Manchester United have parted ways with head coach Ruben Amorim with immediate effect, bringing an abrupt end to his turbulent spell at Old Trafford after a fiery outburst directed at the club’s hierarchy following Sunday’s draw away at Leeds.

The decision was communicated to Amorim at the club’s Carrington training base on Monday morning, with senior players also briefed shortly afterwards.

In the interim, former United midfielder and current Under-18s coach Darren Fletcher has been handed the reins and will oversee the team for Wednesday’s Premier League clash against Burnley.

Amorim, 40, was reportedly entitled to £12 million in compensation if dismissed before November 1, although details of his final severance package remain unclear at this stage.

His exit closes the chapter on a 14-month reign marked by instability and disappointment. During that period, United suffered what was described as their worst season in over 50 years, failing to qualify for European competition for only the second time in 35 years. Despite the struggles, the club currently sits sixth on the Premier League table.

The Portuguese tactician arrived in Manchester in November 2024 from Sporting Lisbon with high expectations, but results and performances quickly turned sour.

His tenure became the subject of ridicule in some quarters, particularly after footage surfaced showing him using coaching magnets in the dugout during United’s shock Carabao Cup second-round defeat to Grimsby Town in August.

Confirming the decision, the club released an official statement saying: ‘Ruben Amorim has departed his role as head coach of Manchester United.

‘Ruben was appointed in November 2024 and led the team to a UEFA Europa League Final in Bilbao in May.

‘With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change. This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish.

‘The club would like to thank Ruben for his contribution to the club and wishes him well for the future. Darren Fletcher will take charge of the team against Burnley on Wednesday.’

Behind the scenes, Amorim’s relationship with the club’s leadership had reportedly deteriorated in recent weeks. His position became increasingly difficult after he publicly criticised the club’s handling of the January transfer window, singling out director of football Jason Wilcox and questioning the level of authority he was given in his role.

Tensions had been bubbling since the Christmas period, with Amorim dropping hints during media engagements. However, matters came to a head after his explosive comments at Elland Road, which shocked many observers.

Club statement: Ruben Amorim.

— Manchester United (@ManUtd) January 5, 2026

He said, ‘I noticed that you received selective information about everything. I came here to be the manager of Manchester United… not to be the coach of Manchester United. That is clear.

‘I know my name is not (Thomas) Tuchel, it’s not (Antonio) Conte, it’s not (Jose) Mourinho, but I am the manager of Manchester United and it’s going to be like this for 18 months or when the board decide to change. That was my point and I want to finish with that. I’m not going to quit. I will do my job until other guy is coming here to replace me.

‘I just want to say that I am going to be the manager of this team, not just the coach and I was really clear on that. And that is going to finish in 18 months and then everyone is going to move on. That was the deal, that is my job… not to be a coach. If people cannot handle the Gary Nevilles, the criticism, everything… we need to change the club. I just want to say that.

‘I came here to be the manager of Manchester United, not to be the coach. In every department, the scouting department, the sporting director needs to do his job, and I will do mine for 18 months and then we move on.’

Those remarks ultimately proved to be the final straw, as United’s hierarchy moved swiftly to draw a line under Amorim’s reign and shift focus to salvaging their league campaign under interim leadership.

Manchester United Dominate October Premier League Awards as Mbeumo and Amorim Win Big

The English FA has officially announced the winners of the Premier League’s Player and Manager of the Month awards for October 2025, and it’s a double celebration for Manchester United.

After 10 rounds of Premier League action, standout performances are beginning to shape the season’s narrative, and few clubs have made their presence felt quite like United. The Red Devils swept both major awards, with Bryan Mbeumo taking home the Player of the Month title and Ruben Amorim earning Manager of the Month, highlighting the club’s resurgence under the Portuguese tactician.

Bryan Mbeumo Shines Bright at Old Trafford

Mbeumo has quickly become one of Manchester United’s most impactful signings this season.

The 26-year-old forward enjoyed his most productive month yet in October, registering four goal contributions (three goals and one assist), the highest in the league during that period.

