Super Eagles and Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi has spoken publicly for the first time since suffering a serious injury during a Premier League clash against Leicester City.

The incident, which occurred after a collision with the goalpost, left fans and teammates deeply concerned for the Nigerian forward’s well-being.

The match, which ended in a 2-2 draw, dealt a blow to Forest’s hopes of securing UEFA Champions League qualification for the 2025/26 season.

But the greater worry centered on Awoniyi’s health after he was rushed to the hospital and placed in an induced coma following emergency abdominal surgery.

Taking to his official Instagram page on Monday, May 19, 2025, Awoniyi shared an emotional message of gratitude:

“This season has been one of the most difficult of my career but through it all, I have felt the love. With the grace of God, I am grateful to still be here, to still be fighting, to still be smiling, and to be in good spirits.”

He went on to thank the Nottingham Forest community:

“To my teammates, coaches, staff and the entire Forest family, thank you for your well wishes. Seeing you all on your visit to the hospital lifted my spirits more than words can say.”

Awoniyi underwent a two-stage surgical procedure to repair a severe abdominal injury. The first stage was performed on Monday, May 12, followed by a brief period in a medically induced coma on Tuesday to monitor his progress. The second stage, which involved wound closure, was successfully completed on Wednesday.

Awoniyi’s message has drawn widespread support from fans, fellow players, and the football community at large, with many praising his courage and determination to return stronger.

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder James Maddison has been named the Premier League Player of the Month for August 2023.

Following his summer transfer from Leicester City, Maddison has settled in well at Spurs.

Shortly after his arrival, he was named one of Son Heung-min’s new vice-captains for the team. He also received Harry Kane’s number 10 shirt after Kane moved to Bayern Munich.

Early on in his Tottenham career under Ange Postecoglou, Maddison has shown promise. In their opening weekend 2-2 tie at Brentford, he contributed two assists, and a week later, he scored the first goal in a 2-0 triumph at Bournemouth.

Between those two games, the England international was instrumental in Spurs’ 2-0 victory over Manchester United at home.

Taiwo Awoniyi of Nottingham Forest, Jarrod Bowen of West Ham United, Bryan Mbeumo of Brentford, Kaoru Mitoma of Brighton & Hove Albion, and Rodri of Manchester City were the other players nominated for the August award.

Maddison’s triumph marks the 25th occasion someone from Tottenham has won the Premier League Player of the Month award.

While his on-pitch performances have been superb, Maddison has also quickly won over the Spurs faithful with comments about his desire to join the club.

“I could just see myself playing for Tottenham, I could just see myself in that team, in that kit, in that stadium. It just fitted well for me,” he said in a recent interview.

“They’ve always had…that sort of midfielder who wants to be creative, entertain the fans and be a personality.”

Maddison and Tottenham return to Premier League action on Saturday with the visit of Sheffield United.

The Premier League has announced the six nominees for the Player of the Month award for August 2023.

The club season resumed last month, with three rounds of Premier League activity in August, followed by another at the start of September before the international break.

Here are the nominees.

Taiwo Awoniyi (Nottingham Forest)

After settling back into life in England slowly, Taiwo Awoniyi is now firmly established as one of the Premier League’s most difficult attackers to control.

The Nigerian player helped Nottingham Forest avoid relegation by scoring 10 goals in 27 league games at the end of the 2022–23 season, and he’s off to a strong start this time around.

Awoniyi scored in each of Forest’s three Premier League games in August, even in close losses against Manchester United and Arsenal on the road.

Jarrod Bowen (West Ham United)

Many predicted West Ham United would fight relegation this season after they lost club captain Declan Rice to Arsenal and were unable to find a replacement for him quickly.

After winning a position in the Premier League for the 2023–24 season, Super Eagles and Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi and his teammates groove to Davido’s “Unavailable.”

Taiwo Awoniyi of the Super Eagles of Nigeria, alongside his Nottingham Forest players, all reacted to Davido’s hit song ‘Unavailable‘ in the dressing room after securing a spot in the premier league ahead of the 2023/2024 season.

Awoniyi scored the goal that handed the Tricky Trees the much-needed three points on Saturday when they hosted Arsenal at City Ground.

In Forest’s previous two matches against Southampton and Chelsea, Awoniyi had netted four goals. And thanks to his efforts, his team came away from those games with four points.

Arsenal tried to subdue him, but he seized the first chance that presented itself and gave his team the victory.

The goal helped Nottingham Forest stamp their spot in the Premier League next season, and the team switched to celebration mode after the victory.

The squad was ecstatic to have secured a place in the top division for the first time following their promotion to the Premier League in the 2021/2022 season. Davido also shared a video of his squad singing and dancing to the smash tune.

Nottingham Forest star Taiwo Awoniyi has described the match against his former club Liverpool as emotional for him.

Awoniyi scored the game-winning goal for Forest on Saturday, handing Jurgen Klopp’s team a narrow 1-0 defeat at the City Ground.

Although Virgil van Dijk and Liverpool wasted several opportunities, they might have easily given up the second goal in stoppage time when Alisson Becker was stuck up the field, but Brennan Johnson hit the post.

“I think this team will stick together; we’re a family; the fans are always with us; we just have to keep on going,” Awoniyi told BT Sport post-match, as quoted by The Mirror.

“I was looking forward to playing Liverpool because they signed me when I was 18 and it was an emotional game for me. For me, I think it’s a good game for my team. We had the plan to stay compact, and in the end, we won. I’m very happy about it.”

Nottingham Forest F.C. shocked fans by defeating Liverpool in this week’s English Premier League match.

A poor Liverpool, looking for a third straight league victory, could not have many complaints as Forest put on an outstanding performance to secure their second victory of the year.

In the first half, Jurgen Klopp’s team struggled behind a focused Forest team that broke their rhythm.

Forest went ahead in the 55th minute when Awoniyi poached a rebound after his initial effort struck the post.

The hosts had numerous opportunities to give themselves some breathing room throughout the counterattack and were dangerous.

Dean Henderson, the goalkeeper, produced a number of saves, the best of which came in stoppage time when he miraculously stopped Virgil van Dijk’s spectacular close-range header from a corner.

With nine points from 12 games, Forest held on to climb up one spot to 19th, one ahead of Leicester City.
