Rio Ferdinand, a legendary member of Manchester United, led the team to its last Champions League title victory over Chelsea in 2008.

The defender finally felt like he belonged among Old Trafford greats like Sir Bobby Charlton in that moment, but it also brought with it a big sadness over how the team didn’t properly celebrate.

It was a suitable final because United and Chelsea were the two best teams in Europe at the time.

Frank Lampard equalized Cristiano Ronaldo’s first-half header just before halftime to make the final score 1-1 after 90 minutes. In the extra session, Didier Drogba was also dismissed for slapping Nemanja Vidic, and Lampard also struck the crossbar.

Ronaldo actually missed in the shootout despite having 43 goals in all competitions. That gave Chelsea a chance to win it, but John Terry’s iconic mistake caused him to hit the post instead.

Edwin van der Sar’s stop of Nicolas Anelka after Anderson, Salomon Kalou, and Ryan Giggs had all scored gave United a 6-5 victory and their third European Cup.

Ferdinand was due to be next to take a penalty had Anelka scored. But he has admitted in the latest episode of James Richardson’s Kings of Europe podcast that his legs were ‘gone’ with nerves.

“We hadn’t had a set list of who was taking them and what numbers. We got to penalties and the manager asked who wants to take one. I vividly remember Patrice Evra saying, ‘I don’t want one’,” Ferdinand recalled of the rainy night in Moscow.

“I was after Giggsy. When Giggsy took his penalty and I thought Anelka would go up and score his, the closer it got to me, the more I lost my legs. I really don’t know how I would have got from the halfway line and down to the penalty spot without crawling. How am I going to kick the ball like this?

“I was gone, seriously. It was just crazy what it does to you because of the enormity of the occasion and I allowed it to get to me too much – God knows what would have happened to me if I’d had to go up and take a penalty.”

The Champions League final marked Ferdinand’s 51st start for United, making him the only player to start more than 50 games in all competitions throughout the season. He frequently donned the armband because club captain Gary Neville was out for the most of the season due to injury.

But even several years into his United career, having transferred from Leeds for a then British record £30m fee in 2002, it took a European title for Ferdinand to feel like he deserved to be in the company of club legends who had been of United’s storied past.

“Sir Bobby Charlton said a few nice words to me about lifting it, the importance of it to the club, but also as captain and what that means,” Ferdinand explained.

“People have to understand, when you’re at a club like Manchester United steeped in history and success, you walk around the corridors desperate to etch your name into that history as well. With legends like that, I felt inferior and wasn’t that level. I can’t have that conversation or sit at that table until I’ve won the Champions League and multiple Premier Leagues.

“I was always searching for those titles and that was one of the moments where I could shake Sir Bobby’s hand, look him in the eye and feel comfortable.”

Yet with a Champions League title in the bag, a first since 1999 and still their most recent triumph in the competition, despite returning to further finals in 2009 and 2011, Ferdinand strongly believes the club missed a golden opportunity because of a ‘complacent’ attitude to success.

In 1999, when victory over Bayern Munich at Camp Nou had sealed the third leg of an unprecedented treble, there had been an open-top bus parade through the centre of Manchester that finished with a celebration at the city’s arena. More than half a million people had packed the streets, hanging off lamp posts, bus stops and out of windows to be part of it. But in 2008, the Premier League and Champions League double winners had no such celebration.

“I couldn’t believe it myself,” a perplexed Ferdinand said.

“United were too accustomed to winning by that point – the 90s and 2000s were probably the most decorated years and we were in the midst of that. I just think the club became very complacent and used to winning, and thought, ‘We don’t need to, we’ll be here again soon’.

“I remember getting back from Moscow and there were a couple of hundred fans [at the airport]. I was thinking, ‘Where the hell is everyone?!’ We’d won the league and the [European] cup. I remember a lot of the foreign boys were like, ‘If we were in our country, we would not be able to get out of this airport’. The manager said, ‘Right, guys, well done. Thank you for everything. I’ll see you on the first day of pre-season, go and have a good summer’.

“Are we not doing an open top bus tour to the Manchester arena or something? I thought it was a wind-up, we’d won the double – Champions League and [Premier] league – and we’re not even going to celebrate it with our fans.”

Rio Ferdinand, a former defender for Manchester United, believes Wout Weghorst is not the ideal No. 10 for the Red Devils.

Weghorst has drawn criticism for failing to make an impression since moving to Old Trafford on loan.

Weghorst has only managed two goals and three assists for the team, and Ferdinand believes that he has both the creativity and play-linking skills necessary to succeed as Manchester United’s starting No. 10.

“I just think Man Utd’s No.10, a top team’s No.10 doesn’t look like a Weghorst in my eyes,” he told BT Sport. “Let’s look at it another way, if I’m [Jadon] Sancho, Bruno [Fernandes], [Alejandro] Garnacho, Martial and I’m sitting there watching him line-up as a no.10 in front of me, the no.10 shirt means something else, it’s a player that can create, has got guile, can get between the lines and get on the half turn and bring other people into play in that sense and get goals. He doesn’t offer all those things I’ve just said there… I think his best piece of play today was a tackle in his own box. That’s a no.10 – that’s not what no.10s are known for doing.”

Weghorst will leave Manchester United at the end of the current campaign since it is unlikely that he will secure a permanent deal with the club.

Ten Hag has made it obvious that he does want to add a goal scorer before the new season begins.

Prior to the summer transfer season, Harry Kane of Tottenham, Randal Kolo Muani of Eintracht Frankfurt, and Victor Osimhen of Napoli are all said to be targeted.

Ten Hag’s team will want to beat Wolves on Saturday at Old Trafford to return to winning ways in the Premier League.

