Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed that Matt Doherty’s move to Atletico Madrid is permanent rather than on loan.

On deadline day, According to reports that the Irishman was in talks with the Spanish club for a straight six-month loan, with Spurs willing to transfer some of their existing right-back options to make room for Pedro Porro.

However, with time running out to complete deals, it became apparent Tottenham would not be able to send Doherty out on loan.

According to FIFA regulations, only eight senior players may go on loan in a given season; Spurs have fully utilized their quota.

Due to the fact that Doherty would have to leave on a long-term basis for a transfer to be legally recognized, Spurs chose to mutually terminate his contract in order to make a transfer to Atletico Madrid possible.

Pedro Porro has stated that he skipped Monday’s Sporting CP training because he was keen to seal a last-minute transfer to Tottenham Hotspur.

Recall, in December that Spurs had made contact with Sporting over a potential January transfer for Porro, but were told they would need to pay his €45m release clause upfront.

Tottenham has finally agreed to pay €48m in various instalments after a protracted month of negotiations.

As conversations continued into this week, Porro, who was previously scheduled to have a medical in London on Monday, was forced to postpone his trip.

To create way for Pedro Porro, who will join Spurs from Sporting CP on deadline day following a difficult few weeks of negotiations, Spurs had been hoping to transfer some of their present right-sided alternatives this month.

In order to finalize a straight six-month loan to Rennes, Djed Spence is in France. According to sources, Doherty is currently on his route to Atletico Madrid.

Spurs have spent the majority of this month in negotiations with Sporting over a deal for Porro, who has long been their top target to bolster their right wing-back position.

After Sporting played Porto in the League Cup final on Saturday, it appeared for the majority of last week that Porro would be moving to north London. However, on Monday morning, it was revealed that a deal was in limbo because the clubs had yet to agree on a transfer cost.

Porro, whose personal terms with Tottenham have already been agreed upon, was given permission to skip Sporting training on Monday while the clubs tried to reach an agreement.

And we understand that an agreement is now in place for Porro to join Spurs for a fee of around €48m paid in several instalments.

Sporting will now also receive 65% of any future fee for Tottenham academy graduate Marcus Edwards, with Spurs retaining 35%.

He is set to undergo a medical at Hotspur Way on deadline day and is set to sign for Tottenham prior to Tuesday’s 11 pm transfer deadline.
