The England head coach revealed that Palmer’s recent struggles with form and consistency played a major role in the decision, especially after the midfielder returned from injury earlier in the season.

According to Tuchel, the Chelsea star was unable to reach the same level of influence and decisiveness he displayed in previous campaigns, while competition for his preferred attacking midfield role was also extremely strong.

“Cole Palmer wasn’t as decisive as previous seasons, he wasn’t available for us a lot and wasn’t decisive.”

Tuchel also explained that the coaching staff ultimately preferred other players operating in similar positions, highlighting the performances of several attacking midfielders who impressed more consistently throughout the season and during England camps.

“He also competes in the right half 10 position, where we decided for Jude, Morgan and Ebs who are outstanding players, had better season and more decisive in our camps than Cole.”

Palmer’s omission has become one of the biggest talking points surrounding England’s final World Cup squad, with many fans surprised to see the talented midfielder miss out despite his strong reputation and recent rise in English football.

Aside from Palmer, Tuchel also left out several other notable names, including Harry Maguire, Phil Foden, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Luke Shaw, Jarrod Bowen, Fikayo Tomori, Morgan Gibbs-White, Lewis Hall, Adam Wharton, and Alex Scott.

England are set to face Ghana national football team, Croatia national football team, and Panama national football team during the tournament as they continue their quest to win a first World Cup title since 1966.

Foden found it difficult to make an impact while playing in an unfamiliar attacking role during England’s 1-0 friendly loss to the Japan national football team on Tuesday, particularly in the absence of Harry Kane.

Despite starting the season brightly, the 25-year-old has also seen limited game time under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City in recent weeks, which Tuchel believes has affected his sharpness on the pitch.

“He tried everything. I would say he was excellent in camp but, yeah, he struggles to show it on the pitch,” Tuchel said. “He came into camp with the brightest energy and trained very well, but he hasn’t been able to translate that into performances during matches.”

Foden has often struggled to replicate his club form at international level, including during England’s run to the Euro 2024 final, where expectations were high following his standout performances for Manchester City.

Competition for attacking midfield roles remains fierce, with players like Jude Bellingham, Cole Palmer, and Morgan Rogers all pushing for places in the squad. Tuchel acknowledged the challenge, stating that selection decisions will be based strictly on form and impact.

“It’s not a guarantee that he will come,” Tuchel added when asked about including underperforming players in the squad for the tournament in North America.

The defeat to Japan marked only Tuchel’s second loss in 12 games as England boss. However, his side is still searching for a statement victory, having yet to beat a team ranked in FIFA’s top 20 during his tenure.

Following a 1-1 draw against Uruguay national football team last week, Tuchel remained optimistic about England’s chances of ending their long wait for a major trophy since 1966.

“We will not let go of our dream, we will not let go of the question ‘why not?’” he said. “Right now, the focus is on players finishing the season strongly with their clubs before regrouping to prepare properly.”

Tuchel, who took over in January 2025, has made an immediate impact. He guided the Three Lions through a flawless World Cup qualifying campaign, topping Group K with eight wins from eight matches, scoring 22 goals and conceding none.

That dominant run has positioned England among the favourites heading into this year’s World Cup.

Speaking after signing the new deal, Tuchel expressed pride in continuing the journey.

“I am very happy and proud to extend my time with England. It is no secret to anyone that I have loved every minute so far of working with my players and coaches, and I cannot wait to lead them to the World Cup. It is an incredible opportunity, and we are going to do our very best to make the country proud.

“I have had so much support from Mark (Bullingham, CEO), all my colleagues at The FA and from fans wherever I go that I did not hesitate when asked to continue in this dream job. EURO 2028 will be a very special tournament, and as a coach, there is nothing more you want than to compete with the very best on the biggest possible stage.”

His backroom team, Anthony Barry, Henrique Hilario, Nico Mayer, and James Melbourne, have also committed their futures, agreeing to extensions that will keep them in place for the next two years.

Tuchel’s tenure has largely been impressive. Although England initially showed signs of adjusting to his methods, they quickly found rhythm, highlighted by emphatic 5-0 victories over Serbia away from home and Latvia. The only notable setback so far came in the summer, when a rotated squad suffered a 3-1 defeat to AFCON champions Senegal at the City Ground.

FA chief executive Mark Bullingham welcomed the extension, praising Tuchel’s influence on and off the pitch.

