There are artists and then, there are influencers of the culture; for Olamide, Naira Marley, Zlatan, the latter is the case.

The Nigerian-born street hop movement has gone a long way since it was born out of a mix of indigenous rap and Afropop six years ago.

With a number of artists gaining fame under its umbrella, there are few who have transcended just being artists into being gatekeepers of the culture.

Olamide

When a young Olamide stormed the industry in 2009 with “Eni Duro“, he got eyes listening as he dropped hard gritty bars and punchlines.

Over the last decade, no rapper has held the Nigerian street music scene in a chokehold like Olamide- the rapper is one of the most bankable rappers in Nigeria with his slew of anthems and more than 10 projects (both albums and EPs)

Olamide is the King of the streets as he has been able to dominate with hit anthems, popularize dance routines and slangs.

However, the rapper isn’t just respected for only his music, he has also become one of the go-to artists for any budding street artist to score hit music.

His large heart and easy access have made him a legend among upcoming street artists who struggles to gain attention all by themselves.

Prior to Zlatan’s fame as a result of his verse on Chinko Ekun’s “Able God,” he had teamed up with Olamide for his 2017 “My Body.”

This collaboration first introduced Zlatan to the mainstream before “Able God” solidified his stay.

Outside their collaboration, Olamide showed continuous support for the younger artist despite being pitted against him on every slightest occasion.

Naira Marley has also benefitted from associating with Olamide. The two collaborated on “Ko SI Werey” in 2016 and the following year regrouped on “Issa Goal” this time former YBNL protege, Lil Kesh contributed.

While Olamide has suffered constant comparison with Zlatan and Naira Marley by fans, he has still found a way to evolve, with his last two albums, “Carpe Diem” and “Uy Scuti” showing an artistic evolution.

YBNL

Olamide’s debut album, “Rapsodi” was released in 2011 under ID Cabasa’s Coded Tune Label but his second album, “YBNL” was released under his label of the same name in 2012.

The label to this date has not only been home to him and his catalogue but several others.

Olamide and his label, YBNL, have aided the careers of some of Nigeria’s most well-known musicians in recent years. While some have soured on him since then, the majority still hold him in high regard.

YBNL’s biggest products include Adekunle Gold, Fireboy DML, Lil Kesh, Chinko Ekun, Pheelz.

While the label has had its fair share of controversies surrounding its management style and handling of its artists, it would be dishonest to deny its impact on the Nigerian Music scene and most especially the street scene.

Lil Kesh is Olamide’s biggest product under the umbrella of the streets. Lil Kesh stormed the industry with “Shoki” creating not just a street anthem but a dance craze.

The song brought with it a culture shift in the Industry that makes Olamide’s infamous rant at the 2015 Headies about Lil Kesh’s loss to Reekado Banks for the “Next Rated” category valid.

In fact, Lil Kesh’s two years at YBNL was a pivotal moment in his career that unfortunately went on a decline after he left the label.

Another street product from YBNL is Chinko Ekun. While still a law student at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, the rapper with the incredibly hilarious Mandarin gimmick, signed to YBNL.

Although, compared to Lil Kesh, Chinko didn’t achieve much under the label, only finding fame after he left with his 2018’s hit song, “Able God”

However, the foundation of Chinko Ekun’s growth in the industry was laid in YBNL and the label gave a platform when nobody else did.

Marlian Music

Naira Marley broke into the spotlight as a rookie with the Olamide and Lil Kesh assisted “Issa Goal” in 2017.

After a short while of being in the background, Naira Marley found himself again in the spotlight after being embroiled in internet fraud cases.

While other artists would have drowned under these scandals, Naira Marley found order in the chaos, strengthening his career with hit songs like “Soapy,” “Am I a Yahoo Boy” “4 Nights In Ekohtiebo”, “Bad influence”, “Mafo”, “Tesumole” amongst others.

During the “Marlian Fest”, which was held at the Eko Hotels and Suites on 30 December 2019, Naira Marley announced the launch of his record label Marlian Records and revealed CBlvck, Zinoleesky, MohBad and Fabian Blu as signed acts.

In 2020, he added three more acts, Lyta, Emo Grae and Tori Keeche to the label.

Zinoleesky is Marlian Music leading star with hit songs like “Mapariwo”, “Kilofeshe”, “Naira Marley.”

Another star act in the label is the trailblazing Mohbad who has steadily climbed his way into the hearts of people with songs like “Komajensun”, “KPK”, “Ponmo”, ‘Feel Good”

Zanku Music

Zlatan launched Zanku records in 2020 and unveiled three artists; Papisnoop, Oberz & Jamopyper.

