Controversial Nigerian artist, Habeeb Okikiola aka Portable, has disclosed that he turned down a request to perform at Bola Tinubu’s pre-inauguration celebration.

For the performance, which took place on Thursday, May 25, 2023, no fewer than 46 musicians were engaged.

According to Portable, he was one of those invited but declined since the organizers intended to take advantage of him.

He stated that the Inauguration management team told him he would only receive N5 million, despite the fact that they told him the budget for artists was N10 million per head.

The Zazuu star claimed that because it enraged him, he declined the invitation, tore up the offer, and blocked the caller’s number.

Naira Marley, Waje, Brymo, Asake, Fireboy, Kcee, Timaya, BNXN, Pasuma, Tony Tetuila, and Seyi Vibes are just a few of the artists who gave performances.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) youths organized the ‘RenewedHopeConcert’ to commemorate the contribution of young people during the general elections.

Speaking about the situation, he criticized the performers who agreed to attend the event at the MKO Abiola National Stadium in Abuja to entertain guests.

Portable asked as to if any of the musicians who took the money loved Tinubu. He next asked them if they had ever advocated for or supported the president-elect before, during, or after the election.

He said; “Na so dem call my manager say make I come perform for Abuja, say na N10 million dey drop oh, but na N5 million go reach portable hand. Na so I no gree, I tear the paper, I delete their number. No be me be star? Na im make me no perform for Abuja oh!”

Mp3bullet.ng presents Nigerian artists who have lost elections.

The day when only full-time politicians, retired generals, and businessmen could participate in Nigerian politics is long past.

Celebrities from Nigeria are now leaving the entertainment industry to participate actively in politics in their nation.

Several Nigerian celebrities have seized the reins of leadership to usher in change and progress in the nation in an effort to appease the cries of the youth for political engagement and inclusion.

Several people have praised these actors, entertainers, and musicians for their daring and boldness in offering to serve as Nigeria’s leaders, despite claims that they lacked the necessary expertise.

However, despite the passion and zeal, some are yet to win the elections they are contesting for.

He ran for the same position again in 2023 but lost to Labour Party candidate Thadeus Attah.

These Nigerian music groups caused a lot of heartbreaks for fans after they disbanded and went their separate way.

There was a time in the industry that music groups were dominating the industry and changing the landscape of the music scene.

However, as the music industry became to evolve so did personal interests causing a lot of groups to dissolve and go their separate ways.

We are unable to avoid recalling beloved musical bands whose dissolution crushed hearts across the nation.

Here are 10 musical groups—ranging from Mo’hits to TrybesMen—that we miss and would dearly like to see reunited:

Nigeria lost one of the best music collectives in history in 2012 when co-founder and producer Don Jazzy announced their breakup on social media after nearly ten years in the business.

Everyone broke apart from the organisation, blaming each other and citing irreconcilable differences as the reason for its dissolution.

Fans will never again hear club bangers from the Don Jazzy, D’banj, Ikechukwu, Wandecoal, Kayswitch, and Dr. SID collective, who won their hearts with their outstanding performances.

They had some of the best songs ever, including You Bad, Booty Call, Pere, Be Close To You, and Ten Ten.

The group had a brief comeback when they performed together for the first time since the split on 27 December 2017 at Davido’s show tagged “30Billion Concert.”

Plantashun Boiz

Plantashun Boiz

Innocent Idibia (2Baba), Chibuzor Oji (Faze), and Ahmedu Augustine Obiano (Black Faze) formed Plantashun Boiz, a powerful trio in the music industry.

This R&B/Hip-hop boy band was one of the most well-known musical acts of the decade.

Three outstanding guys who emerged as the leading voices of the new school were introduced to a generation of young music enthusiasts through the songs they wrote, which mixed elements of pop, rap, and reggae.

The band released three albums together and is well known for songs like Say You Believe Me, You and I, and Plantashun Boiz.

Their songs sold out like wildfire. They topped charts across the country, diverted attention from the dominant old genres, and used the Nigerian pop sound to get unprecedented amounts of airplay on radio stations, practically serving as a model for how to make the music as commercially sustainable as possible.

However, the trio disbanded in 2004 when 2Baba decided to pursue a solo career. His iconic solo debut album, Face2Face, featured the hit song African Queen, which served as the catalyst for his rise to prominence as one of Africa’s top entertainers.

While Black faze switched from R&B to reggae music, which also helped him get a lot of street respect and love, Faze released his debut album, Faze Alone, which went on to sell 1.2 million copies.

Regardless of their individual success, we would still love to see them together.

