And what started as a Hip-hop Award has become the Nigerian Grammy.

Maybe you watched the show, or you didn’t and you’ve been seeing updates about it, all cool. Okay, quick, as it’s still blowing hot, here are ten things we at “Mp3bullet.ng” learnt from the 13th Headies.

Wizkid

Wizkid Is An Icon

Okay, you’ve probably heard the Headies was a major flop, yesterday. And that’s the cause of one man, as we have it. Wizkid. Wizkid incidentally was holding the “Starboy Fest” concert at O2, in London, the same time the Headies was on.

A collision happens every time, but this was different. It’s a full disruption, as all the biggest stars in Nigeria were out in London, supporting the Starboy. Burna Boy won four awards at the Headies, but he was in London. Then there was Don Jazzy, Olamide, Fireboy, Tiwa Savage, Reekado Banks, Oxlade and the biggest surprise, Naira Marley.

If this taught us anything, it’s that Wizkid is an icon. And not even the Headies could hold him back, a bit.

Zlatan Ibile

Street Hasn’t Fully Taken Over

Zlatan Ibile is the biggest of all the artists in the Next Rated category. At least we thought he was. But he lost. Didn’t just lose. He lost to Rema.

If he had won, this would have been the year where a street artist goes into the Headies and win a major award. Olamide didn’t get it in 2011, Lil Kesh couldn’t in 2015, and Zlatan lost in 2019. The street hasn’t taken over. Guess we’ll just have to wait another four years.

Don Jazzy

Don Jazzy Knows The Game

Don Jazzy is one of the most successful musicians and businessmen in Nigeria, and from time to time, well, he keeps wowing us with his surprises.

Besides, he’s groomed some of the biggest artists in the country, over the past decade. And not only did he take them mainstream, but they also brought home Headies. Last night, Rema brought the third Next Rated award to Don Jazzy. After Wande Coal and Reekado Banks.

Maybe Don Baba J just knows his onions well?

Rema

Rema Is Here To Stay

Who would have thought the young kid would win? I mean, we all knew he was promising, but how he would beat Zlatan Ibile and Victor AD was still a concern. Especially when both Victor and Zlatan were in two other big categories.

But, did our minds get blown? Hell yeah. Rema won, and if that tells us anything, it’s that the boy ain’t going anywhere!

Teni

The Women Can Now Win If They’re Good Enough

Teni has changed the game, really. She won most of the best awards available at the 13th Headies, including “Song of the Year”, “Best Female Vocals” and “Best Pop Single.”

Maybe there was a time the women were discriminated against, it’s all over now. With this, I believe any girl that’s tough can go in and win as much as she wants!

Patoranking

Dancehall Is Gone

Year over year, the dancehall genre in Nigeria has been on a steady decline. And all the major dancehall stars are not relevant anymore. Even Burna Boy had to switch up to Afrobeats, to keep the ball rolling.

But that’s just what we thought. Until now. The Headies don’t have a category for dancehall anymore? No more Ketchup wins, or Patoranking? So sad.

Falz

Good Music Always Wins

Singing nonsense used to be the trend, around here. Many people even thought it’s what Nigerians like and that nobody’s can blow up doing good music. But what the hell?

Falz did “Moral Instruction”, an album that talked about real-life issues and got rewarded for it, winning two awards. Johnny Drille is the good music guy, and he’s winning Headies now, too. Many people don’t even know who Wurld is, but on headies night, that changed, when he won a major award. Why did he win? Good music and that’s what we promote on “Mp3bullet.ng”.

A-Q

AQ’s The Next After MI

The whole beef thing, that M.I Abaga and Vector have done this year has made us lose sight of who’s really worthy for the throne, in 2019. Really, that will be A-Q. After three ‘classic’ hip-hop albums, and all that he’s done this year (The PVC Story, Martell), hm, he’s the next.

And you know lyricist on the roll is based on the bars, though. He beats Payper, Boogey and the Show Dem Camp duo, and won the most coveted hip-hop award, in Nigeria. A-Q is the man!

