As reported by The Times, the Premier League will scrutinize potential payments made by Chelsea to offshore entities while Roman Abramovich was at the helm of the club.

The investigation centers on a substantial sum, amounting to “millions of pounds,” and if any misconduct is uncovered, Chelsea could face severe penalties, including substantial fines and even point deductions.

This latest inquiry into Chelsea’s financial dealings arises at a time when the club has been making significant investments in new players. Since Abramovich’s departure from the club in May 2022, Chelsea has spent well over £600 million on player acquisitions, but they may still be held accountable for transactions conducted during his ownership.

UEFA has fined Chelsea €10 million (£8.6 million, $11 million) for prior violations of the Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules.

The Premier League team provided incomplete financial data on transactions that happened between 2012 and 2019 when it was still under Roman Abramovich’s ownership.

According to UEFA, Chelsea’s new owners, a group led by Clearlake Capital and Todd Boehly, who took over the club in May 2022, made the organization aware of previous instances of inaccurate financial reporting.

Chelsea won’t face any more athletic penalties as a result of the €10 million fine. The West London team, which placed 12th in the Premier League in 2022–23, will not be participating in any European competitions for the upcoming season.

The Club Financial Control Body (CFCB), an independent panel inside UEFA that has investigative and adjudicatory arms and is responsible for enforcing FFP and making sure the rules are implemented, oversaw the case.

A UEFA statement read: “With respect to Chelsea FC the CFCB First Chamber concluded that the club breached the UEFA Club Licensing and Financial Fair Play regulations as a result of submitting incomplete financial information.

“Following the club’s sale in May 2022, the new ownership identified, and proactively reported to UEFA, instances of potentially incomplete financial reporting under the club’s previous ownership. The reported matters related to historical transactions which took place between 2012 and 2019.

“Following its assessment, including the applicable statute of limitations, the CFCB First Chamber entered into a settlement agreement with the club which has agreed to pay a financial contribution of €10million to fully resolve the reported matters.”

Ahead of Real Madrid’s visit to Stamford Bridge, Carlo Ancelotti praised Todd Boehly for his “good move” in having a changing room meeting with Chelsea players.

On Sunday, after Chelsea’s 2-1 home loss to Brighton, Boehly stormed into the Blues’ locker room to confront the players.

Along with fellow co-owners Behdad Eghbali and Hasjorg Wyss, the owner is rumoured to have labelled the current circumstance “embarrassing” and singled out a senior player for criticism.

Boehly’s criticism comes at a vital time as Chelsea looks to bounce back from a 2-0 loss to Real Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal match on Tuesday at Stamford Bridge.

Although it is not usual for an owner to speak directly to the players, Ancelotti feels Boehly’s pep talk could act as an inspiration to the players before a season-defining tie.

 “From the owners it could be an important motivation for the players. The Chelsea moment is not a good moment, I think to have the support of the club could inspire the players to play better,” he told reporters.

“I think it is a good move to do this and if the clubs want to come and talk to the players I have no problem, absolutely. If he [Madrid’s president] wants to talk to me every game I am pleased because I think the owner has the right to know what are the decisions of the managers, so it is the right of the club to know what the manager does.”

Since taking over from Roman Abramovich the previous summer, the new owners of Chelsea have completely changed the squad.

To bolster the team, they have aggressively invested in player recruitment and have spent more than £600 million overall over the two transfer windows.

The Blues are now in 11th place in the Premier League, having fallen short of expectations. They are also in danger of losing in the second round of the Champions League if they suffer another defeat in the decisive match against Real Madrid.

Tuesday at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea will host Real Madrid in the second leg of their Champions League quarterfinal matchup.

Thomas Tuchel has acknowledged that because he no longer is familiar with life at Stamford Bridge, he would be unable to provide Julian Nagelsmann with any advice about going to Chelsea.

Under the former owner Roman Abramovich, Tuchel rose to prominence at Chelsea, but the new Todd Boehly–Clearlake Capital ownership decided to replace him with Graham Potter and gave him his marching orders early in the current season.

Six months later and Potter has been given the boot as well – just over a week after Tuchel himself returned to work with Bayern Munich.

