The Strasbourg move marks an exciting new chapter.

It may have gone somewhat under the radar, but one of France’s most talented teenagers, Kingsley Olufade, has completed his move from LOSC Lille to RC Strasbourg. Kingsley Olufade, who has represented Togo through his father, will now join Strasbourg as he continues to progress through Europe’s top footballing academies.

The defender, who is of Nigerian descent through his grandfather, has already generated interest
from West Africa with the move. Nigeria, which keeps a close eye on players with Nigerian heritage playing across Europe, will now be keeping tabs on Kingsley Olufade as Super Eagles fans dream about what he could become.

A powerful defender who isn’t scared to play his game physically, the Strasbourg academy
signing could have international ambitions of his own one day.

Football Talent Runs Deep in the Family

Though Olufade’s father represented the Togo national team, the youngster’s grandfather was born in Nigeria. That means that despite representing Lille at youth level, the 18-year-old still has the option of playing for Nigeria at the senior level. As he steps foot into adulthood and develops as a player for Strasbourg, the hope is that Olufade will choose Nigeria as the country to represent, should he keep improving. For the time being, his hopes will be focused on developing as a player for Strasbourg and forcing his way into their first-team setup. One day, that could lead to Ligue 1.

Strasbourg have a reputation for bringing young players through and improving them as footballers. The team from Alsace have allowed academy graduates such as Nabil Dirar and Hannibal Mejbri to leave and flourish elsewhere due to the high standard of coaching the club offers to their young talents.

Representing Strasbourg at a senior level would likely mean the 18-year-old joins Ligue 1. The fiercely competitive league has been home to many Nigerian players over the years, and it remains to be seen if the defender will take the world by storm in France.

Nigeria Continues to Stockpile Players

The Super Eagles continue to find players with Nigerian heritage all over Europe. From players such as Henry Onyekuru to Wilfred Ndidi and Victor Osimhen, the West African nation has found plenty of players to choose from in recent years. The players mentioned all established themselves in their respective leagues and at BettingTop10 Nigeria sportsbooks before making the switch to the Nigerian national team.

It’s safe to say that Strasbourg’s newest signing, Kingsley Olufade. will be hoping to do the same should he continue to progress as we believe he will. He may have the option of playing for Togo should he wish to represent his father’s nation, but only time will tell.

Of course, Rome wasn’t built in a day. While some praise is necessary, it’s too early to crown Kingsley Olufade the next Super Eagles saviour. With Nigeria missing the 2026 World Cup, there is an urgent need to get them qualified for the 2030 World Cup. Kingsley Olufade will have to continue improving as a footballer before his name is even mentioned.

Physically, he has the attributes to succeed at the highest level, but he will have to continue learning at Strasbourg before a move to the club’s senior team can be considered. Just because he has the capability of playing for Nigeria doesn’t mean he will become the next Tyrese Campbell.

Only time will tell if he can make it as a professional, but if there’s one thing we know about players that come through Strasbourg, it’s that they can handle themselves on the ball.

Speaking during an interview with Algerian journalist Riadh Belaïche, the Franco-Malian tactician admitted that Nigeria faced an uphill battle when he was appointed, with the Super Eagles having managed only three points from their opening four qualifying matches.

Despite the difficult situation, Chelle said his side fought to keep their qualification hopes alive but ultimately paid the price for failing to capitalise in a crucial fixture against Zimbabwe.

“When I arrived, Nigeria had three points from 12. We fought hard to reach the playoffs, but those two dropped points against Zimbabwe hurt us a lot. It was in our hands to qualify for the World Cup but we didn’t,” Chelle said.

The coach acknowledged that the team gave everything in the closing stages of the campaign, but admitted that missed opportunities proved too costly in the end.

Nigeria’s hopes suffered a major blow after settling for a draw against Zimbabwe. This result left the three-time African champions with an impossible task in the remaining qualifiers despite an improved run of performances.