This marks Mbeumo’s first-ever Premier League Player of the Month award and United’s second of the year, following Bruno Fernandes’s win in March. The Cameroonian’s influence has been key to the team’s attacking revival, offering pace, precision, and creativity in the final third.

“Bryan is really direct, and we missed that last year,” manager Amorim admitted recently.

“You can sense when the ball is going to our defender, he is already running to position. This kind of small things that people don’t see are massive to turn our team into a more dangerous team.”

Mbeumo’s recognition continues a positive trend for United, who last saw Rasmus Højlund (now on loan at Napoli) claim the honor in 2024.

Ruben Amorim Ends United’s 23-Month Wait for Manager of the Month

It was a clean sweep for the red half of Manchester as Ruben Amorim clinched October’s Manager of the Month award, capping off an unbeaten run that saw United defeat Sunderland, Liverpool, and Brighton & Hove Albion.

The perfect month, three wins from three injected much-needed momentum into United’s campaign, lifting spirits among fans and players alike while momentarily propelling the club into the top four.

“The credit is not mine, the credit is for my players,” Amorim said after receiving the award. “They did really well, and our goal is to win the next [award], because it means we win football matches and that is our goal.”

Amorim’s win brings an end to a 23-month drought for United managers in this category, with Erik ten Hag the last to claim the honour back in November 2023.

Aston Villa’s Matty Cash was instrumental in his team’s October revival, producing match-winning moments at both ends of the pitch. His second goal of the season came in a statement win over Manchester City, following a decisive assist in the victory against Tottenham.

At Newcastle, Bruno Guimarães once again showed why he’s the heartbeat of Eddie Howe’s midfield. His long-range stunner against Nottingham Forest and a last-gasp winner versus Fulham ensured the Magpies’ steady climb up the table.

Erling Haaland, last month’s Player of the Month, continues to be a force of nature. Three goals in three games brought his total to 11 for the campaign — a figure that dwarfs his teammates’ combined tally. Few would bet against him doubling up on the award.

Over at Bournemouth, 19-year-old Junior Kroupi enjoyed a breakout month. The summer signing announced himself with a brace on his first Premier League start against Crystal Palace, then added another goal against Nottingham Forest to push the Cherries up to second place.

Manchester United’s Bryan Mbeumo has been a revelation under Ruben Amorim. With three goals and an assist, he led the Red Devils to a flawless October — their best run in months — and reignited belief among fans at Old Trafford.

For Nordi Mukiele, Sunderland’s surprise summer signing, October was about dominance and discipline. His defensive prowess was key to the Black Cats’ resilience, while his long throws caused chaos in opposing boxes — not to mention his crucial goal against Wolves.

Igor Thiago continued his hot streak for Brentford, adding two more goals to his tally and climbing to second in the Golden Boot race. His powerful display against West Ham and clinical penalty against Liverpool kept the Bees buzzing.

Finally, Jurriën Timber’s influence at Arsenal cannot be overstated. The Dutchman has reinvented himself as one of the league’s most consistent full-backs, anchoring a Gunners defence that didn’t concede a single goal all month — a record-breaking feat.

Manchester United’s new boss, Ruben Amorim, makes his first appearance on the shortlist after guiding his side to three straight wins over Sunderland, Liverpool, and Brighton. The Portuguese tactician seems to be settling in fast, blending energy, structure, and attacking flair.

Meanwhile, Mikel Arteta continues to mastermind Arsenal’s push for the title. The Gunners finished October unbeaten, boasting the tightest defence in the league and holding a four-point lead at the top of the table.

For Unai Emery, the turnaround at Aston Villa has been remarkable. After a shaky start to the season, his side produced a perfect month — taking down Burnley, Tottenham, and even champions Manchester City — to surge back into form.

And then there’s Andoni Iraola, the architect of Bournemouth’s fairytale rise. The Cherries ended October sitting second in the Premier League, with wins over Fulham and Forest, plus a gutsy draw against Crystal Palace.

