Music colleagues share their condolences.

Nigerian singer, Chuddy K announced the passing of his wife, Rachael, on Saturday evening after a long battle of cancer.

Sharing the news on his Instagram page, he wrote: “My queen is gone. I can’t believe am typing this. Never imagined a day like this would come so early. You fought hard for you life. You did not die of cancer . God called you cus he loves you more than I do. RIP Racheal my love. ????????????????”

This passing has plunged the music industry into a mourning state as the singer’s music colleagues share their condolences.

However, orchestrating the list of rap artists of the decade in the Nigerian music industry, we’ll also slightly talk about the evolution of Nigerian hip-hop from the last decade to the new decade.

The evolution started around 2016, when rappers started migrating from rapping to singing, making rap seems less important, it comes to a point that almost all our rappers were singing verses instead of rapping.

However, back in the day’s rap music was everything and more, a lot of artists gain prominence through rap music such as Sasha P., M.I Abaga, Vector, Mr Raw, Olamide, Phyno, and so on.

In this decade, a lot has changed, with the emergence of new school hip-hop acts and genre modifications such as a trap in the sub-genre.

A decade is a period of ten years, so the decade we are looking at ranges from (2010 – 2020).

M.I Abaga was around before the decade (2008), dominating part of the last decade alongside Mode nine, Rugged Man, Mr Raw, and the likes.

Olamide

Olamide is a Nigerian hip-hop recording artist, songwriter, and singer, one of the most versatile Nigerian artists.

Olamide launched officially in 2011, after releasing his debut studio album, and to date has the biggest music catalog in the Nigerian music industry, he also releases studio albums annually.

M.I Abaga

M.I coined from Mr Incredible is Nigerian hip-hop recording artistes, songwriter, and record producer, considered as one of the best lyricists with longevity.

M.I cracked the mainstream in 2008, after his viral hit single titled ‘Crowd mentality’ and since then till now he is still on top of the game, he is the most decorated Nigerian rapper of all time.

Vector

Olanrewaju Ogunmefun popularly known as Vector is a Nigerian rapper and songwriter, also considered a poet and lyricist towards the grading of his wordplay.

Vector gain dominance in 2010, who raps in both English and Yoruba basically dominated the hip-hop scene in 2016 with his hit track titled ‘Lafiaji’

Phyno  

Phyno is a Nigerian hip-hop recording artist, record producer, songwriter, and singer.

With the real name Chibuzor Nelson Azubuike, one of the forerunners of indigenous rap music Phyno started making a wave right from 2010 with the hit track ‘Multiply’ featuring M.I, Flavour, Mr Raw, and Timaya.

Phyno, therefore solidify his name in the mainstream after dropping his debut album.

Ice Prince

Panshak Henry Zamani popularly known as Ice Prince is a Nigerian rapper, singer, and songwriter, He gained prominence after his single “Oleku”, Brymo assisted track.

Also, Ice Prince hasn’t done so much in this decade like he used to do but still much around in the hip-hop conversation and the list wouldn’t be completed without adding his name.

Reminisce

Remilekun Abdulkalid Safaru known by his stage names Reminisce and ALAGA IBILE, is a Nigerian versatile musician, singer, rapper, and songwriter.

He has mastered the art of performing in both English and his native language, Yoruba.

Ycee

Oludemilade Martin Alejo known professionally as Ycee or Zaheer is a Nigerian rapper, singer, and songwriter, He gained popularity after his single “Condo”

Erigga

Erhiga Agarivbie popularly known as Erigga also refers to PaperBoi, 2 seconds, Eribaba, New Money is a Nigerian hip hop recording artist and songwriter.

Erigga has been on the conversation recently on the list of top best rappers.

Ill Bliss

Tobechukwu Melvin Ejiofor popularly known as Ill Bliss also called Oga Boss is a Nigerian hip-hop recording artist and songwriter, considered one of the best lyricists in the Nigerian music industry.

Illbliss won the Lyricist on the Roll category at the 14th edition of the Headies Award for his song ‘Country’ which was held on February 21, 2021.
