Chelsea’s head coach, Enzo Maresca, has provided an update on the injury concerns ahead of their upcoming Premier League clash against Wolves at Stamford Bridge on January 20, 2025.

Speaking at a pre-match press conference, Maresca revealed that four first-team players, including key figures Cole Palmer and Enzo Fernandez, were absent from the latest training session.

“We have Cole and Levi not in the session. Enzo not in the session. Romeo not in the session. Three, four players who are a doubt because of the last game. Cole, the ankle in the first half. He didn’t train today. The same situation for Enzo, Romeo, and Levi,” the Italian explained.

Chelsea’s recent league form has been underwhelming, with the team securing just three points from a possible 15 in their last five matches against Crystal Palace, Everton, Ipswich, Fulham, and Bournemouth. Fans will be hoping the Blues can turn their fortunes around in the match against Wolves.

In addition, the coach speaks on Trevoh Chalobah’s return to the club; he said

“It’s quite an easy process. We have a few injuries, so we were looking for a solution. We thought the best solution was to call back Trev. He can help us. He was very happy. I can see his face, I chatted with him. We are happy.”

The 25-year-old defender joined Palace on a season-long loan in August, which included a mid-season recall option. Chelsea have now triggered that clause, and Chalobah will return to Stamford Bridge immediately.

As a result, Chalobah will not be available for Palace’s Premier League match against Leicester City on Wednesday. During his time at Palace, Chalobah made 14 appearances and impressed with his performances. His form, combined with Chelsea’s injury-stricken backline, makes him a key addition for manager Enzo Maresca in the second half of the season.

Chelsea’s defensive options have been limited, with Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile sidelined due to injuries. In their absence, academy graduate Josh Acheampong partnered Levi Colwill in Tuesday night’s draw against Bournemouth. Chalobah’s return provides much-needed depth and experience as Chelsea aim to solidify their defense.

Chelsea appreciated Crystal Palace’s handling of Chalobah’s loan, with all parties maintaining a good relationship throughout the arrangement. The Blues are set to face Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday, and Chalobah could feature in the squad for that match.

This marks the latest twist in a tumultuous period for Trevoh Chalobah, who seemed destined to move on from Chelsea when he joined Crystal Palace on a season-long loan in August.

Last summer, Chelsea made it clear that Chalobah was not part of head coach Enzo Maresca’s plans for the season. He was excluded from the club’s preseason tour squad, stripped of his squad number, and relegated to training with the “bomb squad”—a group of players deemed surplus to requirements.

However, his impressive performances at Palace have altered his trajectory, paving the way for his recall to Stamford Bridge as Chelsea look to bolster their injury-hit defense.

Chelsea have completed the signing of French centre-back Axel Disasi from Monaco.

Earlier this week, a £38 million deal was reached with Monaco to bring Disasi, who spent last season playing with current Blues defender Benoit Badiashile, to Stamford Bridge.

The agreement is officially finalized, with 25-year-old Disasi signing with Chelsea through a six-year contract.

Chelsea has once again splurged by signing Axel Diasai from Monaco. The defender has been welcomed to Stamford Bridge by co-sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley and will help Mauricio Pochettino’s defence.

“Axel has showcased his quality over several seasons in France and that has deservedly led to recognition on the international stage,” they told the club’s official website.

“He is ready to take the next step in his career and we are delighted that will be with Chelsea. We welcome him to the club and look forward to him joining up with Mauricio Pochettino and his new teammates in the days ahead.”

Axel Disasi: “I am so happy to be here, at this big club. I am really proud to be able to be a part of this great family, and I hope to achieve very big things here. To win titles. I will do everything I can to achieve those objectives. I am very ambitious.”

“I can’t wait to feel the energy of the fans. This is a very good stadium, one where you have a beautiful proximity to the fans… The fervour of the fans in the Premier League, the atmosphere, the intensity… it is something that excites me.

I’m a defender who likes to properly look for the ball and win it back. he best way of anticipating the opposition player’s move is by being in the best position possible. I like to have the ball at my feet and play passes. I like interceptions, and I like to be aggressive with the opposition, to use my physicality.

It’s a familiar club for French people, and I hope all the French players here now can join that line of great players.”

A move for Disasi was accelerated after it was revealed that fellow defender Wesley Fofana had undergone surgery on an ACL injury which will keep him out for the majority of the coming campaign.

Disasi’s former Monaco colleague Badiashile joins Thiago Silva, Levi Colwill, and Trevoh Chalobah as available alternatives at centre-back for the upcoming season.

