Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca remains confident that midfielder Enzo Fernandez will seamlessly reintegrate into the squad for their pre-season tour of the United States, despite the ongoing investigation into allegations of racism.

Fernandez had issued an apology after posting a live video in which he and several Argentinian teammates sang a song following their Copa America win that questioned the backgrounds of France’s black and mixed-race players.

This incident drew public criticism from Chelsea defenders Wesley Fofana and David Datro Fofana, with Malo Gusto and Axel Disasi, along with Fofana, unfollowing Fernandez on Instagram.

Chelsea has initiated disciplinary proceedings against Fernandez. Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday evening, Maresca addressed the situation. “I think it’s quite easy in terms of the player did a statement apologising, the club did the same,” the Italian said. “I don’t think there’s something to add in terms of this situation, it’s already clear and clarified.”

When asked if Fernandez might face issues upon his return to the squad next week, Maresca responded, “I don’t think so, to be honest. In the end, they are all human beings. I don’t think there is any bad intention from any one of them. So I don’t think when Enzo comes back we’ll have any kind of problem.”

He further explained, “As I said, the player already clarified the situation, the club did the same, there is nothing to add and once again, I think they are not bad persons or human beings, it can happen, but I don’t think it’s any problem at all. I spoke with Enzo, I spoke with all of them, as I said, the player already did a statement apologising, so it’s quite clear.”

Club captain Reece James also commented on the incident, saying, “It’s obviously a really difficult situation. I think Enzo acknowledged he did wrong and quickly put his hand up and apologised to the club, the team and the people offended.

He hasn’t arrived yet so I don’t know if there’s anything to amend. I’ll have to make that judgement when he comes back in. But I hope everyone will be on the same page and can kind of move forward from this situation. I’ve spoken to Enzo and everyone involved but the conversations have to stay in house.”

Chelsea’s pre-season schedule includes matches against Wrexham, Celtic, Club America, Manchester City, Real Madrid, and Inter.

During a recent interview alongside Lauren, who plays for Chelsea Women, the English defender shared this revelation. Speaking to media personality Marva, Reece mentioned, “Lauren’s favorite artiste is Burna Boy. She loves Afrobeats. I like it as well but not as much as her.”

Lauren chimed in, saying, “I listen to a lot of Afrobeats songs. I do love Afrobeats. It gets me in the mood [laughs].”

Likewise, German international Benjamin Heinrichs, of Ghanaian descent, has also declared Burna Boy as his favorite Afrobeats artist.

In other news, Burna Boy has disclosed that playing football was his first professional way.

He claimed to be a skilled football player, but he changed his career because he was better at goalkeeping and felt that he “didn’t feel important.”

The Grammy-winning musician revealed this in a conversation with British-Nigerian media figure Julie Adenuga.

Burna stated that he quit because he did not want to play goalkeeping for the rest of his life and thought the squad would do fine without him.

Chelsea has received another setback with the news that Reece James is set to be sidelined for approximately four months due to a hamstring injury that requires surgery.

The Chelsea captain sustained the injury during a 2-0 defeat to Everton earlier in the month. Mauricio Pochettino has revealed when Chelsea captain Reece James will return from injury and suspension.

Due to a hamstring injury sustained during a training session, the defender for England has been sidelined since their Premier League debut.

The FA banned him for one game just as he was about to make a comeback after he reportedly challenged a referee and used “improper and/or insulting and/or abusive words” during the Blues’ 1-0 loss to Aston Villa.

However, Pochettino shared a positive update on his availability before facing Burnley and said: “We are really happy with the way he is recovering. We hope that he has the possibility to be involved after his suspension.”

Mykhailo Mudryk, who had to be substituted at halftime due to a quad injury, was another question mark heading into the Burnley game.

However, according to Pochettino, the winger trained “well” this week and will join Moises Caicedo, who has also recovered from minor bruising, in the squad.

Chelsea has officially announced Reece James as the new club captain, taking over the role following the departure of Cesar Azpilicueta during the summer.

Azpilicueta, who had been with Chelsea for 11 years, left the club and joined Atletico Madrid as a free agent at the end of the 2022–23 season, relinquishing the captaincy in the process.

Contrary to speculations that experienced captain Thiago Silva would succeed Azpilicueta, the honor has been bestowed upon Reece James, a product of Chelsea’s academy.

Expressing his excitement about the appointment, James spoke to the club’s official website: “I’m so happy to take on the role and responsibility. Chelsea interim manager Frank Lampard has revealed that Reece James and Mason Mount are unlikely to play again this season.

Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital are the owners of the Blues, who are floundering toward the conclusion of a disastrous debut season.

Lampard is the team’s fourth head coach this season; according to reports, Mauricio Pochettino is in line to secure the long-term position.

