Iconic gospel musician Sammie Okposo has won the “International Artist of the Year” award at the just concluded SOAR Awards ceremony in Rockford, Illinois, USA.

The SOAR Awards 2022 was held on Monday, March 7th, 2022 in Rockford Illinois USA.

The Nigerian gospel veteran was also set to perform at the awards which honoured several gospel artists including William Murphy, Dorinda Clark Cole, and John Hannah.

Sammie gave a beautiful ministration of the recently released single “My Miracle.”

The SOAR Awards is presented by SOAR Radio, the first Gospel internet radio on the official Nielsen BDS National airplay panel.

Tasha Cobbs Leonard, Karen Clark Sheard, Kierra Sheard, Tim Bowman, Jonathan McReynolds, and others attended the ceremony, which was hosted by Todd Dulaney.

The singer took to his social media page to announce his award.

He wrote:

The Soul Train Awards which honours and celebrates African-American entertainers, will be presented on November 20, 2021, at the Apollo Theatre, and will be hosted by Tichina Arnold and Tisha Campbell, two top actors and comedians.

Nigerian pair Wizkid and Tems both received five nominations in the nomination list, which was revealed on November 2nd, 2021.

Four of them were for their smash hit “Essence,” which received nominations for Song of the Year, Video of the Year, The Ashford and Simpson Songwriter’s Award, and Best Collaboration.

Then, for his legendary project Made In Lagos, Wizkid was nominated for Album of the Year, while Tems was nominated for Best New Artist.

H.E.R. leads the 2021 Soul Train Award nominations with eight, followed by prominent American singer and performer, Chris Brown, who has six, and Jazmine Sullivan, who also has six.

Background:

Dunsin Oyekan was born on the 5th of November 1984, to the family of Gbadebo Oyekan in Ilorin, Nigeria, as the only son.

Started his elementary in the Airforce Nursery and Primary school, he excelled and later went to Baptist Model High School where he completed his secondary education.

Dunsin later proceeded to the University of Ilorin, Kwara State, where he studied Industrial Chemistry.

Career:

Coming from a family of music lovers, Dunsin’s father was a classic songwriter and staunch lover of music.

Even after four years of releasing her hit single, “Way Maker”, Sinach is still receiving accolades for the song, one being bagging several nominations at the 2020 Dove Awards

Organized by the Gospel Music Association (GMA) of the United States, the Dove Awards is one of the biggest gospel music awards in the world.

The Song of the Year Category is the biggest accolade and is awarded to a songwriter and the publisher every year. The association has announced the nominees for the 51st Annual GMA Dove Music Awards, and “Way Maker“, has been nominated in three categories.

The categories “Way Maker” is vying for include ‘Song of the Year’, Spanish Language Recorded Song of the Year (as recorded by Priscilla Bueno), and Worship Recorded Song of the Year (as recorded by Leeland). Way Maker’s nomination is arguably the first time ever a song written by a Nigerian gospel artist is making the top category.

Sinach has been on the gospel music scene for quite a while now and she is unarguably one of Nigeria’s most successful gospel artists. The track originally released in 2016, recently gained massive popularity following performances by The Elevation Worship and other Christian rock bands. Her unique sound and back-to-back hit songs, led her to become the first African to top the Billboard Christian Songwriters Chart.

Speaking on the inspiration behind the song, she says: “It is encouraging to see how my songs have become impactful in the lives of many who listen to me. “Way Maker” was written when I was facing a challenge and it became a source of encouragement.”

Sinach joins a long list of international nominees at this year’s award including Hillsong Worship, Kirk Franklin, Jonathan McReynolds, Kanye West, Gloria Gaynor, Tasha Cobbs Leonard and more.

“The GMA is honored to continue its legacy of celebrating our diverse creative community and the music that moves us and ministers to us all, especially during these trying times,” GMA President Jackie Patillo said in a statement. The winners will be announced on TBN on October 30, and due to COVID-19 restrictions, in lieu of the annual live awards show, the show will consist of pre-recorded performances and acceptance speeches.
