The double honour offered some relief for the English champions following their midweek disappointment against Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League.

Semenyo’s triumph stands out as a particularly remarkable feat. The Ghana international, who joined City in a January transfer reportedly worth $84 million (£62.5 million), became just the second winter signing in Premier League history to win February’s Player of the Month award immediately after moving clubs.

The only player to achieve the same feat previously was Bruno Fernandes, who did so for Manchester United in 2020.

The winger had already been in fine form before leaving AFC Bournemouth, signing off with a stoppage-time winner against Tottenham Hotspur. He wasted little time making an impact at his new club.

Semenyo scored on his Premier League debut for City at the Etihad Stadium against Wolverhampton Wanderers and went on to net three goals in five league appearances throughout February.

“This is a brilliant moment for me,” the versatile winger beamed via club channels following his first-ever triumph in this particular individual award. “To win the Premier League Player of the Month award so soon after joining City is something I’ll never forget.

“My focus now is on continuing to improve and helping City to achieve the best possible results. We have so much to play for and I am really excited about this final period of the season.”

Meanwhile, Guardiola ensured City completed a clean sweep of the monthly awards after guiding his side through a strong run of results in February. The Spanish tactician oversaw four league victories during the month as City strengthened their push in the title race.

Their impressive form was only slightly dented by a 2–2 draw against Nottingham Forest, but that match took place at the start of March and was therefore outside the voting period.

However, the club’s 3–0 defeat to Real Madrid in the Champions League painted a very different emotional picture behind the scenes.

Midfielder Bernardo Silva later described the atmosphere inside the dressing room after the loss as “really bad, really dark.” Reports suggested the players were visibly devastated following the defeat.

According to the Daily Mail, the City squad were so disheartened after the game that some of them could not even bring themselves to shower before boarding the team bus back to the hotel. The journey was said to have been unusually quiet.

“In these weeks we’re not going to win a lot but we can lose a lot,” Bernardo warned.

Despite the difficult European night, the individual awards for Semenyo and Guardiola underline the strong domestic form City produced throughout February.

Still, the team’s focus remains firmly on collective success as the season approaches its decisive final stretch.

Ouattara has been one of Brentford’s standout players in February, contributing two goals and two assists. The forward also scored decisive goals against Aston Villa and Newcastle United, while playing a key role in the club’s 1–1 draw against Arsenal.

Gyökeres also had his moments during the month. The Swedish striker delivered a second-half brace against Sunderland after coming off the bench and later scored twice again during February’s north London derby. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta praised the performance as one of the best displays of the striker’s debut season.

Manchester City’s push to keep pace with Arsenal has been driven by the attacking contributions of Semenyo and O’Reilly. Both players managed to outscore Erling Haaland in February and have benefited from tactical adjustments introduced by manager Pep Guardiola.

Meanwhile, Šeško proved decisive for Manchester United, scoring three goals during the month — each of which directly contributed to a positive result for the club. Without those strikes, United would have dropped several crucial points in the league table.

Liverpool captain Van Dijk also made the shortlist after returning to a level close to his best form during February, providing defensive stability for the Reds.

Carrick is widely viewed as the frontrunner after guiding Manchester United to 10 points from a possible 12 in February. Although the team’s performances were not always convincing, the results ensured the club maintained momentum under the former midfielder.

If Carrick wins the award again, he would become the first manager since Ange Postecoglou to claim the honour in consecutive months, a feat last achieved in September and October 2023.

Brentford boss Andrews also continues to earn recognition for keeping the club competitive despite a summer that saw the departures of several key figures, including their captain, goalkeeper, top scorers, and former manager.

Meanwhile, Slot guided Liverpool through a mixed month that included a defeat to Manchester City, narrow wins over Sunderland and Nottingham Forest, and a chaotic 5–2 victory that left fans with as many questions as celebrations.

Guardiola’s City side, however, recorded the most wins in February, strengthening their title challenge — though a defeat to Forest at the start of March slightly dampened that momentum.

The winners of the February awards are expected to be announced soon, as the Premier League season continues to heat up heading into its decisive final months.

So far this season, no player or coach has managed to win their respective awards twice, but that could change on the players’ side this month. On the managerial front, however, December is guaranteed to crown a fifth different winner.

