto” featuring Ghanaian Afro-pop artist, Itz Tiffany.

The song started a movement with its funky beat and dance routine which started a huge trend in Ghana and internationally. It was released in 2013 and was one of the tracks from his new and great album named “T.I.N.A. (This Is New Africa)”.

Khona- Mafikizolo ft Uhuru

Mafikizolo is a South African Afro-pop music duo formed in 1996 consisting of composer Theo Kgosinkwe and lead singer Nhlanhla Nciza.

From 1997 to 2006, they released seven successful albums before going on a hiatus. They resumed work as a group in 2013 when they released their internationally acclaimed single “Khona” featuring Uhuru.

“Khona” was a hit in South Africa and outside it.

Dorobucci- Mavins

In the history of Nigerian pop collaborations, “Dorobucci” is one of the few songs that was a culture reset.

The guy blew up with a smash featuring 9ice, actually a remixed version of “Irapada”, which quickly captivated everyone, especially due to the fact that his Yoruba lyrics were a bit deep.

Since then, he’s had collaborations, done a few big singles, but it’s not like he’s got an album or a huge award anywhere, so for now, he’s still that promising guy we think would explode and it’s only a matter of time.

His hits, or most of them, anyway, have been some motivational or hustler’s prayer stuff. In this economy, nothing sells better, you know. That wasn’t it, though. Junior Boy really had a knack for those vibes and he did make the most out of it.

But man has to eat and do some commercially viable stuff sometimes. Maybe a club banger, or a love song, or something. At least, he’s been trying to prove that he’s not just stuck, that he’s a versatile and talented singer. So, once in a while, he comes through with some stuff we don’t expect. The last time he did that was “Anita Baker.”

Well, he’s doing it again with this new one, “Ngwa.” This has got some really fast tempo, that you can’t but wonder where this kind of vibe came from or where you’ve heard it from before.

Back when afro-pop didn’t have a “business plan” and our industry haven’t met Ghana’s mid-tempo highlife influenced tune, somehow the stuff that was hot then were fast (that’s Ngwa in Igbo, by the way.) Mostly because of the influence South African house had then.

You could say the Terry G‘s were the ones who kick-started the fast tempo thing, but it was through the help of the South African vibe that we were able to fuse it with what was called afro-pop then. And those times, it wasn’t hard to find DJ Maphorisa hovering around. Mafikizolo came around for a while too, you know.

And producers like Uhuru, who had that signature tune, made it real but down here. There were guys like Skales, Kcee, and Runtown, who Uhuru was hooking up with and cooking some vibes. Big shots like Wizkid and Davido did play their part in making those stuff big, too.

That was before the “pon pon pon” revolution started in 2015 or so. Before everything went so slow and sent some guys out of business.

Anyway, Junior Boy is bringing back our South African vibe and “Ngwa” is really reminiscent of those jams. It even had a Uhuru kind of interlude. Crisp, if you ask me. We can only hope this becomes Junior’s next hit. Even though the chances this is going to stick are slim.
