Veteran Nigerian singer, songwriter, and actress Onyeka Onwenu reportedly passed away at 72. According to The Vanguard, the legendary performer died Tuesday night after collapsing during a performance at a birthday celebration on Banana Island, Lagos.

Onwenu, a celebrated icon in Nigerian music and film, was rushed to a hospital in Victoria Island where she was later pronounced dead, as reported by The Guardian. Her family has yet to release an official statement confirming the news.

Born in 1952 in Obosi, Anambra State, Nigeria, Onyeka Onwenu began her illustrious music career in the 1980s with the release of her debut album, “For the Love of You,” in 1981. She gained widespread acclaim with her hit song “One Love” and continued to release numerous successful albums and singles throughout her career.

In addition to her musical achievements, Onwenu was also a talented actress, starring in several Nollywood films and earning numerous awards for her contributions to the entertainment industry. She was a trailblazer in Nigerian music and film, known for her powerful voice and compelling performances.

Onwenu’s influence extended beyond the arts, as she was actively involved in politics. She served as the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture Chairperson and the Director-General of the National Centre for Women Development. In 2011, she was honoured with the National Order of the Federal Republic (MFR), recognizing her as one of Nigeria’s most influential women.

Onyeka Onwenu’s passing marks the end of an era for Nigerian entertainment, leaving behind a legacy of artistic excellence and cultural impact.

The Nigerian music scene is rich with a thriving culture which is no surprise why a lot of modern-day age artists sampled old Nigerian records in their songs.

Sampling is the act of taking parts from an existing song and using them to make a new one. This could be verses, choruses, or instrumental bits. Sampling demonstrates a global appeal, with musicians from different continents utilising Nigerian music to create music for a global audience.

Sample: Aimasiko by Ebenezre Obey (1987)

The song “Aimasiko” from Simi’s “Simisola” album is among the album’s most sentimental tracks. It is a straightforward excerpt from the timeless masterpiece “Aimasiko” by Chief Ebenezer Obey. The record, along with a few others, was released in 1987.

Obey, on the other hand, is well known for his use of Christian spiritual themes in his songs and has since retired into a ministry of Nigerian gospel music in the early 1990s.

Jaiye Jaiye- Wizkid feat. Femi Kuti

Sample: “Lady” by Fela Kuti (1972)

WizKid looked determined to pay full respect to Fela with his 2013 track, in which he sampled an apparently random Fela track.

Without caring whether or not it fits with his song, Starboy incorporated Fela Kuti’s “Lady” into his 2013 hit track “Jaiye Jaiye.”

Mercy- Adekunle Gold

Sampel- Dem Go Pose by Baba Fryo (Mid 1990s)

Adekunle Gold kicked started his 2022 with the melodious song, “Mercy” off his album, “Catch Me If You can”. “Mercy” is a pop record that samples Baba Fryo’s Denge Pose lyrics.

On it, Adekunle Gold prays for God’s mercy in order to identify fake friends with fake love and overcome his enemies.

Opotoyi(Marlians) – Naira Marley

Sample: “Papa Worldwide” by Obesere

Naira Marley’s “Opotoyi” was released during the time the singer was having arguably the biggest challenge of his career.

At this time, he was fighting a battle to avoid going to jail after being arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in relation to internet fraud. This challenge, however, did not deter him from going about his primary duties as he dropped “Opotoyi” on June 7, 2019.

The song which was a hit despite its vulgar lyrics has an interpolation of Obesere’s hit track, “Papa Worldwide”

PBUY- Asake

Sample: “Shakomo” by The Remedies (1998)

Asake is currently one of the Nigerian music Industry’s favoured sons as he keeps rising out hits after hits. One fo his hits, “Peace Be Unto You(PBUY)” is an uptempo Afro-Amapiano tune produced by Asake’s favourite producer, Magicstick.

The song samples “Shakomo” by the defunct Hip-Hop music group, The Remedies which was one of the biggest songs in Nigeria in the ’90s.

My Love- DJ Tunez ft Adekunle Gold

Sample: Can’t Just Stop Thinking about You by KWAM 1

In this collaboration with DJ Tunez, Adekunle Gold sings about happiness and love in a song titled ‘My Love” that samples KWAM 1’s Can’t Just Stop Thinking about You.