December 2025 Premier League Player of the Month nominees

Dominic Calvert-Lewin (Leeds United)

Rayan Cherki (Manchester City)

Hugo Ekitiké (Liverpool)

Phil Foden (Manchester City)

Erling Haaland (Manchester City)

Morgan Rogers (Aston Villa)

Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa)

Harry Wilson (Fulham)

Leeds United’s revival in December owes a lot to Dominic Calvert-Lewin. The striker found the net six times in five league games, helping Leeds climb out of the relegation zone. Victories over Chelsea and Crystal Palace, combined with draws against Liverpool, Brentford and Sunderland, highlighted a gritty and productive month.

Manchester City dominate the shortlist with three nominees. Rayan Cherki was a creative force, producing four assists and a goal as City stormed to five wins. Phil Foden delivered at the other end, scoring four goals and adding an assist to cap off a strong run of form.

Erling Haaland, who picked up the award back in September, is eyeing a second win after another ruthless month in front of goal. The Norwegian recorded five goals and three assists, underlining his status as one of the league’s most feared forwards.

Liverpool’s Hugo Ekitiké kept pace with Haaland, also scoring five goals. His strikes proved decisive against Tottenham Hotspur and Brighton, while he grabbed a brace in a high-scoring draw with Leeds.

Aston Villa are also well represented. Morgan Rogers ended December with four goals, while Ollie Watkins hit five during Villa’s impressive winning streak, which stretched to 11 matches before coming to an end against Arsenal.

Fulham winger Harry Wilson enjoyed a standout month as well. He chipped in with two important goals and four assists, playing a key role in pushing the Cottagers into the conversation for European qualification.

Daniel Farke (Leeds United)

Pep Guardiola (Manchester City)

Arsenal may be missing from the player shortlist, but Mikel Arteta remains in contention for managerial honours. Despite dealing with a defensive injury crisis, he guided the Gunners to five wins from six matches, strengthening their grip at the top of the table.

Arteta’s December campaign featured two clashes with Unai Emery’s Aston Villa. While honours were shared overall, Villa recorded a notable win against Arsenal and also defeated Chelsea and Manchester United, keeping themselves firmly in the title race.

Down at the other end of the table, Daniel Farke deserves recognition for Leeds United’s turnaround. The Yorkshire side went unbeaten throughout December, navigating tough fixtures against Chelsea and Liverpool. A tactical reshuffle proved effective, helping Leeds pull clear of immediate danger.

Pep Guardiola rounds off the shortlist after Manchester City closed out 2025 in perfect fashion, winning all five of their league games. With three City players nominated for Player of the Month, the Spaniard’s inclusion comes as little surprise.

As expected, the shortlist is packed with standout performers who lit up the pitch with goals, grit, and game-changing moments.

From strikers who couldn’t stop scoring, to midfielders running the show, and managers quietly masterminding statement results September had it all.

Player of the Month Nominees

Six names make up this month’s roll call of excellence, led by Manchester City’s unstoppable hitman Erling Haaland.

1. Erling Haaland (Man City)

No surprises here. Haaland smashed in five goals in September — three more than anyone else — and had a hand in six goals overall, pushing his tally to eight for the campaign.

2. Daichi Kamada (Crystal Palace)

Kamada has been the heartbeat of Oliver Glasner’s unbeaten Palace side. In September, he created five chances, won 17 duels, and bossed games against Sunderland, West Ham, and Liverpool.

3. Yankuba Minteh (Brighton)

The Gambian winger made a statement with a goal or assist in every game he played this month. His highlights include a smart assist in the 2-1 loss to Bournemouth, a goal in a thrilling 2-2 with Spurs, and another assist in Brighton’s 3-1 win at Chelsea.

4. Robin Roefs (Sunderland)

Newly promoted Sunderland owe a lot to their goalkeeper. The Dutchman kept two clean sheets, made 13 saves (second-most in the league), and was crucial in the Black Cats’ unbeaten September, which included draws against Palace and Villa, and a win over Forest.

5. Granit Xhaka (Sunderland)

At 33, Xhaka is proving age is just a number. The midfielder set up both of Sunderland’s goals in September, won 23 duels, and added steel and creativity to the side’s remarkable return season.

6. Martin Zubimendi (Arsenal)

The Spaniard enjoyed a breakthrough month, scoring his first Premier League goals. He netted a brilliant volley against Forest and followed it up with a rare brace a header sealing Arsenal’s 3-0 win.

Manager of the Month Nominees

The dugout also had its heroes. Four coaches stood out for masterminding results that have reshaped the early table.

1. Mikel Arteta (Arsenal)

Arteta’s Gunners stayed strong, crushing Forest 3-0, battling to a late draw with Man City, and edging Newcastle late on results that pushed Arsenal up to second.