Three of the players who were shortlisted will join 16 other players who have already been inducted into the Hall of Fame, according to the Premier League, which earlier this week announced that Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger had become the first managers to be inducted.

Fans can vote for the three players – who are only eligible if they retired before the start of the year – they want to enter the Hall of Fame, with the winning players set to be announced on Wednesday 3rd May.

Manchester United legend, Rio Ferdinand, has advised Tottenham striker Harry Kane to leave the club if he wants to win trophies.

On Sunday, Kane broke Jimmy Greaves‘ 266-goal record to become Tottenham’s all-time leading scorer, breaking the mark that had held since 1970.

In addition, his goal against Manchester City gave him 200 Premier League goals, moving him into third place after Wayne Rooney and Alan Shearer, who respectively had 208 and 260 goals at the end of their careers.

Although Kane has scored many goals, he has not yet had a significant medal in his professional football career.

Ferdinand stated on his Vibe with Five podcast that the 29-year-old England captain would have to leave Tottenham for a new team capable of winning trophies.

The former England defender said, “If he [Kane] wants to win trophies, I think he needs to leave Spurs and go to a team capable of winning – because I don’t see that happening at Spurs in the near future.

“No matter what happens, he’ll go down as one of the best goal scorers this league has ever seen, no matter what. Because the guy just knows how to put the ball in the back of the net in so many different ways.”

He added, “We spoke about this before. I want to hear Harry say it. Would you be happy to finish your career with no trophies but as the highest goalscorer in the Premier League’s history? If he says yeah, then that is it. Argument done. Whatever we say is irrelevant.”

When Antonio Conte’s team takes on Leicester City in their next Premier League match this weekend, Kane will look to build on his great performance for the team thus far.

When asked about the Portugal international’s lack of playing time, former United defender Rio Ferdinand said on his YouTube channel:

‘My only thought could be is that Cristiano Ronaldo is being saved for the weekend against Chelsea. That’s the only way that I see it, logically, that he did not play [last night]. I think Ronaldo will be absolutely fuming with that, naturally.

‘I wouldn’t expect anything different from him. I think the big problem Erik ten Hag has got is that, coming up to this next window, he has to think very carefully about what he does. If he doesn’t see Ronaldo as a starter in his team more often than not, I think he has to release him from his contract.

Rio Ferdinand has applauded Arsenal’s “fearless” Bukayo Saka and suggested Manchester United’s wingers may take notes from his approach to the game.

The 21-year-old has been in excellent form lately, scoring the game-winning goal in each of his team’s previous three matches across all competitions for the Gunners.

Saka scored twice against Liverpool, including the game-winning penalty, after the new season got off to a shaky start, followed by his fortunate winner against Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League.

With the game-winning goal against Leeds on Sunday, the Hale End academy graduate put the finishing touches on an incredible week that saw Arsenal increase their lead at the top of the standings to four points.

And according to Ferdinand, Saka should now be a guaranteed starter for the Three Lions at the World Cup taking place in a month after finishing the eighth last night in the Kopa Trophy rankings for the finest Under-21 player in the world.

He told Vibe: ‘In this form, you can’t look past Saka on that right-wing spot. I think in an England shirt he does as well.

‘He’s a winger who when he gets it, I’ve watched him a couple of times live this year as well, his first instinct and intention is to go past you. We spoke to Nani and he told us that was his intention.

As soon as he got the ball one vs one, he was looking to beat the full-back. I love that about him, he’s got no fear, he’s playing with a bit more maturity every time I see him.

‘He’s in a good vein of form with a club that’s in a good vein of form. He’s confident and if he’s in that mode getting into the World Cup I don’t see anyone starting in front of him.’

While Saka at Arsenal continues to improve, United’s wide players are still finding it difficult to understand the tactical demands of their new manager Erik ten Hag.

Despite scoring in three successive games for his new club, summer signing Antony was urged to show more variation by Ten Hag ahead of Sunday’s game against Newcastle during which he struggled to make a telling impact.

While teenager Antony Elanga hasn’t started a Premier League game since September 1, Jadon Sancho has struggled to consistently regain the form he showed at Borussia Dortmund.

‘We don’t seem to have the imagination in those areas,’ Ferdinand bemoaned. ‘We used to give it to Nani, Giggsy, to Becks even, give it to Antonio Valencia or Cristiano when he’s wide. Get him in a one-on-one situation, either with a good ball from Scholes or Carrick etc, get them one vs one and do your thing.

‘At the moment we get in those positions and unfortunately for us, our wide players are turning away from that, they’re not killing full-backs, they’re not skinning them.

‘The best teams wait for that moment in a game, you might only get two or three of those moments where they stand the full-back up, Saka does it at the moment as well as anyone in the league, and say right I’m going to ghost you.

‘At the moment our wide players aren’t doing that. Parts of their game are working functionally, other than the City game, they’re getting into a good shape, defensively they are doing well but it’s when we have the ball and want them to do that little bit of cherry on the top stuff. We aren’t getting that now.’

Ferdinand also asked Jesus if he considered himself more of an all-around forward or a No. 9 forward. He responded by saying:

‘It’s a good question because I cannot answer your question properly cause I want to score goals, If I want to score goals I have to arrive in the box, if I want to arrive in the box, I cannot drop deep a lot because in the end I don’t have power or time to get into the box.

‘But sometimes I can create for other players as well. I’m not [Kevin] De Bruyne, I’m not Martin [Odegaard], I’m not [Granit] Xhaka, but I can drop and help as well. The difference sometimes is about the manager. Sometimes I drop at City, but now I play more frequently and then I think you feel free, you just go there.’