Loose Kaynon Ain’t That Good

Loose Kaynon Ain’t That Good

Another one for the lovers of hip-hop, right here. Loose Kaynon talks anytime every MI or A-Q has something to say. But is he really that hard? Is his pen game too elite for merry men?

Well, he was on “Crown” song alongside Ghost, Tec and A-Q. In fact, it’s his song. But the other three got Lyricist on the Roll nominations and what did he get? Nothing. Maybe DavoLee was right when he said he’s from the feeders team. LOL, that’s what this is!

In an unexpected move, 100 Crowns has unified one-time enemies Blaqbonez and Tentik – both of whom exchanged vicious bars on targeted diss records – with hip-hop upstart Payper Corleone on “Passport”; delivering one of the hip-hop records of the year.

On “Passport”, the three unflappable rappers trade aggressive and often intricate bars, each displaying witty wordplay and a clear awareness of its theme. While no one could have foreseen this collaboration, I doubt anyone will be too disappointed about the end result.

What’s the occasion? No, it’s not another “Define Rap” and it’s not just subliminal shots anymore. Things seem to have gone out of hand, as both of them have now called each other’s name out, on separate diss tracks. And for many, it got interesting.

The history of friction between the two of them go way back beyond 2017’s You Rappers Should Fix Up Your Life, or Vector’s 2018 Cool FM interview.

That was just about the time it started getting serious. We’re talking of a rivalry that spans across a decade, a couple of albums, cyphers and guest verses. It’s just like Modenine vs Ruggedman. The only difference is, Modo and Ruggedy got into the booth quickly to settle the beef, by murdering each other. Besides, neither M.I or Vector seems to be as good as Mode9 was back then.

But how did the diss start in 2019 and how did it escalate? How did it become the platform on which Nigerian hip-hop is resurrecting on? Not such a long story, but one good enough to tell our kids, I suppose.

M.I Abaga was the first to go into the Studio, this year, taking multiple shots at Vector. Not just Vector, but also Hennessy. Hennessy, the popular cognac company, has been the main power behind the annual Hennessy Cyphers and VS Classes, which for many years (even years when M.I forsook the throne) was the only hope hip-hop and rap music in Nigeria had. Every year, new cool cats, usually underground guys come together and do something cool, cyphers that are usually refreshing and being the spirit alive.

M.I Abaga

In the last couple of years, though, we can say the quality of lyrical content and magic in these cyphers has declined. Most people didn’t care, the Nigerian economy has gone down, too, and no one is complaining. The state of the rap game has gone down rapidly, too. But M.I noticed, and wouldn’t keep shut about it. In his opinion, if he was the brand ambassador for Hennessy, the Cyphers would be better. That’s a lot to ask for, though, because Vector’s livelihood probably depended on his ambassadorship to Hennessy, since he’s not actively doing music.

When M.I got something going on with another brand Martell, who actually is not that much of a competition to Henny, when it comes to the business, it changed everything. He had a platform to school not only Vector and Hennessy but also everyone who was watching how it should be done. So, on the first-ever Cypher, he came in with his LAMB crew and did some bars. While A-Q and Blaqbonez were just trying to earn their bragging rights, Loose Kaynon, his deputy, took a couple of shots we believe were aimed at VEC and M.I did the same. “There’s no rapper I can beef with, I son ’em all…”

Vector Tha Viper

There was peace after that, relatively. But then the Hennessy Cyphers and it was much worse than before. Better aesthetics paid rappers, higher budget than before, apparently, but it was still lacking in content. And that opened the doorway for more criticism and shots at Vector tha Viper, the man who’s the face of the Hennessy Artistry, in Nigeria. A couple of Social Media kerfuffle happened, but it didn’t stick.

Not until Blaqbonez said he’s the best rapper in Africa, and other underground guys, mostly repping the Hennessy came for his head. It wasn’t long before the LAMB guys teamed up again and did the second coming of the Martell Cypher, called The Purification. On this one, M.I went straight for the heads of all the rappers, Vector especially and even those who went after Blaq.

That was what prompted Vector to pick Payper and Vader, two Hennessy guys with him for “The Purge” a track that dissed M.I, Blaq, Choc City and all M.I’s ‘dumb fans’. In about a week, Vector came in again with “Tetracycling”, a straight diss, which most people think is lightweight. That desperation gave M.I the opportunity to reply with fire, “The Viper” which detailed all of the Vector’s weaknesses and how he could correct them. Maybe it was just punchline, but The Chairman even offered to sign Vector.

