Nigerian Afrobeat, and Afrofusion superstar Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, known professionally as Wizkid, has hit a new milestone on YouTube with his hit tune “Joro.”

Since his entrance into the industry, Wizkid has made some historical achievements in his music career that have put the nation on the map in international music scene map.

On Monday, 30th September 2019, the highly rated Nigerian Afrobeats star, Wizkid blessed the airwaves with a Northboi-produced masterpiece captioned, “Joro” alongside its official music video.

The music video for “Joro,” which Adriaan Louw directed, was shot in Lagos and London. The concept of the video is that Big Wiz uses his music to create a spiritual connection with people.

The vibrant and attractive music video, which was released in 2019, has now surpassed 200 million views on the social media and online video sharing platform, YouTube.

With this, Wizkid has now joined artists like Burna Boy and Davido, who each have two music videos that have received more than 200 million views. Burna Boy has “On The Low” while Davido has “Fall“.

Nigerian Afrobeat superstar Wizkid has reunited with his long-disappeared producer, Northboi, in a new video that shows the duo working on new music in the studio.

The video was shared via Instagram on Wednesday, the 19th of January 2022.

In the video, the duo was working together on new music in the studio.

Recall, Northboi took to Twitter in September 2019 to chastise Wizkid for giving credit to Killertunes for Joro.

He also made it public that Wizkid had threatened him with a pistol when he requested a contract for his beats.

In this interview, The producer disclose that Joro was not the reason he was angry because even though Starboy gave another producer the credit for the song he produced.

He states that the reason he fell out with Starboy was because of the beats he made for Wizkid’s track with Damian Marley and Big Wiz reluctance to sign a contract for that.

In the video spotted by Mp3bullet.ng Wizkid and Northboi have put their differences aside and are now working together in the studio to bring their fans new music.

The beautiful, joy-filled music video for “Amnesia” was made by an all-black creative crew, a press statement mention.

It features direction and choreography from Tajana B-Williams and styling from Mazhané Rima- Fleurima and Zarah Elizabeth.

Off his fresh new extended play project Spilled Milk 1, French rapper Bas comes through with an Ari Lennox & Kiddominant-assisted track tagged “Amnesia“.

Kanye, JayZ – Lift Off

“Lift Off” is a song by Jay-Z and Kanye West featuring American recording artist Beyoncé.

It was written by Kanye West, Jay-Z, Jeff Bhasker, Mike Dean, Bruno Mars, and Seal, while production was handled by West, Bhasker, Mike Dean, Pharrell, Q-Tip, and Don Jazzy for Jay-Z‘s and West‘s collaboration album, Watch the Throne (2011).

The song was rumored to be released as the lead single from the album containing additional vocals by Bruno Mars.

The music video for Starboy Entertainment’s Soco, which features Wizkid, Ceeza Milli, Spotless, and Terri, the label’s former artist, has garnered over a hundred million views on YouTube.

“Soco” becomes the third song from Wizkid to hit 100 Million views on Youtube. The other songs to have don this include “Come Closer” and “Joro.”

It is the most-streamed Nigerian record Label song on Youtube.

It also becomes the first song by a Nigerian record label to amass over 100 million views on the video-sharing platform.

UK Official Chart company recently launched the first-ever UK Afrobeat singles chart. According to the announcement, the new Top 20 weekly spotlight artists making strides in the Afrobeats scene in the past 12 months in the UK.

On the list, seven Nigerian artists represented Nigeria showing how much spread the Nigerian Music industry is having on other countries.

So here are the Nigerian songs dominating the UK from these seven artists.

Naira Marley – Soapy

If “Issa Goal” was Naira Marley’s breakout song, “Soapy” was his rebirth, Released just days after his release from jail in 2019, Soapy was a massive hit and got over 3 million views on Youtube in three weeks.

Though the song came with its fair share of controversies as people saw the song as promoting masturbation with its lyrics. The song came with it own original dance that trended even beyond the borders of Nigeria.

Tekno – Skeletun

Released in 2019 and produced by Phantom, Tekno dominated the year with a club-worthy song, The song usurped every other danceable song Tekno had ever produced which is why it isn’t a surprise to see it be his best acceptable song in the UK.

In 2019, Don Jazzy had announced that Jonzing Records/Mavin Records was launching a new artist in the person of Rema who dropped Dumebi as his debut song.

Mr Eazi ft Burna Boy – Miss you bad

Mr Eazi released “Miss you bad” in 2018 off his “Lagos to London” EP and he featured Burna Boy.

This song is a surprise addition as it didn’t perform too well in terms of radio airplay across Nigeria and in fact, is one of the most unpopular songs of the EP judging by the might of the collaboration.

People living in the UK might have a different thought to the song as it placed 13th on the UK Afrobeat Chart.

Wizkid – Joro

Released in 2019 and produced by Northboi, Joro is a song that in terms of lyrics doesn’t boast of much but heavily depends on its smooth Afrobeat beat.