Chelle’s assessment suggests that the failure to qualify was not down to a lack of talent, but rather an inability to secure maximum points in matches that mattered most.

With the World Cup dream now over, the Super Eagles will shift their attention to future assignments under Chelle, who is expected to continue rebuilding the squad as Nigeria targets success in upcoming international competitions.

Under the revised arrangement, Chelle will now oversee both the senior national team and the U23 setup, a move designed to tighten the link between Nigeria’s top-level squad and its Olympic pipeline. The deal also reportedly includes an improved compensation package of up to $100,000, while the Nigeria Football Federation will now take responsibility for paying the salaries of his technical assistants.

The decision was finalised during a high-level meeting on Tuesday at the National Sports Commission headquarters in Abuja. Key figures in attendance included NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko, NSC Director-General Bukola Olopade, NFF President Ibrahim Gusau, NFF General Secretary Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, and Chelle himself.

Officials say the appointment is part of a broader strategy aimed at restructuring Nigeria’s football development framework, ensuring smoother progression from youth levels to the senior national team.

Nigeria’s U23 side carries a rich Olympic history, with the country becoming the first African nation to complete a full set of Olympic football medals: gold at the 1996 Atlanta Games, silver at Beijing 2008, and bronze at Rio 2016.

With Chelle now in charge of both setups, attention will shift toward rebuilding the Dream Team and pushing for a return to the Olympic stage, as Nigeria looks to revive its strong tradition in international football.

The decision to split the teams across both assignments appears to be part of Chelle’s wider plan to assess more players while building depth within the Super Eagles setup.

While the Unity Cup squad largely offers opportunities to emerging and fringe players, the friendly squad features several established stars expected to test themselves against strong European opposition.

The move also gives the new coach another chance to closely evaluate talent ahead of crucial future competitions, including the 2027 AFCON qualifiers.

With excitement already building ahead of the competition, the draw confirmed the qualifying groups that will determine which nations secure places at the continental showpiece set to be jointly hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.

A total of 48 national teams were distributed across four seeding pots before being placed into their respective groups. The qualification format will see the top two teams from each group advance to the main tournament, setting up what is expected to be a fiercely competitive journey across the continent.

For the Nigeria national football team, the draw delivered a group containing the Madagascar national football team, the Tanzania national football team, and the Guinea-Bissau national football team. The Super Eagles, three-time African champions, will be expected to navigate the group strongly as they continue their quest for another continental title.

Meanwhile, reigning African champions Morocco national football team, begin their title defense from Group A, where they have been paired with the Gabon national football team, Niger national football team, and Lesotho national football team.

Another intriguing storyline from the draw involves the South African national football team, who continue to impress under head coach Hugo Broos. South Africa will compete in Group D, where they are set for a fascinating encounter against Kenya national football team, now managed by former South African striker Benni McCarthy.

With the groups now finalized, focus will gradually shift toward the upcoming fixtures as countries across Africa prepare for what promises to be another intense and dramatic qualification campaign on the road to AFCON 2027.

The Super Eagles have officially unveiled their 2026 jersey, sharing striking promotional images across their media platforms on Monday to announce the new look.

Super Eagles Reveal Stunning 2026 Jersey

The two variants quickly grabbed attention online, as fans eagerly weighed in on the latest design representing Nigeria’s senior national team.

The release comes ahead of the Super Eagles’ participation in a four-nation invitational tournament in Antalya, Turkey, where they will face the Iran national football team on March 27 and Jordan national football team on March 31.

The matches are part of Nigeria’s rebuilding efforts following their disappointment at failing to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The new kit blends multiple shades of green with sleek, modern patterns, capturing the country’s footballing heritage while adding contemporary design touches aimed at appealing to a global audience.

Fan reactions, however, have been mixed—quite a contrast to the frenzy that greeted the Super Eagles’ 2018 World Cup jersey. Back then, the bold zigzag design became a global phenomenon, selling out almost instantly, attracting huge pre-orders, and prompting queues outside stores in cities like London.

