Renowned gospel singer Osinachi Joseph Egbu, popularly known as Sinach, is embroiled in a ₦5 billion copyright lawsuit filed by music producer Michael Oluwole, also known as Maye.

The case, heard on November 27, 2024, at the Federal High Court in Lagos, centres on the ownership and earnings of Sinach’s globally celebrated song, ‘Way Maker.’

Released in December 2015, ‘Way Maker‘ has become an anthem in gospel music, earning widespread acclaim and recognition.

However, Oluwole claims that his critical contributions to the song—such as recording, mixing, mastering, and creating instrumental elements like the piano, strings, and synthesizers—have gone unrecognized.

Oluwole contends that despite his vital role in shaping the track’s success, Sinach has excluded him from the profits and denied him credit. He is demanding ₦5 billion in damages, a share of the song’s revenue, and legal acknowledgement of his rights as a contributor. In addition, he is seeking a court injunction to prevent the unauthorized use of the track.

This legal action follows Oluwole’s 2022 threat to sue Sinach during a live video session with popular social commentator Daddy Freeze. At the time, Oluwole alleged he had been sidelined and vowed to seek redress.

Sinach, through her lawyer Emeka Etiaba (SAN), maintains she is the sole creator of ‘Way Maker.’ Her team asserts that she wrote, arranged, and performed the song long before Oluwole was engaged.

According to her defense, Oluwole’s role was limited to mixing and mastering the final version, for which he was paid $300. They argue that his involvement does not entitle him to royalties or copyright claims.

In contrast, Oluwole’s lawyer, Justin Ige, argues that the absence of a formal agreement between the two parties bolsters his client’s case. He highlights Nigerian copyright law, which can favour contributors in situations lacking clear contractual terms. This legal ambiguity has become a focal point in the lawsuit, raising critical questions about rights and compensation in the music industry.

The ongoing dispute has sparked debate about intellectual property rights and fair compensation in Nigeria’s creative sector. Many observers believe the case could set a crucial precedent for addressing similar conflicts, especially in an industry where informal collaborations are common.

As the court proceedings continue, the outcome will likely have lasting implications for artists, producers, and other creatives navigating the complex terrain of intellectual property in Nigeria.

Renowned gospel singer Sinach sold out the 15,000-capacity OVO Wembley Arena on July 6, 2024, in a historic concert that drew a global audience. This landmark event, dubbed “Victory Sounds,” etched her name in history and featured a star-studded lineup of gospel artists, including Da’dra Greathouse, Ada Ehi, Philippa Hannah, Limoblaze, Israel Houghton, Lucy Grimble, and Warehouse Worship.

Sinach performed at the Wembley Arena concert on Sunday, July 7, 2024, delivering a powerful and spirit-filled performance that captivated the packed arena. Fans sang along to her hit songs like “Way Maker,” “I Know Who I Am,” and “Victory is My Name.” The sold-out concert marked a significant milestone in Sinach’s career, showcasing her far-reaching impact and profound connection with her fans worldwide.

The Gosgem-powered event was a celebration of Sinach’s music and message of victory. Expressing her heartfelt gratitude to her fans, Sinach stated, “I am overwhelmed and deeply grateful for the love and support shown by everyone who attended the Victory Sounds concert. Tems have won accolades and set milestones in a short amount of time in the music industry. As the first African woman to win Best International Act at the 2022 BET Awards, the singer made history in June 2022.

Following her successes, she worked internationally with Beyonce, Drake, Future, and Rihanna.

Tems released her debut single, “Mr Rebel,” which she produced herself, in 2018 after quitting her job to pursue a career in music.

Simi

Simi, a multi-award-winning Nigerian singer, made history in July 2022 when she became the first female artist to exceed 100 million streams on Boomplay.

The beautiful mother of one emerged into the limelight in 2014 with her track ‘Tiff,’ establishing herself as a tremendously brilliant songwriter and performer.

Sinach

Secular Nigerian music always gets the most attention, but gospel artist Sinach made a big statement for gospel singers in Nigeria and Africa in 2020 when she became the first African Christian Musician to top Billboard’s Christian songwriter charts for 7 weeks in a row.

Sinach made history in September 2019 when she became the first gospel performer from Africa to tour India, leading events that drew thousands of people.

In October 2020, “Way Maker” won the Dove Award for Song of the Year at the 51st GMA Dove Awards in the United States. She was the first Nigerian gospel artist to win the award.

In August 2021, the song won the BMI Song of the year; a first for an African Gospel song.

On 7 March 2019, the video reached 100 million views, making Sinach the first Nigerian gospel singer and the third Nigerian singer overall to accomplish the feat.

Sinach began songwriting when she was 19 years old and began singing as a hobby in 1989.