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has issued an apology to fans after his side suffered an embarrassing League Cup exit at the hands of fourth-tier Grimsby Town on Wednesday night.

Amorim Apologises to United Fans After Shock League Cup Exit

United looked to have snatched a late reprieve when Harry Maguire’s 89th-minute header made it 2-2 after a dreadful opening half had left them trailing by two goals.

But the Red Devils’ fightback collapsed in a dramatic penalty shootout that ended 12-11 in Grimsby’s favour, with summer signing Bryan Mbeumo, who had earlier sparked United’s revival, striking the crossbar with his decisive effort.

The League Two side were full value for the victory, outplaying their Premier League opponents for large parts of the game and showing far greater determination.

Amorim hinted at deeper issues within the squad, telling reporters the players had “spoke really loud today what they want” – an apparent suggestion that some lacked the will to compete against lower-league opposition.

When pressed to explain United’s collapse, Amorim was blunt:
“Everything. The way we started the game, we were not even here. When everything is so important in our club, everything that happened, it’s a problem in our club, we should do so much better. I just have to say sorry to our fans.”

He added that the result reflected United’s wider problems rather than simply the shootout loss:
“Doesn’t matter (that we lost on penalties). In the penalties, the feeling is the same. I think football was really fair today. The best team won.”

The setback leaves the FA Cup as United’s only realistic route to silverware this season, with Amorim under increasing pressure after taking just one point from the opening two Premier League fixtures.

“I’m the manager. It should be my job to understand what happened. Again, I’m really sorry for our fans. Let’s focus on the next game. That is more than a result. That is the biggest problem in the team. I think it was really clear today,” he said.

A disjointed United also saw goalkeeper André Onana endure a nightmare evening, culpable for both Grimsby goals – beaten at his near post for the first and failing to deal with a cross that ex-United academy graduate Tyrell Warren converted for the second.

Amorim refused to single him out, however:
“It’s not about Andre. With all due respect. I already said that the best team won. But this is a fourth division team. It’s not the goalkeeper. It’s more than that.”

The Portuguese coach concluded by admitting his patience was wearing thin:
“It’s too much sometimes. You cannot change so much. You cannot change everything in one summer. You need to win games. You need to not show this kind of performance. I think this is a little bit the limit.”

Manchester United have no intention of sacking head coach Ruben Amorim this summer, even if he fails to deliver victory in the upcoming Europa League final, according to a new report.

Man United make Amorim sack decision before Europa League final

Amorim, who was appointed in November following the exit of Erik ten Hag, inherited a club in disarray. While few anticipated immediate miracles, United’s dramatic fall to 16th in the Premier League has raised serious concerns. Still, a Europa League final clash against fellow underachievers Tottenham Hotspur offers a glimmer of redemption — and a potential return to Champions League football.

Despite the poor domestic form, club executives remain committed to Amorim, according to The Guardian. They reportedly acknowledge the structural and personnel challenges he faces, particularly regarding his preferred 3-4-2-1 formation, which many players in the current squad struggle to adapt to.

Amorim himself has admitted feeling “embarrassed” by United’s struggles and hinted at a possible exit if meaningful change isn’t embraced. However, the board sees long-term potential in Amorim and believes the solution lies in recruitment rather than a change in leadership.

Key Transfer Plans Underway

United are preparing to back Amorim with signings tailored to his system, regardless of whether they qualify for next season’s Champions League. Plans include:

Triggering Matheus Cunha’s £62.5 million release clause from Wolves.

Pursuing Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap, who has a £30 million clause.

Reinforcements at goalkeeper and wing-back positions.

Additional attacking signings if funds are raised from player sales.

Potential outgoings include Marcus Rashford, Antony, and Jadon Sancho, whose sales could unlock a big-money move for young Southampton star Tyler Dibling, valued at a speculative £100 million.

With full backing from the board and a transfer strategy aligned with his tactical vision, Amorim looks set to remain at the helm as United begin what may be a significant summer rebuild.

Manchester United fans have been left wondering if André Onana will reclaim his spot in goal for the crucial second leg of their Europa League tie against Lyon.

