When Nigerian Rapper, Ladipoe first surfaced on the internet, he used to be known as Poe. After he signed into Mavin Records, his name was changed to Ladipoe which he currently uses to date.

A year on from the release of her glittering debut, Amaarae ‘s music is topping global charts.

In the past week alone, her genre-defying debut album ‘The Angel You Don’t Know’ has gained her new levels of recognition days from celebrating its one-year anniversary.

While it’s a warming moment for the genre-bending singer and rapper, for many who have been paying close attention since ‘Passionfruit Summers’, this current moment has been imminently approaching for while now.

This week, Amaarae’s expansive catalog of music has been all the rave. Off the back of her globe-throttling appearances, which found her live at the Pitchfork fest and gracing stages from the United States to London and Europe for her CRAZY WURLD tour, the Ghanaian-American singer and rapper are now reaping the rewards of years of hard work, which have only been made more feasible due to her gargantuan ambitions.

The remix to her standout single “SAD GURLZ LUV MONEY” ft. Moliy and Kali Uchis is steadily gaining traction on charts around the world, months from its initial release.

Over the past few days alone, Amaarae has moved up from a few thousand videos using her song on TikTok to racking in over a million videos.

Alongside this, she’s shot to the summit of the Shazam US charts this week after making her debut on the chart only a few weeks ago.

To sweeten this moment even further, the record has gone to the top of other global charts including No.1 on the global Spotify Viral 50 chart, No. 12 on the Billboard World Albums chart, and No.5 on the Billboard Bubbling Under Hot 100.

In one single day, the Kali Uchis-assisted number did a clean sweep across streaming platforms, garnering over 2 million streams on Spotify alone, a sizeable amount of streams for an African artist, particularly one who is operating independently and without any major label backing.

This feat is certainly one worth celebrating, particularly as a female African artist operating outside the tenets and boundaries of the male-centered music industry.

Already, listeners and loyal fans are already calling for Amaarae’s blueprint to be followed to a tee as she embarks on this new stage of her career, but what these comments fail to take into account is the fact that success rarely happens overnight.

Three years ago, the alternative scene was buzzing with some of the newest and brightest stars in the current Afropop vanguard.

From Lagos to Accra and Johannesburg, an emerging class of new acts were bypassing industry gatekeepers and making music that met the demand for something new and different.

Amaarae was one of such names making headlines, alongside the boys of La Même Gang from Ghana.

At the time, her melody-driven sound and fettered authenticity were both ammunition used to fuel polarising conversations against the validity of her music, but these debates have only quelled as she’s risen to the top, off the back of her own distinct sound.

Amaarae has always been an adventurous artist and a risk-taker. Right from ‘Passionfruit Summers’, the singer and rapper have set a vast tone for where she is able to go sonically and lyrically.

She carried this on throughout the years, first delivering a string of unmissable singles and collaborations such as the Cruel Santino-assisted “Rapid Fire”, “LIKE IT” and “Spend Some Time” featuring Wande Coal to the release of her genre-defying debut ‘The Angel You Don’t Know,’

Her Similar to Omah Lay who has established himself as one of Nigeria’s most promising contemporary artists all within the space of a year to Tems who continues to break boundaries unknown to many women in Afropop to even CKay whose smash hit “Love Nwantiti” is making head waves across the world, it is ostensibly clear that Afropop is witnessing its defining moment, all bolstered by its new vanguard of hitmakers.

Amaarae is definitely in great company as she now joins the ranks of African artists who have topped global charts this year and introduced a new template of authenticity and self-confidence to the current soundscape.

Perhaps Amaarae’s crowning moment was destined all along–it was only a matter of time. Anyone who knows their salt on the music industry is aware of the reach and impact that Latin artists have on music with their English-speaking counterparts.

With the Yinka Bernie-produced single “SAD GURLZ LUV MONEY,” Amaarae’s music is finally collecting real estate and reverence as it rightly should. Currently, she’s one of the few African artists operating in a lane entirely of their own making.

With the visibility that this traction will offer Amaaraee, it’s clear that the singer is being ushered into the next phase of her career, one where she sheds her rookie status for veteran tendencies.

The Nigerian Alternative Music Singer, Osayaba Andrew Ize-Iyamu who is professionally known as cruel Santino(and has also performed as Ozzy B and Santi) is set to unveil his new second studio album titled “Subaru Boys”.

Santi, who is at the forefront of the genre-hopping Nigerian Alté movement which employed a streamlined blend of Nigerian roots music, dancehall, processed rap, and R&B, took to his Instagram page to reveal information about his upcoming album.

Ozzy B’s incoming album titled “Subaru Boys” is expected to drop on the 22nd of October 2021.

He released a few mixtapes under the Ozzy B moniker, including Suzie’s Funeral in 2016, before switching to the Santi moniker for Mandy & the Jungle album in 2019, which he featured DRAM, Tay Iwar, Shane Eagle, Kida Kudz, and GoldLink, among others.

In June of 2020, he debuted as Cruel Santino with the track “End of the Wicked,” after signing to Interscope and launching his Monster Boy brand.

Recall, Mp3bullet.ng reported that singer teased that the upcoming album will feature Ghanaian-American singer Amaarae, Jamaican superstar Koffee, and Nigerian rapper Maison2500 in a previous post.

Santi mentioned in a recent Instagram post about the new album that his goal was to create a “universe” so intense that if the listener stopped listening to the record, they would immediately feel as if they were no longer in the “Subaru world.”

In the West, alternative music is more often connected with the rough, anti-pop movement that emerged during the early 1990s.

Alternative musicians were categorized by their unconventional and raw approach to music, as well as their dark and distinct anti-establishment aesthetic and controversiality.

