When asked which Manchester United players he looked up to as a young fan, Sofyan Amrabat named a number of Red Devils heroes.

The midfielder joined the Red Devils on loan from Fiorentina for the current campaign, with an option for a permanent transfer to United in the summer.

The great United midfielders who stood out to him as he watched the club from a distance are undoubtedly why the Moroccan international will aim to be a regular in Erik ten Hag’s midfield.

Asked which Red Devils stars he admired, Amrabat said: ‘I think United had so many fantastic players and young midfielders.

‘So, in general, I look more to the midfielders like Paul Scholes, Roy Keane, David Beckham.

‘But there were so many big players. Gary Neville, Rio Ferdinand, Louis Saha, Wayne Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo. I can go on for one hour to say names.’

Nordin, Amrabat’s older brother, has already made a name for himself in the Premier League, having played for Watford from 2016 to 2018. The former Hornets player offered some advise to his younger sibling before the move to Old Trafford.

Man Utd had been linked with a bid for Amrabat for the bulk of the transfer window, but the club wouldn’t seal a deal until the very last minutes.

According to a source from earlier on September 1, the club has now decided to pay Fiorentina a loan fee of £8.5 million and will maintain the option to purchase the player to a permanent contract for an additional £17.1 million in the summer of 2024. If Man Utd were to sign the player outright, they would also promise to perhaps pay up to £4.3 million in performance-related add-ons.

A club statement announcing the deal reads: “Sofyan Amrabat has joined Manchester United on loan from ACF Fiorentina until June 2024, subject to international clearance and registration requirements.”

The midfielder had been very eager to sign for Manchester United throughout the transfer window. Personal terms had been reached back in mid-August, and the player had even been removed from first-team exercises at Fiorentina in an effort to close a deal.

Speaking about the signing John Murtough said: “We have tracked Sofyan for a long time, so we are really pleased to bring him to Manchester United. His committed, high-energy approach to the game fits perfectly with the group that we are building here.

“We know that Sofyan’s mentality, dynamism and technical qualities will help the squad as we look to achieve success in all competitions this season.”

Amrabat completes what’s been a fairly busy summer for Man Utd. The club secured the services of a number of new players including Andre Onana, Rasmus Hojlund, Mason Mount and Sergio Reguilon.