Styl-Plus

Shifi Emoefe, Tunde Akinsanmi, Yemi Akinwonmi, and Lanre Faneyi were the founding members; STYL is an acronym for their first names.

When Lanre Faneyi passed away in 1998, Zeal Onyechem took over and altered the group’s name to Styl-Plus, with the “Plus” signifying the new member.

However, Yemi Akinwonmi quit the group in 2002, leaving Shifi Omoefe, Zeal Onyecheme, and Tunde Akinsanmi as a trio.

They were responsible for the number-one songs Olufunmi, Runaway, Iya Basira, and Imagine dat.

Styl-plus officially split up soon after the release of the song “Four years dun waka,” and Tunde went on to seek a solo career.

As die-hard fans, we still long for the musical group that stole our hearts in the early 2000s.

Remedies

The Remedies

The Remedies, which consisted of Tony Tetuila, Eedris Abdulkareem, and Eddie Remedy, were extremely well-known in the 1990s thanks to their popular songs Shakomo and Omoge.

They even had a contract with Kennis Music, the largest record company in Nigeria at the time.

Due to insurmountable differences, the group broke up.

While Eedris Abdulkareem continued to be in the public eye with songs like Oko Omoge, Mr Lecturer, and Jaga Jaga, Tetuila rose to fame with songs like Omode Meta, Morning Time, Hit My Car, and My Heart Go Jigijigi. Eddy Remedy has been out in the public eye for some time.

Maintain

Popularly referred to as “The Boys from Ibadan,” Olu Maintain, Tolu, and Big Bamo dominated the Nigerian music industry with hits like “I Catch Cold” and “Nibo la wa gbe lo.”

Olu Maintain went on to release Yahooze after the trio disbanded in 2005. While Tolu concentrated on his work as a banker, Big Bamo released Fi jo ko wo je and Popotiti.

TrybesMen

They are sometimes referred to as Da Trybe and are frequently referred to as “one of the pioneers of hip hop in Nigeria.”

eLDee, Kaboom, and Freestyle—the group’s founding three members—met in 1994. In 1999, they published L.A.G Style Volume 1, which received positive reviews. Trybal Marks and Shake Bodi were among their hits.

After the group disbanded, eLDee and Freestyle each released a solo album.

They only released one album after the departure of Kehinde Akinbode, now known as K’ore, who later admitted that members of the gospel group were not practising what they preached.

Mp3bullet is out with a list of the popular Nigerian record label owners that are not musicians.

There has been a wide array of beliefs that most record label owners are either singers or producers. This is not true, as there are some people who are strictly entrepreneurs and take this music thing as a core business.

Some of these people don’t even have an idea of what it takes to mix and master a song, nor tactically vocalize a beat, however, they are skilled in making profits off this music business.

Kennis Music – Kenny Ogungbe

Nigerian Artists may be innocent of some things, not just Copyright Infringement as some of them constantly find themselves being accused of stealing other people’s work.

Plagiarism has almost completely taken over the music industry, as artists see copying other people’s intellectual property as no big problem. Some argue that it is inescapable because a piano has only so many notes and a guitar has only so many chord configurations.

Others, on the other hand, will swear blind that stealing, ripping, robbing, and snatching a riff, melody, or tone from another artist’s music is categorically unacceptable.

In this article, Mp3bullet.ng highlights well-known artists whose identities have been dragged through the mud after being accused of Copyright Infringement.

Wizkid vs Tony Tetulia

Wizkid, a Nigerian music sensation, is on this list after being accused of song theft years ago. Wizkid was hit with a 30 million Naira lawsuit by renowned singer Tony Tetuila in December 2019. Wizkid and DJ Tunez allegedly copied content from Tony’s “Fefe N’efe” music and used it in their “Gbese” single, according to the lawsuit.

2Baba vs Blackface

This was the biggest of all song theft cases in Nigerian music history.

Former Plantashun Boiz members 2face and Blackface have been at odds for a long time over copyright problems. The immensely hit ‘African Queen,’ for which 2face received fame, is said to have been composed by Blackface. However, 2face later paid Blackface royalties from the song.

Blackface later accused 2Baba again of also denying him credit in the song ‘Let Somebody Love You’ which they both wrote together in their days as Plantashun Boiz. 2face later featured American singer, Bridget Kelly in the song, and included it in his The Ascension album.

Tiwa Savage vs Danny Young

In 2019, Danny Young filed a N200 million copyright suit against Savage for her 2018 song, ‘One’, which he claimed she copied from his 2009 single, “Oju Tiwon”.

In the suit, he sought a declaration that by copying, performing, and distributing literary work and music lyrics authored and owned by him without lawful authority, the defendants have infringed on his copyright.

