The Fuji musical style is widely heard in Nigeria. New Fuji artists continuously emerge, but the big five have remained constant throughout the genre’s history and remain untouchable now.

These Fuji artists, just like today’s top mainstream performers, have a massive, devoted fan base.

These Fuji artists have been working in the field for various amounts of time; some of them have been around since the 1960s, while others entered it much more recently.

What follows is a list of the five best Fuji bands and musicians.

5) Obesere

Obsere

At one time, his music was frowned upon because of the crudeness of his lyrics.

Fuji’s Abass Obesere sounds like a cross between Terry G and Naira Marley from the ’90s.

Zlatan was included in a new remix of one of his hit songs, “Egungun be Careful.”

To avoid any possible controversy, we at Mp3bullet.ng must admit that the unaltered version of “Egungun be Careful” is superior to the remixed one.

4) Saheed Osupa

Saheed Osupa

His former colleagues hated him because the late Barrister had referred to him as “the king of Fuji,” and this led to a major scandal.

The majority of people didn’t think he earned the honor.

Pasuma, another top Fuji artist, has been a fierce rival of Saidi Akorede Okunola.

Saheed Osupa has proven his doubters wrong with hit after hit like “Respect,” cementing his status as a Fuji music superstar.

3) Remi Aluko

Remi Aluko

He carved up a name for himself by adapting popular Christian and hip-hop tunes to Fuji style.

Even those who dismissed Fuji music as “gutter music” were captivated by Remi Aluko’s performance.

He became famous by popularizing Fuji among listeners who would never have considered it before.

2) Pasuma Wonder

Pasuma

In any discussion of Fuji, Pasuma is bound to come up at some point.

Since the early 1990s, when he first began singing Fuji music, Wasiu Alabi Ajibola has built himself a solid reputation and risen to the very pinnacle of his field.

He did this, in part, by incorporating hip hop into his music. Even die-hard Fuji aficionados have taken notice of this.

“Paso,” as he is also known, has worked with several other Nigeian musicians and visual artists beyond the borders of Fuji. You may recognize names like Eedris Abdulkareem, Ruggedman, and Olamide among these performers.

As a Fuji artist, he is also present on the web with his own webpage and many social media accounts.

1) K1 De Ultimate

KWAM 1

Some people consider King Wasiu Ayinde Marshall (KWAM) to be the rightful ruler of Fuji.

He carried on the legacy of the late Sikiru Ayinde Barrister (the “father of Fuji”) by raising the bar for subsequent Fuji practitioners.

From the ’60s to the present day, KWAM 1 has become synonymous with the sound of the era. Wasiu’s visage readily comes to mind whenever the Fuji business sector is mentioned.

Fans of his music continue to sing along to Talazo.

What other people do you think deserve to be here but weren’t? Leave a comment, tell us what you think.

Some Nigerian artists didn’t just discover music by chance but because their parents were actually musicians.

Most parent hopes and wishes that at least one of their children would pursue a career in the same field as them, and even better, that they will outperform them.

Several past Nigerian musicians nurtured their children to follow in their footsteps in the music industry, but only a handful of them have gone on to become larger stars.

Fuji, one of the more historically notable Nigerian Genres of music was born out of an Islamic form of music in southwestern Nigerian called Were/Ajisari.

This music was used to wake Muslims up during Ramadan fast. The origins of the genre “Fuji” date back to sometime during the 1960s.

The reform of Were/Ajisari into Fuji is credited to Alhaji Sikiru Ayinde Barrister, who released his debut LP in 1966. According to Wikipedia, the name Fui was born after Barrister saw a poster at an airport, advertising Mount Fuji, which is the highest peak in Japan.

In one of his early albums, Sikiru Ayinde Barrister described fújì music as a combination of music consisting of sákárà, Apala, jùjú, Aro, Afrobeat, gudugudu, and some elements of highlife.

Kollington Ayinla, another pioneer alongside the aforementioned was influential in the growth of the genre through the 70s.

By the 80s, the genre had become very popular across the region with the likes of King Wasiu Ayinde Marshal (KWAM 1) being credited for modernising the music and later in the 90s, Abas Akande Obesere through his introduction of “Asakasa” or Street slang.