“I am delighted Thomas has committed to stay with us through to the Euros in 2028. He was the right person for the job when he joined us for the World Cup campaign, and he has only strengthened his reputation across the qualifiers. We know the players are right behind him, and the togetherness within the group is there for all to see.

“There is simply no better candidate available in world football. With his big-game experience, knowledge and passion, he gives the squad the very best chance for success – this summer and with the once-in-a-generation EURO being hosted on these shores in two years’ time.

“In Thomas, Anthony and the wider team, we have a perfect blend of English coaching and international expertise. Their full focus remains on doing as well as possible this summer, and by securing them early for 2028, we have taken away the potential distraction of contract renegotiations around the tournament.”

As preparations continue, England will fine-tune their World Cup build-up with warm-up matches against New Zealand and Costa Rica in Florida this June. During next month’s international break, they are also scheduled to face Uruguay and Japan in friendly fixtures.

With stability secured on the touchline, England now turn their focus toward delivering on growing expectations first at the World Cup, and then on home soil at EURO 2028.

Newly appointed England head coach Thomas Tuchel has made a strong impression with his first squad selection ahead of the March 2025 international break.

The German tactician, known for his tactical acumen and ability to reshape teams, has introduced fresh faces while also recalling experienced names as he prepares for his debut match in charge.

Among the notable inclusions, Arsenal’s Myles Lewis-Skelly and Newcastle’s Dan Burn have received their maiden call-ups to the senior national team.

Meanwhile, seasoned veterans Jordan Henderson and Kyle Walker have been brought back into the fold, with Marcus Rashford also earning another opportunity at international level.

However, Tuchel’s selection raised eyebrows with the omission of key players such as James Maddison, Jack Grealish, Morgan Gibbs-White, Angel Gomes, Adam Wharton, and Harry Maguire.

Thomas Tuchel has expressed his determination to “make England successful and the supporters proud” following his appointment as the new manager of the national team.

The Football Association (FA) announced his hiring on Wednesday, although Tuchel officially signed his contract on October 8. He will take charge of the Three Lions starting in January 2025, under an 18-month deal.

Tuchel will succeed interim manager Lee Carsley, who will lead England in upcoming international matches against Greece and the Republic of Ireland before returning to his role with the Under-21 team.

Bringing a wealth of experience, Tuchel has a notable track record that includes winning the UEFA Champions League, three domestic league titles, and the Best FIFA Men’s Coach Award in 2021.

In his initial remarks after the announcement, Tuchel expressed excitement for the role and outlined his ambitions for the team during his tenure.

“I am very proud to have been given the honour of leading the England team. I have long felt a personal connection to the game in this country, and it has given me some incredible moments already,” said Tuchel.

“To have the chance to represent England is a huge privilege, and the opportunity to work with this special and talented group of players is very exciting.

“Working closely with Anthony as my assistant coach, we will do everything we can to make England successful and the supporters proud. I want to thank the FA, in particular Mark and John, for their trust and I am looking forward to starting our journey together.”

Tuchel’s previous assistant at Bayern Munich, Anthony Barry, will also join the Three Lions as an assistant coach.

Reacting after his appointment was officially confirmed, he said: “For any Englishman in football, working with the national team is the pinnacle and I didn’t hesitate when Thomas asked me to come and join him again.

“I know what a great place St. George’s Park is and how much of an advantage it gives our England teams, and the support it gives to coaches. This squad is very talented and have done so much to bring the country together, I look forward to meeting and working with them on this exciting project.”

England have officially appointed Thomas Tuchel as their new permanent manager, following recent talks between the former Chelsea and Bayern Munich coach and the English FA.

Tuchel agreed to an 18-month contract, starting in January 2025, which will see him lead the national team through to the end of the 2026 World Cup.

Tuchel’s appointment makes him the first German and third foreign manager to take charge of the England men’s national team, following in the footsteps of Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello.

His track record of success at major European clubs, including winning the Champions League with Chelsea, was a key factor in the FA’s decision to pursue him.

Despite reported interest from Manchester United and AC Milan, England moved swiftly to secure Tuchel’s services.

His existing relationship with England captain Harry Kane, whom he brought to Bayern Munich, and his familiarity with many of the national team’s top players from his time at Chelsea were seen as added advantages for the role.