The Cameroonian shot-stopper was noticeably absent from the starting lineup in United’s recent Premier League clash against Newcastle United — marking the first time he was benched in the league under new manager Ruben Amorim.

The decision sparked curiosity, especially since Amorim didn’t offer a direct explanation for dropping his first-choice keeper.

However, following the match, Amorim shed some light on the situation, hinting that Onana’s performance in the first-leg defeat to Lyon in the Europa League may have influenced the call.

“Sometimes, you have to push the player to play again; sometimes, you have to let him disconnect a little bit,” Amorim explained. “Tomorrow, André will be in training to prepare for the next one, so I felt that it was a good time for André to disconnect.”

When asked whether Onana would return for the high-stakes rematch against Lyon, Amorim remained noncommittal:
“Onana vs Lyon? You guys have to wait, I’m going to choose the best starting XI for the next one.”

With a spot in the Europa League semi-finals on the line, Manchester United fans are hopeful Amorim picks a lineup capable of overturning the deficit and keeping their European dreams alive — whether that includes Onana between the sticks or not.

Ruben Amorim has fired back at Wayne Rooney after the Manchester United legend labeled the club’s title ambitions as “naive.”

Rooney, working as a pundit, remarked United’s FA Cup exit to Fulham in a fifth-round penalty shootout. Meanwhile, Amorim’s side remains in the Europa League but sits 14th in the Premier League, far from the heights they aspire to reach.

Despite their struggles, Amorim insists that United’s long-term vision is to reclaim domestic dominance, just as they did under Sir Alex Ferguson’s reign.

Rooney, a five-time Premier League champion with United, was skeptical of that outlook, stating: “I think it’s a little naive to say they’re looking to win the Premier League because from where they are now, they’re a long way off that.”

Unfazed by the criticism, Amorim responded sharply, emphasizing the club’s broader ambitions.

“That is the goal,” Amorim said. “Being naive is thinking we’ll do it this season or be the top contender next season. I know how easy it is to be a pundit—I was one after I retired.

“Our goal is to win the Premier League. Maybe it won’t happen with me, but as a club, with the board, we aim to return to the top like we did with the great legends of this club. We are in a difficult moment, but I am not naive—that’s why I’m here, at 40 years old, coaching Manchester United.”

While Amorim leads United’s latest rebuild, Rooney is battling to restore his managerial reputation. His last two jobs at Birmingham and Plymouth failed, lasting just 83 days and 25 games, respectively.

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has issued a stark warning to Marcus Rashford, insisting that the forward “has to change” if he wants to revive his Old Trafford career.

Speaking ahead of United’s Europa League clash against FCSB, Amorim was blunt about Rashford’s struggles, stating, “Imagine a talent like Rashford—our team should be so much better with Rashford. But Rashford, he has to change.

If he changes, we are more than welcome to put a talent like Rashford [in the team], and we need it! But in this moment, I think it’s really clear that we have to set some standards.

So we are waiting for Marcus, if he wants it really, really bad. It’s not personal. I have nothing against Marcus, I just have to have the same rules for everybody, for me it’s so simple.”

The relationship between Rashford and Amorim has reportedly deteriorated, with the pair no longer on speaking terms. Tensions escalated after Rashford told journalist Henry Winter he was open to a “new challenge,” while Amorim has continuously questioned the 27-year-old’s attitude and work ethic.

With the January transfer window nearing its close, Rashford appears to be running out of options. Despite interest from Juventus, Milan, Napoli, and Barcelona, his high wage demands have discouraged several clubs from making a move.

Reports suggest that his only realistic choices now are a loan switch to Juventus or a long-term deal with Barcelona.

Manchester United’s head coach, Ruben Amorim, has taken a hardline stance against forward Marcus Rashford, leaving the England star out of the team for several weeks.

The ongoing conflict between the pair has raised serious questions about Rashford’s future at Old Trafford.