Tiwa Savage

The “Kele Kele” singer made history in 2018 when she won the MTV European Music Awards’ Best African Act category for the first time.

At the tender age of 16, the vocalist made her professional debut in the music industry by providing backup vocals for several American artists, including Kelly Clarkson, Mary J. Blige, Andrea Bucelli, George Michel, Blu Chantell, and Chaka Chan.

Yemi Alade

The O2, a multi-purpose indoor venue with 20,000 seats, has hosted and sold out some of the largest performances by just a few Nigerian musicians, and here are the top 5 Nigerian female musicians who can fill the O2 Arena

Her first single, “Eyé Adaba,” was beginning to get airplay in Nigeria, Aṣa soon signed to Naïve Records.

Partnered with Cobhams Asuquo, and with the new involvement of Christophe Dupouy and Benjamin Constant, she produced her first platinum-selling self-titled album, Aṣa.

Yemi Alade 

Yemi Eberechi Alade, known by her fans by the stage name Yemi Alade was born on the 13th of March 1989 in Abia State, Nigeria.

She started her music career in 2005 but became famous after winning the Peak Talent Show in 2009.

One of the songs that got her to the top chart was “Johnny,” which has received over 20 million views on YouTube.

Yemi Alade sits in the second position on our list with an estimated net worth of $4.2 million.

Sinach

Nigerian Gospel singer, Sinach has not just made a name for gospel singers in the country but also for female singers too.

Secular artists aren’t the only persons to have enjoyed International collaborations, Nigerian Gospel Artists have also gotten the benefit of working with International Gospel Artists to produce spirit-filled songs.

In most cases, there is no room for competitiveness in Christiandom, and the major reason why artists from various regions gather together is to spread the gospel more effectively.

There have been times when Nigerian gospel artists have been able to include non-African performers in their songs, which has aided in the dissemination of the kingdom’s message and improved relations between the two countries.

To commemorate some of these outstanding events, this list honours the top 10 Nigerian and International Gospel collaborations.

Nara – Tim Godfrey / Travis Greene

The number one slot on this list belongs to the 2018 AGMA Worship Song of the Year. Tim Godfrey of ROX Nation teamed up with award-winning international crooner Travis Greene to create an award-winning hit that captivated the Christian community.

SMJ produced the tune, which won multiple prizes including AGAFEST and AGMA Song of the Year in 2018.

The song currently has over 60 Million views on Youtube.

This God is too Good- Nathaniel Bassey / Micah Stampley

Nathaniel Bassey, one of Africa’s most prolific worshipers and singer-songwriters, who has blessed the world with a plethora of inspirational songs from his heart, finally released his first international collaboration titled “This God is Too Good” with singer Micah Stampley in 2017.

The song, however, was overshadowed by another of his songs, Onise Iyanu, which was released later.

Ka Anyi Bulie Gi Elu- Frank Edwards / Don Moen

On the way to releasing his album Frankincense in 2016, Rock Town Music founder and rich boy Frank Edwards released a track named Ka Anyi Bulie Gi Elu with renowned gospel phenomenal performer Don Moen, which means “Lets lift you (God) high” in the native Igbo language of Nigeria.

Na You- Dunsin Oyekan / Kim Burrel

Following his success with the song Na You while serving as the National Music Director of the Common Wealth of Zion Assembly [COZA], seasoned Music Minister Dunsin Oyekan collaborates with exceptional vocalist and pastor Kim Burrel in a remix that nearly overshadows the original.

The duo then sang the song together for the latter’s debut ministration in Nigeria at The Experience 2016.

Frank’s album Frankincense, which features Micah Stampley, Don Moen, and Nathaniel Bassey, was released in 2016 and wowed everyone when it topped Beyonce’s and Adele’s albums on the iTunes album chart within a few hours of its release.

Baba, which features 2004 Stellar Award winner Micah Stampley, is one of the album’s tracks. The song, however, had little impact on the Nigerian gospel music charts, although it still made the top ten.

Nigerian gospel singer and songwriter Osinachi Kalu Okoro Egbu, known professionally as Sinach, has set a new career record on the top US Billboard charts.

The singer has becomes the first African gospel singer to top the Billboard Christian Songwriter Chart in the United States of America.

Sinach has been topping the American charts, Billboard’s charts of Christian songwriters for seven weeks and did not even realize it.

She made the announcement of her new career fit via her social media page, expressing gratitude to God for another milestone in her career.

Sinach celebrates her 50th birthday today, March 30th, and has lavished herself with love.

The gospel singer is now on holiday in Dominica, where she intends to commemorate her ascension to the fifth floor.

Taking to her Instagram page, she wrote, “A million tongues would never be enough. To tell all You have done With Everything within my very soul. I say thank you Jesus. You are faithful. You are good”.
