According to Spotify’s 2025 Wrapped data for Nigeria, the song led all others in terms of shares across both private and public digital spaces, underlining its wide appeal and emotional pull among listeners.

Beyond chart positions, the data provides a broader picture of how Nigerians engage with music. Spotify noted that sharing songs has become a deeply social act, with music serving as a quiet but powerful way to stay connected.

“It also reflects a broader trend in which Nigerians use music as a personal handshake in song form, a way to say, ‘I’m thinking of you’, without typing a word.”

Following closely at number two was Rema’s “Fun,” which gained massive traction on Snapchat and Instagram platforms, where music sharing is closely tied to personal expression and identity.

“Listeners suggest that sharing the song is less about private messaging and more about identity performance.”

Burna Boy’s Love claimed the third spot, spreading rapidly across Snapchat, Instagram stories, and WhatsApp. The track became a favourite for users looking to express emotions publicly, moving easily between group chats and social feeds.

Listeners noted that the song carried a shared emotional warmth, making it easy to pass along. Gospel music also featured prominently on the list, with Lawrence Oyor’s Favour ranking fourth, while No Turning Back II by Gaise Baba and Lawrence Oyor placed fifth.

These faith-based tracks highlighted the strong presence of spirituality in Nigeria’s digital culture. They were widely circulated through WhatsApp groups, SMS messages, and story feeds, often shared for encouragement, reassurance, and collective reflection.

Spotify’s report further revealed that social listening tools such as Blend, Friends Mix, and collaborative playlists played a major role in shaping listening habits in 2025. Rather than simply enhancing the experience, these features turned music into a shared ritual.

Jam sessions in Nigeria surged by 145 per cent compared to 2024, as friends, couples, work teams, and social circles embraced real-time listening as a new way to bond. The focus shifted from the songs themselves to the moments they created together.

It became less about the songs themselves and more about the shared experience they created, a reminder that community is often built in the smallest moments.

“In 2025, every forwarded song, shared link or story post tells the same story. ‘Music is a social glue, a mirror of mood, a bridge across private and public spaces, and a thread weaving individuals into community.’”

Industry observers say the sharing patterns explain why some songs travelled faster and farther than others. According to them, Nigerians share music not just for entertainment, but to feel connected, express identity, uplift one another, and ultimately, belong.

Asake takes the crown as the most-streamed artist in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), specifically in  Nigeria, Gambia, and Benin. And it wasn’t just the Gen Z crowd who were hooked – Asake, alongside Burna Boy, Shallipopi, and Seyi Vibez, captivated listeners from 13 to 55+ years old, landing on the top 10 artists list for these age groups.

Rising stars Ayo Maff and Muyeez stormed the most-streamed tracks list with tracks “Dealer” and “Instagram,” proving the industry’s bright future. Young Jonn’s hits “Aquafina” and “Stronger” showcased his staying power, while Burna Boy held his own with “Higher.” It’s a dynamic blend of old and new, driving the industry forward.

This year, Spotify Wrapped introduces listeners to an overview of their music preferences through an access to their personalized 2023 Wrapped experience. Spotify users will be able to exclusively unveil their listening journey on the Spotify mobile app on iOS and Android and also via web view on mobile or Desktop on Spotify.com/Wrapped.

Drake is the most streamed artist in Sub-Saharan Africa, followed by Burna Boy, making him the most streamed African artist in SSA, for the second year in a row.

Asake, Davido and Omah Lay all make an appearance in the top ten, showing Nigeria’s dominance in the music scene across the continent. Ayra Starr narrowly misses the top ten most streamed artists list, landing at number 11 and being the top streamed female artist in SSA.

When it comes to tracks that the whole region can agree on, Ruger’s Asiwaju takes the day, followed by Ayra Starr’s Rush. A host of other Nigerian tracks also make the list include Asake’s Lonely At The Top which is the most streamed track in Nigeria this year. Tyler ICU is the sole South African with Mnike, featuring DJ Maphorisa, Nandipha808, Ceeka RSA & Tyron Dee, and Libianca’s People is still making waves, almost a year after its release, landing it in the eighth spot.

Davido’s album Timeless was released earlier this year, after much anticipation from the fans, so it follows that it is the most streamed album in SSA, and two tracks from the album, Feel and Unavailable, featuring Musa Keys are on the top ten most streamed tracks in SSA. To say that Asake is living the dream would be an understatement, after all, the artist was relatively unknown a few short years ago, and now two of his albums, Work of Art and Mr. Money With The Vibe are in the top streamed list in the whole of Sub-Saharan Africa.

The top exported artist in SSA is Rema, thanks to the popularity of Calm Down, featuring Selena Gomez, which is also the most exported track from SSA. Furthermore, for the first time ever, an African artist-led track not only gained 1 billion streams on Spotify, it is also the eighth most streamed track globally. No small feat considering just a few years ago, African tracks were mostly confined to the continent. All the African artists whose music was felt not just on the continent, but also on the global stages, are featured on Spotify’s Gone Abroad Presents…Global African Hits of 2023.

Even though Ayra Starr leads in the top streamed female artists list, the only other African female artist in the top ten is Tems, with the rest of the list being occupied by American artists.

As a rapper, AKA said that he had nothing to prove and that people would always have something to say. He continued by saying that the sheer amount of happiness his music has provided to South Africans speaks for itself.