Anifowose- Olamide

Sample: “Orin Abode Mecca Medley” KWAM 1

Off Olamide’s Baddest Guy Ever Liveth Album, “Anifowose” is a sombre melodious track that draws listeners in whether or not you understand Yoruba.

The song was sampled off KWAM 1′s 1989 hit record, “Orin Abode Mecca Medley”.

Baby Answer- Runtown

Sample: “Eddie Quansa” by The Peacock highlife band

In 2014 at the peak of his career, Runtown dropped the song, ‘Baby Answer‘. Runtown samples Peacock highlife band’s The Masquerade soundtrack and brought in more flavour, modernizing it to fit with the recent times.

Temper remix – Skales ft Burna Boy

Sample: “Sorrow, Tears and Blood” by Fela Kuti

One of the hits of 2017 is Skales’s Temper remix featuring Burna Boy. The song which is on his “Never Say Never Guy” samples Fela Kuti’s “Sorrow, Tears and Blood” song.

Bank Alert- P-Square

Sample: Iyogogo by Onyeka Onwenu

“Bank Alert” is a 2016 song by Nigerian pop duo P-Square. It was recorded in Igbo and Pidgin English and samples lyrics from “Iyogogo” by Onyeka Onwenu.

Veteran singer, Onyeka sends her congratulatory remarks to Reno Omokri.

Nigerian music legend, Onyeka Onwenu has congratulated former Presidential Spokesman, Reno Omokri as he emerged as Business Insider’s Business Influencer of The Year.

Reno alongside Tony Elumelu, Dr. Ola Brown, Vusi Thembekwayo, and Victor Asemota were nominated by Business Insider.

The best-selling author emerged as the winner with 74.67 percent of over 200,000 votes.

Reacting to this, the veteran singer, Onyeka sent a congratulatory video to Reno which he posted on his Twitter page.

“Congratulations, Reno Omokri. Business Influencer of The Year from such a reputable organization, well, it is well earned. 

“Reno, you are a good man. A great influencer, a very positive supporter of great causes and you would never say die, and you would never give up. You stick to it and you get it done. There’s much more coming for you, my friend. Well done and I wish you the very best…!

Music legend, Onyeka Onwenu has spoken out about the many challenges she faced during her unfortunate marriage.

The 70-year-old actress/Singer chatted with media personality Kikelomo Atanda-Owo on “Real Talk with Kike” about how she worked so hard to ensure her marriage didn’t fail until she realized she could die if she stayed in it.

She went on to say that she didn’t want her marriage to end, but that she couldn’t stand it any longer since it was about to kill her if she didn’t leave.

Onwenu said: “I went through it. It was difficult because I really didn’t want my marriage to end but I could not take it anymore. It would have killed me. I always say and that is the truth.

“And it was not good for the children to live in that kind of environment where the mother is depressed, the mother is carrying the weight of the whole family.

“I raised my children from kindergarten to Masters Degree.

The music icon said men will have to answer to God if they neglect their families.

“That’s mean, irresponsible, wicked, even to your own children? Forget about the wife, the children.

“And I decided to write about it because women, we keep quiet for too long. We take so much and you’re dying.

“And once I opened up, I felt this relief that a lot of women who read it would say, thank you for talking about this. ‘We know now that we ought to free ourselves.”

Though she said she doesn’t support divorce, Onwenu said if it must happen, it should be done peacefully.

The top 20 Classic and Contemporary Nigerian Love Songs

It’s the season of love, and whilst this year’s Christmas isn’t valentine like all the other Christmas, it doesn’t stop us from trying to enjoy it by showing love to each other and here are the top 20 Classic and memorable Contemporary Nigerian Love Songs.

And what’s a better way to express love than through song? But not just any old music, Nigerian love songs. E shock you abi.

Nigeria has a ridiculously vast catalogue of love songs; unfortunately, a lot of time it gets lost under catchy beats and funny lyrics and we miss the message, I mean

what’s more romantic than telling a Nigerian woman to ‘take all my money put am for your head o” (we’re going to conveniently forget the rest of the lyrics in that song, cos I don’t get it either)  but I maintain that Nigerian men are romantic, argue with yourself.

I have chosen twenty out of the best, this is by no means an exhaustive list, there are so many more that I’d have loved to add. Have a read/listen, google the lyrics and send them to your SO, if you’re still single, listen and have yourself a solo party.