The song which was criticized for its lack of abundant lyrics and heavy use of adlibs and repetition was a massive hit.

Wizkid in an interview explained that the word “Joro” meant enjoyment which explains why he chose not to spit too many lyrics.

Davido ft Chris Brown – Blow your mind

“Blow your mind” isn’t Davido’s first international collaboration but this song outclassed his previous collaborations. Featuring American singer, Chris Brown on the song, Davido brought his A-game and he didn’t disappoint.

“Blow Your  Mind” was a single off Davido’s 2019 “A Good Time” album. The music video broke Youtube’s record for the highest viewed Nigerian song in a day.

Burna Boy – Ye

Burna Boy gained global prominence after releasing the Phantom produced hit song, “Ye” off his “Outside” album.

The song gained more fame after Kanye West announced he was releasing his album also called “Ye” leading to a massive increase in streaming numbers on Burna Boy’s side.

Wizkid versus Davido, an incessant campaign, which was developed by fans, who were not mutual lovers both artists.

Many years have passed since they joined the music industry, yet, this comparison ceases to end, and at a time, almost caused a real conflict between the two.

The most appalling part of everything is the comparison of not just the artists, but their music.

We tend to do these things, bringing down the hard work and artistry of a musician who is not our favorite, just to lift up the ones we like

From the onset of their music Careers of Wizkid and Davido, they always seem to drop hits during the same period, and these songs usually become objects of juxtaposition.

This year, the trend, however, continued, when both dropped two smashing hit singles; “Joro”, and “Risky”.

Nonetheless, I’d like to proceed by giving you a brief analysis of both songs;

Wizkid- “Joro”.

On the 18th of September 2019, Wizkid dropped his much anticipated single titled “Joro” off his fourth studio album; “Made In Lagos”.

Although the NorthBoi produced song faced severe criticism at the stages of its release, it took us by surprise and did excellently well, topping several charts across the country with millions of streams across several digital platforms.

This Track sees the Nigerian music superstar delivering his signature vocals over a head-nodding mid-tempo beat.

“Joro” is a song with a full blend of Afro-beat sound laced with love-themed lyrics.

During an interview with Capital Xtra in London, Wizkid revealed that the song was a message to someone he loves, telling her that if they are together, they would enjoy themselves.

“Joro” is no doubt, one of the best jams 2019 presented to us, with a soothing melody that makes you want to just relax and vibe to it.

Davido- Risky

“Risky”, a mega-hit from Davido was released on the 23rd of October 2019, a few weeks after Wizkid’s “Joro”

Consequently, the Speroach produced song features the vocals of Jamaican patois singer; Popcaan, and is off his “A good time “ album.

You can all recall that the song was a result of freestyle on the radio during is USA media tour, which unfortunately didn’t turn out well.

Davido, however, went from being referred to as “talentless” to a “hitmaker”, as he turned a disastrous freestyle into a jam.

The hype surrounding the release of the song was surely worth it as “Risky” ranks among the best songs of the year, which we can’t resist dancing to.

Why “Risky” and “Joro” shouldn’t be compared.

As you have read earlier, both songs are unique in their own way, and we can’t deny that we don’t jam to each of these songs.

A song is a product, and clear evidence of an artist’s artistry, thus it shouldn’t be a tool for comparison.

“Risky” Is great and so is “Joro”. If you love “Risky” more, good, enjoy your “Risky” and let “Joro” be. On the other hand, if you’re a “Joro” lover, do the same!.

If you love both, that’s wonderful!.

On a serious note, “Risky” and “Joro” debate has to stop!!!

A whole chunk of the year 2019 is gone. And as we step into the eighth month of the year, the heart of summer, it’s not without love from out guys in the music industry. Yeah, we look forward to more party music, like never before.

September is still young, anyway and most of the songs trending now are probably songs released in the course of last month. That’s not to say the guys ain’t already dropping new music, though. But of all those long lists of songs released in August, which are Top 10 Naija Songs (Nigerian Songs)? The ones still trending? You can say, the best.

Guess we’ll just find out!

• Wizkid – Joro

Wizkid is now ready for 2019, we believe. And his “Made in Lagos” should be here anytime from now. “Joro” which we’ve waited on for quite a while, is here though. The NorthBoi production is all shades of the new Wizkid sound. It’s relevant, to say the least.

And even though it was just a day, it managed to rock September and is still trending!

• Wizkid – Ghetto Love

First off, “Ghetto Love” isn’t a street song (he did say a few “gbese” on the track, though.) It’s just love the way Wizkid does it. Afro loving, with all the good and positive vibes, flowing around. And he didn’t just jump on any shit, he had Kel P and Killertunes work on the jam. The sound, at the very least, is contagious. And very positive, and powerful.

• Tiwa Savage – 49-99

“49-99” marks the beginning of that great future we talk about when we say international deals. In the past, our artists in Nigeria haven’t really been able to hold on to their deals with foreign labels, maybe because the deals are half-baked or are missing something. Tiwa Savage, though, is likely to be our first break out on that front. The Nigerian Dream, as we know it.