Chelsea’s interest in Julian Nagelsmann, who Tuchel succeeded at Munich has emerged as the early favourite to fill the vacant Stamford Bridge position, has set off something of a managerial merry-go-round.

Asked whether he would advise Nagelsmann to move to Chelsea, Tuchel said: “I saw the news [of Potter’s exit] late last night. It’s awful timing as it coincided with my appointment here.

“It took me a while to distance myself from Chelsea. I really enjoyed working there and formed friendships for life. But the club has changed a lot, which has made it easier to distance myself, so it didn’t really trigger big emotions in me.

“I could not give advice [to Nagelsmann] because the club has changed.”

Given that Bayern Munich is close to finalizing a deal that would see the Chelsea coach reconnect with Tuchel, Anthony Barry may soon follow Potter out the exit door.

Chelsea is now looking for a new manager and is said to be interested in Luis Enrique, Mauricio Pochettino, and Ruben Amorim in addition to Nagelsmann.

Roman Abramovich’s influence, according to Sir Martin Broughton, who was one of the final bidders in the battle to buy Chelsea last summer, is still felt at Stamford Bridge.

The Boehly-Clearlake partnership beat out other bidders to purchase the Blues for £2.5 billion through the investment firm Raine Group. The consortium also pledged to invest an additional $1.75 billion into the club over the following ten years.

As a result of the UK government’s sanctions following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Abramovich was prevented from making the choice to sell Chelsea, and he did not stand to gain financially from the transaction.

Broughton, who headed a group that included Crystal Palace investors Josh Harris and Dave Blitzer, outlined in new detail how the new owners must adhere to an Abramovich plan in his speech at the Financial Times Business of Football Summit.

He said: “The strange thing was this was a reluctant seller who was not receiving any of the money, so normally price would be the ultimate dictator. It was not the ultimate dictator here.

“We were very much led by Raine, Bruce [Buck] and Marina [Granovskaia] to bid an amount. Agree to put an amount over the next 10 years in this piece, be it the academy, you’ve got to agree to invest this much into the women’s team.

“It was very focused. In fact, it was Roman trying to say to the fans, ‘I don’t want to leave’, but if I have to, whoever takes over will do what I would have done.”

The auction-style process saw several buyers competing against each other, including Broughton with Harris and Blitzer.

He believes he was close to becoming the owner, along with Boston Celtics and Atalanta owner Stephen Pagliuca.

Chelsea player Reece James has opened up about his “hate” for the January transfer window after Chelsea spent over £300million on eight new signings last month.

The 23-year-old right-back, who came through the Blues’ academy, has missed significant periods of the 2022–23 season due to a knee injury.

Since the summer, his team Chelsea has spent more than £600 million on players, thanks to Todd Boehly, the club’s new owner who took over from Roman Abramovich.

The west London club spent around £300 million on transfers alone in January, breaking the previous British record to recruit Enzo Fernandez from Benfica for £106.8 million and bringing in Ukrainian international Mykhailo Mudryk for £88.5 million.

In all, eight players were signed by Chelsea in January, including Joao Felix on loan from Atletico Madrid for £10 million over a six-month period. Seven of these players were given permanent contracts.

One player they decided to sign was 19-year-old Malo Gusto from Lyon, who has been loaned back to the French club and is expected to provide competition for James at right-back next season

James, speaking to Sky Sports on Monday, has revealed that he is not a fan of transfer windows.

‘The transfer window is one of my biggest hates,’ he said. ‘The January period is always so busy with many games and then you have transfer noise.

‘It’s all a bit too much in one month, I don’t really listen to much… it’s a crazy month.’

Chelsea has had a terrible season; Graham Potter’s team is now ninth in the Premier League standings and ten points behind the top four.

However, James is certain that once their new players have adjusted, they can become “one of the top teams in the world.”

According to reports, Chelsea are set to hand a contract extension to 38-year-old centre-back Thiago Silva.

With 105 appearances for the Blues since his 2020 transfer from French club Paris Saint-Germain, Silva, who turns 39 in September, is thought to be eager to continue playing until he reaches 40.

The 113-cap Brazil international has played in 18 of Chelsea’s 20 Premier League games this season, which has the west London club ranked 10th in the standings.