Now I must give you a heads up; this list is incredibly biased, they’re all songs that I like, a lot of which I can sing word for word.

Top 20 Classic and Contemporary Nigerian Love Songs

Ololufe – Wande Coal 

Long before I ever interviewed him, this was my first introduction to Wande, Ololufe was from the now-defunct Mo’Hits (now Mavin) compilation album Curriculum Vitae released in 2007.

African Queen – 2face 

The ultimate Nigerian love song of its time, it’s a classic song, released in 2004.

It was widely acclaimed worldwide and was even used as a soundtrack in the movie Phat Girls’s arguably the first Nigerian hit of contemporary pop.

Baby mi da (Baby Jowo) – Victor Olaiya ft 2face 

Technically this isn’t the name of the song, the original highlife song ‘Mofe mu yan’ is a little more vulgar.

I lowkey prefer the remix with 2face released in 2014, the original was released somewhere between the ’60s and ’70s, filled with beautiful trumpet and piano interludes, this version is a mishmash of the oldies and with a fresh spin.

RMD also remixed baby Jowo in Tade Ogidan’s OGD All Starz Jamz.

Iyawo Mi – Timi Dakolo

Iyawo mi was released in 2014 and dedicated to his wife. My chest. If I were creating this list in order, I would definitely be in my top 5 and listen to the lyrics.

That’s it. That’s the message.

Never Far Away- Lagbaja 

Anyone who knows me, and knows me well knows that Lagbaja is MY guy, there’s no song of his that I don’t know, and I keep saying (God willing) he will play at my traditional wedding.

NFA was released in 2004, with the beautiful Ego’s voice, accompanied by an orchestra, violins, bata drums, percussion, a beautiful fusion of sounds that he’s christened AFRICANO.

Honestly, it’s beautiful to listen to; I’m calling this one a masterpiece,  Lagbaja is what I call a proper musician, wherever you are, come back, I miss you.

Oruka – Sunny Neji

Released in 2007, when there weren’t many Nigerian wedding love songs, Sunny Neji, having gotten married a few years before created this specifically to fill that gap.

Oruka quickly became a popular wedding song.

One Love – Onyeka Onwenu  

Now, this isn’t about romantic love, but I would be remiss if I didn’t add it to the list as it sends a message of love nonetheless.

Released in 1986, and still relevant in 2021.

‘One Love’ is a call for us to come together as one and love each other, sounds cheesy, but in light of the last year, I’d say it’s more than relevant.

Paul Play – Angel of My Life  

Originally released in the early 2000s. Likely 2006, this song has been featured in many love songs playlists.

He released a remix featuring Runtown in 2020.

Paul Play is the son of legendary juju musician the late Isaiah Kehinde Dairo.

Olo Mi – Tosin Martins 

This is one song that won’t be forgotten in a hurry, released in 2005 it was the love song that was played at almost every wedding, and is a part of many love stories it’s a fusion of R’n’B, hi-life and jazz with Yoruba lyrics.

It is still going strong over a decade later.

One Naira –  MI

One of MI’s most loved songs, released in 2010 as track no ten on his sophomore album MI 2: The Movie; features the talented Waje vocals on the chorus.

He praises his love interest in choosing love and one naira over money, and it makes for beautiful music.

Olufunmi – Styl Plus 

I struggled to decide between Olufunmi and Always on my mind. Still, if you pick 20 random Nigerians over the age of 18, I can almost guarantee they all know the lyrics to Olufunmi’s chorus.

Released in 2006 on the album Expressions, the song quickly became popular and is still their most successful song.

Honourable mention – Aso Ibora.

Ekuro – Davido 

Aye and Assurance heavily contested this spot – But I think Ekuro is the right song, released in 2012 off his debut studio album titled “Omo Baba Olowo”.

OG Davido fans will remember this.

Eji Ewuro – Sola Allyson 

‘Ife bi eji owuro’ means love like the morning dew, my whole chest ???? Originally released as a soundtrack for a Yoruba movie with the same title, it’s filled with mostly Sola’s words.

You can still hear the keys and talking drums; this one is a proper traditional love song. You may not understand the language, but I promise you it’s beautiful; I loved this song even before I knew what an expression of love felt like.

My Darlin – Tiwa Savage 

I would be remiss if I did not include Miss Savage on this list when the majority of her songs are deemed love songs.