Later that same year, in an update to the story, Danny Young revealed that they have settled out of court. He made this known on his Instagram page.

Davido vs Password

Davido, the Omo Baba Olowo singer, was accused of copyright infringement in 2013 by an up-and-coming artist, Password, who claimed he stole the premise and lyrics of the song “Gobe.”

According to reports, Password had initially released Gobe in 2011 but didn’t make a hit. It was later reported that Davido bought the song from Password for 500 thousand Naira.

Mr. P of P-square v Henry Knight

In 2018, an upcoming singer, Henry Knight via his Instagram page posted a message accusing Peter Okoye of plagiarizing and duplicating his song without giving proper credit.

Henry Knight accused Peter Okoye (Mr. P) of lifting content from his song, Ebeano, without proper credit.

The musician vented his frustrations on Instagram, blaming major artists of hindering the development of up-and-coming artists.

Henry Knight played both songs side by side with his lengthy caption to expose Mr. P’s apparent attempt to duplicate his hook (chorus). Mr. P, on the other hand, never mentioned the incident in public. It’s supposed that they’ve worked out their differences in private.

Simi, Jaywon vs Victor Uwaifo

In November 2017, legendary artist and one-time Commissioner for Arts and Culture in Edo State, Sir Victor Uwaifo, accused Jaywon and Simi of remixing his song “Joromi” without his consent.

In an interview with Vanguard, Sir Victor Uwaifo stated that he would prefer not to take both of them to court for not getting permission from him before remixing the song as the original composer, but that he wishes they had done the right thing.

The legendary singer later sued Simi at the federal high court for N50 million. They must have settled in private because nothing was heard ever again of the issue.

Timi Dakolo vs Majek Fashek

in July 2016, Majek Fashek threatened to sue Timi Dakolo for remaking his song titled ‘Send Down The Rain’ in 2013 without his permission.

The iconic reggae singer told Punch Newspaper that The Voice Nigeria judge Timi Dakolo infringed on his copyright law by stealing his legendary classic Send Down the Rain song in 2013.

He called him a sub-par artiste and compared him to his peers, fellow The Voice Nigeria coach 2Baba, Wizkid and Olamide.

“I felt bad when I learnt that he worked on my song without my consent. He did not even give me credit. He is a very bad artiste and he took advantage of the circumstance that I was facing during that time. The song is not a normal song; it is a spiritual hit song. Timi Dakolo does not know how I suffered to get that song. I fasted for seven days before I got that song. I partook in three days ‘white’ fasting before the song came to me. Timi Dakolo did not go through that. I did not fight him because I do not have time. Let God judge us,” he said.

Timi Dakolo responded to the allegations on his Instagram page, saying he rightfully paid Majek’s manager for the rights to remake the song, and he even has the receipts to prove it.

“MY PEOPLE IT TRULY SADDENS ME TO SEE SUCH… I ALWAYS TRY TO DO THINGS RIGHTLY AND LAWFULLY… I PAID HIS MANAGER TO REMAKE THE SONG,I GOT MY INVOICE…I EVEN MENTIONED TO HIM DURING OUR REHEARSALS AT THE HEADIES.. SO HONESTLY I DONT UNDERSTAND THIS WRITE UP… OGA MAJEK FASHEK..I RESPECT AND LOVE YOU…YOUR VOICE GIVES LIFE TO LYRICS… YOU ARE ONE OF THE BEST MUSICIANS I KNOW..GOD BLESS YOU..”

Tekno vs Danfo Drivers

In 2018, The pair of Mountain Black and Mad Melon (real names Jimoh Olotu and Omeofa Oghene respectively), of the ‘Danfo Drivers’ fame accused producer and artiste, Tekno of sampling one of their songs without permission.

In an interview with Wazobia TV, the duo said that Tekno’s song titled ‘Jogodo’ is a sample of their 2008 song titled ‘Kpolongo’.

They also said during the interview that they came to Lagos to hunt for Tekno and collect the money/royalties he owes them for sampling their song without permission.

However, days later, a high-powered meeting was set up at the residence of a successful socialite and entrepreneur where the issue was said to have been resolved.

A source, who was at the meeting revealed that Tekno known for his peaceful nature apologised to the ‘Danfo Drivers’ and gave them a substantial amount of money as compensation.

Kcee vs Jude Nnam

In 2021, the social media was agog with the news of a court case instituted against ‘Limpopo’ crooner and Five Stars records artiste, Kingsley Chinweike Okonkwo better known as Kcee, over alleged copyright infringement of ‘Som Too Chukwu’, a 2001 track by Jude Nnam, Nigerian music composer and performer.