Tuchel’s appointment ends speculation over Gareth Southgate’s replacement, providing the team with a high-profile manager ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Speaking about the decision to hire Tuchel, FA CEO Mark Bullingham said: “We are thrilled to have hired Thomas Tuchel, one of the best coaches in the world and Anthony Barry who is one of the best English coaches to support him. Our recruitment process has been very thorough.

“Before the EUROs we had a contingency plan and outlined exactly the qualities we would be looking for in a coach. Since Gareth resigned, we have worked through the candidate pool, meeting a number of coaches and evaluating them against that criteria. Thomas was very impressive and stood out with his vast expertise and his drive. Anthony is a top English talent and also has international experience with Republic of Ireland, Belgium and Portugal.

“Fundamentally we wanted to hire a coaching team to give us the best possible chance of winning a major tournament, and we believe they will do just that. Thomas and the team have a single-minded focus on giving us the best possible chance to win the World Cup in 2026.

“I would like to thank Lee for stepping up and doing everything we asked of him – he is a very talented coach and a major part of our England pathway. He will now focus on retaining the U21 EURO title in the summer. These are exciting times for England fans at senior and MU21 level, and we look forward to welcoming Thomas and Anthony when they begin work in January.”

Lee Carsley will oversee England’s internationals in November before returning to his role as Under-21 manager.

The Bundesliga giants had been searching for a new manager since agreeing to part ways with Thomas Tuchel at the end of the 2023/24 season in February. Despite being linked with former managers Julian Nagelsmann and Hansi Flick, as well as Ralf Rangnick, Bayern failed to reach agreements with any of them. Talks of potentially retaining Tuchel were dismissed by club chiefs.

After considering other options like Erik ten Hag, Thomas Frank, and Roberto De Zerbi, Bayern settled on Burnley boss Kompany.

In his statement to Bayern channels, Kompany expressed his excitement for the challenge, calling it a great honor to work for the club. He emphasized his coaching philosophy, highlighting the importance of creativity, aggression, and courage on the pitch. Kompany also expressed eagerness to work with the players and build a successful team.

Kompany said: “I’m looking forward to the challenge of FC Bayern. It’s a great honour to be able to work for this club – FC Bayern is an institution in international football. As a coach, you have to stand for who you are as a person: I love having the ball, being creative – and we also have to be aggressive on the pitch and courageous. I’m now looking forward to the most basic things: working with the players, building a team. When the foundation is in place, success will follow.”

Max Eberl: “We are delighted that we have signed Vincent Kompany for FC Bayern. In our talks with him, we were immediately on the same page. He made it clear to us how much the job at FC Bayern appeals to him and that he absolutely wants to take it on. Vincent Kompany is hungry and has everything he needs: Even as a player, he was a leading figure in top international football and is also making progress as a coach. We would like to see more continuity in this position. Together with him, we want to achieve a lot at FC Bayern – and of course be successful together.”

Kompany led Burnley to the Championship title in 2022/23 with attractive possession football. However, his young side struggled in the Premier League, resulting in relegation back to the second tier.

Prior to managing Burnley, Kompany spent time in charge of Anderlecht, both as a manager and player-coach. With a win percentage of 43.23%, he has overseen 83 wins, 58 draws, and 51 losses across 192 games in management.

Kompany faces a significant task at Bayern, as they finished third in the Bundesliga in the 2023/24 season behind Bayer Leverkusen and Stuttgart.

Thomas Tuchel showered Real Madrid’s Jude Bellingham with praise, emphasizing the need for Bayern Munich players to find ways to neutralize the talented Englishman.

The Bayern Munich manager commended Bellingham’s skill and lauded his seamless adaptation to the pressures of playing for a prestigious club like Real Madrid in his debut season. Tuchel acknowledged Bellingham’s impressive goal-scoring record in La Liga this season and expressed caution ahead of their encounter with the dynamic midfielder.

Speaking to reporters ahead of the Champions League semi-final first leg, the former Chelsea coach said, “Jude is extraordinary… He was fantastic here in the Bundesliga, how he progressed shows the level of personality he has, it’s only possible with a huge personality.

“Everyone who plays for Madrid plays with the pressure of the shirt. He plays with the pressure to play with this club and all the expectations. He handles it like he’s never done anything else. But we are well aware of it and will try and find solutions tomorrow (Tuesday).”

