He started off as the “urban highlife” prince under YBNL and has grown into one of the most refined and stylish voices in today’s Afrobeats scene. AG baby has since been blending Fuji, highlife, pop, and soulful storytelling and this has earned him a lasting legacy.

Humble Beginnings: From Graphic Designer to Gold

Born Adekunle Kosoko, a descendant of the royal Kosoko family of Lagos, Adekunle Gold didn’t begin his career in a recording studio. In fact, he was a talented graphic designer. If you ever saw some of YBNL’s cover arts from back in the day, there’s a chance AG Baby designed them.

In 2015, he made a striking entrance into the Nigerian music scene with his debut single “Sade“, a soulful highlife rendition of One Direction’s “Story of My Life.” The song wasn’t just a cover; it was a bold artistic statement. Soon after, he signed with Olamide’s YBNL Nation.

Adekunle Gold’s first album, “Gold” (2016), dropped while he was still under YBNL. The 16-track project was a beautiful blend of Yoruba highlife, storytelling, and love ballads. Songs like “Orente,” “Pick Up,” and “Ariwo Ko” painted him as a soft-spoken, culture-rooted gentleman in a music industry full of pop heavyweights.

His time under YBNL was crucial. It gave him a platform, resources, and visibility. But even more importantly, it showed Nigeria a different flavor of pop, one that had Fuji, highlife, and emotional depth all rolled into one.

One of the most beautiful parts of Adekunle Gold’s journey is his relationship with fellow artist Simi. They’ve created musical magic together from “No Forget” on his debut album to “By You”, and most recently “Look What You Made Me Do” off his latest album “Tequila Ever After”.

Reinvention and Global Sound

After leaving YBNL, Adekunle Gold rebranded. No longer just the soft-spoken crooner in native attire, he returned as AG Baby, a bold, stylish, and genre-bending star. His sophomore album “About 30” (2018) showed artistic growth, touching on themes of purpose, faith, and heartbreak.

Many people didn’t think that 9ice, the Nigerian music star, would have such a huge impact on Nigerian music when he released his album, Gongo Aso on March 15, 2008. Even though it’s been 17 years, this record is still a classic in the history of African music. Its sound and cultural significance make it timeless.

The record Gongo Aso is a big deal in both Nigerian music and 9ice’s career. The release of Gongo Aso was a welcome change. It came out at a time when Nigerian music was shifting from traditional Afrobeat to a more modern mix of hip-hop, highlife, and rap. The 14-track album became a classic right away, connecting with music fans of all ages as it captured the energy of the streets, the knowledge of the leaders, and the thrill of city life.

The main song, “Gongo Aso,” became an anthem and is one of the best songs on the record. It not only topped the charts in Nigeria, but its catchy tune and catchy sounds also got a lot of attention in other countries. The song undoubtedly gained popularity due to its constant play in bars, clubs,tv,radio and the streets. Pasuma said, “In 1984, Alhaji King Wasiu Ayinde released an album called ‘Talazo ’84’.’ The album was everywhere; worldwide.

“So, I decided to go into music because I was a footballer. I was invited to CODAK 85 [1985 FIFA U-16 World Championship]. I was among four players picked from a club in Shogunle.

“Unfortunately, I wasn’t picked to go to the World Cup, so that was when I decided to go into music.

“I was a professional footballer. So, that was how I ventured into music. The rest is history today.”

Singer Adekunle Gold also had his fair share of losing someone special in 2019. Sometimes around May, news broke that the singer’s dad passed on after battling a strange illness. Although, Gold did not address the loss until June when he spoke about it.

Veteran singer cum broadcaster, Rotimi Martins, popularly known as Alariwo of Africa lost his father to the cold hands of death in November, 2019.

In July 2021, Tiwa Savage announced her father’s passing via her Instagram handle. Little was known publicly about Tiwa’s father, but the singer hinted that he had been ill for a while.

On July 23, 2022, Mavin Records CEO, Don Baba J announced the death of his mother on his  Instagram page. He revealed that his mother died early on Saturday morning after suffering from cancer.

On October 24, 2022, Raoul John Njeng-Njeng aka Skales announced the passing of his mother via his Instagram page. The cause of the death was not disclosed, however, the singer wrote, ”My ANGEL, I will miss you forever. It hurts.”

In April, 2023 Alhaja Adijat Kuburat, the mother of Fuji music star, Wasiu Alabi aka Pasuma died. Pasuma announced this in a post via his verified Instagram page. “My jewel, I will miss you forever! Words fail me…”

Wizkid

Superstar Wizkid is currently bereaved. The pop singer lost his mother, Jane Dolapo Balogun, to the cold hands of death in the early hours of 19th August 2023.

Queen Bee, a member of the YBNL Nation, has defended Afrobeats sensation Fireboy DML after he faced criticism for his performance at president-elect Bola Tinubu’s pre-inauguration celebration.

The event took place on Thursday, May 25, 2023, and no fewer than 46 performers were contracted for it. The “Peru” crooner was one of those who accepted the offer.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) youth organized the ‘RenewedHopeConcert‘ event to honour the role that young people performed in the general elections.

Naira Marley, Waje, Brymo, Asake, Fireboy, Kcee, Asake, Timaya, BNXN, Pasuma, Tony Tetuila, and Seyi Vibes are a few more artists that also performed.

However, his supporters were incensed by his behaviour and lambasted him on Twitter for disregarding their sentiments.

Reacting to the backlash, Queen Bee disclosed that Seyi Tinubu was the person who took Fireboy to meet his boss, Olamide.

She tweeted;“Lol most of them don’t know Seyi Tinubu introduced Fireboy DML to Olamide.”

Controversial Nigerian artist, Habeeb Okikiola aka Portable, has disclosed that he turned down a request to perform at Bola Tinubu’s pre-inauguration celebration.

For the performance, which took place on Thursday, May 25, 2023, no fewer than 46 musicians were engaged.

According to Portable, he was one of those invited but declined since the organizers intended to take advantage of him.

He stated that the Inauguration management team told him he would only receive N5 million, despite the fact that they told him the budget for artists was N10 million per head.

The Zazuu star claimed that because it enraged him, he declined the invitation, tore up the offer, and blocked the caller’s number.

Naira Marley, Waje, Brymo, Asake, Fireboy, Kcee, Timaya, BNXN, Pasuma, Tony Tetuila, and Seyi Vibes are just a few of the artists who gave performances.

He said; “Na so dem call my manager say make I come perform for Abuja, say na N10 million dey drop oh, but na N5 million go reach portable hand. Na so I no gree, I tear the paper, I delete their number. No be me be star? Na im make me no perform for Abuja oh!”