Today, the influence of fuji music is littered all around Nigerian pop music, with the likes of artists like Olamide, Teni, Naira Marley and others constantly introducing and sampling fuji melodies into their sounds and even collaborating with fuji musicians.

Notably, almost everyone must have heard the name “Anikulapo-Kuti” before. Whether in a bar, street, park, wherever.

However, not everybody may be familiar with the lineage of the name and its impact on the music industry.

Well, the great man to promote that name is no other than the legendary Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.

While addressing the originators of Afrobeats in Nigeria and the world at large, he is considered a founding father.

However, he did not only stop at making good music but also passing the gene to two of his children, Namely Femi Anikulapo Kuti, and Seun Anikulapo Kuti.

Both of them are part of Nigeria’s finest Afrobeat music makers we have today.

Likewise, to their record, they have released various albums and bagged nominations and awards, both locally and internationally.

Barry Jhay is currently facing trouble due to the death of his record label boss, Babatunde Oyerinde Abiodun, also known as Kashy Godson.

It was reported that the singer was arrested by the Ghanaian police in connection with the death of his boss.

Unknown to some people, the singer comes from a succession of Nigerian music royalty. Weeks ago, he took to his Instagram account to reveal that his grandfather was Isaiah Kehinde Dairo, popularly known as IK Dairo.

The late singer, IK Dairo was a notable Nigerian Jùjú musician who was a Member of the Order of the British Empire. An MBE is the third highest-ranking Order of the British Empire award.

Celebrating his grandfather on Instagram, Barry Jhay posted a picture of his grandfather and wrote,

“Allow me share with you a little bit more about my background. In this picture, I have my grandpa, late IK Dairo. Swipe left read little about him or just Google the name. But mom I never knew grandpa was a big boy o.

“I just know two rich kids brought me to life. It is painful I never met you. Mama and uncle always told me a lot about you. I tasted the culture spirituality, senses of good music and legacies you laid. I’m proud to be the son of your first daughter. I ride for you and dad till my last breathe. I love you so much grandpa. In my heart is where you stay.”

More so, the singer’s father is Sikiru Ayinde Barrister. He coined his stage name, Barry Jhay, from his father’s name. Barry Jhay simply stands for Barrister Junior.

Ayinde Barrister was a Yoruba singer/songwriter and music performer. He is regarded as the pioneer of Fuji music. After his first break into music in 1965, Ayinde Barrister went on to release over 70 studio albums.

Barrister who was a national award recipient died on December 16, 2010.

Celebrating his father posthumous birthday via his Instagram account the singer wrote, “Dad, I think about you every day. I miss you more than you can ever imagine. Today you would have been 73… your legend lives on and I promise to always make you proud. Lion no Dey born dog.”

A decade after his father’s death, Barry Jhay, eulogized the late fuji singer. “10 years without you has been hell papi, but you never left for a second. I went through fire for some reasons that I benefit from now I don’t really wanna say too much, because if I start I fit write a whole book for you. Thank you for being my strength, my spiritual friend, the man in me, my MINIGOD.

“I’m proud to call you Dad! Rest on KING OF MY HEART. Daddy I say rest o I no say sleep. I wish you were here to see what a big baby I have become, life would have been more fair I learnt too much, I would still be touching your head and your belly as I use to while you were here, I’m pained but I’m strong for you I’m in this for you and my child for life. KING ON BEST MAN,”(sic)

As a young ‘ajiwere’ singer during the period of Ramadan, Ayinde Barrister started displaying his musical talent.

He fell in love with music and was seen as a shining star to many.

However, during the Nigerian civil war, he had a change of profession and had to serve his motherland.

He was appointed as the clerk during the war under the leadership of Col Adeniran and fought in Awka, Abagana, and Onitsha.

Upon his arrival from war, he resigned from the army to concentrate on being a full-time musician.

Ayinde Barrister released his first LP record in the year 1966. He majorly played with his band around Lagos.

Most of his clients were Muslims at that time, and his major base was around Ebute-Meta of Lagos.

Also, he released records under the African Songs Ltd before starting his own label Siky-Oluyole Records.

Here are some of the records/albums he released under African songs Ltd;

“Bisimilahi” came in the year (1977)

“Ile Aiye Dun Pupo/Love In Tokyo” released in the year (1976).

Later, Ayinde Barrister and Fuji music had become accepted by all religions in the country.

