These Fuji artists, just like today’s top mainstream performers, have a massive, devoted fan base.

These Fuji artists have been working in the field for various amounts of time; some of them have been around since the 1960s, while others entered it much more recently.

What follows is a list of the five best Fuji bands and musicians.

At one time, his music was frowned upon because of the crudeness of his lyrics.

Fuji’s Abass Obesere sounds like a cross between Terry G and Naira Marley from the ’90s.

Zlatan was included in a new remix of one of his hit songs, “Egungun be Careful.”

3) Remi Aluko

He carved up a name for himself by adapting popular Christian and hip-hop tunes to Fuji style.

Even those who dismissed Fuji music as “gutter music” were captivated by Remi Aluko’s performance.

He became famous by popularizing Fuji among listeners who would never have considered it before.

2) Pasuma Wonder

In any discussion of Fuji, Pasuma is bound to come up at some point.

Since the early 1990s, when he first began singing Fuji music, Wasiu Alabi Ajibola has built himself a solid reputation and risen to the very pinnacle of his field.

He did this, in part, by incorporating hip hop into his music. Even die-hard Fuji aficionados have taken notice of this.

“Paso,” as he is also known, has worked with several other Nigeian musicians and visual artists beyond the borders of Fuji. You may recognize names like Eedris Abdulkareem, Ruggedman, and Olamide among these performers.

As a Fuji artist, he is also present on the web with his own webpage and many social media accounts.

1) K1 De Ultimate

Some people consider King Wasiu Ayinde Marshall (KWAM) to be the rightful ruler of Fuji.

He carried on the legacy of the late Sikiru Ayinde Barrister (the “father of Fuji”) by raising the bar for subsequent Fuji practitioners.

From the ’60s to the present day, KWAM 1 has become synonymous with the sound of the era. Wasiu’s visage readily comes to mind whenever the Fuji business sector is mentioned.

Fans of his music continue to sing along to Talazo.

Most parent hopes and wishes that at least one of their children would pursue a career in the same field as them, and even better, that they will outperform them.

Several past Nigerian musicians nurtured their children to follow in their footsteps in the music industry, but only a handful of them have gone on to become larger stars.

Here is a list of some Nigerian artists who took after their parents.

Darey Art Alade

The Nigerian artist is the Son to Modupe Arthur Alade, popularly known as Art Alade was a famous Nigerian highlife/jazz artist in the sixties and seventies.

Darey is noted for his lyric writing and unique musical style, and he has written hit songs such as Not the Girl, Style na Style, Follow me Go, and many others.

Femi Kuti

Femi Kuti is an internationally acclaimed Afrobeat artist and the son of Fela Anikulapo Kuti, the Abami eda himself.

He is one of Nigeria’s most successful musicians. With several Grammy nominations, his song was used in GTA IV and was sampled by a number of international artists, including Jayz and Jcole.

Since the founding of his band ” Positive force” in the 1980s, he has been keeping the Nigerian flag flying.

Barry Jhay

Barry Jhay comes from a succession of Nigerian music royalty. The singer’s father is Sikiru Ayinde Barrister. He coined his stage name, Barry Jhay, from his father’s name. Barry Jhay simply stands for Barrister Junior.

Ayinde Barrister was a Yoruba singer/songwriter and music performer. He is regarded as the pioneer of Fuji music. After his first break into music in 1965, Ayinde Barrister went on to release over 70 studio albums.

A national award recipient, Barrister died on December 16, 2010.

His grandfather was Isaiah Kehinde Dairo, popularly known as IK Dairo. The late singer, IK Dairo was a notable Nigerian Jùjú musician who was a Member of the Order of the British Empire. An MBE is the third highest-ranking Order of the British Empire award.

He is also the nephew of veteran singer, Paul Play Dairo.

Gabriel Afolayan (GFresh)

Gabriel Afolayan is the son of Sir Adeyemi Josiah Afolayan, also known as Ade-Love who was an actor and musician famous for the Hit Single Taxi Driver and Iya ni Wura.

Gabriel, who is also an actor, is well known for his hit singles “Kokoro Ife” and “Awelewa“, and has gained popularity in the Industry.

Paul Play

Rapper and “Angel of My Life” Crooner is the son of Isaiah Kehinde Dairo, better known by his stage name I.K Dairo, a well-known Juju singer who dominated the Nigerian music scene from the 1960s to the late 1980s.

The singer is recognized for songs such as Mo so rire, a remake of his father’s big tune, happy day, Forever, and was one of the artists who performed when Bill Clinton visited Nigeria in 2003.

Fuji, one of the more historically notable Nigerian Genres of music was born out of an Islamic form of music in southwestern Nigerian called Were/Ajisari.

This music was used to wake Muslims up during Ramadan fast. The origins of the genre “Fuji” date back to sometime during the 1960s.

The reform of Were/Ajisari into Fuji is credited to Alhaji Sikiru Ayinde Barrister, who released his debut LP in 1966. According to Wikipedia, the name Fui was born after Barrister saw a poster at an airport, advertising Mount Fuji, which is the highest peak in Japan.

In one of his early albums, Sikiru Ayinde Barrister described fújì music as a combination of music consisting of sákárà, Apala, jùjú, Aro, Afrobeat, gudugudu, and some elements of highlife.