While Most Nigerian Artists have had to struggle with many challenges, some others have to surpass the obstacle of their disability to make it in the Industry.

There’s an old saying that goes “disability is never inability.” There have been numerous examples of persons born with disabilities rising to the top and succeeding in life.

Some people wind up begging on the streets because of their disabilities. Others give up on themselves because they are unable to integrate into society.

While the breakups of these music groups had impacts on the industry and their fans, the members of these groups still found a way to make lemonades out of lemons.

Here are some of the top Nigerian Artists who became successful solo acts after leaving their group;

Known as Paul Okoye, Rudeboy was the one half of the renowned music duo, P-square. Alongside his brother Peter Okoye, they ruled airwaves for almost a decade with their groovy and love-themed songs that had many African households on a chokehold.

While a lot of many Nigerian music groups were breaking up, many didn’t expect P-square to break up as they were literally twin brothers but alas they did.

What started a slight family misunderstanding festered into something huge that end up posting the Nigerian Music Industry their beloved music group.

This separation between the two brothers had many wondering what the next step would be for them but Rudeboy didn’t hesitate in launching out solo with “Fire Fire” and “Nkenji Keke.”

Despite the bitter taste left on many of P-square’s fans’ tongues, this didn’t stop people from accepting his songs.

While the singer has released several hits over the years, his biggest is “Reason with Me” which broke a P-square record on youtube after amassing over 122M views on the streaming platform.

In 2021, he released his debut solo album, “RudyKillus” which has received mixed reactions from fans is doing considerably well on streaming platforms.

Formerly known as 2face Idibia, 2Baba first came to the limelight as a member of the R’n’B group, Plantashun Boiz which dominated the industry in the early 2000s with hits and two successful albums: Body and Soul (2000) and Sold Out (2003).

However, in 2004, 2baba left the group to pursue a solo career under Kennis Music where he released his debut solo album Face 2 Face (2004), which established him as a viable solo artist.

His popularity skyrocket with the release of his second album, “Grass to Grace“.

There was a point when Eedris Abdulkareem was one of the Nigerian Hip-Hop major contenders. From 1997 to 2002, he was part of the popular hip-hop band The Remedies alongside Tony Tetuila and Eddy Remedy.

The Remedies were popular for their hits like “Shakamo” and “Omoge” which endeared them to millions of people all over West Africa.

The group split up in 1999 when Eedris Abdulkareem who was the henchman of the crew decided to launch a solo career.

Eedris Abdulkareem’s solo career started off to a glistening start with the release of 3 successful albums with the Kennis Music label imprint between 2002 and 2004.

His solo career was blessed with iconic songs like “Jaga Jaga” which earned him the ire of the Nigerian Government, “Mr Lecturer“, Oko Achewo” among others.

His fortunes however took a downturn in 2004 after a fracas with the American rapper 50 Cent. His subsequent album “King is Back” was released in 2007 under his La Crème record label and he is still has a visible presence on the Naija music scene.

These are the top 10 states in Nigeria that produce the best musician according to the number of mainstream artists they produce in the space of popular music.

Nigeria is officially the Federal Republic of Nigeria, is a country in West Africa, and here are the top 10 states in Nigeria that produce the best musician.

It is the most populous country in Africa and in Sub-Saharan Africa before South Africa, Kenya, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Ethiopia; geographically situated between the Sahel to the north, and the Gulf of Guinea to the south in the Atlantic Ocean; covering an area of 923,769 kilometers (574,003 mi), with a population of over 211 million.

Nigeria Flag

Opinion

First and foremost, to be able to analyze the top 10 states in Nigeria that produce the best music, it has to be regionalized and refined by the number of mainstream artists in the Nigerian music industry produced by the state.

Shout out to another genre of traditional music and instrumentation, but then, this post revolves around mainstream contemporaries.

So! which region in Nigeria produces the best musicians? I’m from the Southeast, and as much as I love our beloved Chief Osita Osadebe, I have to say those Yoruba artists have been giving everyone else a run for their money for way too long

If we’re talking of contemporary Naija music in genres like hip-hop, rap, and R&B, it is an understatement to say the Southwest part of Naija top the chart of quality musical artists but, to be more precise, the Middle-belt region with states like Benue, Plateau, Nassarawa and the FCT, in particular, are also inclusive, Southeast holds very tight too.

In summary, Nigerians are great talented people!

When you look back on Terry G’s career, you’ll see one major blunder: putting Mallam Spicey to the test with the lyric “me I no be Mallam Spicey, Me I no dey stop for the fourth bar over.”

in response, Mallam Spicey dropped one of the hottest and most blatant diss tunes ever in Nigeria on Terry G.

