As the global music industry closed out 2025 on December 31, Forbes released its highly anticipated year-end ranking of the highest-paid musicians in the world, revealing a combined pre-tax income of nearly $1.9 billion USD among the top earners.

The staggering figure underscored a year of robust growth for the industry, powered largely by blockbuster concert tours, sustained streaming dominance, and increasingly sophisticated catalogue investments.

Live performances emerged as the biggest revenue driver, with artists capitalising on expansive stadium tours, high-demand residencies, and innovative touring models, while streaming and record sales continued to provide steady income for musicians with evergreen catalogues.

The list also reflected growing diversity across the industry, featuring eight female artists among the highest earners and spanning genres from pop, hip-hop, and R&B to country, Latin, and rock. Strategic business moves—particularly partial catalogue sales that preserved creative control—played a major role in boosting artist wealth, highlighting a shift toward sharper, more business-savvy career management.

The Weeknd Tops the List as World’s Highest-Paid Musician

At the summit of the 2025 rankings sits The Weeknd, who emerged as the highest-paid musician in the world, earning $298 million USD pre-tax. His earnings were anchored by the monumental After Hours Til Dawn Tour, which surpassed $1 billion USD in gross revenue, alongside strong global sales and streaming performance from his hit record Hurry Up Tomorrow.

The Canadian superstar also saw a major boost to his net worth following a landmark $200 million USD catalogue deal with Lyric Capital, a move that allowed him to retain creative control while unlocking immense financial value.

Taylor Swift and Beyoncé Claim the Top Three

Pop powerhouse Taylor Swift followed closely in second place with $202 million USD, driven by chart-topping album sales from The Life of a Showgirl, a lucrative Disney+ documentary deal, and continued strength from her streaming catalogue.

In third place, Beyoncé earned $148 million USD, largely fueled by her record-breaking Cowboy Carter Tour, which grossed $407.6 million USD across a unique 32-show mini-residency format. The tour became the highest-grossing country tour in Billboard Boxscore history and the fastest to surpass $400 million USD.

Competitive Middle and Strong Finish

The middle of the top 10 proved fiercely competitive. Kendrick Lamar ranked fourth with $109 million USD, boosted by his headline appearance at the Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show, watched by 133.5 million viewers, and the success of his 2025 album GNX. His joint Grand National Tour with SZA also contributed significantly, grossing $358.7 million USD.

Coldplay and Shakira tied in fifth and sixth place with $105 million USD each, powered respectively by extended legs of the Music of the Spheres World Tour and Shakira’s massively successful Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran World Tour.

Drake finished seventh with $78 million USD, largely from relentless streaming success. The Canadian rapper closed 2025 as Spotify’s most-streamed rapper, pulling in 17.6 billion streams, narrowly surpassing his own 2023 record.

Rounding out the list were Chris Brown at eighth with $74 million USD, driven by the Breezy Bowl XX Stadium World Tour; Zach Bryan in ninth with $70 million USD, blending touring with catalogue deals; and global Latin icon Bad Bunny, who placed tenth with $66 million USD, fueled by massive streaming numbers and a successful residency in Puerto Rico.

Top 10 Highest-Paid Musicians of 2025 (Forbes)

The Weeknd – $298 million

Taylor Swift – $202 million

Global superstar The Weeknd has etched his name into music history, becoming the first artist ever to see a single track surpass 5 billion streams on Spotify, according to Guinness World Records.

The record-breaking milestone was officially confirmed on August 31, 2025, when Spotify announced that The Weeknd’s 2019 smash hit Blinding Lights had crossed the unprecedented threshold.

Widely regarded as one of the defining songs of the decade, Blinding Lights has transcended its initial chart-topping run to become a cultural mainstay. From dominating Billboard Hot 100 charts to fueling viral trends, its longevity and universal replay value have made it a global anthem.

This achievement cements The Weeknd’s standing as one of the most influential artists of the streaming era, pushing the boundaries of digital music consumption. Few tracks have approached such numbers, making the 5-billion milestone a historic first that may remain unmatched for years.

Beyond Spotify, the song’s impact continues to resonate across platforms. The official music video for Blinding Lights, released in January 2020, has amassed over 962 million views on YouTube, underscoring its worldwide reach.

With this record, The Weeknd adds another milestone to his already trailblazing career, once again redefining what is possible in the modern music landscape.