Pochettino had an unblemished preseason and will return to Premier League action when Liverpool visits London on August 13th.

Checking into new surroundings! 🙌

According to reports, Chelsea have held talks with Lyon over the signing of right-back Malo Gusto.

With the additions of Joao Felix, Mykhailo Mudryk, and Noni Madueke this month, the Blues have been busy reinforcing their offence. However, right-back is another area of focus for Chelsea as they continue to struggle without Reece James.

Sources have already revealed that conversations have been had with Lyon about Gusto, a 19-year-old right-back, and the club executives are aggressively trying to recruit a new right-back.

Chelsea’s interest in Gusto was initially made known in October when scouts from Stamford Bridge, as well as those from Arsenal, Barcelona, Manchester City, and Manchester United, observed the young defender.

Now, the Blues have made their move to try and recruit Gusto, whose current Lyon contract has just 18 months left to run.

Gusto fits into Chelsea’s current transfer model – attempting to recruit a team of young stars – and is seen as viable competition to James, who remains the club’s clear first-choice for the position when fit.

Lyon are well aware of their battle to keep Gusto, both in terms of a transfer and concerning his expiring contract, but they are determined to hold on to the teenager for at least the remainder of the current season.

The French team is unwilling to part ways with a starting defender halfway through the season because they missed out on playing in Europe last season and are further behind this time around. They have dropped to ninth in the Ligue 1 standings and are currently 12 points outside of the qualification spots.

Chelsea might pursue a contract that allowed Gusto to stay with Lyon for the following six months, but the Blues are presently prioritizing a permanent transfer to strengthen a position that has consistently been difficult to fill when James is injured.

33-year-old Cesar Azpilicueta, who made his 500th appearance for Chelsea in Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Liverpool, has struggled to match James’ output and Graham Potter has often resorted to using centre-back Trevoh Chalobah out on the right instead.

Chelsea has a number of targets in mind to fix their right-back weaknesses, including Gusto, Denzel Dumfries from Inter, and Pedro Porro from Sporting CP.

Following a superb run of play for the Blues, Trevoh Chalobah has extended his contract with Chelsea, keeping him at Stamford Bridge until 2028.

The defender, who began playing for the team at the age of nine and rose through the ranks to earn a spot in the senior squad, has now signed a contract that keeps him with the Blues through at least June 2028, with a club option to extend to 2029.

In his 18 months as a senior player at Stamford Bridge, Chalobah has already made 43 appearances for the Blues, and he will be aiming for many more in the years to come.

Chalobah, a Cobham graduate who pursued a career in football after his older brother Nathaniel, has made 13 appearances this season across all competitions.

In the autumn, he contributed to back-to-back clean sheets in the Champions League against AC Milan as we overcame a rocky start in Europe to finish as group winners. Under Graham Potter, he has primarily played as the right-sided or centre defender in a back three.

The 23-year-senior old’s Chelsea career took off last season when, on his first outing at Stamford Bridge, he scored a stunning goal against Crystal Palace, falling to his knees in an impassioned celebration. He participated in 30 games during the 2021–2022 season, scoring his first Champions League goal against Juventus.

Chelsea chairman Todd Boehly and co-controlling owner Behdad Eghbali said:

‘We’re delighted that Trevoh will be extending his stay with Chelsea. He has been with us since childhood and has grown into an exceptional young player. He’s an important part of our men’s first-team squad and we’re excited to see what’s next for Trevoh at Chelsea.’

On signing his new deal, Chalobah said:

‘I’m over the moon to sign this contract. It’s been an honour every time I put the shirt on. I want to give my all and do anything for this club.

‘As everyone knows I’ve been here from a young age and to continue here is every kid’s dream. Whenever I get the chance, I’ll give my all for the club and look for the future ahead. I want to say thanks to God for this, without Him none of this would be possible. And just always believing. Thanks to my family as well and the club for trusting in me. I’ll now continue to give my all.’

Brighton football manager Roberto De Zerbi hailed his team’s performance in their 4-1 victory over Chelsea on Saturday and disclosed that he specifically targeted two blues players.

Graham Potter visited the Seagulls in what seemed to be a grudge match, and the new Chelsea manager was heckled and jeered by his former supporters, some of whom even yelled that he would be fired the next morning as the goals came in.

Leandro Trossard gave the home team the lead after only five minutes, but two own goals by Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Chalobah gave Brighton a three-goal lead going into halftime.

After the break, Kai Havertz scored, but Brighton played well before Pascal Gross added to the score in stoppage time.