Vector’s made it clear he’s going to reply when he tweeted that he wanted a beat for the response. The tweet started with “Lol” and that alone speaks a volume. No doubt, M.I is winning and probably will emerge victorious when this is all over, but should VEC have an edge over him, there’s no coming back from this because all of Vector’s shortcomings have already been used. He wouldn’t have anything else to say, in the event that Vector was to bring something to the table.

Whichever way it happens, this year it will all be settled. And what will be settled exactly? Nobody knows? Who the best rapper is? People will always take sides, for sure. Who is the greatest? Subjective, too. But after 2019, there’s a good chance the diss between Vector and M.I is over, for good!!

In other news, DMW boss and pop star, Davido is also making rounds for suggesting that his protege Dremo diss M.I Abaga. He did this, when Dremo who is currently embroiled in a war with DavoLee, posted a diss track on Instagram. “M.I next, please,” the Blow My Mind singer commented.

We’re not sure about what’s going to happen, though. And then, Blaqbonez has done his own diss track for Vector, “Exile.” Perhaps this will end as a Game of Thrones, where everyone in the industry has to take sides? If it goes down really, whose side are you gonn’ be on?

So VEC has Replied; Check Out The Editorial Here.

Summer of ’17, Jude M.I Abaga (a veteran rapper and businessman, known for his decade long reign as one of Africa’s finest, and his CEO-ship at Chocolate City) started a whole new conversation, about how hip-hop was faring on Nigeria.

Honestly, that time, not great. All rappers were done switching up, the garbage on the streets was increasing, and “street dey yarn say rappers no dey blow again.” M I, as the Chairman, didn’t like that, so he got in the booth. Of course, we all know it was more of a way to revive his own career than it is to wake up rappers. But it actually worked!

Blaqbonez, a young rapper who has been grinding for years, joined in the conversation and dropped a ‘shady’ reply to M.I’s single. He blew up and now he’s part of M’s clan. He even got an album. That wasn’t just it, though. Guys also started rapping again returning home like the prodigal son.

Then Summer of ’18, M.I dropped his second album in eight months, A-Q and Loose Kaynon teamed up for a mixtape and Blaqbonez dropped his long-awaited studio album. They called it the LAMB project. The hype up worked and they were popping. With the success of the previous LAMB stuff they did another. This time, a Cypher. Then the diss started when M.I threw a shot at Hennessy. He only started it though, because in the months that followed, Blaq has single-handedly added more wood to the fire than any other person.

The biggest agigation came when he said he was the Best Rapper in Africa. Most underground rappers who think the black boy he’s just like them, didn’t take it as just another joke as they started going into the booth one one after the other, recording diss tracks for Blaq. Blaq’s “Best Rapper in Africa” single threw shots at Payper, Tentik and Holyfield.

Thereafter, they released the second Cypher, and this time M.I said most of the powerful words, saying that he made it safe for rappers in ’08 but they still hate him. Reminisce recorded “OGB4IG”, a reminder that’s he’s been doing this long before. But VEC? He’s always waited for a chance to tear M.I apart, so he did his own Cypher too, “The Purge” featuring Payper and Vader (who had words for Blaq and A-Q.)

BUT, in the past week, things have escalated as Vector dropped another diss track, “Tetracycling” aimed directly at M.I, who promised to reply. Then Davolee, who has also been disrespected by Blaqbonez went into the studio and did “Giveaway,” dissing not just Blaq but also M.I, Falz, Payper, A-Q, Vader, Loose Kaynon, Ladipoe, Dremo and Ycee. Tongues have been wagging ever since.

Dremo immediately released “Scape Goat”, a reply to Davolee and David who seems to be on fire has replied with “Light Weight” another short response to Dremo.

While the youngings are doing theirs, M.I has also done “The Viper”, a letter to Vector. Altogether, we’re talking about almost twenty tracks from angry rappers raining curses on each other. And there’s still more to come. Apparently, this is what it takes to keep hip-hop alive in Naija. May it never end!