In terms of impact on the streets, the label is still a newbie unlike YBNL and Marlian Music, however, its star act, Jamopyper has found a level of fame with two hit songs “If No Be You” which features Mayorkun and “Better Better“.

Oberz on the other hand is still yet to have a mainstream hit but has found fame thanks to his features on Zlatan’s “Unripe Pawpaw“, “Suffer“, the remix of the 2021 hit, “Lagos Anthem.”

Papisnoop also does not have a mainstream hit yet but has been featured on hit songs like “The Matter“, “Unripe Pawpaw”, “Shomo.”

Sometimes some artists just can’t bear to be under the confines of a record label that misunderstands their sound, therefore their craving for independence leads them to establish their own record label.

YBNL- Olamide

Olamide started out as an artist under ID Cabasa‘s “Coded Tunes” under which he released his first album, “Raspodi”. After spending one year in Coded Tunes, he established his own label, YBNL (full meaning; Yahoo Boy No Laptop) in 2012.

YBNL has become a force to be reckoned with, in the Nigerian music scene and it has gone on to make some of the successful artists that exist in Nigeria today, from Adekunle Gold to Lil Kesh, Chinko Ekun and more.

Its current star act is Fireboy DML who is the new generation artist that is currently making raves home and abroad, standing on the support of his steady record label.

Olamide’s recent deal with the international record label, Empire Records gives YBNL an added advantage over their peers. With YBNL and Empire’s joint deal, every artist under the label will have their music distributed worldwide.

Davido Music Worldwide(DMW)- Davido

Davido started out in HKN which he and his brother – Adewale Adekunle – handled before he went independent.

In 2016, Davido left the label to join Sony Music but renegotiated his deal in 2017, after having a disagreement with the multinational company about his creative process.

What followed suit was the creation of his own label, DMW which is home to successful artists like Mayorkun, Peruzzi, Dremo, Yonda, Ichaba, Liya, May D and more.

Sony Music and DMW currently have a joint deal on the distribution of Davido’s music.

Starboy Entertainment- Wizkid

Wizkid started out as an artist under Banky W‘s Empire Mates Entertainment and after releasing two solo albums and one compilation album, left the record.

In 2013, he launched his own label, Starboy Entertainment and immediately signed Maleek Berry and Legendury Beatz, L.A.X followed suit a few months later.

He also signed a partnership deal with Ghanaian Artists like Efya, R2bees. Currently, Starboy Entertainment only has Terri as its artist.

Zanku Records- Zlatan

After gaining popularity in 2017 with the Olamide-assisted track “My Body”, Zlatan got signed to Alleluyah Boiz Entertainment (A.B.E) in 2018.

In 2020, he took to his Instagram page to announce the launch of his record label ‘Zanku Records’ without no artists unveiled at first. Then later, he unveiled Papisnoop, Oberz and Jamopyper as the label new signees.

The name “Zanku” is an acronym that translates loosely to, “Zlatan Please Don’t Kill Us,” it was the name of the dance routine he popularized and his first album.

emPawa/Banku Music- Mr Eazi

Mr Eazi is known for popularizing Banku Music, which a fusion of Ghana highlife with elements of Nigerian beats.

Penthauze Music- Phyno

South East born indigenous rapper, Azubuike Chibuzor Nelson, popularly known as Phyno, is one artiste who defiled the odds and broke into the Lagos market despite the language barrier.

He is the CEO of the label, Penthuaze. In 2011 the label had Runtown, Shugaboi and Flipside on its rooster. It signed Storm Rex in 2014, the singer becoming the label’s sole female act.

The label as a crew announced itself with the song ‘Camera Out’ (2011). Runtown, however, left the label in 2013. Phyno released his debut album ‘No Guts No Glory’ under the label.

After signing ‘Nuno’, ‘Rhatti’ and ‘Cheque’ PentHauze dropped 2019 singles “the Bag” and “Agu”.

In 2020, his act, Cheque started gaining prominence with his song, “Zoom”

Jonzing Records- D’Prince

D’Prince started out under his elder brother, Don Jazzy’s label, Mo’hit Records. After the dissolution of Mo’hits, he joined Mavin Record which was also founded by Don Jazzy.

When he discovered Rema in 2018, he signed him to his label, Jonzing Records which is a subsidiary imprint of Mavin Records Global.

Thanks to Rema’s popularity in the International Music scene, Jonzing Record has also seen a rise in popularity.

In January of 2021, it announced another artist to the imprint, Ruger.

HALL OF FAME;

Mavin records- Don Jazzy

Over the years, Don Jazzy has established himself as one of the Industry’s iconic music personalities. The Record Producer/Label Boss has founded and led two of Nigeria’s successful labels, Mo’Hits and Mavins Record.