Nigerian music continues to break boundaries on the global stage, and this year’s MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) is no exception. The 2025 VMAs have officially rolled out their full list of nominations, with Afrobeats firmly in the spotlight and some of Nigeria’s biggest stars earning major recognition.

Leading the Nigerian contingent is Burna Boy, who secured three nominations across multiple categories. His Travis Scott-assisted hit TaTaTa earned him a nod for Best Afrobeats, while his powerful solo track Higher is nominated in the Video for Good category. Burna Boy also scores a mention for Best Visual Effects through his appearance in The Weeknd’s cinematic video for Hurry Up Tomorrow.

Wizkid also makes his mark with a nomination for Best Afrobeats for Piece Of My Heart, his collaboration with American singer Brent Faiyaz, a track that has drawn critical acclaim for its smooth blend of R&B and Afrobeats.

Afrobeats queen Tems and street-hop star Asake share a nomination in the same category for their joint effort Get It Right, while Asake earns an additional nod for Best Afrobeats with Active, another collaboration with Travis Scott.

Meanwhile, Rema rounds out the Nigerian nominees in the Best Afrobeats category with his soulful single Baby (Is It A Crime) further showcasing the depth and diversity within the genre.

The 2025 edition of the VMAs, which will air live on September 7, 2025, introduces a dedicated Best Afrobeats category a clear reflection of the genre’s meteoric rise and the growing impact of Nigerian artists on global music culture.

With five Nigerian stars securing prominent nominations, this year’s ceremony is poised to be a celebration of Afrobeats excellence. As anticipation builds, all eyes are now on the VMAs stage to see how these trailblazing artists fare.

As part of its 10th-anniversary celebration, Apple Music has released a comprehensive list of its 500 most-streamed songs over the past decade, with British superstar Ed Sheeran claiming the No. 1 spot with his 2017 global smash, “Shape of You.”

The chart-topping single outperformed major hits like The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights” and Drake’s “God’s Plan,” which came in at second and third place, respectively.

Since its release, Shape of You has set several streaming records, including the highest number of first-day plays on Apple Music, and it held firm atop the Billboard Hot 100 for 12 consecutive weeks. The song later earned Sheeran a Grammy Award for Best Pop Solo Performance in 2018.

The top 10 positions on the list feature a mix of global pop and hip-hop anthems. Post Malone makes two strong showings with “Sunflower” (featuring Swae Lee) at No. 4 and “Rockstar” (featuring 21 Savage) at No. 5. Other notable entries include:

Drake’s “One Dance” featuring Wizkid and Kyla

Travis Scott’s “Sicko Mode”

Ed Sheeran’s “Perfect”

Chris Brown’s “No Guidance”

Billie Eilish’s “Bad Guy”

The rankings continue with familiar favourites: “Closer” by The Chainsmokers and Halsey lands at No. 11, Kendrick Lamar’s “Humble” at No. 15, Ariana Grande’s “7 rings” at No. 19, and BTS’s “Dynamite” making waves at No. 34.

Canadian rap icon Drake reigns supreme with 27 entries on the 500-song list, more than any other artist. Taylor Swift follows with 14, while Mariah Carey makes history as the only artist with a holiday song among the top entries her timeless classic “All I Want for Christmas Is You” sits comfortably at No. 100.

To commemorate the occasion, Apple Music curated a special 10th-anniversary playlist featuring all 500 songs and conducted an exclusive interview with Ed Sheeran. In a reflective chat with Zane Lowe, Sheeran said:

“No one can take away the song. I’ll be able to play it forever… I’m just grateful to have songs like that, where anywhere in the world, you can pick up a guitar and make someone happy.”

The full list and curated playlist are now available for streaming on Apple Music.

Leading the nominations is Kendrick Lamar, who scored a remarkable 10 nods, driven by the success of his latest album, GNX, and the viral buzz of his Drake diss track, Not Like Us.

Close behind are Doechii, Drake, Future, and GloRilla, each securing six nominations, while Metro Boomin follows with five. SZA and The Weeknd earned four nominations apiece, and a strong group including Chris Brown, Lil Wayne, Tyler, the Creator, Playboi Carti, Teddy Swims, Maverick City Music, and Ayra Starr—the Sabi girl herself—each received three nominations.