If you are surprised to see this song on this list, then you haven’t listened to the lyrics.
The song was a hit, not just because of its beat but because of its lyrics. Certain lyrics like “Tell odogwu say we like to party” suggested that the song was a medium to throw shots at Burna Boy who he allegedly had issues with.

Furthermore, the song would go on to be a protest anthem during the revolutionary 2020 #Endsars protests where protesters used it to hush Government Officials trying to talk to them.

Ruggedman exploded onto the scene with no regard for anyone’s face, and it showed in his epic diss tune, “Ehen!”.

He came out swinging for the industry’s prominent stars at the time. Eedris Abdulkareem, Maintain, and Rasqui were all impacted by what Ruggedy Baba was dishing out.

Kelly Hansome was a known troublemaker and hitmaker in 2009-10, Picking beef with any and everyone once upon a time.

He’s dissed Kennis Music, MI, Ice Prince, and Jesse Jagz, but none of those diss singles compares to “Igwe (Kom Kom)”, a masterpiece he created to diss Don Jazzy, Dbanj, Wande Coal (Mo-Hits at the time), and Terry G.

The song is still one of the funniest jabs at a whole record label in Nigerian history. Thrown in the hilarious makeshift animation video, and we have something that will always be remembered for years to come.

M.I’s reaction wasn’t a natural one. Instead, as the astute businessman that he is, he responded to both of them, as well as a slew of others, in his song Beef, which was released alongside his album MI2.

9ice ft Seriki- Talk I am Listening

Ruggedman has been the subject of a number of diss songs, and it’s easy to see why.

There was controversy in 2010 between Ruggedman, 9ice, and Toni Payne (9ice’s wife at the time), which resulted in a leaked conversation, a barrage of accusations, and a slew of diss recordings.

But, of all the diss songs that have been released, this one has taken the cake.

With the help of Seriki, 9ice fully reversed the script on Ruggedman (his one-time mentor). It helped expose Seriki to the Nigerian hip-hop scene in certain ways.

Ruggedman eventually replied to the diss with “A Word Is Enuff For The 9ice” before the two went on to settle their differences and collaborate on several songs.

Here, we present five of the finest songs artists from Ghana and Nigeria have made for our ever-grateful ears.

2Baba – My Love (feat. VIP) (2006)

Legendary Nigerian artist 2Baba in 2006 tapped the Ghanaian Hiplife group, VIP, for a love song.

2Baba

Inspired by old Jamaican folk song, it was however popularized by Harry Belafonte’s “Jamaican Farewell”.

2face’s effort, which was a major crossover hit in its day, featured in his classic Grass 2 Grace album.

VvIP

A playful number, the song features an Afro-Caribbean vibe that perfectly fits beside the love-professing lyrics.

Tony Tetuila – 2 Women (feat. VIP) (2006)

A playful song, “2 Women” is off the former Remedies’ man Tony Tetuila’s 2006 album, Free Soldier.

The 5 nostalgic Nigeria-Ghana collaborations ever

The song details Tony’s indecision when it comes to women and for the trio of VIP guests, rather than aiding a friend to choose, they infuse their playful elements of Hiplife, making the song a loose declaration that shoots at nothing in particular, but fun.

R2Bees – Kiss Your Hand (feat. Wande Coal) (2009)

At the peak of his powers, Nigerian vocal powerhouse Wande Coal released his magnum opus Mushin to Mohits.

“Kiss Your Hand”, his collaboration with Ghanaian group R2Bees features parts of that freestyle; the official song itself, features energetic proclamations of love from the trio, with Wande Coal’s lyrics being the icing on the cake.

In a lengthy Instagram post, Veteran Singer, Paul Play Dairo has addressed his colleagues in the entertainment industry over their selfish nature.

Paul Play Dairo Slams Fellow Celebrities for Not Supporting Each Other

Paul Play explained that since he returned to the scene, he has noticed how hard it is for celebrities to show support for each other.

Despite the fact that it costs them nothing, most music stars, according to him, find it difficult to promote one other’s work on social media platforms.

Most people, according to the singer, only express support for their colleagues after they have died. He claims that it is the only time they are able to share images and even hold memorial services for the deceased.

Paul Play made a reference to the days when Style Plus, Ruggedman, and others ruled the scene in a different section of his piece. Despite being in competition, he stated they still supported each other.

The artist then went on to counsel the current generation of celebrities to remain humble.

It’s like they PREFER TO HELP U WHEN YOURE DEAD . 0post your picture and organize sbows to celebrate your passing. HOW MANY PEOPLE WERE THERE FOR THE CELEBRITIES WHO PASSED when they were alive ?
