After getting injured against Southampton, Alejandro Garnacho is questionable for Thursday’s match between Manchester United and Real Betis.

Even though the Argentine winger had only been on the field for 15 minutes, a challenge with Kyle Walker-Peters in the closing ten minutes of Sunday’s scoreless draw forced him out in stoppage time.

After being seen leaving Old Trafford on crutches and Erik ten Hag admitting that Garnacho had sustained an injury, worries about his condition increased.

The 18-year-old was eventually partially replaced by Fred to strengthen United’s defence late in the contest when Southampton’s towering attacker Paul Onuachu came off the bench.

Garnacho’s injury was regarded as “not too bad” by Ten Hag, who said that the substitute was also made for tactical reasons because he also added Harry Maguire to secure the point.

“He was limping a little bit after a bad tackle,” confirmed the manager.

“So in the end I thought they bring on another striker, a tall one, I don’t want to go for a risk, we were already down to 10, to go to maybe 90 per cent, that’s why I took him off but I think it’s not too bad.”

Ahead of the international break, United hosts Fulham in the FA Cup on Sunday after playing Betis in the previous week.

The inclusion of Garnacho in the world champions’ roster may potentially put his participation in Argentina’s games against Panama and Curacao in jeopardy.

The search for a new striker for Southampton is over after Nigerian forward Paul Onuachu signed a contract to play at St. Mary’s Stadium until 2026.

Southampton officially announced the signing of Nigerian striker Paul Onuachu from Genk.

28-year-old Onuachu, who stands at a whopping 6’7, is the top scorer in Belgian football this season with 16 goals in 19 games.

Prior to his transfer to St Mary’s, which is believed to have cost the Saints a cool €20 million, the Nigerian international scored 29 league goals in the 2020–21 season and was on pace to break that record.

Speaking in a press release about the signing, manager Nathan Jones said: “Paul is a significant signing for us and completes what has been an extremely positive month in terms of recruitment.

“He’s a handful to play against, has got a tremendous record throughout his career and he’s also someone who brings great experience with him, so he’ll be a really positive addition to the squad.”

In an effort to move up the Premier League standings, Southampton has been looking for extra firepower. Earlier in the transfer window, they signed deals for full-back James Bree, winger Mislav Orsic, and midfielder Carlos Alcaraz.

Additionally joining from Rennes is winger Kamaldeen Sulemana, completing a club-record transfer on Deadline Day.
