Former world number one Rafael Nadal has officially announced his retirement from professional tennis, marking the end of a legendary career.

Nadal shared the news on Thursday, October 10, 2024, via his social media accounts, revealing that the upcoming Davis Cup, set to take place from November 19-24, 2024, will be his final tournament.

In an emotional video, the Spanish tennis icon reflected on the challenges he has faced in recent years, explaining that after a storied career, it was the right time for him to step away from the sport. Nadal, known for his incredible determination and resilience, leaves behind a legacy that includes multiple Grand Slam titles and an indelible impact on the tennis world. He said:

“The reality is that it has been some difficult years, these last two especially. I don’t think I have been able to play without limitations. It is obviously a difficult decision, one that has taken me some time to make. But in this life, everything has a beginning and an end. I am very excited that my last tournament will be the final of the Davis Cup and representing my country. I think I have come full circle since one of my first great joys as a professional tennis player was the Davis Cup final in Seville in 2004. I think it is the appropriate time to put an end to a career that has been long and much more successful than I could have ever imagined.”

After suffering a hip flexor injury during his unexpected second-round defeat at the 2023 Australian Open, Rafael Nadal is expected to be out for six to eight weeks.

Despite being the tournament’s top seed and having won 22 consecutive major tournaments, the 22-time major winner was unable to successfully defend his title at Melbourne Park and was defeated in straight sets by American world No. 65 Mackenzie McDonald.

His wife Maria was seen sobbing in the audience as the 36-year-old Spaniard, who is currently ranked No. 2 in the world, admitted he was “destroyed mentally” after suffering his first Grand Slam exit in seven years.

Nadal has now provided an update on his serious muscle rip injury and is expected to be out for up to eight weeks. This makes him questionable for Indian Wells at the beginning of March, but he will be able to play again in time for the French Open.

‘He will be resting once back in Spain and will start with anti-inflammatory physiotherapy,’ Nadal’s team said in a statement with the tennis legend not due to come back to the ATP Tour until sometime in March.

‘The normal time estimated for a complete recuperation is between six and eight weeks.’

The statement follows an MRI scan Nadal had on his left leg on Thursday which revealed the grade two injury in his iliopsoas muscle.

Nadal, speaking after his Australian Open exit, revealed that he did not want to retire through injury during his second-round defeat to McDonald.

‘I can’t say that I’m not destroyed mentally at this time because I will be lying,’ Nadal said. ‘It’s hard for me.

‘I considered it all the time, stopping… I just wanted to finish the match. That’s it… I didn’t want to retire, to be the defending champion here. I didn’t want to leave the court with a retirement. I have been a couple of days like this [with injury]. But nothing like today in that movement.’

Serbian professional tennis player Novak Djokovic has finally claimed his 90th career ATP Tour title by easily defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final of the Astana Open in Kazakhstan.

The Serb won 6-3, 6-4 in just 76 minutes, securing his spot at the ATP Finals in Turin, Italy, in November.

Djokovic won the Tel Aviv Open in Israel the week previous, and his victory at the Astana Open marked his second straight triumph.

The victories on consecutive days mark Djokovic’s impressive comeback to the Tour after missing nearly three months and the entire North American hard-court swing, including the US Open, due to his lack of immunizations.

Djokovic will undoubtedly enter the prestigious ATP Finals as the favourite, despite falling to seventh in the world rankings due to his absence from tournaments in North America.

After the match, Djokovic told the ATP, “I’m just very grateful and blessed to be able to play this well at this stage of my life,” 

“You know, 35 is not the same as 25, but I think the experience probably in these kinds of big matches and big occasions helps as well to approach mentally in the right way.”
