Wolverhampton Wanderers (Wolves) have confirmed the appointment of Rob Edwards as their new manager on a three-and-a-half-year contract, following the dismissal of Vitor Pereira earlier this month.

Edwards joins from Middlesbrough, where he had been head coach since June, guiding them to second place in the Championship, five points behind leaders Coventry City.

His move to Molineux was finalised after Wolves agreed a compensation package with Middlesbrough, who initially rejected their approach.

A familiar face at the club, Edwards made 111 appearances for Wolves as a player between 2004 and 2008. His appointment marks a homecoming for the 42-year-old, who also gained Premier League experience managing Luton Town.

Wolves currently sit bottom of the Premier League, with just two points from 11 matches, following a disappointing start to the season under Pereira.

Edwards will be joined by his longtime assistant Harry Watling, who also leaves Middlesbrough to take up the role of assistant head coach.

In a statement, Middlesbrough acknowledged Edwards’ departure:

“Rob had signed a three-year contract with ourselves during the summer, but after he made it clear he was keen to join Wolves, we reluctantly agreed a figure of compensation for both himself and one of his first team coaches, Harry Watling.”

They added:

“On Saturday, the Riverside came together as one — players, staff, and supporters — and you could feel the sense of unity which is at the core of our club. To everyone involved, we would like to say thank you.”

Wolves’ executive chairman Jeff Shi praised the new boss, highlighting his familiarity with the club and tactical maturity:

“Rob showed tactical awareness when he was a youth coach here. After he took first-team jobs, he started to grow his own identity, character, and leadership. He’s a very good person who knows the club, the city, and the fans — and he is very talented.”

Edwards’ first task will be to lift Wolves out of the relegation zone and restore confidence to a struggling side that has won none of its opening 11 league games this season.

The nominees for January 2024’s Barclays Manager of the Month award have been revealed, and you have the opportunity to help decide the winner.

Here’s a closer look at each nominee:

1. Mikel Arteta (Arsenal)
– Played 2, Won 2, Drawn 0, Lost 0, Goal Difference +6
– Arteta orchestrated Arsenal’s attacking prowess, securing two victories against Crystal Palace (5-0) and Nottingham Forest (2-1). These wins maintained the pressure on league leaders Liverpool, with a total of five different scorers across both matches.

2. Rob Edwards (Luton)
– Played 2, Won 1, Drawn 1, Lost 0, Goal Difference +4
– Edwards guided Luton Town to an unbeaten month, collecting four points out of a possible six. The highlight was a resounding 4-0 triumph over Brighton & Hove Albion, marking Luton’s largest Premier League victory and lifting them out of the relegation zone.

3. Pep Guardiola (Manchester City)
– Played 2, Won 2, Drawn 0, Lost 0, Goal Difference +3
– Guardiola steered Manchester City to a flawless record in January, with notable victories including a thrilling 3-2 comeback against Newcastle United and a win over Burnley, managed by his former captain, Vincent Kompany.

4. Jurgen Klopp (Liverpool)
– Played 3, Won 3, Drawn 0, Lost 0, Goal Difference +9
– Klopp’s Liverpool emerged as the standout team of January, securing victory in all three matches. Despite Klopp’s impending departure announcement, Liverpool responded emphatically, defeating Newcastle, AFC Bournemouth, and Chelsea, each by a margin of four goals, and ending the month atop the table.

These exceptional managerial performances present a tough decision in determining the recipient of the Barclays Manager of the Month award for January.

Watford professional football club have sacked Rob Edwards, who took charge of just 11 games and leaves Vicarage Road with the club 10th in the Sky Bet Championship.

Rob Edwards managed Watford for just 11 games, leaving the club in 10th place in the Sky Bet Championship. Former West Ham, West Brom, and Croatia manager Slaven Bilic was swiftly named as Edwards‘ replacement at Watford.

Bilic has signed an 18-month contract at Vicarage Road, replacing Edwards who took charge of just 11 matches during a three-month stint at Watford.

In a statement, Watford owner Gino Pozzo said:

“As with all decisions taken by the Board, I believe this change to be in the best interests of the club. We felt Rob had enough time to show us the identity of his team, however, performances haven’t reflected our hopes and ambitions. Now we must move forward, and, in Slaven Bilic, we have secured the services of an experienced coach who has recent experience of promotion to the Premier League.”

Edwards was hired after the club was demoted from the Premier League last summer after making an impression while coaching Forest Green to the League Two championship.

The 39-year-old got off to a good start as Watford picked up seven points from their first three games. However, after managing just one more victory after that, he was fired, becoming the 17th permanent manager to lose his job since the Pozzo family took over Watford in 2012.

Former Croatia international player and head coach Bilic takes over with Watford 10th in the Championship table ahead of a trip to Stoke on Sunday.

The 54-year-old managed West Ham in the Premier League and his most recent work in English football saw him guide West Brom to promotion from the Championship in 2019/20.

A Watford statement concluded: “Bilic’s other staff will be confirmed in due course and Watford FC will make no further comment at this time.”