The Bavarian club has reached the semi-finals for the first time since the 2019/20 season, a campaign in which they ultimately clinched their sixth Champions League title. Meanwhile, the Spanish giants will be making their fourth consecutive appearance in the semi-final stage.

Tuchel’s team is poised to take on Carlo Ancelotti’s side in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final showdown on Tuesday at the Allianz Arena. Following this pivotal European clash, they will shift their focus to Bundesliga action against VFB Stuttgart on Saturday.

Bayern Munich has officially announced that Thomas Tuchel will depart from the club at the conclusion of the 2023/24 Bundesliga season.

Under Tuchel’s management, Bayern has struggled significantly this season, currently trailing by eight points in the Bundesliga title race and facing the imminent possibility of UEFA Champions League elimination after a recent 1-0 loss to SS Lazio.

Despite significant investments, including over €150 million spent on star players Harry Kane and Kim Min-jae during the summer transfer window, Bayern’s performance has failed to meet expectations, leading to Tuchel’s impending departure.

Speaking in a club statement announcing the news, club CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen said: “In a good, open discussion, we came to the decision to end our working relationship by mutual agreement in the summer.

“Our goal is to pursue a new footballing direction with a new head coach for the 2024/25 season. Until then, every individual at the club is expressly called upon to achieve the maximum possible in the Champions League and Bundesliga.

“I also explicitly hold the team accountable in this regard. In the Champions League in particular, after losing 1-0 in the first leg at Lazio, we are convinced we will reach the quarter-finals at a packed Allianz Arena with our fans behind us.”

Tuchel also commented on his impending exit, stating that he will continue to strive to achieve “maximum success” with the club from now until the end of the season: “We have agreed that we will end our working relationship at the end of this season,” said Tuchel.

“Until then, I will of course continue to do everything I can with my coaching staff to achieve maximum success.”

Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel has officially stated that the club has plans to bring in new players during the January transfer window. Tuchel emphasized the need for at least two additions to the squad or a versatile player capable of playing in multiple positions.

While expressing the team’s intention to strengthen, Tuchel acknowledged the potential challenges of securing quality signings in the January window. He stressed the importance of patience in the process of identifying and acquiring the right players to enhance the squad.

Speaking to reporters, the former Chelsea boss said, “We’re working on new signings. We will hopefully improve the squad in winter. It’s not going to be easy because the January window is always more difficult than the summer. But at the same time, we’ll trust the quality we have.

“Maybe we’ll need two new players, or if it’s someone that can play several positions, then maybe one would be enough if we are spared injuries. We know it’s difficult to get players in January. We will need patience and optimism.”

Bayern Munich is reportedly in close pursuit of Fulham midfielder Joao Palhinha in the upcoming January transfer window. The club had previously attempted to secure the services of the Portugal international during the summer transfer window.

However, the deal fell through on deadline day as Fulham withdrew at the last moment, unable to secure a replacement for the player.

Having recently extended the contract of Thomas Muller by an additional year, Bayern Munich is now assessing whether to further strengthen their attacking options to provide support for the in-form forward, Harry Kane. The decision on potential reinforcements for the attack is yet to be finalized.

On Friday, Bayern Munich finalized the free transfer of full-back Raphael Guerreiro from Borussia Dortmund.

The 29-year-old defender has decided to join the Bundesliga winners on a three-year contract after a seven-year stint with Borussia Dortmund.

A statement from the club read: FC Bayern have completed the signing of Raphaël Guerreiro. The Portugal international moves to the German record champions on a free transfer after leaving Borussia Dortmund. The versatile 29-year-old, who normally occupies the left flank, has put pen to paper on a contract until 30 June 2026.”

The Portuguese defender is set to reunite with Thomas Tuchel in Munich after six years. He had spent the 2016-17 season under the German coach’s tutelage at Dortmund.

After signing for Bayern, Guerreiro said, “When the call came from FC Bayern, I made my decision fast. It’s an honour for me to be able to play for this great club, and I also regard Thomas Tuchel highly from our time together at Dortmund. I’m a player who always wants the ball – it’s about controlling the game and I want to create chances. I’ll give my all so that we win as many titles as possible. That’s the philosophy of FC Bayern.”

More players are anticipated to join the German powerhouses this summer. Kyle Walker of Manchester City and Kim Min-Jae of Napoli have both been linked with a move to the Allianz Arena.