Marking its 25th anniversary, the 2025 BET Awards promise a memorable celebration of Black excellence around the globe. Ayra Starr proudly stands out as the most nominated African artist, reflecting her growing global impact and solidifying her status as a key player in Afrobeats.

The star-studded event will be broadcast live on June 9, 2025, from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, with comedian Kevin Hart returning as host. This milestone edition is poised to honor the cultural movers and shakers shaping the world of entertainment today.

Kendrick Lamar continues to rewrite the history books in 2025, solidifying his legacy as one of the most impactful artists of his generation.

With his sold-out Grand National Tour stop at the 80,000-capacity AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas on April 26, Kendrick set a new benchmark as the Black male artist with the highest-grossing concert in U.S. history, surpassing The Weeknd’s $9.8 million record set at Sofi Stadium in 2022.

This monumental achievement is just one of several for the Compton rapper in a year already stacked with accolades.

Earlier in the year, Kendrick delivered a historic Super Bowl 59 halftime show, becoming the first solo hip-hop act to headline the iconic performance.

With a staggering 133.5 million U.S. viewers, he edged out Michael Jackson’s long-standing 1993 record. Sharing the stage with SZA for their hit All The Stars, and with narration by Samuel L. Jackson, Lamar crafted a narrative-rich performance that resonated with both fans and critics.

At the 67th Grammy Awards, Kendrick dominated with Not Like Us, taking home 5 trophies—including Song of the Year and Record of the Year—bringing his total Grammy wins to 22, behind only Jay-Z (25) and Kanye West (24) among rappers.

From stadiums to Super Bowl stages, Kendrick Lamar’s 2025 has been a cultural triumph, reinforcing his place not only in hip-hop history but also in the broader tapestry of global music and performance art.

Super Bowl LVII in 2024 made history as only the second championship game to go into overtime, drawing an astonishing 120 million viewers on CBS.

With simulcasts on Nickelodeon, Univision, Paramount+, and other digital platforms, the total viewership soared to 123.4 million—making it the most-watched broadcast in American history, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

For Super Bowl 59, the halftime show was nothing short of legendary. 22-time Grammy winner Kendrick Lamar took center stage, delivering a powerhouse performance packed with his biggest hits.

His appearance comes at a pivotal moment in his career, fresh off a decisive victory in his high-profile rap feud with Drake.

With guest appearances from Grammy-winning singer SZA, 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams, and Oscar-nominated actor Samuel L. Jackson, Lamar’s set was a cultural moment in itself. The defining highlight? His performance of ‘Not Like Us,’ the explosive Drake diss track that had fans in a frenzy.

Given the historic nature of his set, the halftime show is expected to rack up record-breaking replays on YouTube, joining the ranks of iconic performances from Rihanna, Dr. Dre & Friends, The Weeknd, Katy Perry, Usher, Lady Gaga, and other Super Bowl greats.

Grammy-winning artist The Weeknd has officially confirmed the title and release date of his highly anticipated sixth studio album, marking his first new project in three years.

The Canadian singer revealed the exciting news through a social media post, sparking waves of anticipation among fans worldwide.

Titled ‘Hurry Up Tomorrow,’ the upcoming album will be released on January 24, 2025. This new body of work serves as the final chapter in a trilogy that began with ‘After Hours‘ in 2020, followed by ‘Dawn FM’ in 2022. With ‘Hurry Up Tomorrow,’ The Weeknd is set to wrap up a significant phase of his musical journey.

The album will feature several tracks that fans have already gotten a taste of, including “Dancing in the Flames,” “Timeless” featuring Playboi Carti, and the vibrant “São Paulo” in collaboration with Brazilian superstar Anitta.

In celebration of the album’s release, The Weeknd is also gearing up for a special concert event in California. On January 25, 2025, he will headline a one-night-only performance at the Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena, promising a memorable live experience for his fans.

The Brazilian city of São Paulo has played a key role in The Weeknd’s career this year. In September, he performed at the Estádio Morumbi, where he delighted fans by bringing Anitta on stage for a live rendition of their hit collaboration, “São Paulo.”

This announcement follows the immense success of his ‘After Hours Til Dawn Tour,’ which ran from 2022 to 2023, attracting over 3 million attendees across stadiums worldwide.

With a fresh album on the way, fans are eagerly awaiting The Weeknd’s next musical chapter, and *Hurry Up Tomorrow* is poised to be a major milestone in his illustrious career.
