Rolling Stone has unveiled its highly anticipated list of the Top 40 Afropop Songs of 2024, and Nigerian artists have made a significant mark. Leading the list is Tems with her hit track “Love Me Jeje,” followed by Rema’s “Ozeba” at number two.

Curator Mankaprr Conteh described “Love Me Jeje” as “sweet and sunny.” The track is a modern reimagining of Seyi Sodimu’s 1997 Nigerian hip-hop classic, with Tems infusing the song with her signature heartfelt lyrics and soaring vocals.

Rema’s electrifying “Ozeba,” celebrated for its trendy and dynamic beat, secured the second spot, cementing his reputation as one of Afropop’s standout stars.

Meanwhile, Ayra Starr also shined, with her track “Lagos Love Story” from the album ‘The Year I Turned 21′ clinching the number 8 position. The album showcases Ayra’s artistic evolution and has been widely praised for its depth.

Other Nigerian heavyweights dominated the chart, reflecting the global appeal of the Afropop genre.
– Asake, featuring Travis Scott, placed at number 11 with “Active.”
– Sarz’s “Happiness” (featuring Asake and Gunna) ranked at 14.
– Victony came in at number 15 with “Risk.”
– Kizz Daniel and Davido’s collaboration, “Twe Twe,” held strong at number 17.
– Asa’s “Odo” secured the number 22 spot.

Additional Nigerian entries include:
– Odunsi’s “Leather Park & Bnyx, RESURRECT” (24).
– Niniola with “Level” (25).
– Taves “Folake” (27).
– Tiwa Savage’s “Forgiveness” (28).
– BoyPee, Brown Joel, and Hyce’s “Ogechi” remix featuring Davido took the 31st spot.

The prestigious list, curated by Mankaprr Conteh, Nelson C.J., Achille Tenkiang, Kui Mwai, and Madzadza Miya, celebrates Afropop’s vibrant diversity, focusing on its global impact, regional representation, and unique musical styles.

This accomplishment underscores the **global rise of Afrobeats** and Nigerian music, with 13 Nigerian artists making the list—a testament to the genre’s influence and Nigeria’s dominance in the global music scene.

Captivating young audiences, Arbantone is quickly rising on local music charts.

Arbantone grew significantly in 2024, partially thanks to viral dance challenges on social media. The talented singer-songwriter made it known that he will be dropping his new project soon.

The three projects that Odunsi has so far released are “Time of Our Lives” (2016), “Rare” (2018), and “Everything You Heard Is True” (2020).

On Monday, September 12, 2022, the musician made the announcement on his Instagram page informing his fans and music lovers to expect the release of a new EP titled “Demin” on Wednesday, September 14, 2022.

From the beginning of 2021, Tems has been on the rise in the Global music scene since the release of Wizkid’s ‘Essence‘ which she lent her rare vocal range to in the summer of 2020.

In 2021 she has become one of Nigeria’s biggest Global stars, earning herself millions of streams, a feature on Drake’s “Certified Lover Boy” and fan love from International celebrities.

Just like most Nigerian artists, her career didn’t always start big. Other than some early fan affection from those who were drawn to her catchy tune, she remained virtually unknown for a long time.

Tems’ Journey into Music

Prior to becoming Tems was one of global R&B’s fastest-rising stars, she was Temilade Openiyi, an introverted child of a single mother in Lagos who enjoyed Destiny’s Child, Lil Wayne, Alicia Keys, and Aaliyah’s music.

A music teacher in secondary school guided her in discovering her voice. She’d sing and write songs at home with her brother on the guitar.

She’d always known she wanted to spend her life making music, and at the age of 15, she decided to quit listening to other people’s songs in order to develop her own style free of influences.

She became a hesitant college student in South Africa, studying economics at her mother’s insistence. Music took a backseat for the majority of her school years, and she only performed once in South Africa.

She got to open for Cassper Nyovest with a song called Highlights.

She also learned how to produce by watching YouTube videos. During one of her school vacations, she realized that producers would not help her unless she was willing to pay in cash or kind. So she gathered her wits and taught herself how to make her own music.

She went on to work as a digital marketer in Lagos before deciding to focus on music three years ago.

In 2018, she released “Mr Rebel,” a stripped-down sleeper hit that earned her a community of supporters known as the Rebel Gang.

However, Try Me which was released in August 2019, catapulted her into the spotlight and generated a buzz around her.

The Rise of Tems

Even in 2020, “Try Me” was still buzzing and in the first half of the year, it looked like she wasn’t going to drop anything again.

She however dropped “These Days” in May 2020 after a couple of collaborations with Show Dem Camp, Odunsi, Khalid and Blackmagic.

Then came her debut EP, For Broken Ears which received praises from the listening public and praises from critics. The EP was preceded by its lead single, ‘Damages.”

Unlike the mellow “Try Me“, “Damages” was a bit fast-paced but the themes of both songs were similar in a way.