And as we step into the eighth month of the year, the heart of summer, it’s not without love from out guys in the music industry. Yeah, we look forward to more party music, like never before.

September is still young, anyway and most of the songs trending now are probably songs released in the course of last month. That’s not to say the guys ain’t already dropping new music, though. But of all those long lists of songs released in August, which are Top 10 Naija Songs (Nigerian Songs)? The ones still trending? You can say, the best.

Guess we’ll just find out!

Wizkid – Joro

Wizkid is now ready for 2019, we believe. And his “Made in Lagos” should be here anytime from now. “Joro” which we’ve waited on for quite a while, is here though. The NorthBoi production is all shades of the new Wizkid sound. It’s relevant, to say the least.

And even though it was just a day, it managed to rock September and is still trending!

Wizkid – Ghetto Love

First off, “Ghetto Love” isn’t a street song (he did say a few “gbese” on the track, though.) It’s just love the way Wizkid does it. Afro loving, with all the good and positive vibes, flowing around. And he didn’t just jump on any shit, he had Kel P and Killertunes work on the jam. The sound, at the very least, is contagious. And very positive, and powerful.

Tiwa Savage – 49-99

“49-99” marks the beginning of that great future we talk about when we say international deals. In the past, our artists in Nigeria haven’t really been able to hold on to their deals with foreign labels, maybe because the deals are half-baked or are missing something. Tiwa Savage, though, is likely to be our first break out on that front. The Nigerian Dream, as we know it.

The music, which is her own way of doing the Fela thing (nothing she’s not tried before, though) samples from one of the Legend’s catalogue, from ’78. Not just the “forty-nine sitting ninety-nine standing” reference, but also the music. From the saxophone, to the specific percussions and the female backups (c’mon!!), everything reeks Fela Kuti. And the tempo was managed, keeping it Afro, even despite its consistent kicks and beats. Fire!

Naira Marley – Puta

Naira Marley is a beast and he knows how to make the streets go gaga. That’s exactly what he did with this “Soapy” follow-up. “Puta” (or Pxta) is a mad street jam, and the reception was massive, since he’s got everyone hyped up before.

“Puta” is still one of September’s hottest!

Zlatan x IVD – Bolanle

“Bolanle” is the same tempo as “This Year” but this is the first time I’ve heard a storyline on a Zlatan song, in a while. It’s capturing, somehow. And then the hook, the pause of the beat, and the systematic “bolanle pepper dem” makes the song catchy. Catchy enough that you would start singing it, unconsciously.

Street aside, this is real music that you can feel in your veins. It’s just like when Small Doctor’s “Penalty” was street, but then was more than just street.

DMW – On God ft. Davido, Mayorkun, Dremo

It’s not a DMW year, but doesn’t mean they’re not doing their best to stay on top of their game. “On God” is a big one and it has the three main guys from the Davido imprint, just having fun on some big afropop beat. Issa vibe.

M.I Abaga x Blaqbonez x A-Q, Loose Kaynon – The Purification (Martell Cypher)

Martell Cypher II, is like the second coming of Bad Meets Evil, they all got a lot to say. Blaq is fresh off his beef with guys who don’t think he’s good enough to be best in Africa. A-Q is keeping a low profile, but does he have bars? Hell yeah! M.I got ’em covered, digging up some really deep shit. He actually numbered the rappers in SA, Ghana and Kenya.

Rudeboy – Audio Money

“Audio Money” which has an infectious afro-beat, with all those percussion roll-in’s Rudeboy loves, isn’t just a song that’s trending because it’s from someone we actually like. It’s got the vibe, and also a message. And it couldn’t have come at a better time. This time that Shatta Bandle is giving so many niggas inferiority complex and driving them to opt in for ‘fake lavi da loca’. The message is loud and clear.

Naira Marley x Young John – Mafo

Young John has been low-key, for far too long. The last time we heard from him was “Ello Baby” when he feautured Kizz Daniel and Tiwa Savage. Truth is, Young John is one of those producers that if a big artist doesn’t have a song with, we ask why. We even ask how that artist became ‘big’. And his work on high tempo beats is like Thor swinging his hammer. Now add all that to the raving Naira Marley energy, “Mafo” is what you get.