18-Year-Old P.Priime is on his way to becoming the next big thing in the Music Industry with his exceptional Music Production skills.

P.Priime has produced music for the likes of Olamide, Teni, DJ Cuppy, Fireboy DML and is expected to produce for many more.

The youngster is yet to be very popular but when you are trained by the Exceptional Music Producer, Sarz, it’s only a matter of time till you achieve greatness.

Olamide had its to say about him in an interview;

“His sound is larger than life, bigger than the name”.

Fireboy DML- Like I do

Fireboy DML is a talented singer and amazing songwriter. His debut album, “Laughter, Tears, and Goosebumps” was a massive success. “Like I Do” which was of the album was produced by P.Priime.

The beat is simple and soothing at the same time then alongside with Fireboy’s vocals, the song became a fan’s favorite.

DJ Cuppy, Fireboy Dml- Feel Good

DJ Cuppy has been trying to fully break into the music scene despite her popularity. Her debut album, “Original Copy” was the deciding factor.

The album was released to positive reviews as it showcased Cuppy’s growth. P.Priime produced “Feel Good” which featured Fireboy DML.

While Cuppy didn’t contribute much and Fireboy took over the song, the beat itself is a bop. This song is a banger.

Zlatan, Papisnoop, Jamopyper – Unripe Pawpaw

Zlatan is one of the pioneers of the Zanku Style Genre that took over the streets in 2018. In earlier 2020, he and Prime collaborated on another Zanku style song, “Unripe Unpawpaw”.

Though the beat was built on already existing Zanku style, Prime manages to make it unique in its own way.

Zlatan, Obesere – Egungun be careful

Around March of 2020, Fuji Veteran, Obesere became the topic of Twitter after some persons decided to revisit his classics.

“Egungun Be Careful” was the favorite of them all and Zlatan decided to cash into the publicity and drop a remake in Zanku way.

Unlike the original beat, Prime made a fast-paced beat with traditional percussions playing in the background.

Zlatan ft Papisnoop, Jamopyper, Oberz- Shomo

Off Zlatan’s last EP, “Road to CDK” is “Shomo” which features Jamopyper, Oberz and Papisnoop all members of the Zanku Records.

Olamide ft Bad Boy Timz- Loading

Olamide enlist Priime to majorly produce his recent album, “Carpe Diem” and the youngster delivered.

On “Loading” which features Bad Boy Timz, Priime gives listeners something to dance to, making the album have a street banger of which Olamide is known for. The beat also have the Zanku style feel.

Olamide – Eru

On “Eru”, Priime creates a platform for Olamide to showcase his calmer and Loverboy side. One beautiful thing about the beat is the Strings playing in the background.

Olamide – Greenlight

On “Greenlight”, P.Priime advances on what he did in “Eru” but in a better way. The beat is danceable but still soothing at the same time. Olamide certainly enjoyed himself on this one.

While Zlatan has dished out street anthems that have dominated the airwaves, he also can be motivational.

The Rapper/Label boss is an inspirational story in his own right. From winning the Airtel-sponsored One Mic talent show held in Abeokuta in 2014 to launching his record label, Zanku Records in 2020, what’s there not be motivated from?

His breakthrough came in form of Chinko Ekun’s 2018 hit song, “Able God” which then went on to popularized “Zanku Dance”.

While the musician has had his own fair share of troubles, which was EFCC arresting him and Naira Marley in 2019 for an alleged case of internet fraud and money laundering of which he was later released.

Shomo ft Oberz, Jamo Pyper, Papisnoop

Just like “Quilox”, “Shomo” has the appearance of a normal street banger. But it’s more than that. The key focus is in Zlatan’s rap which comes up in the first verse.

Papisnoop comes into the second verse with his own motivational story. The song is both a banger and a motivational song at once.

Life

In “Life”, Zlatan shares his backstory, his struggles, and the obstacles he had to overcome before he could get to where he is now.

Most people can relate to this as not everyone came from a backstory where things were kind of smooth.

He also doesn’t hesitate to throw shades at people who looked down on him and mocked him when he was still struggling.

Quilox

Inspired by the popular Lagos Nightclub owned by Shina Peller, “Quilox” is on the surface a street song but if you listen carefully to the lyrics, Zlatan is passing a message.

Suffer ft Oberz

Suffer is an inspirational song that features Zanku’s artist, Oberz. Zlatan had first dropped a snippet of the song and it got trending on social media.

After being pressured by fans, he finally dropped it in March. He tells his hustle story in the song adding that one of the main reasons for his continuous hustle.