2. Oliver Glasner (Crystal Palace)

Palace remain the league’s only unbeaten side, thanks to Glasner’s sharp touch. September saw a gritty 0-0 with Sunderland, before back-to-back wins over West Ham and Liverpool sent a message to the rest of the league.

3. Pep Guardiola (Man City)

City turned on the style yet again, scoring nine and conceding just two in September. A dominant 3-0 derby win over Manchester United, a tough 1-1 draw at Arsenal, and a 5-1 demolition of Burnley showed Pep’s men mean business.

4. Regis Le Bris (Sunderland)

The surprise package. Le Bris’ Sunderland defied the odds with an unbeaten September, ending the month in fifth.

They conceded just once even while playing with 10 men in a 1-1 draw at Villa held Palace to a stalemate, and edged Forest away from home.

During his post-match press conference, Guardiola was visibly moved when asked about the game. He explained that his emotions were not only tied to the result but also to a moment of personal worry.

“I was watching [for] my daughter! I tried to look for her but I didn’t find her! And at the end, when everybody went home to drink a good beer, I saw my daughter! So I was watching if I could find her, but I didn’t find her, and at the end I found her…”

On the pitch, City had taken an early lead through Erling Haaland’s ninth-minute strike, but a late substitution from Mikel Arteta turned the game on its head, with Gabriel Martinelli firing in an 87th-minute equalizer to deny the champions all three points.

Guardiola also reflected on his side’s tactical approach, admitting that while counter-attacks are not City’s preferred style, they remain a necessary part of elite football.

“We will try to not be like this. We will try to not be like this. But, when the opponent is better, and we defend deeper, and we have Erling [Haaland] or Tijjani Reijnders, we can use the counter-attack, yes.

But our intention is not like that. Sometimes in 10 years when we won the leagues and other titles, always we make counter-attacks. You remember Leroy [Sane] and Raheem [Sterling]? You remember how many counter-attacks we did, with Kevin [De Bruyne]? You remember? I’d prefer not to, but you cannot expect at this level not to do it. It’s impossible.”

City, who remain in the title race despite the draw, now turn their focus to upcoming fixtures against Burnley, Brentford, and Everton, where Guardiola will be eager to see his team return to winning ways.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has voiced deep concerns about the toll the newly expanded FIFA Club World Cup (CWC) could take on his squad, warning that the 2025/26 season might be “destroyed” by the packed schedule.

Guardiola’s comments echo recent criticisms by ex-Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp, who earlier slammed the tournament’s format and its impact on player welfare.

City are one of the elite European sides already confirmed for the 32-team competition, which will take place in the United States next summer.

While Guardiola is focused on the short term, he admitted that the long-term implications of adding another demanding tournament to an already relentless calendar are troubling.

“I try not to think about it, otherwise I will be so anxious,” Guardiola told journalists. “We will rest the time the Premier League allows us to. And game by game, month by month, we will see. And maybe in November, December, January, ask me, Pep. I may say: ‘So listen, we are a disaster. We are exhausted. The World Cup destroyed us.’”

The Spaniard said his priority for now is ensuring his players can regroup and re-energize, adding: “I try to be relaxed, to enjoy the days here, the good vibes that we have, the competition, to try to win it. And the most important thing, to recover, to find or re-find ourselves what we were. This is my main target in this tournament.”

Guardiola also backed Klopp’s stance, shedding light on their shared frustrations over the congested football calendar.

“I know where his idea comes from,” he said of Klopp’s criticism. “We fought a lot when we went to UEFA meetings, especially on improving the Premier League calendar and giving managers and players more rest. So his comments didn’t surprise me. I understand him. I respect him. I’ve had an incredible relationship with Jurgen over the years, even as rivals.”

Despite empathizing with Klopp’s frustration, Guardiola accepted that coaches must adapt to the realities of modern football. “At the same time, we are in a job. We follow FIFA, UEFA, and Premier League rules. Many teams might complain about these competitions because they aren’t part of it. If they were here, they’d likely enjoy the prestige, the media presence, the fanfare, and the revenue.”

Asked if he would prefer a longer pre-season instead, Guardiola didn’t hesitate. “Would I love to have two months to prepare for next season? Yes. Would I love to be refreshed? Yes. But it is what it is.”

The 2025 tournament in the U.S. will be the first edition under the new 32-team format, with many questioning the sustainability of such a demanding fixture list.

Manchester City’s Club World Cup journey continues on Monday as they face Al-Hilal in the round of 16. With forecasts predicting rain and possible lightning delays, Guardiola remains focused on getting through the fixtures without any major setbacks.

