Controversial street-hop artist Portable, born Habeeb Olalomi Badmus, is back in the headlines, locking horns with fellow Nigerian singer Ric Hassani over their recent joint track, 4x2x16.

The Zeh Nation boss recently took to social media with a flurry of videos expressing his dissatisfaction regarding the financial terms of his contribution to the song, which has been gaining notable traction online since its release.

According to Portable, his manager brokered the initial agreement for the feature. However, now that the song is enjoying rising success, the singer insists he deserves more than what was initially agreed upon. He’s publicly demanding an extra ₦5 million from Ric Hassani and also threw in an unusual request for Canadian loud street slang for premium marijuana.

He didn’t stop there. Portable referenced his 2023 collaboration with British-Nigerian rapper Skepta, claiming that Skepta had personally called to commend his performance, something he believes Ric Hassani has failed to do or acknowledge.

“Don’t underrate me,” Portable warned in one of his posts, insisting his role in the song’s popularity should not be diminished or overlooked.

The episode has sparked a wave of mixed reactions online. While some music lovers criticized Portable for what they consider an unprofessional and greedy outburst, others faulted Ric Hassani for teaming up with an artist well-known for courting controversy and speaking without filter.

Despite the drama, 4x2x16 continues to perform well across streaming platforms, drawing attention both for its sonic appeal and the public spat between its collaborators. While Ric Hassani remains tight-lipped, Portable’s antics have ensured the track stays in the public eye true to his reputation for turning controversy into currency.

A bold fusion of soul, Afrobeats, and contemporary pop, Lagos Lover Boy dives deep into the emotional currents of love, heartbreak, healing, and self-discovery, all experienced through the vivid lens of life in Lagos. Each track is a heartfelt chapter, weaving an intimate narrative about relationships, pain, purpose, and the unyielding hope that follows loss.

With sounds rooted in the vibrant rhythm and cultural pulse of Lagos, the album captures everything from the timeless echoes of the talking drum to the city’s energetic chaos.

This sense of place anchors the music, while Ric’s introspective songwriting and signature silky vocals lend depth and sincerity.

More than just an album, Lagos Lover Boy is a love letter to the city, its people, and anyone who’s ever dared to love deeply, lost painfully, and yet found the courage to believe again. It’s a tribute to resilience, vulnerability, and the redemptive power of love.

Ric Hassani, known for his refined blend of Afro-pop, R&B, and soul, first captured hearts with his breakout 2016 single “Gentleman,” a cultural anthem that championed empathy and respect in relationships. The success of that hit led to his critically acclaimed debut album, The African Gentleman in 2017, which redefined the image of the modern African artist: suave, sensitive, and deeply intentional.

With subsequent hits like “Only You” and “Thunder Fire You”, Hassani showcased his evolving artistry and lyrical boldness, collaborating across genres while staying true to his emotional core.

Now with Lagos Lover Boy, Ric Hassani cements his place as one of Africa’s most compelling voices, a stylish romantic and storyteller who continues to challenge the boundaries of modern African music.

More than just a song, Moving Train is a sonic vessel of unwavering loyalty, powering through the noise of doubt and cynicism with the steady rhythm of love that refuses to derail.

Set to Hassani’s signature fusion of soul, pop, and African influences, it’s a modern lover’s anthem clad in steel — unflinching, focused, and emotionally charged.

“I’m still on a moving train to you,” Hassani sings with quiet defiance, reaffirming his unshakable commitment to love, even when the world doubts it. With poetic precision and heartfelt delivery, the track mirrors the relentless path of a locomotive — cutting through emotional terrain with both tenderness and might.

Renowned Nigerian record producer Samuel Oguachuba, affectionately known as Samklef, has recently stirred waves on Twitter by shedding light on his pivotal role in shaping the careers of several R&B and hip-hop stars in the Nigerian music scene.

In a series of tweets, Samklef proudly asserted his influence in nurturing talents like Simi, Ric Hassani, and the multifaceted Tunde Ednut. He also claimed mentorship over notable figures such as Dammy Krane and rapper Phenom.

Not stopping there, the ‘Molowo Noni‘ maestro reminisced about his contribution to the hits that catapulted artists like Wizkid, Olamide, and D’Prince into stardom.

He particularly emphasized his role in crafting six timeless tracks for Wizkid in the early stages of his career, as well as providing Vector with his breakthrough hit.

Despite his significant contributions to the music industry, Samklef expressed dismay at the tendency of some to overlook his achievements due to his modest demeanor.

In his own words, Samklef declared, “I discovered Simi. I discovered Ric Hassani. I discovered Tunde Ednut. I was a mentor to Dammy Krane, Flow sick, and Phenom. I gave Durela his 2009 hits, enemies, let me live my life.”

He continued, “I gave Vector his first major hits kilode. I gave Wizkid 6 classic hits. I gave myself ‘Molowo Noni.’ I gave D’Prince ‘Jonzing world.’ I gave Olamide his comeback hit song of 2013 ‘Stvpid love.'”

Asserting his resilience, Samklef likened himself to Utred from “The Last Kingdom,” vowing to return stronger despite the challenges he faces. He concluded with gratitude for the success of those he invested in, acknowledging their achievements as a testament to his legacy in the music industry.

Nigerian artist Ric Hassani has sparked a debate within the Afrobeats community with his recent comments on the genre’s quality.

In a candid statement during an appearance on Channels TV’s Rubbin’ Minds, Hassani asserted, “Most of the hit songs in Nigeria now are not very good music.”

Expanding on his viewpoint, he indicated a perceived decline in the quality of songwriting compared to previous standards.

