Veteran Nigerian rapper Eedris Abdulkareem has once again aimed sharp criticism at President Bola Tinubu, labeling him a devoted father to his son Seyi Tinubu but a disappointing leader to the broader Nigerian populace.

In a recent interview on Channels Television, the outspoken music icon opened up about the inspiration behind his controversial track “Tell Your Papa”—a politically charged song that has sparked widespread conversations online. Eedris said he was moved to write the song after watching a clip of Seyi Tinubu repeatedly praising his father’s presidency.

“I saw Seyi in a clip calling his father the best president five or six times,” Eedris recounted. “Honestly, Seyi is more impressive when he stays quiet. He should’ve let the MC do the talking. He lacks the presence to address the real issues facing Nigerians.”

Eedris didn’t hold back as he contrasted President Tinubu’s devotion to his family with what he described as negligence toward the nation.

The interview follows the ban of “Tell Your Papa” by the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), which declared the song unfit for public broadcast, citing Section 3.1.8 of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code for promoting content deemed offensive or not in line with public decency.

However, the ban hasn’t stopped the momentum. “Tell Your Papa” remains a trending topic across social media, with Nigerians debating its hard-hitting lyrics and the uncomfortable realities it exposes.

As the track continues to gain online traction, Eedris Abdulkareem stands by his message — using his music as a megaphone for the people and a challenge to those in power.

In an official memo dated April 9, 2025, the NBC labeled the song “unsuitable for public broadcast,” referencing Section 3.1.8 of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code. According to the commission, the lyrics contain “objectionable” material that fails to align with responsible broadcasting values.

“The National Broadcasting Commission has flagged the song ‘Tell Your Papa’ by Eedris Abdulkareem as inappropriate for broadcast,” the directive stated, urging all stations nationwide to avoid airing the track.

Tell Your Papa takes direct aim at Seyi Tinubu, son of Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The song confronts Seyi’s public endorsement of his father as “the greatest president in Nigeria’s history” and demands that he acknowledge the everyday suffering of citizens and relay their pain to his father.

The track calls out issues such as economic hardship and national insecurity—sparking both praise and controversy.

This isn’t Abdulkareem’s first tango with censorship. His iconic 2004 track Jaga Jaga, a raw critique of Nigeria’s systemic failures, was similarly banned—earning him both backlash and respect as a fearless voice in Nigerian music.

The “OBO” crooner claimed that his father had told him in a vision that he would become a gospel musician in the end. During a conversation with a few guests at his wedding on Tuesday, Davido revealed this.
