The Gabonese striker had a “nightmarish” stint at Stamford Bridge after he joined from Barcelona in the previous summer, registering just three goals and one assist in 21 appearances for Chelsea. Aubameyang ultimately left and moved to Marseille on a free transfer where he signed a three-year deal.

The former Arsenal striker now claims that he set the fastest time during Chelsea training last year because, despite turning 34 in June, he still feels more than capable of competing at the highest level.

“I feel very good. Little anecdote, I held the record for speed at Chelsea last season in training. 36 km/h. So at that level, I think I’m alright,” he told reporters.

We wanted to use Hakim [Ziyech] and Carney [Chukwuemeka] to break from wide and Conor [Gallagher] to break from the centre because you know you’re going to get driven back a bit. So that was the thinking.”

Aubameyang finds himself tumbling down the pecking order at Chelsea, with the 33-year-old striker failing to start a game since being hauled off 64 minutes into his reunion with former club Arsenal on November 6.

Portugal forward appears to be on his way to West London for a loan fee of €11m (£9.7m), with Chelsea reportedly set to pay his £270,000-a-week wages in full. While Aubameyang has not yet been put on the market by the Blues, the Evening Standard reports that the club have received an inquiry from Atletico for the 33-year-old, whose name was mentioned in negotiations for Felix.