Once hailed as a key player for Manchester United, Rashford has struggled to replicate the form that earned him a lucrative contract extension two seasons ago. Since signing the new deal, the forward has failed to significantly impact the pitch, prompting criticism and concerns about his commitment.

Amorim, known for his no-nonsense approach, has reportedly been unimpressed with Rashford’s performance in training. The Portuguese manager cited the player’s lack of effort and attention to detail as the main reasons for his exclusion from the squad across all competitions.

In a candid statement, Amorim explained: “Rashford out? The reason is the training, the way I see what footballers should do in training, in life. It’s every day, every detail. Even if we missed something upfront against Fulham, I prefer like this.

If things don’t change, I will not change. I will put the goalkeeper coach Vital before I put a player who does not give the maximum every day. I will not change in that department.”

With Rashford sidelined, speculation about his future is heating up. The forward has been linked with a move away from Manchester United, with Barcelona emerging as a potential destination. As the January transfer window approaches, fans and analysts alike are eager to see a resolution before the deadline.

The clock is ticking, and for Rashford, the next few weeks could determine whether he stays to fight for his place at Old Trafford or seeks a fresh start elsewhere. One thing is clear: Ruben Amorim’s standards leave no room for compromise.

Manchester United have secured the long-term future of star forward Amad Diallo, with the Ivorian signing a new contract that keeps him at Old Trafford until 30 June 2030.

Amad, 22, has been in scintillating form under manager Ruben Amorim, excelling both in a wing-back role and as part of the front three. He netted his sixth goal of the season in Sunday’s 2-2 draw against Liverpool at Anfield.

Previously set to expire at the end of the season, Amad’s deal had a one-year extension option, but the club moved quickly to finalize a longer-term agreement amid reported interest from two other clubs.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Amad expressed his excitement:
“I am really proud to have signed this new contract. I’ve already had some incredible moments with this club, but there’s so much more to come. My ambitions are huge, and I want to create history at Manchester United.

“I’ve learned so much since arriving four years ago and am grateful to the coaches, staff, and fans for their unwavering support. It’s been a challenging season for everyone, but I believe we’re on the right path. I’m ready to give my all to make our supporters proud again.”

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has expressed his desire to see Marcus Rashford remain at Old Trafford despite the player’s recent comments hinting at a possible exit.

The England international, who has been in mixed form recently, was notably absent from United’s squad during their derby triumph over Manchester City on Sunday.

However, Amorim clarified that the decision to leave out Rashford and fellow forward Alejandro Garnacho was not punitive.

Explaining his approach, the Portuguese tactician highlighted the importance of professionalism beyond the pitch. “It’s about the way you dress, the way you eat, the way you engage with teammates and push teammates,” he stated.

Despite Rashford showing support for his team on social media, the academy graduate made headlines on Tuesday evening when he candidly admitted in an interview that he feels “ready for a new challenge,” sparking rumors of a potential January departure.

When asked about Rashford’s future during a press conference ahead of United’s Carabao Cup quarter-final clash with Tottenham Hotspur, Amorim made his position clear: “Of course, because this kind of club needs big talents, and he is a big talent. He just needs to perform at the highest level, and that is my focus. I just want to help Marcus.”

Amorim emphasized the importance of Rashford to the team, adding, “We are better with Marcus Rashford, and it’s that simple. We will try different things to push Rashford to the best levels that he has shown me in the past.”

Despite the ongoing speculation, Rashford has been training with the team, and Amorim confirmed that the forward is available for the midweek trip to Tottenham. “He is our player, and he is ready for the next game,” Amorim assured.

Responding to Rashford’s remarks about seeking a “new challenge,” Amorim took a pragmatic stance, saying, “He is right. We have here a new challenge, the biggest in football. We are in a difficult situation, and I hope all my players are ready.”

Summing up his approach to the situation, Amorim concluded: “What I want is to take the best of Marcus Rashford. I don’t talk about the future; I just talk about the present.”

As speculation continues to swirl, United fans will be closely watching to see how the situation develops and whether Rashford’s performance can match the high expectations set by his manager.