Throughout the game, Brighton got enormous joy down the flanks with Estupinan and Kaoru Mitoma – who was involved in two of the goals – raiding down the left and March causing problems down the right.

With Potter selecting Christian Pulisic and Raheem Sterling as a wing-back, De Zerbi felt Chelsea’s outside centre-backs – Chalobah and Marc Cucurella – could be exposed and went one-to-one against them.

De Zerbi responded to a question about whether he had focused on Chelsea’s outside centre-backs by saying:

‘We prepared the game one-to-one with Mitoma with Chalobah and one-to-one with Solly March against Cucurella. But Trossard was fantastic, Adam Lallana the same. All the players were fantastic.’

Speaking about the win more generally, he added: ‘I am very happy for the players, the club and the people who work with the team.

And, of course, the great fans because they were the best players on the pitch – they helped us so much. The first 20-25 minutes we were fantastic, in how we played with and without the ball. We played with an intensity I liked.

‘I won’t be celebrating too much, because next Saturday is another game and I made a mistake because they made a tactical change and I didn’t adapt. But 4-1 against Chelsea is still an amazing result and I hope everyone enjoys it.’

Asked about the booing of Potter by Brighton’s supporters, he told BBC Sport: ‘No I don’t want to speak for this. I am sorry for these things. I don’t know the situation of the past and I don’t want to know.’

Brighton finally claimed its first win under their new manager against Chelsea. The Seagulls left the Blues shocked as they fought their way to a 4-1 victory to spoil Graham Potter’s return at Falmer Stadium on Saturday.

Graham Potter’s return to Brighton ended in disaster as Chelsea lost their first game under his leadership, losing 4-1 at the Amex Stadium.

It was a first half worthy of Halloween weekend as a litany of errors saw the Blues deservedly 3-0 down at the break.

Brighton put pressure on Chelsea early and took the lead after five minutes. Leandro Trossard was in close proximity when Thiago Silva’s terrible pass, which wasn’t the first he had made in the game, bounced off of him.

It landed into Premier League debutant Kaoru Mitoma, who drove into the area and skipped over the Chelsea shirts before finding Trossard.

For his fifth goal under the new manager, Roberto De Zerbi, the Brighton attacker then hoisted the ball over the approaching Kepa Arrizabalaga. Additionally, it was the first time the Seagulls had ever led Chelsea in a Premier League match.

Chelsea continued to be the architects of their own demise nine minutes later when Brighton scored their second goal. In a flurry of corners, Solly March delivered a fine effort which a rooted Ruben Loftus-Cheek turned into his own net.

The third goal for Brighton was also an own goal. Pervis Estupinian was beautifully connected to by Moises Caciedo down the left side of the area, and his cross into the six-yard box was converted by Trevoh Chalobah with his outstretched foot (42), leaving Potter in the opposing dugout appalled.

Early in the second half, Chelsea scored to give them the exact answer they needed. Kai Havertz nodded Conor Gallagher’s wonderful, sweeping cross into the goal (48).

Despite Chelsea’s dominance in the second half, Brighton added a late fourth goal to give Pascal Gross 50 goals for the team. To cap off a successful afternoon for the Seagulls, Gross was there to smash the ball home (90+2) after Julio Enciso forced two saves from second-half substitute Edouard Mendy.

The result marked the first time Brighton has beaten Chelsea in league football, as well as De Zerbi’s first win as Seagulls manager. It sends Brighton into seventh with 18 points.

However, Chelsea stays in fifth ahead of the remaining games this weekend.

Professional French footballer N’Golo Kante has returned to Chelsea football training ahead of their match against Crystal Palace. This is a boost for Graham Potter.

N’Golo Kante hasn’t played since Chelsea’s match against Tottenham Hotspur in the second game of the season, but he could this weekend against Crystal Palace.

Prior to Chelsea’s weekend match against Crystal Palace, Kante accelerated his return to fitness and participated in a Graham Potter training session for the first time.

The French international featured in Chelsea’s opening two matches of the season but picked up a hamstring injury against Tottenham and has missed the six games since.

The day after Chelsea’s first team players who weren’t on international duty returned to Cobham to start their training, Kante made his debut. Several academy prospects worked out with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Trevoh Chalobah, Edouard Mendy, Kepa Arrizabalaga, and Marcus Bettinelli under Potter’s watchful eye.

It will be welcome news for the Blues as Kante nears his full return ahead of an October where Chelsea has nine matches to play in a month that could set the tone for the season.

The France international has only returned to ‘part training’ however so still has work to do before making his first start under a new head coach.
