Luis Diaz is set to make his long-anticipated injury comeback from injury for Liverpool against Manchester City this weekend.

The Colombian has been out since sustaining a knee injury in the loss to Arsenal in October, but he resumed full training at Kirkby on Tuesday. If there is no negative response, Diaz will travel with Jurgen Klopp’s squad to the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

The news will be a great boost for Klopp, whose team has a vital eight days to finish in the top four. The Reds play City on Saturday, then travel to Chelsea on Tuesday before hosting league-leading Arsenal on April 9.

Darwin Nunez is not expected to be fit for the weekend, despite the striker missing the most recent Uruguay team due to a leg ailment, according to Klopp. But Thiago Alcantara, a midfielder, is still out with an unidentified hip problem.

The Spaniard hasn’t played since the beginning of February, and Liverpool had anticipated that he would be out for up to four weeks. He hasn’t joined the team for training, so he likely won’t be available for another crucial stretch for Klopp’s club.

The Reds presently hold the sixth spot in the Premier League, seven points behind Tottenham in fourth place despite having two games in hand. Liverpool FC have announced teenage midfielder Stefan Bajcetic has signed a new long-term deal with the club.

The 18-year-old has played for the Reds’ first-team squad all season but recently has been given more playing time. He scored his first senior goal in the team’s 3-1 victory at Aston Villa and then participated for 82 minutes in the goalless draw with Chelsea.

Bajcetic, who rose through the ranks at Celta Vigo before transferring to England in late 2020, has now been given the opportunity as a result of the fitness problems of players like Thiago, Naby Keita, and Jordan Henderson.

He told Liverpool’s website: “Obviously I’m so, so happy, so excited to keep playing for this club and hopefully I can play more years together. Me and my family are very proud to sign a new contract with this club.

On his Under-18s debut in April 2021, Bajcetic played in central defence. He later switched to forward midfield before being called up to Jurgen Klopp’s senior squad for Liverpool’s preseason tour of Thailand and Singapore.

In addition to appearing as a substitute in three Champions League games this season, he made his Premier League debut in the 9-0 thrashing of Bournemouth.

Jurgen Klopp claims that Darwin Nunez and Thiago Alcantara sensed potential injuries during Wednesday night’s triumph over West Ham, but both are likely to be okay.

Nunez scored the game’s only goal as the Reds defeated the Hammers 1-0 in a tight match on Merseyside.

The Uruguayan striker was replaced 57 minutes into the game, though, replaced by Harvey Elliott, while Thiago was replaced by Fabinho a minute later.

Although Klopp acknowledges that both players experienced muscular discomfort during the game, the changes were safeguards, and both players should be fine to play against Nottingham Forest this weekend.

‘Thiago stretched once on the pitch which was, for me, a warning sign,’ Klopp told Amazon Prime after the win. ‘Meanwhile, we have to react to everything, so it was clear we had to change him.

‘Darwin at half time everyone said no it’s fine, it’s fine but when someone’s on the bed for five minutes [with a hamstring complaint], we’re concerned as well. It was a precaution. They are all okay. I think we picked them all [to come off] in the right moment.’

After defeating Manchester City on Sunday, Klopp’s team has now won two straight games, moving up to sixth in the standings.

Given that Diogo Jota, Luis Diaz, Joel Matip, Naby Keita, Ibrahima Konate, and Arthur Melo are all already out, Klopp will be relieved that neither Nunez nor Thiago is hurt.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain returned to the match-day squad on Wednesday, not coming off the bench, but the midfielder has returned from injury and will be an option for Klopp in a very busy period ahead of the World Cup.

Former Premier League referee, Dermott Gallagher has claimed Michael Oliver was not asked by Video Assistant Referee (VAR) to review his penalty decision during Arsenal’s 3-2 win over Liverpool, because his version of the foul did not differ from TV replays.

After a thrilling win at the Emirates on Sunday, Arsenal reclaimed first place in the Premier League.

Bukayo Saka’s second-half penalty sealed victory for the hosts after Thiago Alcantara was deemed to have fouled Gabriel Jesus.

The decision enraged Liverpool, who had their own penalty claim for Gabriel’s handball turned down in the first half.

“Because I think what would’ve happened when Michael made his decision, the VAR and referee would speak quickly and Michael would’ve said he’s convinced he hasn’t got the ball and caught him across the bottom of the ankle, and in his view it’s a penalty.

“VAR looks, you can see he doesn’t get the ball, he does catch him across the ankle, so there’s nothing to send him across to say it’s a clear and obvious error for me. The pictures do reinforce what he would say.”