The music, which is her own way of doing the Fela thing (nothing she’s not tried before, though) samples from one of the Legend’s catalogue, from ’78. Not just the “forty-nine sitting ninety-nine standing” reference, but also the music. From the saxophone, to the specific percussions and the female backups (c’mon!!), everything reeks Fela Kuti. And the tempo was managed, keeping it Afro, even despite its consistent kicks and beats. Fire!

• Naira Marley – Puta

Naira Marley is a beast and he knows how to make the streets go gaga. That’s exactly what he did with this “Soapy” follow-up. “Puta” (or Pxta) is a mad street jam, and the reception was massive, since he’s got everyone hyped up before.

“Puta” is still one of September’s hottest!

• Zlatan x IVD – Bolanle

“Bolanle” is the same tempo as “This Year” but this is the first time I’ve heard a storyline on a Zlatan song, in a while. It’s capturing, somehow. And then the hook, the pause of the beat, and the systematic “bolanle pepper dem” makes the song catchy. Catchy enough that you would start singing it, unconsciously.

Street aside, this is real music that you can feel in your veins. It’s just like when Small Doctor’s “Penalty” was street, but then was more than just street.

• DMW – On God ft. Davido, Mayorkun, Dremo

It’s not a DMW year, but doesn’t mean they’re not doing their best to stay on top of their game. “On God” is a big one and it has the three main guys from the Davido imprint, just having fun on some big afropop beat. Issa vibe.

• M.I Abaga x Blaqbonez x A-Q, Loose Kaynon – The Purification (Martell Cypher)

Martell Cypher II, is like the second coming of Bad Meets Evil, they all got a lot to say. Blaq is fresh off his beef with guys who don’t think he’s good enough to be best in Africa. A-Q is keeping a low profile, but does he have bars? Hell yeah! M.I got ’em covered, digging up some really deep shit. He actually numbered the rappers in SA, Ghana and Kenya.

• Rudeboy – Audio Money

“Audio Money” which has an infectious afro-beat, with all those percussion roll-in’s Rudeboy loves, isn’t just a song that’s trending because it’s from someone we actually like. It’s got the vibe, and also a message. And it couldn’t have come at a better time. This time that Shatta Bandle is giving so many niggas inferiority complex and driving them to opt in for ‘fake lavi da loca’. The message is loud and clear.

• Naira Marley x Young John – Mafo

Young John has been low-key, for far too long. The last time we heard from him was “Ello Baby” when he feautured Kizz Daniel and Tiwa Savage. Truth is, Young John is one of those producers that if a big artist doesn’t have a song with, we ask why. We even ask how that artist became ‘big’. And his work on high tempo beats is like Thor swinging his hammer. Now add all that to the raving Naira Marley energy, “Mafo” is what you get.

• Adekunle Gold – Young Love

Adekunle Gold is married, and y’all know what married artists do. Retire or just go silent, for a while and then storm back one day again, dropping a song. Expecting us to catch the vibe.

We can say, Adekunle, however has still been pretty much active since his marital status has changed, and his personal life isn’t even interfering with the career. “Young Love” is a groovy thing, not the usual Adekunle Gold, but the one we’ve been getting for a while now. So, it’s OK.

Worthy Mentions

Then, we had the reply to the M.I Abaga-led Cypher, led by Vector, “The Purge” Payper and Vader also came in with the Viper. And, Sound Sultan dropped “Odo”, a real vibe featuring an unlikely cast of Teni, Mr Real and Olu Maintain.

“Ride For You”, Phyno’s big collaboration with Davido, off his album is a mad one. Falz the Bahd guy also came through with “Loving”, as Reminisce kind of replies M.I with “OGB4IG.”

September worked out, after all.

Two months after signing 10-year-old Ahmed, Wizkid has made another big move to sign another talented artiste called Terri to StarBoy Entertainment.

Wizkid who made the announcement on Twitter welcomed Terri into the Starboy entertainment family, revealing that he had come across Terri on Instagram when the talented singer tagged him to a cover of the song he did with DJ Jimmy Jatt ‘Oshe‘ in December and voila! the artiste got signed for his great talent… Just laidat!

We would notice that there is a trend with how Wizkid is recruiting his new Starboy gang, signing not just the talented, as we have so many talented artistes in the country, but also the bold ones who are coming forward with their crafts to showcase to him. We would also note that these crafts mostly show how much the artistes respect Wizkid as the Starboy that he is.

It is also great to note that one thing Starboy is evidently promising these talents he is surrounding himself with is that he’s here for them with the words “Daddy Yo got you” and it can also be seen as Wizkid repeating history by taking chances on these artistes the same way he was given a chance to shine by his former management, Empire Mates Entertainment (EME).

While we say congrats to Terri, we can’t help but wonder who would be the next lucky artiste to get signed into the Starboy gang.