As City continue to chase silverware across all fronts, Guardiola knows the line between glory and burnout is becoming increasingly thin.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has emphasized patience regarding Rodri’s return to action following a serious knee injury.

The 2024 Ballon d’Or winner has resumed first-team training after recovering from an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury sustained in September 2024 — an injury initially thought to end his season.

Despite growing hopes of an early return, Guardiola insists the Spanish midfielder will only play again once given full medical clearance.

“The moment the official doctor says Rodri can start to play minutes, after that he will start to play minutes… It was a difficult injury… seven to eleven months, the doctor said,” Guardiola told reporters. “Every session he feels better, but we have to be careful.”

Rodri’s absence has coincided with City’s dip in form, with the defending champions currently fourth in the Premier League and battling to secure Champions League qualification. His potential return could provide a crucial boost, especially with the FA Cup still up for grabs, but Guardiola is wary of the risk of relapse.

City face Wolves this Saturday, a side on a red-hot winning streak, in a fixture that could define the final stretch of their season.

The Premier League has unveiled its shortlist for the April 2025 Player and Manager of the Month awards, with Wolverhampton Wanderers and Newcastle United leading the charge after both clubs enjoyed standout months.

Player of the Month Nominees—April 2025

Rayan Ait-Nouri (Wolves)

Harvey Barnes (Newcastle United)

Alexis Mac Allister (Liverpool)

Jacob Murphy (Newcastle United)

Morgan Rogers (Aston Villa)

Ryan Sessegnon (Fulham)

Jorgen Strand Larsen (Wolves)

Wolves could break a long-standing drought, as the club has never produced a Premier League Player of the Month in the award’s 31-year history. Ait-Nouri and Strand Larsen, instrumental in Wolves’ six straight wins, aim to change that.

Strand Larsen and Barnes led the scoring charts with four goals each, while Jacob Murphy and Morgan Rogers dazzled with their creativity—Murphy racking up three goals and three assists, and Rogers leading the league with four assists.

Liverpool’s Alexis Mac Allister earned a nod for the quality of his goals, including two stunning top-corner strikes.

Manager of the Month Nominees – April 2025

Vitor Pereira (Wolverhampton Wanderers)

Unai Emery (Aston Villa)

Pep Guardiola (Manchester City)

Eddie Howe (Newcastle United)

Arne Slot (Liverpool)

Though newly crowned champion Arne Slot led Liverpool to Premier League glory, Vitor Pereira is the overwhelming favourite for the managerial award. His Wolves side posted a perfect five-win April, part of a six-game winning streak not seen at the club since 1970.

Newcastle’s Eddie Howe earned a nomination despite missing half the month due to illness, while Emery and Guardiola delivered strong performances with their respective sides.

Football icon Lionel Messi has opened up about the two individuals who have left the deepest mark on his journey in the sport.

Now 37 and dazzling fans in the MLS with Inter Miami, Messi is widely hailed as one of the greatest players of all time. But even legends have their mentors and inspirations.

In a candid interview, the Argentine captain revealed that Pep Guardiola and Ronaldinho were the two figures who shaped his footballing path the most.

According to Give Me Sport, Messi praised Guardiola—his former coach at Barcelona—for completely changing the way he saw football. Under Pep’s guidance, Messi reached unprecedented heights, winning numerous titles and evolving into the phenomenon the world came to admire.

“Pep had a huge impact,” Messi said. “He was my coach for many years, and we achieved things together that we never imagined. He gave me a new perspective on the game.”

But before Pep came into the picture, it was the magic and warmth of Ronaldinho that guided a young Messi through his early days in Barcelona’s first team.

“Ronaldinho was crucial,” Messi shared. “The way he welcomed me, supported me—it meant a lot during my first steps with the senior squad. He even assisted my very first goal.”

Messi also took a moment to mention other important teammates and friends, including Andres Iniesta, Xavi, and his current Inter Miami colleagues Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba, and Luis Suarez, all of whom have played vital roles on and off the pitch.

He also offered a heartfelt tribute to the late Tito Vilanova, calling him a deeply missed figure in his life and career.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has confirmed that Ilkay Gundogan’s contract has been automatically extended, though questions about the midfielder’s long-term future remain.

Gundogan, who initially left City for Barcelona in 2023, made a surprising return to the Etihad just a year later following financial instability at the Catalan club. Upon his comeback, the German international signed a one-year deal which included a clause to extend his stay until the summer of 2026—triggered by the number of appearances he has made this season.