“Damages” is a liberation song for young, exuberant women who quickly fall in love, the ladies who gave out their time and hearts to the wrong guy throughout their adolescent years and got played by the person they loved.

The song was a success, earning millions of streams in weeks of release.

Essence and its many triumphs

For every Artists there is that one song that not just reintroduces to your audience but takes your name to corners of the earth you never expected.

For Tems it was “Essence“, one of the songs from Wizkid’s 2020 “Made In Lagos” album.

When it was released alongside the project’s other songs in 2020, not many people actually vibed with the song. In fact, the trending songs from Wizkid’s MIL were “Ginger” which features Burna Boy, “Blessed” which features Damian Marley, ‘Smile” which features H.E.R.

In the first half of 2021, when it felt like the buzz around the album was dying down, “Essence” came to the rescue. US Celebrities were among the first set of people to start using the song on their short videos.

Then came in Tik-Tok where most songs have found popularity and it was no different for “Essence“, shooting it to a wider audience.

The part of the song mostly used on Tik-Tok was Tems‘ hook and this translated to not only fame for Wizkid but also for Tems.

Thanks to the song, Tems debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and several other Billboard charts, became the most streamed female artist in Nigeria on Spotify, earned her first BET nomination, among others.

As if that wasn’t enough, The song so enamoured Justin Bieber that he successfully campaigned to appear on its remix, propelling it to the Top 20 of Rolling Stone’s singles chart and garnering more than 80 million Spotify streams between the two versions.

It wasn’t too long the song was receiving certifications in various countries.

While riding on the high of “Essence“, Tems dropped her second EP, “If Orange is a Place.”

If Orange Was A Place illustrates the Nigerian artist’s artistic evolution while retaining much of the distinctive flavour of her prior release.

The production, helmed by Ghanaian producer Guilty Beatz, is also considerably more complete and urban.

Weeks Later, millions heard her melodious voice on “Fountains” a song off Drake’s “Certified Lover Boy” and from there it has been one success to another.

How the next year holds for the sultry singer will be dependent on the songs or project, if any she releases.

On “Bite Me,” Killertunes basks in the familiar feeling of triumph, pettily dismissing the unbelievers from his past and reveling in a heightened sense of confidence.

This conviction is what powers his newly released debut album, KillaXtra, a 13-set track where he takes the vocal lead all through.

With vivid influences from Wizkid, Afropop’s most indelible vocal performer in the last decade, Killertunes’ showing leans into bright melodies and hook-driven songwriting.

There is a new crop of cool cats that are dominating the Nigerian Music scene, these group of people fall under the umbrella of Alte Singers.

What is Alte or Alternative Music? Alternative music is classified as anything that is eclectic, original, or challenging than most popular music.

Or is music by non-conforming creatives who have taken charge of their content, right from lyrical composition to production and even directing their videos. Their freedom of expression is seen not only through music, but through fashion as well.

The term intends to give a platform for artists to break from the norm. It gives space for an artiste’s tendency to be innovative and reinvent genres. It has led to a small group of Nigerian artistes to define themselves as part of a movement called ‘Alté.

The genre since its rise in popularity has seen its fair share of criticism especially from people who prefer the usual ‘lamba‘ and its frontliners.  A lot of listeners don’t seem to understand them in terms of their eccentricity and vibe, what they offer is not regular so it makes them easy preys for criticism.

Although Alte has been around for a while, the use of the term ‘Alte’ can be traced back to 2010, when it was coined by DRB Lasgidi members Teezee and BOJ around the same time Black Magic started gaining prominence for his alternative music. It has also been credited to the members of the group, LOS. Alté was born out of a rebellion against mainstream music.

Sadly, alté artistes aren’t catering to a mass audience yet as many of them began their careers on SoundCloud, which allows performers to have full control of their music and its promotion.  But now they seem to be getting more recognition in the music industry.

DRB

The DRB LasGidi (previously known as “Rap Royals”) Nigerian musical group was formed in 2007 by BOJ, Teezee, and Fresh L.

Seen as the frontliners of Alte in Nigeria, they have released songs that have earned them

In 2012, they released the DJ Caise produced single, ‘Toyin”, which became an instant hit especially among the new wave of young listeners at the time of its release.

BOJ

BOJ is the stage name for Nigerian singer Bolaji Ojudokan, he is one of the founding of the group of Alte sound DRB. 

The singer released a mixtape #BOTM (Boj on the Microphone) in 2013 which showcased his raw talent.

Referred to as the Alte bank of Africa, he has worked with Davido, Reminisce, Show Dem Camp and Olamide, and Tiwa Savage.

The singer is popularly known for his smash hit “‘Awolowo” which features a trio of Ghanaian acts: Kwesi Arthur, Darkovibes, and Joey B. The song also received a Nigerian version that had Falz, Ycee, and Fresh L on it.

Fresh L

Fresh L whose real names is Ladi Ladenegan is a longstanding member of DRB.

The rapper is known for his stunning debut EP, SUNS, and has worked with notables like Davido, Dremo, and others.