That launch was widely celebrated as one of the most successful football kit releases ever, cementing Nigeria’s reputation at the intersection of sport and fashion.

With the 2026 jersey now out, all eyes will be on the Super Eagles as they take the pitch in Turkey, and fans are already buzzing to see if this new design can make a mark both on and off the field.

Head coach Éric Chelle has announced his Super Eagles squad ahead of the March international break, as Nigeria gears up for a four-nation invitational tournament.

The selection is seen as another key step in Chelle’s ongoing rebuilding project, with the Malian tactician continuing to evaluate his options as he shapes the future of the national team. The squad reflects a deliberate mix of experienced players and fresh faces, underlining his focus on competition and depth.

Among the notable inclusions are familiar names like Maduka Okoye, Semi Ajayi, Frank Onyeka, Moses Simon, Samuel Chukwueze, Akor Adams, and Paul Onuachu.

The list also features some exciting new call-ups. Scotland-based defender Emmanuel Fernandez has earned his maiden invitation, alongside Germany-based forward Philip Otele and Collins Sor of KRC Genk. Meanwhile, goalkeeper Adebayo Adeleye returns to the squad.

Reports suggest that several new faces have been drafted into the defence and goalkeeping departments, while a few regulars have been left out, signaling Chelle’s intention to build healthy competition across all positions.

Nigeria will face Jordan, Iran, and Costa Rica in the invitational tournament scheduled for later this month. The matches are expected to give the coaching crew a clearer picture of player combinations and tactical flexibility.

Beyond being routine friendlies, the games offer a platform for players to prove themselves and stake a claim for regular roles in the squad. With expectations always high for the Super Eagles, fans will be watching closely to see how this evolving team performs under Chelle’s guidance.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has imposed heavy sanctions on Algeria following multiple acts of misconduct during their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 quarter-final defeat to the Super Eagles of Nigeria.

In an official communiqué issued on Wednesday, January 21, 2025, CAF confirmed that the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) was found guilty of several breaches of the competition’s disciplinary and security regulations.

According to CAF, the sanctions stemmed from improper conduct by Algerian players and team officials, including confrontations with match officials after the final whistle and a failure to maintain discipline throughout the encounter.

CAF described the behaviour as unacceptable and contrary to the principles of fair play and sportsmanship expected at a major continental tournament.

Supporter misconduct also contributed significantly to the punishment. CAF cited the lighting of flares, the throwing of objects onto the pitch, and lapses in crowd control and stadium security as aggravating factors during the match.

As a result, the Algerian FA has been fined approximately $100,000, covering both team-related and crowd-related offences.

In addition to the financial penalties, CAF has handed out player suspensions, which will be enforced during Algeria’s qualification campaign for AFCON 2027.

CAF stressed that the sanctions are intended to serve as a strong warning, reiterating that indiscipline—whether from players, officials, or supporters—will not be tolerated, particularly at flagship tournaments such as the Africa Cup of Nations.

In his latest vlog, the Fulham midfielder spoke candidly about the Malian-born tactician’s impact on the Nigerian national team, praising him for building strong unity and chemistry among the players.

According to Iwobi, Chelle’s leadership has gone beyond tactics, helping transform the squad into a close-knit family.

Iwobi recounted an emotional moment behind the scenes, disclosing that the coach was visibly moved during a recent team address.

“The coach (Eric Chelle) has done a lot for us. Everybody worked hard for him, and when he gave his last speech, he got emotional,” Iwobi said.
“He deserves a lot of praise. He got the team together — big chemistry.”

The midfielder’s comments underline how Chelle has earned the trust of the squad, fostering a collective spirit that has been evident in Nigeria’s recent performances.

The Super Eagles have shown renewed grit, defensive discipline, and togetherness, qualities Iwobi attributes directly to the manager’s influence.

Since taking charge, Chelle has successfully navigated the intense pressure that comes with managing Nigeria’s national team, winning over senior figures like Iwobi while seamlessly integrating new talents into the setup.