Speaking after City clashes with Crystal Palace, Guardiola praised Gundogan’s resurgence, stating:

“He now has another year on his contract, that’s certain. What happens this summer, I can’t say, but he’s officially with us until 2026. The Gundo we saw today, and against Leicester and Bournemouth, is the same Gundo who led us during our treble-winning campaign—vital, sharp, intelligent.”

Guardiola went on to emphasize the team dynamic affecting individual performance:

“When the team struggles, individuals do too. It’s never just about one player. But when the team finds its rhythm, players like Gundo shine again. He’s been essential to us, but we’ve not always supported him in the right way.”

While Gundogan’s contract extension keeps him at the club on paper, it doesn’t guarantee he’ll remain beyond the current campaign. With Kevin De Bruyne likely to depart and other seasoned players nearing the end of their City tenures, Guardiola might look to lean on Gundogan’s leadership and experience through this transitional phase.

After a rocky restart following his return, Gundogan has found his form again, starting City’s last five matches. As the season nears its climax, he’s expected to be instrumental in City’s push for Champions League qualification and their bid to lift the FA Cup.

The Ballon d’Or winner suffered the setback just five weeks into the campaign, with Guardiola initially ruling him out until the following year. However, Rodri remained determined to return in time for the Club World Cup in July.

That optimism grew last week as the 28-year-old resumed individual training—a significant milestone, even though he remains far from full match fitness.

Now, Guardiola admits there’s a chance Rodri could meet his ambitious target of returning before the 2024/25 season wraps up.

“The fans should know they’re not the only ones excited,” Guardiola said. “It’s been five or six months, but we have to take it step by step. We can’t make reckless decisions to rush his return.

“He’s still not close, but he’s touching the ball again, he’s back in the dressing room, and he feels confident and happy. Initially, I didn’t expect him to return before the end of the season or even for the Club World Cup—but now, maybe it’s possible.”

City have battled injuries all season, and their struggles continue, with Guardiola confirming that Nathan Ake could be facing a lengthy spell out, joining fellow defenders John Stones and Manuel Akanji on the sidelines.

The Premier League has announced the nominees for the first Player and Manager of the Month awards of 2025.

Seven players from six different clubs are in contention, including December’s winner, Alexander Isak of Newcastle United, who aims to become the first player to win back-to-back awards since Marcus Rashford in February 2023.

Meanwhile, four managers are in the running to claim the first managerial honor of the year, with the league set to crown its fifth different winner of the season.

No player in the Premier League scored more goals in January than Phil Foden, who has rediscovered top form for Manchester City. The dynamic midfielder found the net six times in just four games against West Ham, Brentford, Ipswich, and Chelsea, also providing an assist against Kieran McKenna’s side.

Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo made history in January, setting a new Dutch record by scoring in a sixth consecutive Premier League home game, surpassing Robin van Persie and Ruud van Nistelrooy. He capped off the month with a standout performance against Ipswich.

In defense, Bournemouth’s highly sought-after center-back Dean Huijsen earns a nomination after making an immediate impact. Since his introduction to the starting lineup, the Cherries have gone unbeaten, securing victories over Everton, Newcastle, and Nottingham Forest while drawing against Chelsea. His teammate Justin Kluivert also shined, registering five goals and two assists.

Reigning Player of the Month Alexander Isak is aiming to defend his crown following an electrifying January for Newcastle United. The Swedish striker bagged five goals, bringing his season tally to 17 in just 21 appearances, while also recording his fifth assist of the campaign.

Crystal Palace fans had plenty of chances to chant about Jean-Philippe Mateta, who delivered four goals in as many games, punishing Chelsea, Leicester, and West Ham.

Rounding out the shortlist is Brentford’s ever-reliable Bryan Mbeumo. With four more goals in January, the forward also created 13 chances for his teammates—only three players in the league managed more.

No team earned more points in January than Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal. The Gunners secured 11 out of a possible 15, including a crucial North London derby victory over Tottenham, keeping them firmly in the Premier League title race.

After a difficult end to 2024, Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City found their rhythm again. City won three of their four games, scoring a combined 13 goals against West Ham, Ipswich, and Chelsea, while grinding out a hard-fought 2-2 draw away at Brentford.

Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United had a brief setback against Bournemouth but otherwise enjoyed a strong month. Wins over Tottenham, Wolverhampton Wanderers, and Southampton saw the Magpies finish January in fifth place.

Bournemouth continued their impressive unbeaten run, which stretches back to late November. Andoni Iraola’s side added Everton, Newcastle, and Nottingham Forest to their list of scalps while earning a well-deserved 2-2 draw with Chelsea, leaving them just one point outside the top four.