Adekunle Gold – Young Love

Adekunle Gold is married, and y’all know what married artists do. Retire or just go silent, for a while and then storm back one day again, dropping a song. Expecting us to catch the vibe.

We can say, Adekunle, however has still been pretty much active since his marital status has changed, and his personal life isn’t even interfering with the career. “Young Love” is a groovy thing, not the usual Adekunle Gold, but the one we’ve been getting for a while now. So, it’s OK.

Worthy Mentions

Then, we had the reply to the M.I Abaga-led Cypher, led by Vector, “The Purge” Payper and Vader also came in with the Viper. And, Sound Sultan dropped “Odo”, a real vibe featuring an unlikely cast of Teni, Mr Real and Olu Maintain.

“Ride For You”, Phyno’s big collaboration with Davido, off his album is a mad one. Falz the Bahd guy also came through with “Loving”, as Reminisce kind of replies M.I with “OGB4IG.”

September worked out, after all.

M.I Abaga said some real truth on his verse on “The Purification.”

https://www.instagram.com/p/B2ti-25nqxr/

For instance, he said he’s not getting any appreciation, and that what he’s doing for the rap game could be called “charity, poverty alleviation.” Deep, but it’s true. Like when he also said he made it ‘Safe’ in 2008, but all he sees these days is hate, we all felt that. But you know what we would feel more? Someone who could roast him.

Truth be told, all the guys who have dissed MI on tracks, in the past are quacks, who won’t even make the top 10 when it comes to rap skills. Except for maybe when Olamide was still a rapper. So, chance or not I don’t know and I don’t care, but M.I has gotten away with all of the subliminal shots he’s thrown over the years.

We understand that Blaqbonez is coming up, he can do whatever he likes, pull a Kendrick Lamar on us all, no problem. But what happens though, when someone who is considered a legend is becoming too cocky? Nah, we ain’t gonna ask our sisters why M.I is too cocky, we’re just gonna put VEC in the booth, and watch “The Hunger Games.”

First off, this conversation is deeper than what’s on the surface right now. M.I’s “You Rappers Should Fix It Up” is a piece that has dealt with the conscience of many rappers, and it’s been two years. It started this whole conversation. Or better still, reopened it. Even Blaqbonez’s career started when he did his reply to M.I. So it’s not actually fair if everyone goes dumb.

The problem is, though, you get the Blaqbonez to get in the booth, but you can’t get Olamide to stop doing his shit. Man still did “Science Student”, one of the biggest street jams and a couple of other shaku-shaku vibes. It’s not like what the Choc boss said affected him, one inch. Nah. The same way you can’t get anybody that’s a top dawg to diss you. It just doesn’t make sense.

But for many years the “M.I vs Vector” rivalry has existed. Somehow, you couldn’t love them both. And they’ve never really crossed paths, in the past. Some fans think M isn’t as lyrically sound as Vector, and that’s why he wouldn’t let them do a track together. Maybe that’s right, or maybe it’s the other way round. It doesn’t matter. A collabo was never going to happen.

A beef, though? Why the hell not? M.I had to overstep his boundaries, though, and VEC jumped in the booth, taking along two guys who have problems with M’s team (Blaqbonez and A-Q). M.I thought he did the ‘purification’, but no, what he did was start a war, “The Purge.” We’re gonna need another purification after this.

Payper and Vader did their stuff, using almost everything Blaq has said and done as weapons against him. While Vector just came in flat out all offensive on M.I Abaga. He even body-shamed the short man. Wtf! See, so we asked who’s the winner? That’s the problem with beef, he who laughs last, usually laughs best. So, unless this cycle is gonna continue, Vector murdered M.

Next time though, I think we should all consider why Vector is one of the most suitable candidates for “Lyricist On The Roll” and M.I naturally isn’t. M.I’s got the team, and at this point, all that could save him is some branding techniques.

VEC doesn’t have a record label or a protege that can stand against M’s, but we should know there are more angry rappers waiting for the opportunity to follow Vector to the war against indiscipline!