In a football culture where coaches are often heavily scrutinized, Chelle’s ability to inspire unity and emotion within a team of global stars speaks volumes about his leadership and could prove vital to Nigeria’s ambitions going forward.

A wave of emotions swept through social media on Wednesday night after a video surfaced showing popular Nigerian singer Teniola Apata, professionally known as Teni, breaking down in tears following the Super Eagles’ exit from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Nigeria’s campaign came to a painful end after the Super Eagles fell 4–2 on penalties to host nation Morocco in their AFCON semi-final clash at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, Rabat.

The encounter ended goalless after 120 minutes of intense football, forcing the contest to be decided from the spot.

Although the scoreline suggested a balanced contest, Morocco largely controlled proceedings, registering 16 goal attempts compared to Nigeria’s two.

Still, the Super Eagles stayed alive thanks to an inspired performance from goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, who matched Moroccan shot-stopper Yassine Bounou save for save during regulation time and extra time.

Nigeria’s attacking duo of Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman struggled to find space against a well-organised Moroccan defence. The hosts were marshalled superbly by captain Achraf Hakimi at right-back, with Noussair Mazraoui equally influential on the opposite flank, combining defensive solidity with attacking thrust.

With neither side able to find a breakthrough, penalties followed, and it was Morocco who held their nerve. Youssef En-Nesyri stepped up to convert the winning kick, sealing a place in the final for the Atlas Lions.

Nigeria’s hopes faded after Samuel Chukwueze missed his effort and Bruno Onyemaechi was denied, while Paul Onuachu and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru were the only Super Eagles players to score from the spot.

As fans across the country struggled to process the heartbreak, Teni’s reaction quickly became a talking point online. In a video shared on her Instagram page, the singer was seen crying uncontrollably, leaning beside an elderly security guard as she vented her frustration over Nigeria’s penalty miss.

Clearly emotional, Teni appeared particularly upset with Chukwueze’s penalty, openly expressing her displeasure in the clip. She captioned the video with a mix of humour and anger, writing:

“CHUKWUEZE I SWEAR MAKE I NO JUST TALK😡 YOU GO SEE ME FOR DREAM THIS NIGHT.”

Morocco will now face Senegal in Sunday’s final as they chase only their second AFCON title, having last won the tournament in 1976. Nigeria, meanwhile, must regroup quickly as it prepares for Saturday’s third-place playoff against Egypt, which narrowly lost to Senegal in the other semi-final.

For many fans, celebrities included, the defeat was more than just a football result, and Teni’s emotional reaction captured the heartbreak felt by millions across the country.

Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has reacted on social media after losing a hefty $50,000 (about ₦71 million) following the Super Eagles’ dramatic defeat to Morocco at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Nigeria’s AFCON journey came to a painful halt on Wednesday night after a tense semi-final clash against the host nation ended goalless in regulation time and extra time before Morocco edged the Super Eagles 4–2 on penalties. Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou emerged as the hero of the night, pulling off decisive saves to send his country into the final.

Ahead of the encounter, Davido had openly backed Nigeria with his wallet, revealing that he had placed a $50,000 wager on the Super Eagles to reach the final.

The singer even shared his betting slip online, confidently projecting a massive payout.

“Nigerians to make the finals and I’ll double my stake on my slip,” Davido wrote while sharing his slip.

However, Nigeria’s loss meant the bet did not land, with the Super Eagles now set to face Egypt in the third-place playoff, while Morocco and Senegal battle for the AFCON crown.

Despite the setback, Davido appeared unfazed. Shortly after the match, the Grammy-nominated singer took to the Instagram Stories section of his verified page to share a calm, almost tongue-in-cheek reaction. He posted a photo of himself enjoying a plate of grilled fish as he prepared to leave Morocco.

Accompanying the post, Davido simply wrote, “Perfect sign out.”

While the Super Eagles’ exit was a bitter pill for Nigerian fans, Davido’s relaxed response showed that, win or lose, life and good food go on.