Chelsea’s disappointing season continues on Wednesday with the visit of west London neighbours Brentford, though Lampard revealed in his pre-match press conference that his side will have to solider on without academy graduates James and Mount.

“Reece James is unavailable, probably for the season,” Lampard began.

“Mason Mount, the same. Potential [to return] for the last game of the season but probably not. That’s obviously disappointing for us.”

Lampard added: “They’re big players. Reece had a hamstring injury that he picked up in the midweek game [against Real Madrid], got through the game but scanned it the following day.

“Mason has been carrying this pelvic injury for quite a while, definitely predates myself [after being named caretaker manager]. Chelsea player Reece James has opened up about his “hate” for the January transfer window after Chelsea spent over £300million on eight new signings last month.

The 23-year-old right-back, who came through the Blues’ academy, has missed significant periods of the 2022–23 season due to a knee injury.

Since the summer, his team Chelsea has spent more than £600 million on players, thanks to Todd Boehly, the club’s new owner who took over from Roman Abramovich.

The west London club spent around £300 million on transfers alone in January, breaking the previous British record to recruit Enzo Fernandez from Benfica for £106.8 million and bringing in Ukrainian international Mykhailo Mudryk for £88.5 million.

In all, eight players were signed by Chelsea in January, including Joao Felix on loan from Atletico Madrid for £10 million over a six-month period. Seven of these players were given permanent contracts.

One player they decided to sign was 19-year-old Malo Gusto from Lyon, who has been loaned back to the French club and is expected to provide competition for James at right-back next season

James, speaking to Sky Sports on Monday, has revealed that he is not a fan of transfer windows.

‘The transfer window is one of my biggest hates,’ he said. ‘The January period is always so busy with many games and then you have transfer noise.

‘It’s all a bit too much in one month, I don’t really listen to much… it’s a crazy month.’

Chelsea FC have announced and completed the signing of right-back Malo Gusto, who will spend the remainder of the season on loan with Lyon.

The Blues needed a new right-back to replace Reece James straight away and provide some competition, but after focusing on Gusto in the middle of the season, they discovered that Lyon was unwilling to part with the 19-year-old.

Chelsea decided to stick with the deal for Gusto rather than move on to another target, and According to reports, a fee of about €30m was agreed upon for the Frenchman.

Gusto has returned to Lyon to complete the season, and Chelsea has now confirmed that he has signed a deal that spans until 2030.

Since making the transition to the Lyon senior setup last season, Gusto has received a lot of accolades in France. Before joining Chelsea, he made 54 appearances for the French team and contributed six assists.

He becomes the Blues’ seventh signing of the winter, following Joao Felix, Mykhailo Mudryk, Benoit Badiashile, Datro Fofana, Andrey Santos and Noni Madueke in heading to Stamford Bridge.

According to reports, Chelsea have held talks with Lyon over the signing of right-back Malo Gusto.

With the additions of Joao Felix, Mykhailo Mudryk, and Noni Madueke this month, the Blues have been busy reinforcing their offence. However, right-back is another area of focus for Chelsea as they continue to struggle without Reece James.

Sources have already revealed that conversations have been had with Lyon about Gusto, a 19-year-old right-back, and the club executives are aggressively trying to recruit a new right-back.

Chelsea’s interest in Gusto was initially made known in October when scouts from Stamford Bridge, as well as those from Arsenal, Barcelona, Manchester City, and Manchester United, observed the young defender.

Now, the Blues have made their move to try and recruit Gusto, whose current Lyon contract has just 18 months left to run.

Gusto fits into Chelsea’s current transfer model – attempting to recruit a team of young stars – and is seen as viable competition to James, who remains the club’s clear first-choice for the position when fit.

Lyon are well aware of their battle to keep Gusto, both in terms of a transfer and concerning his expiring contract, but they are determined to hold on to the teenager for at least the remainder of the current season.

The French team is unwilling to part ways with a starting defender halfway through the season because they missed out on playing in Europe last season and are further behind this time around. They have dropped to ninth in the Ligue 1 standings and are currently 12 points outside of the qualification spots.

Chelsea might pursue a contract that allowed Gusto to stay with Lyon for the following six months, but the Blues are presently prioritizing a permanent transfer to strengthen a position that has consistently been difficult to fill when James is injured.

33-year-old Cesar Azpilicueta, who made his 500th appearance for Chelsea in Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Liverpool, has struggled to match James’ output and Graham Potter has often resorted to using centre-back Trevoh Chalobah out on the right instead.

Chelsea has a number of targets in mind to fix their right-back weaknesses, including Gusto, Denzel Dumfries from Inter, and Pedro Porro from Sporting CP.
