P-Square ft T.I. – Ejeajo (2014)

Since their debut in 2003, P-Square (made up of twins Peter and Paul) has been the most successful group in Nigeria.

They’ve released a number of popular albums, and their fame has expanded throughout Africa and Europe.

They have a cult following on YouTube, with recordings of celebs like Robin Van Persie, Rihanna, the French Olympic squad, and others appreciating their music.

P-Square has collaborated with foreign artists on numerous occasions, resulting in a large number of tunes on this list.

They featured American rapper T.I. on this song, which was highly influenced by Prince’s 1979 classic I Wanna Be Your Lover.

P-Square ft Rick Ross – Beautiful Onyinye (2012)

One of the best and most commercially successful collaborations P-square has ever done. “Beautiful Onyinye” which features Hip-Hop artist, Rick Ross was so popular that it overshadowed the original.

The Pulse ft Busta Rhymes – Pray Sotey (2009)

In the 2000s, Star Lager Beer held a music competition called Star Quest. Contestants were required to be able to play at least one musical instrument and were divided into bands that competed against one another.

The Pulse won the 2009 edition of the competition and received a recording contract with Kennis Music as a prize.

A partnership between The Pulse and American rapper Busta Rhymes was also orchestrated by Nigerian Breweries, the manufacturers of Star Lager Beer.

Busta Rhymes was in the country for the annual Star Mega Jam concert. That cooperation resulted in this song.

Davido ft Meek Mill – Fans Mi (2015)

In 2011, Davido’s blockbuster song Dami Duro captured the public’s attention. Since then, he has enjoyed a series of hits and has collaborated with numerous foreign artists on his tracks. On this list, he appears several times.

D’Banj ft Snoop Dogg – Mr Endowed (2011)

Wizkid ft Drake and Skepta – Ojuelegba remix (2014)

Since his first hit Holla At Your Boy in 2010, Wizkid has ruled the Nigerian music landscape.

He went on to have a streak of hits, including Don’t Dull, Tease Me, and Pakurumo, among others. In the last three decades, his music has evolved, becoming more afrobeat-influenced.

This song was highly influenced by Fela Anikulapo Kuti’s Confusion Break Bone and Dr. Dre’s Nothing But A G Thang. The original song was released in 2014, and it can be found on Wizkid’s album Ayo.

Skepta is a rapper and grime artist who is British-Nigerian. He engineered Wizkid’s and Drake’s collaboration, and he also appears on the track.

Ace Nigerian talented singer, songwriter, and producer, Austin “Tay” Iornongu Iwar, popularly known as Tay Iwar, has signed an international deal with Warner Chappell Music.

Warner Chappell Music, an American music publishing company and a subsidiary of the Warner Music Group.

The company boasts heavyweights like Aretha Franklin, Dave, Twentyone Pilots, T.I., Quincy Jones, David Bowie, Katy Perry, Nina Simeone, DJ Spinall, Calvin Lewin, and a host of others, recently signed the highly underrated and talented Tay Iwar.

The international publishing deal sees Tay Iwar join the imprint through its joint venture with The Flight Club.

His sophomore, The Playmaker, was a career switch into Oliver De Coque-esque singing style that brought him continental smash hits and superstardom.

While he released the unifying collaborative 2 Kings, alongside his brother, friend, and collaborator, Olamide, his third album, Deal With It was where he truly crowned himself.

As the window of his superstardom slightly slowed down, Phyno released an impressive album, which merged his famed gritty Rap side with his Oliver De Coque-esque side to produce some timeless bops.

Sadly, the album was slept on outside the South-East. But Ezege never stopped cooking.

He quickly moved to consolidate two things: a more contemporary sing-songy style, drenched in Afro-swing and more experimental dabbles in traditional Igbo pop genres like Ogene, Egedege, and Ekpili.

The result of his journey so far has resulted in his fourth solo album, which comes with yet another impressive album title, Something To Live For. 

In a lot of ways, that title reflects Phyno’s current standing in Nigerian music: a young OG on the fourth of his nine lives in the Nigerian music industry. Money is not an issue anymore, neither is a thirst for stardom.

He is not as acclaimed as a superstar as he once was, but he keeps going; buoyed by a natural love for music and an appetite to chase new horizons and additional successes.

When you’ve been the dancer and then the music producer from Enugu, who came to Lagos and became a superstar, you don’t see impossibilities.

The astounding number of Afroswing records (6) on this album, as well as Phyno’s D Smoke feature, might suggest that Ezege has his eyes on the UK and/or American markets/appeal with this one. More so, he blends more English with his Igbo deliveries.

 His fourth solo album is an exercise in grown topics around gratitude, his journey, love, loss, braggadocio, and more.

His demeanor is grown, confident, affirmative, and sometimes contemplative.

Across 16 tracks, Afro-swing forms the bedrock of most tracks, sprinkled with one or two hard-hitting rap records, some Highlife, one Ekpili, and one Amapiano – which is quite amazing, to be honest.

More than anything, this album showcases Phyno’s already documented range.

T.I who is well known for his song, ‘Live your life’ featuring Rihanna is someone who always speaks out against racism. In a video, he posted on his Instagram, Police can be seen assaulting young men of color.

In protest against the event, he wrote,

“Alright, so THIS IS WHY young people of color say “FUCK THE POLICE” y’all some racist, hateful, disrespectful cowards who really just jealous of young people because they doing more with their youth & their talents than you did with yours. Best African duo of all time is the defunct P-Square. No doubt. They must be Sauti Sol’s role model. Of course, they fell out, and broke up and have since gone solo. Paul as Rudeboy and Peter as Mr. P.

The identical twin brothers, are known all over Africa and beyond form their numerous hit singles, electrifying on-stage performance and their top-notch Videos. They also have some of the best albums of all time (Get Squared and Game Over). And, they’ve done stuffs with many superstars, T.I, Akon Don Jazzy, Dave Scott and more. They do RnB and Afro-Pop, but their versatility isn’t disputable. And their consistency is as 2Baba’s, over the years. And, of course, they are the richest musicians in Africa – when they’re together. They’re always smiling to the bank, and that’s it.

Majority of people want ’em back. Mr. P and Rudeboy ain’t names people wan’ register in their minds, they want P-Square. BUT, due to their endless disputes, they had to move on.

Does it seem like they’re better off now?

Having dropped three singles each as solo, we know they’re both talented, and that PSquare was a collective work.

Mr. P (Peter Okoye) has singles; “Cool It Down,” “For My Head” and “My Way.” While Rudeboy (Paul Okoye) has “Nkenji Keke,” “Fire Fire” and “Somebody Baby.” Let’s not forget Rudeboy just dropped IFAi.

Mr. P exudes a strong RnB persona, which is something the duo did, in their early days. You’ll easily think Mr. P wrote songs like “Say Your Love,” “Am I Still The Special Man,” and “Bring It On.”

On the other hand, Rudeboy settles for the pop side. With jams like “Nkenji Keke” and “Fire Fire,” in you’ll also notice his versatility. Trying out other genres without flopping shit totally.

Both of them have got massive airplays. Mr. P’s most popular being “Cool It Down” and Rudeboy’s being “Fire Fire.” A crisp of both of ’em is what makes up P-Square truly.

BUT, do you see Mr. P getting nominated as “Artist Of The Year,” or Rudeboy’s song as “Song Of The Year”? Their last huge effort together, “Bank Alert” has got more spins than all the songs they’ve released solo. And this is because, we can’t recover from P-Square, that easily. It’ll take years, and many years, for us to accept them as solo artists, that they are now.

They may have retired before we accept ’em.