“Back in the days, hit songs were serious music,” Hassani said. “Now almost anybody is just coming in [to the industry].” He attributes this decline to Afrobeats’ global success, suggesting a rush of new artists entering the scene: “Because Afrobeats is Nigerian music… our guys are top 10… I feel like the quality of music might be dropping because more people want to get in.”

Hassani further criticized what he perceived as an emphasis on money over artistry, stating, “Everybody is just dropping whatever they like and throwing money behind it.” This suggests that financial resources are prioritized over crafting quality music.

These remarks have elicited mixed reactions online. Some fans agree with Hassani, expressing concerns about a perceived decline in lyrical depth and musical complexity within Afrobeats. On the other hand, others defend the current sound, arguing that catchy melodies and vibrant production are integral to the genre’s success.

Ric Hassani’s critique is bound to stimulate discussions about the evolution of Afrobeats. Whether his comments catalyze a return to more focused songwriting or simply ignite debate remains to be seen. Nonetheless, one thing is clear: the conversation about artistic merit within Nigeria’s thriving music scene has been reignited.

Soulful singer, Ric Hassani returns to the music scene with his third studio album titled Afro Love.

Fifteen tracks total on the project, which highlights the artist’s development over time. Except the first single, I.G.D.T.
The Port Harcourt-born musician made the remarks while speaking as a guest on the newest episode of Quincy Jonze’s audiovisual podcast, Echo Room.

The singer claimed he received a job offer from one of the state’s commercial banks but turned it down after getting a call to sing at a wedding in Lagos.

He stated that while he was getting ready to start at his new work, a show promoter called to inform him that he had been booked to perform at a luxury wedding in Lagos.

He said Rekado Bankz was already mistakenly booked for the wedding because he has a song titled ‘Ladies And Gentlemen’ but the bride spotted the error that she requested for the person that sang ‘Gentleman’ and not ‘Ladies And Gentlemen.’

Ric Hassani said, “I got a bank job. I don’t think I can name the bank now. The day I wanted to go [resume], that very day, Shody The Turnup King called me for a show in Lagos.
“I was getting ready to go for my first day in the bank work, then this guy called me to come do a job and I was like, oh wow!

He sold out the show and was so appreciative of the love and support from his fans.

The artist has repeatedly shown the world that he is against love, and his debut album’s title, “Sex Over Love,” makes that clear.

Filling the pack adequately, Blaqbonez also mesmerised his fans with energetic performances from his catalogue.

These are the top 10 Nigerian heartbreak songs needed to endure breakfast

Despite what is often said, love is an inherently lovely thing. When people discover it, their lives are made magnificent, and they are able to grin, and here are the top 10 Nigerian heartbreak songs needed to endure breakfast.

Breakfast in this context literally means colloquially, the slang means this life is ‘turn by turn’ and everyone will definitely have a taste of everything, especially heartbreak.

Top 10 Nigerian heartbreak songs needed to endure breakfast

On social media, once someone says “he/she don chop breakfast” or “he/she has been served breakfast”, it simply means the individual’s heart has been broken

Top 10 Nigerian heartbreak songs needed to endure breakfast

1. Not The Girl – Darey

In 2008, Darey released one of the greatest songs about breakups ever. In the late 2000s, the song “Not The Girl” was a major smash that ruled the radio.

It might have become a TikTok success if it had been released in this decade.

The emotional intensity was increased by phrases like “You’re not the girl I used to know, you’re a shadow of yourself, I suppose I lost you a long time ago.”

2. Understand – Omah Lay

Many people are unaware that the popular song “Understand” by Omah Lay from 2021 is a breakup ballad.

The Nigerian musician was merely recounting a tale about how he went to great efforts to win the love of his life, giving her his necklace pendant and his final card, but was left ‘chopping breakfast’ and unable to ‘understand’ it in the end.

4. Last Last – Burna Boy

The newest is “Last Last.” Burna Boy publicly dated Stefflon Don, a British rapper, before breaking up with him, which inspired him to compose a song about it.

When Burna Boy sang, “Why you claim I did nothing for you when I for doing everything you want me to do, maybe another time, maybe another life, you will be my wife and we’ll do it right,” it was clear that he was in pain.

5. Don’t Call Me Back – Joeboy feat Mayorkun

In 2019, Mayorkun and Joeboy worked together on a song that tells a tale.

Simply put, “Don’t Call Me Back” is a song about a lover who still has feelings for the person who made him or her a “wonderful breakfast” and who threatens to hang up when the lover finally manages to move on.

<iframe title="Joeboy - Don't Call Me Back (feat.
The narrative is incredibly relatable.

6. Damages – Tems

The songs on the list thus far have been created by those who have received service. Here’s one for the “breakfast” servers (winks).

Tems was forced to serve her lover “breakfast,” probably in bed, because she was sick of being used as a pawn and couldn’t take any more “damages.”

7. Out of Love – Chike

This list would be lacking if Chike’s “Out of Love” wasn’t included. His tale seems to me to be the tale of many others.

It has to do with being in an unknowing open relationship. Because she was in love with so many other people, Chike assumed it was an exclusive relationship and was unaware he had a number.

I felt a lot of sympathy for him after reading lines like “said I thought I was the only one, say na me you call your number one.”

8. Bibanke – Asa

In the song “Bibanke” from her self-titled album, which was released in 2007, Asa talks about losing her partner, who was pretty much everything to her, treated her like a queen, and gave her the courage to face her fears.

In fact, no matter how favourable the circumstances turn out, “breakfast” may still be the outcome.

On “Emotions,” British-Nigerian vocalist Moelogo teams up with M.anifest.