My Darlin was released in 2014 along with beautiful visuals of a love story, starring Tiwa as a grandma telling her love story against the backdrop of war, and her granddaughters impending wedding.

Love Don’t Care – Simi

Released in 2016 ‘Love don’t care isn’t just any old love song it sorts of crosses over into the ‘woke’ territory.

She talks about a love that isn’t bound by ethnicity, religion or socio-economic status; the song garnered her mainstream attention.

Romeo and Juliet – Johnny Drille

Johnny Drille is in a league of his own, “Romeo & Juliet” is a simple song with crisp vocals over a simple acoustic guitar, a tambourine, and a drum.

The song has an alt-country vibe that is relatively new in the Nigerian music scene.

I wouldn’t compare him to any other Nigerian artist, having only just discovered him, I’ve quickly become a fan.

Banky W – Yes/No 

Released in 2012 just in time for Valentine’s day, Banky W then known as Mr Lover boy is another one with an impressive catalogue of mostly RnB Love songs (Made for you, All I want is you)

Yes/No won Most Gifted R&B Video at the 10th Annual Channel O Music Video Awards, it also peaked at number 1 on BBC Radio 1Xtra’s Afrobeat charts.

Obianuju – Duncan Mighty  

What’s more romantic than a man creating a whole song with your name as the title, released in 2010, quickly became a fan favourite and inspired many covers and spin-offs.

Future in Your Eyes – Tjan

“Future in your eyes” released in 2018 is a mid-tempo vibe produced by the legendary Cobhams Asuquo Beautiful lyrics.

And last but certainly not the least

Case – Teni

Simply because I’m currently into the type of love that comes with ENERGY, one that fights for me, released as a single in 2018

‘Case’ won the Headies award for Best Pop Single, propelled Teni further into the limelight, and grabbed major players’ attention within the African music industry.

During an exclusive interview with Chude Jideonwo on his show ‘WithChude,’ the actor and singer opened up about the rumoured affairs she was said to have with some prominent celebrities.

“There’s a long list of people you’re alleged to have slept with,” Chude asked.

Onyeka Onwenu responded: “Absolutely.”

Chude then goes on to name some of the people, saying: “Sony Okosun, Fela –”

“Sunny Ade,” Onwenu interjects. Chude continues: “Obasanjo…”

And Onyeka Onwenu added “Yes. They even said he married me. Ahn ahn, what is this? If he’s going to marry me, then we’ll make it public.”

She also recounted receiving a marriage proposal from the legendary Fela Kuti.

“Fela is a trickster. He knew I’d say no. I think it was his way of thanking me for coming out in support of him when he was jailed,” she said.

She went on to discuss her marriage and how she was abused emotionally.

“The marriage was incredible, it was incredibly beautiful, it was passionate, We were friends. We were the sort of friends who could stay in the house for a month without stepping out and we were preoccupied, reading (the) newspaper, doing whatever. He was a very good friend,”

“But sometimes when things happen to people they changed and sometimes, instead of taking it out on the people who have caused the problem, it’s expedient to take it out on the closest people to you, that happened.”

“Why did I take it for so long? Because I loved him and I loved my children and my children loved their father. So you make sacrifices because of the family.”

“But there comes a time when you have to say, I’ve done enough of the sacrificing and if you really care about the children, you save yourself, because it could have killed me, it could have killed me.”

“So, you save yourself. I was going down and then, my brother comes in. It took my brother calling me aside one day to say ‘you’re losing yourself.”

Highlife is a music genre that began in present-day Ghana in the 19th century, in the time of a colony of the British Empire, It uses the melody and rhythmic structures of cultural Akan music, but played with Western instrumentals.

Highlife gained recognition among the eastern people of Nigeria during the world war, as they combined and finetune it with their established music forming a contemporary musical genre known as Igbo highlife.

It’s actually not a crime to enjoy the music of the past, but what music will our generation be associated with?

Whenever I listen to Fela Kuti Anikulapo‘s songs or one of the old jams, I smile and ask myself, “Are any of this modern-day music going to have a lasting impact in society?” Almost all that Fela addressed in his “Beast of No Nation” is still happening today and whenever you listen to it, you’ll think they just release it a week ago because of its relevancy.

When compared to modern Music, old music is leagues ahead. It doesn’t matter what you enjoy listening to but the truth remains that music has gone downhill since 2010.