Kollington Ayinla, another pioneer alongside the aforementioned was influential in the growth of the genre through the 70s.

By the 80s, the genre had become very popular across the region with the likes of King Wasiu Ayinde Marshal (KWAM 1) being credited for modernising the music and later in the 90s, Abas Akande Obesere through his introduction of “Asakasa” or Street slang.

Today, the influence of fuji music is littered all around Nigerian pop music, with the likes of artists like Olamide, Teni, Naira Marley and others constantly introducing and sampling fuji melodies into their sounds and even collaborating with fuji musicians.

Opotoyi-Naira Marley

“Opotoyi” was released in 2019 and was one of the hit songs Naira Marley put out during that period. The song was produced by his in house producer, Rexxie.

However many won’t realize is that the song was sampled from one of Popular fuji star, Obesere’s songs, “Papa Wordwide”. Obesere was a rebel in the fuji genre whose style of music and lyrics was a bit different from his contemporaries.

DJ Tunez ft Adekunle Gold- My Love

DJ Tunez and Adekunle Gold partnered together in 2017. This record was DJ Tunez first single in that year and it was produced by Del’B.

Adekunle Gold brings in Happiness, Love moments, Beauty and Perfection on this tune. His delivery and enchanting lyrics will surely have everyone clamouring for love this summer.

Gold’s lyrics were sampled from KWAM 1’s “Can’t Just Stop Thinking About You”

Japa- Naira Marley

Naira Marley is an avid fan of Fuji and his songs is a testament to that fact. “Japa” was released in 2018 and produced by Rexxie. Part of its lyrics is sampled from Obesere’s American Faaji Series.

Another song that samples Obesere’s is Olamide’s 2017 Shanko Baby.

Anifowshe- Olamide

To go down memory lane of his struggle to fame, Olamide release “Anifowshe” in 2013. The smooth song samples KWAM 1’s Anifowhse which was released off his Orin Abode Mecca medley album in 1980.

Pxta- Naira Marley

Pxta or “Puta” was released in 2019 and produced by Rexxie. The song samples Obesere’s “Obutun” released in 2002.

Askamaya- Teni

As the saying goes, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, such is the case of this talented singer.

I am sure the name Sikiru Ayinde Barrister sounds familiar, well if it doesn’t I am sure this song “Reality” will help. However, he is the father of the fast-rising singer Barry Jhay.

No wonder, he has that fuji-like tune and a blend of Afro Juju, like his dad.

Darey Art-Alade

Barry Jhay is currently facing trouble due to the death of his record label boss, Babatunde Oyerinde Abiodun, also known as Kashy Godson.

It was reported that the singer was arrested by the Ghanaian police in connection with the death of his boss.

Unknown to some people, the singer comes from a succession of Nigerian music royalty.  Weeks ago, he took to his Instagram account to reveal that his grandfather was Isaiah Kehinde Dairo, popularly known as IK Dairo.

Born February 9th, 1948 in Ibadan, Oyo State,  Sikiru Ayinde Balogun better known as Barrister is one of the pioneers of the great fuji and were music.

Later, he proceeded to Yaba College of Technology where he studied typing and commercial-related courses.

As a young ‘ajiwere’ singer during the period of Ramadan, Ayinde Barrister started displaying his musical talent.

He fell in love with music and was seen as a shining star to many.

However, during the Nigerian civil war, he had a change of profession and had to serve his motherland.

He was appointed as the clerk during the war under the leadership of Col Adeniran and fought in Awka, Abagana, and Onitsha.

Upon his arrival from war, he resigned from the army to concentrate on being a full-time musician.

Ayinde Barrister released his first LP record in the year 1966. He majorly played with his band around Lagos.

Most of his clients were Muslims at that time, and his major base was around Ebute-Meta of Lagos.

Also, he released records under the African Songs Ltd before starting his own label Siky-Oluyole Records.

Here are some of the records/albums he released under African songs Ltd;

•  “Bisimilahi” came in the year (1977)
• “Ile Aiye Dun Pupo/Love In Tokyo” released in the year (1976).

Later, Ayinde Barrister and Fuji music had become accepted by all religions in the country.

In the early 80s, he released a couple of other albums such as;

• Iwa (1982)
• Nigeria (1983)
• Fuji Garbage (1988)  
• New Fuji Garbage (1993)

All of which was under his record label.

With Fuji Music, Barrister revolutionized Yoruba music while still projecting traditional values of good behaviour, respect for elders and the struggles against life’s forces.

To his name, Ayinde Barrister has earned so many notable awards during his lifetime and music career.

However, the most remarkable is the conferment of the honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR).

This was presented by the then President Olusegun Obasanjo in the year 2006.

The honour is believed to be based on the Precaution album which he released in the year 1995.

However, When the news of his death hit the airwaves in 2010, a number of fans were thrown into mourning.

Likewise, they also celebrated the life and achievements of the Fuji music pioneer.

Over a decade ago the singer still lives on in the mind and hearts of loved ones and fans.

Honour is due to the man who spent his entire life giving us the best of the best fuji songs of his time.

Today, the legend will have clocked 73 years old.