In the early 80s, he released a couple of other albums such as;

Iwa (1982)

Nigeria (1983)

Fuji Garbage (1988)

New Fuji Garbage (1993)

All of which was under his record label.

With Fuji Music, Barrister revolutionized Yoruba music while still projecting traditional values of good behaviour, respect for elders and the struggles against life’s forces.

To his name, Ayinde Barrister has earned so many notable awards during his lifetime and music career.

However, the most remarkable is the conferment of the honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR).

This was presented by the then President Olusegun Obasanjo in the year 2006.

The honour is believed to be based on the Precaution album which he released in the year 1995.

However, When the news of his death hit the airwaves in 2010, a number of fans were thrown into mourning.

Likewise, they also celebrated the life and achievements of the Fuji music pioneer.

Over a decade ago the singer still lives on in the mind and hearts of loved ones and fans.

Honour is due to the man who spent his entire life giving us the best of the best fuji songs of his time.

Today, the legend will have clocked 73 years old.

It’s actually not a crime to enjoy the music of the past, but what music will our generation be associated with?

Fela Anikulapo Kuti

Whenever I listen to Fela Kuti Anikulapo‘s songs or one of the old jams, I smile and ask myself, “Are any of this modern-day music going to have a lasting impact in society?” Almost all that Fela addressed in his “Beast of No Nation” is still happening today and whenever you listen to it, you’ll think they just release it a week ago because of its relevancy.

When compared to modern Music, old music is leagues ahead. It doesn’t matter what you enjoy listening to but the truth remains that music has gone downhill since 2010.

https://mp3bullet.ng/5-nigerian-songs-that-will-calm-you-down-when-you-listen-to-them/

It’s easy to tell the kids of today how impactful the songs of Fela, Lucky Dube, Bob Marley, and even Alhaji Agba (Dr. Sikiru Ayinde Barrister) were to our society. But are today’s kids going to say the same to their kids with this our music?

Music these days are not lyrically good, it is just only about good beats, rather than having an enduring impact on the world at large.

Money has a negative impact on this and it’s what turns music to business rather than an art. Corporate titans largely influence studios and bands. Artists compromise integrity for a more lucrative payday even though it may take the band in a completely different direction.

The beat is not the only thing that makes a song truly great. Let’s forget hype, sales and chart success. A good song must transcend time, convey strong emotions, shift culture, and resonate with a large number of people.

Sure, some top artists these days make amazing music, like Falz the bahd guy, Brymo, Wizkid, Davido, Olamide, Burna Boy, among others, but will these modern-day musicians go down in history as legends?

Perhaps Wizkid will, but will you be proud to tell your kids you grew up listening to Wizkid? What happened to the immortal rock bands like Bongos Ikwue and the Groovies, Fela and his band.

Bands and artists of the past used to make statements of importance and incorporate influential and difficult topics into their music.

Think of Onyeka Onwenu, Africa China, 2Baba, Asa. Their songs are not just about hollow subjects. They sang about things with deeper meaning.

For instance, in 2Baba’s ‘E be like say,’ these are the lyrics:

See, all I want to say is that
They don’t really care about us
Because all they want to do is to get in touch with big bucks
Because they think the money gives them the power
But the power is nothing
If your people cannot get quality education
The power is nothing
If your people keep on dying of disease and starvation
The power is nothing
If your people have no peace (no peace)
The power is nothing
If your people cannot live in unity (eh)
See, why do you keep deceiving the people, my brother, my sister
See, why you make all this people to dey fight one another
Only God can judge you now [x4]
Another year has come
And now you want my vote once more
Oh no

Where is that in today’s “popular” music? Compare this to the brilliant mind of Naira Marley, whose lyrics in “Opotoyi” are:

Aya kinkini, bi obo Tiger
Sexy girl, je kin gbori si e laya
Papa e bi ti sugar, mo ti fe da, obo yen dun bi sugar
Da kin to da, o ni kin je kin oun mo kin to da
La nkan to fe la, je kan mo pe aiye la bola

What’s the message in some of Naira Marley, Zlatan, Baddo, or Davido songs?

For the sake of our generation and in order to build a saner society, let’s hope that artists will return to the roots of music and perform heartfelt tunes that can make the world a better place, not a more egoistical one.

Producing music is not just about making money, it’s about changing society for better.

Music is an art.

–Yusuff
