Kai Havertz equalled Robin van Persie’s record by scoring in his seventh consecutive game at the Emirates, as Arsenal secured a 3-1 comeback victory over Southampton.

The win helped the Gunners maintain their unbeaten start to the Premier League season and moved them within one point of league leaders Liverpool, who edged out Crystal Palace 1-0 earlier in the day.

Despite being heavy favourites, Arsenal found themselves frustrated in the first half, unable to break down Southampton’s defence and only registering their first shot on target in stoppage time. The Saints shocked the home crowd when Cameron Archer scored in the 55th minute after a swift counterattack, following Raheem Sterling’s loss of possession.

The goal seemed to ignite Arsenal’s response, as Havertz equalized just three minutes later from a Bukayo Saka assist. Ten minutes after levelling the game, Arsenal took the lead when Saka delivered another assist, this time lofting a precise pass over the defence for substitute Gabriel Martinelli, who finished coolly.

Southampton nearly equalized with a corner that hit the crossbar, but Arsenal sealed the win when Saka scored in the 88th minute, capping off a brilliant individual performance with a third goal.

This victory kept Arsenal firmly in the title race, showcasing their resilience in tough situations while continuing Havertz’s goal-scoring streak at the Emirates.

Manchester City’s goal machine, Erling Haaland, has won back-to-back Premier League Golden Boot awards, joining an elite club in the process.

After clinching the prestigious prize in his first season in England by netting a record 36 goals in 35 appearances, the Norwegian superstar has now won the award for a second consecutive season, scoring 27 goals in 31 matches. This feat contributed significantly to City securing their fourth successive Premier League title with a 3-1 victory over West Ham on the final day.

At just 23 years old, Haaland becomes only the seventh player in Premier League history to win the Golden Boot in consecutive seasons. He joins an exclusive group that includes legendary names such as Thierry Henry, Mohamed Salah, Michael Owen, Alan Shearer, Robin van Persie, and Harry Kane.

Former Arsenal great Thierry Henry holds the record for the most Golden Boot awards, having won them in the 2001–02, 2003–04, 2004–05, and 2005–06 seasons. Haaland, with his prolific scoring record, will undoubtedly have his sights set on challenging Henry’s record in the coming years.

The Norwegian international will now enjoy a well-deserved break before returning to action for pre-season games, as Manchester City is set to travel to the US in July.

Robert Lewandowski has disclosed that early in his career when he received a call from renowned Old Trafford manager Sir Alex Ferguson, he was eager to join Manchester United. But, Borussia Dortmund and Jürgen Klopp prevented a possible transfer.

Lewandowski began his career through the Polish lower levels at the age of 16, eventually joining Lech Poznan in the top division in 2008. He scored 41 goals in 82 games across all competitions during that period.

As a result, the teenage striker was able to join Borussia Dortmund in Germany and was a regular member of Klopp’s team that won the 2010–11 Bundesliga title.

Lewandowski wasn’t the prolific goal scorer he is now at that point in his career, but it looks like Fergie and United instantly saw his huge potential.

It was during Dortmund’s pre-season and he was 22 at the time, which places it around July 2011, when United were in need of a fresh injection up front and would sign Robin van Persie to spearhead their next Premier League title charge the following year.

“I remember the moment exactly,” Lewandowski has now recalled in an interview with Sport Bild.

“We had a friendly with Dortmund in preparation, I think against Bochum. I was subbed at half-time. I looked at my mobile phone in the dressing room. There was a text message with the sender +44. Ferguson had tried to call me and then sent me a message. He wanted to talk to me.

“I was still in the dressing room, I took a shower and called him back, in a quiet corner. My English wasn’t as good as it is today. He has a strong Scottish accent. I was so focused on understanding what he meant! Alex Ferguson tried to be considerate, spoke slowly.

“I was 22-years-old, it was a special moment. I spoke to Aki Watzke and Jurgen Klopp in the camp. I wanted to go to Man United! But they said: ‘No chance, Robert. We need you. You have to stay’.”

Staying put was precisely what he did, and the next season, as Dortmund defended their crown, Lewandowski scored 30 goals in all competitions for the first time in his career. He led the team to the Champions League final the next year before signing for free with Bayern Munich in 2014. In 375 games for Bavaria, he scored an astounding 344 goals, showing that he appeared to become better with age.

The senior player is currently playing for Barcelona and, although playing in a different nation for the first time in 12 years, has shown no signs of slowing down. His 27 goals in 34 games speak for themselves.

Yet when Fergie phoned all those years ago, it wasn’t the first time a team in England had tried to get Lewandowski. Blackburn had the opportunity to sign him directly from Poznan before Dortmund, but their attempt was thwarted in part by a volcanic ash cloud that grounded planes throughout Europe.

A price tag of up to €4m was also an issue for the former Premier League champions, who were relegated in 2012 and haven’t returned to the top flight since. A couple of months after Blackburn had been denied their meeting with Lewandowski, Dortmund signed him for €4.5m.

“I think about it every time I see him play,” former Rovers manager Sam Allardyce remarked three years later. “I think they wanted €3m or €4m, but we were particularly strapped financially at the time at Blackburn. I watched him play, but I didn’t get the chance to meet him. I think his agent said he couldn’t come over because of the ash cloud.

“There were a lot of people looking at him at that time as well, but we had the edge over everyone else because of the attraction of the Premier League. He could have used us as a stepping stone but it didn’t happen.”

Former Netherlands international, Robin van Persie, has hailed Arsenal and Manchester United target, after his recent performance for the club.

Van Persie praised Cody Gakpo and stated that the PSV Eindhoven player is a highly dangerous player who is strong and quick.

Gakpo has been linked with a move to Man United and Arsenal in the past.

Gakpo was impressive for PSV as they defeated Arsenal 2-0 in the Europa League group stage tie on Thursday.

“He is a good player and always finds a way in most games to have an influence, in terms of getting an assist or scoring a goal,” Van Persie BT Sport (via HITC).

“(Gakpo) is always dangerous (but) not really an out-and-out striker. He can play as a No.10, on the (left) wing, as a false striker or on the right wing.

He added: “He has a good physique. He’s strong, fast and can dribble. An all-round player.”

Arsenal’s forward, Gabriel Martinelli, has set a new record as he writes his name in the history books of the Premier League.

At the Emirates Stadium, the Brazilian scored the game’s first goal against Liverpool after 58 seconds. In the history of the match between the Gunners and the Reds, the goal was scored the second-fastest.

The fastest goal in the fixture between both sides was scored by Liverpool’s Martin Skrtel after 52 seconds in the 5-1 demolition of the Gunners at Anfield in February 2014.