Graham Potter, the new Chelsea manager who took over for Thomas Tuchel in September, claimed to be impressed with Silva and wants to keep him at Stamford Bridge past the summer when his current contract is set to expire.

The Blues confirmed the arrival of Noni Madueke in a £35m deal from PSV on Friday, with the winger becoming the club’s sixth signing in January.

The Blues have already brought in Mykhailo Mudryk for £88.5m, and Benoit Badiashile for £35m while David Datro Fofana and Andrey Santos were signed for undisclosed fees and Joao Felix arrived on loan from Atletico Madrid.

Chelsea returns to play on February 3 when they host Fulham in a west London derby. Chelsea is now 10 points outside the top four in the Premier League.

Chelsea fans already appear to be losing faith in Potter’s regime and, with £250 million ($305m) having been invested in the last summer transfer window, the man calling the shots in west London accepts that he is filling the most demanding of roles.

Potter has said: “This is what it is. We have to deal with the new and we have to build things up again because things have changed, things have gone and left. That’s part of the challenge to come and I understood that things would be difficult from a leadership perspective.

Todd Boehly has stepped down as temporary sporting director at Chelsea following a difficult first half-year at the club, with his new recruitment team taking shape, according to reports.

The American tycoon, 49, stepped into the role on an interim basis following the departure of ex-Blues transfer chief Marina Granovskaia.

Highly-regarded thanks to her work under Roman Abramovich for more than a decade, she left west London shortly after the Russian oligarch.

After managing the team for 19 years, Abramovich was compelled to sell it due to the invasion of Ukraine by his country, which caused his connections to Russian President Vladimir Putin to come to light. Boehly, who led a consortium’s £4.25 billion acquisition, assumed Granovskaia’s role but had a difficult start to English football.

Chelsea has spent more than £350 million on transfers, but the returns have been decreasing. This season, they also made the brutal decision to fire popular manager Thomas Tuchel after just seven games.

According to the Daily Telegraph, the 49-year-old has renounced his position as interim sporting director in a novel development. Boehly and his partner co-owner Behdad Eghbali have delegated control to the Blues’ director of global talent and transfers, Paul Winstanley, and the club’s new technical director, Christopher Vivell, even though Boehly will still have the final say on transfers.

The report adds that Boehly is fully behind manager Graham Potter following a difficult first four months in charge.

Chelsea’s recruitment drive for the January transfer window is already in motion, with Badiashile being joined by Ivorian wonderkid David Datro Fofana and RB Leipzig star Christopher Nkunku expected to arrive at Stamford Bridge this summer.

The Blues have also reached an agreement to sign Joao Felix on loan from Atletico Madrid, paying €11million (£9.68m) for his services over six months.

However, it doesn’t appear that Chelsea will be getting their hands on top target Enzo Fernandez this month, with Benfica holding firm. Manager Roger Schmidt declared on Monday that talks over the 21-year-old midfielder’s potential departure are “closed”.

After another poor performance, Graham Potter has dismissed any claims that his Chelsea players are not giving it their all.

Manchester City crushed Chelsea 4-0 in the FA Cup, and the team’s mindset was called into doubt by the lacklustre effort.

Potter, though, disputes that he already lost the dressing room and says that Man City’s performance made things appear much worse than it truly is.

“This opponent is the worst opponent you can play when things aren’t going well because they can make it look like you aren’t trying,” Potter said after the Man City thumping.

“I’m working with the players and I don’t feel the sense of any players with a poor attitude.

“Everyone wants to try to do better but we’re going through a bad moment and in these moments, you need somebody to blame.

Potter, though, thinks that Chelsea must acknowledge the grievances of the Chelsea fans while making steadfast efforts to ameliorate them.

“We can’t do anything but do our jobs better and work harder,” he said. “We understand the supporters’ frustration but our job is to do our job. There are always other opinions, criticism and negativity, but that’s part of the challenge.

“It’s always challenging in the Premier League and it’s always challenging here. I understand their frustration and I understand when you look at results and the team performance today that it is far away from Manchester City. That’s clear.

“We have to focus on the next day, the next match. We play on Thursday and it’s an important game for us. We need to stay together as group, support each other, and I’m sure we will get the support of the supporters when we see good performances and results.”