It’s easy to tell the kids of today how impactful the songs of Fela, Lucky Dube, Bob Marley, and even Alhaji Agba (Dr. Sikiru Ayinde Barrister) were to our society. But are today’s kids going to say the same to their kids with this our music?

Music these days are not lyrically good, it is just only about good beats, rather than having an enduring impact on the world at large.

Money has a negative impact on this and it’s what turns music to business rather than an art. Corporate titans largely influence studios and bands. Artists compromise integrity for a more lucrative payday even though it may take the band in a completely different direction.

Sure, some top artists these days make amazing music, like Falz the bahd guy, Brymo, Wizkid, Davido, Olamide, Burna Boy, among others, but will these modern-day musicians go down in history as legends?

Perhaps Wizkid will, but will you be proud to tell your kids you grew up listening to Wizkid? What happened to the immortal rock bands like Bongos Ikwue and the Groovies, Fela and his band.

Bands and artists of the past used to make statements of importance and incorporate influential and difficult topics into their music.

The masked Musician made the late ’90s and early 2000s a fun one with his catchy hooks and use of talking drums and other traditional instruments.

Konko Below is attributed with being the music that made twerking a normal part of dancing. It’s hard hearing the song and not wanting to bend down low as far as your waist can allow.

• Onyeka Onwenu – One Love

Actress, Singer, Journalist and Activist, Onyeka Onwenu is a singing nightingale whose voice was soothing and lovely to listen to. She was dubbed the Elegant Stallion.

Onyeka Onwenu released “One Love” in 1986, a song which to date is still a classic. “One Love” would have won a Grammys if Nigeria was allowed into the competition back then.

• Sunny Ade – Ja Funmi

King Sunny Ade is a Juju singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist who became the first Nigerian artist to be nominated for a Grammy Award.

King Sunny Ade released Ja Funmi in 1982. Ja Funmi means “Fight for Me”. The song is regarded as Sunny Ade’s best work and was released as part of his Major Label debut.

• Daddy Showkey – Somebody call my name

Daddy Showkey is a singer and a dancer who is credited for bringing the Popular “Galala” dance to light.

Daddy Showkey who still wears his dread put the city of Ajegunle, a place attributed to poor living standards and a Ghetto lifestyle on the forefront.

Somebody call my name is Daddy Showkey’s best call which is part of an album of the same name.

• Sunny Neji – Oruka

Sunny Neji was a singer, songwriter whose hit songs like “Happy Birthday”, “Tolotolo”, “Face me”, “Abosede”, “Mr Fantastic”

However, it was hit love ballad, “Oruka” that can be considered his best work ever. The song was a Nigerian Favourite. It was hard to go to weddings in the early 2000s and not hear the song being played.

• Tony Tetulia – My Car

Tony Tetuila was formerly a member of the popular music group, Remedies before leaving the group to establish a solo career.

Tony Tetuila’s best song is “My Car”, a song that was considered a diss song at former bandmate Eedris Abdulkareem.

• African China – No Condition is Permanent

African China is a Nigerian reggae artist who used pidgin to spice his music. His songs were popular in the early 2000s for their catchy tune, chorus, and relatable lyrics.

African China used his songs as a way to condemn corruption, societal ills, and vices. No Condition is Permanent is a song that talks about one’s standard of living and how everyone has their destined time to progress.

• Eedris Abdulkareem – Jaga jaga

Eedris Abdulkareem was a member of The Remedies. Eedris Abdulkareem is an activist who spoke out against corruption in Nigeria with his songs.

His most notable song is “Jaga Jaga”, a song that got then President of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo to ban it.

The song talked about the troubling state of Nigeria and how corruption had eaten deep into the system.

• Paul Play Dairo – Angel

Paul Play Dairo is the son of Late Musician, IK Dairo. Paul Play is a R ‘n’ B singer who broke into the music scene with a remixed version of his father’s hit song, “Mo so tire”.

However, it was his original song, “Angel of my Life” that cemented a spot in people’s hearts. In the song, he sings of a woman whom he sees as his angel. He released a remixed version of the song earlier this year and featured Runtown.

• Sammie Okposo – Welu Welu

Sammie Okposo is considered a legend in the Gospel Music Industry. He came into the music scene with his hit song, “Welu Welu”.

Welu Welu is a song of thanksgiving to God for Life, protection and blessings. It’s a danceable song that is quite easy to sing.