Tems

Tems is a Nigerian alt-R&B singer, songwriter, and record producer.

In 2018 she released ‘Mr Rebel’ – a song of her own composition. Then she gained prominence with her smash hit “Try Me”.

In 2020 she was recruited by American singer Khalid to join him with fellow Nigerian Davido on an Afrobeats remix of “Know Your Worth“. That same year she released her debut EP, “For Broken Ears” which was preceded by the lead single, “Damages”.

She was also featured on Wizkid’s “Made In Lagos” on the “Essence” single.

Odunsi The Engine

Born Bowofoluwa Olufisayo Odunsi, the singer first came onto the scene with his 2016 EP ‘TIME OF OUR LIVES’.

If there’s one thing Odunsi -The Engine- has managed to do, it’s to stay true to himself and his art.

Influenced by EDM, R&B, Reggae, Soul and Afrobeats sounds, Odunsi pulls inspiration from these genres as well as various cultures to define his sound which he categorizes as Afro-Fusion.

His debut album ‘rare’ which dropped back in 2018 features other artists such as Davido, Runtown, Nasty C, Lady Donli, just to mention but a few.

Lady Donli

Lady Donli, is a promising alternative R&B, hip hop, alternative jazz and Afrobeat singer and songwriter.

In 2018, she released her debut album, ‘Enjoy Your Life’ which combines hip hop, jazz and other sounds as well.

Her inspiration comes not only from cultural experiences but also from music legends who dominated charts back in the ’80s and 90’s such as American duo Fugees and the late Brenda Fassie.

Donli has also worked with new-age music acts like Adekunle Gold, Nonso Amadi, Tomi Thomas, M.I Abaga, Mr Eazi, SDC, Davido, Ayuu, Odunsi the Engine, and Tay

Santi

Santi born Osayaba Ize-Iyama gained prominence with his ‘Diaries of a Loner journey’ during his days as an underground rapper which earned him even recognition from Wizkid.

Later he switched to an Alte Guy, got the name Santi and released an impressive music project in 2019 titled “Mandy & The Jungle“.

His self-directed music video for ‘Rapid Fire‘ which also featured Shane Eagle and Ghanaian singer Amaarae, has garnered million-plus views on YouTube. His music is a mashup of reggae and RnB and everything else in between.

Wavy The Creator

Born Jennifer Ejoke, Wavy the Creator is a jack of all trades: filmmaker, fashion designer, photographer, and a recording artist.

She made her start in the creative industry as a photographer, before returning to Lagos and releasing her explosive single H.I.G.H. in 2017.

H.I.G.H (Her In Greater Heights) has propelled her to the international scene where she has been able to share a stage with other artists such as Skepta and Jhus. She is currently signed to British rapper Tinie Tempah’s label, Disturbing London.

And again. ‘Fine boy’ music beat street music, as Rema takes home the “Next Rated” award many thought Zlatan Ibile would win. Hmmm, that’s hard. But if you think of it, Don Jazzy didn’t lose in 2015. In fact, he put up a good fight, justifying Reekado Banks’ win of the coveted Next Rated award. Olamide wanted Lil Kesh, then. But the street wasn’t enough then. It can’t be enough now.

Rema’s win is a surprise to many. But really, a voting category? People who voted know they voted Rema, and you don’t vote someone unless you want them to win. The idea here is, many people voted Rema but still weren’t expecting him to win. Because in all rights, Zlatan is bigger and even his Social Media presence is massive. Who would have thought the kid will give Ibile a run for his mummy?

For Zlatan Ibile, what this means is simple. He’s a big street guy, and he’s got vibes and he’s banging the streets. But except he’s trying to work a collabo with Burna or David, Headies isn’t for people like him. (He could have won “Street Hop” though.) The street game really isn’t enough to win awards, we’ve seen it time and time again. And like Naira Marley said, most of their fans aren’t online.

The next worthy contender could have easily been Victor AD. I mean, he’s got like the biggest breakout hit of them all (Wetin You Gain) and also collaborated with Davido (Tire You). He’s got a huge fan base, and every right to win. But he didn’t win. This is an implication of his follow-up efforts, after his first big hits. And although his “Red Eye” EP has received positive critical reviews, commercially, well he’s not made a big hit from it. So does it really affect him? Your guess is as good as mine.

LYTA is one-hit-wonder. Or he was. “Monalisa” has given him some more cred now, and he could low-key become a bang afro-fusion artist, like ’em Odunsi and Nonso Amadi. Is he ready to go that path though? Ready, sure. But is he willing? Because that may just be his last shot at going real mainstream.

And finally, Joeboy. New guy. Why he’s not in the Rookie category is simple. “Baby.” You don’t put someone who has one of the biggest hits of the year in Rookie. And his follow up “Beginning” has also been a bang. But he didn’t win Next Rated? So, he doesn’t have as many fans as Rema? Maybe. But, with what he’s got going, he’s got a chance at being an international bomb. Kenyans are already feeling him. Maybe Ghanaians will, too. And Canadians, and Koreans.