Over the years, the term has expanded to mean any sub-genre of an established sound whether in rock, hip-hop, pop, etc.

Since music DSPs like Spotify have democratized the process of making and sharing music, it has become much easier for norm-breaking musicians to garner an audience for themselves.

One such genre that Initially owes its exposure to the internet is Nigerian “Alté” (stylized from “alternative”) music.

However, the artists belonging to this group differ greatly in style and general acceptance,  it generally combines a variety of genres including, R&B, rap, indie, and dancehall.

Alté invalidates the perception that African music can be boiled down to a single undifferentiated genre title, as it so often is by outsiders.

Alté artists are mainly concerned with both African culture and nostalgia, often drawing on a vintage lo-fi VHS style aesthetic for their music videos.

most artists are accredited with its inception including DRB Lasgidi members Teezee and BOJ, and members of the group, LOS.

However, artists like Santi, Odunsi, and Lady Donli have become synonymous and big with the genre.

Santi

Lagos-based artist Santi is perhaps the most famous member of this movement.

The artist’s sound is derived from an eclectic range of influences including everything from Drake and Lil Wayne to Vampire Weekend.

Santi got his start acting and freestyle rapping before releasing his first mixtape in 2011 entitled Diaries of a Loner. 

Since then, he has released several studio albums and compelling music videos that demonstrate his knack for visual storytelling.

Santi is also known to rap in pidgin-English, as he hopes to make it easier for people of a similar background to make it in the industry.

Odunsi The Engine

Odunsi gets to prominence in 2016 after he released his debut EP Time of Our Lives.

He comes from a challenging background having been kicked out of high school and dropping out of college, although he always found solace in making music.

Odunsi has come to define his sound as afro-fusion, which takes elements from R&B, reggae, EDM, and Soul.

Like his fellow Alté stars, Odunsi was able to find a fanbase by publishing his work on Soundcloud.

Within his music, he talks a lot about feeling like an outsider in the Nigerian music industry; a fact that has made his emergence more difficult, but that also he takes pride in.

Wavy the Creator

This artist is well aware of how much she stands out from the crowd.

From her eccentric, story-driven music to her quirky fashion sense, Wavy the Creator, or “alien” as she often refers to herself as truly marches to the beat of her own drum.

She is quite the renaissance woman having done work in photography, film-making, and fashion design, in addition to music.

Music was actually a late addition to the artist’s long list of talents, as she recorded her first song while working as a personal photographer to another musician.

Her aesthetic consists mostly of afro-futurism and retro references.

This is apparent in the singles “Shaku” (2018) and “Body Deep” (2019), as well as in their accompanying music videos.

Ama Rae

Ghanian singer-songwriter, Ama Rae is known for delving into taboo subjects like sex and gender fluidity within her music.

She has built her image with the help of powerhouse women of the past such as Billie Holliday and Stevie Nicks.

Her genre-bending music has been recognized by Apple music, while in addition, Vogue Magazine lauded her for her distinct fashion sense and signature buzzcut.

She has also received praise for challenging cultural norms, such as featuring drag queens and exotic dancers in her music video for “Like It” (2019).

Lady Donli

Lady Donli’s global upbringing, having lived in Ohio, Ajuba, and London, manifests itself in the range of her musical influences.

She pulls from African-American neo-soul, Fela Kuti’s afro beats, alternative jazz, and many more genres.

She debuted her album Enjoy Your Life in 2019, where all these influences were combined to produce a unique sound.

She describes the album as being decidedly “Nigerian,” although she strove to set herself apart from the Afropop typically associated with the country.

Teni

Outstanding songstress and songwriter Teni is the first artiste on our list!

As a matter of fact, Teni revealed to us the title and the month her fans should expect her new album.

She took to her social media page in the early days of February to reveal her album will be dropping this month of March and the title is “WONDALAND“.

However, she did not reveal the exact date the album will be dropping.

While we fold our arms and cross our legs, let us just hope she doesn’t play a Wizkid on us.

Santi

As of March 2nd, 2021 Nigerian alté singer Santi announced to his fans his forthcoming sophomore studio album.

While doing an Instagram live session with his fans, he played a snippet and revealed some artistes he features on his album.

Although he did not reveal the date nor month the album is dropping, but with such publicity, our hopes are high towards receiving it this month.

In addition, Santi is arguably one of the major players in the Nigerian alté scene.

Sinach

Gospel music act Sinach is also included amongst the artistes to watch out for her album this month.

As of the 12th of February, Sinach released a song titled “Greatest Lord“, which happens to be a song from her forthcoming album.

Uniquely, the title of the song is also the same with her that of her album. Co-incident? No!

Furthermore, on February 26th, she released another song from her forthcoming album titled “Beautiful“, featuring Nathaniel Bassey.

Having released two songs off her forthcoming album, what next? Your guess is the same as mine!

Peruzzi

DMW star Peruzzi has been playing Wizkid on us since 2020.

As he entered our list of artistes to drop their albums last month, he has entered this year likewise.

Since last year, he released his album track and the title as Rum and Boogie.

Also, this year he gave an update on that and geared us up to receive his album in February.

To our surprise, February has come and gone, yet no Rum and Boogie.

However, we hope he surprises his fans with his album this month.

Ruger

Jonzing World’s latest signee Ruger, surprised everyone as he put a presumable artwork for his album/EP.

He was unveiled on January 18 with his debut track “One Shirt” featuring D’Prince and his label mate, Rema.

Also, he recently released his second single titled “Ruger“.

Without much hesitation, he took to his social media page on the 2nd of March and displayed the artwork of a 6 tracklist EP/album.

However, he did not reveal the title nor the name of the project.

So, if he drops his project this month, it wouldn’t be bad!
